Abstract:The symmetry properties, order parameters, and magnetoelectric phase diagrams of multiferroics are discussed. After brief reviews of Ni$_3$V$_2$O$_8$, TbMnO$_3$, and RbFe(MoO$_4$)$_2$, we present a detailed analysis of RMn$_2$O$_5$ (with R=Y, Ho, Dy, Er, Tb, Tm).

Abstract:The magnetic phase diagrams of RMnO3 (R = Er, Yb, Tm, Ho) are investigated up to 14 Tesla via magnetic and dielectric measurements. The stability range of the AFM order below the Neel temperature of the studied RMnO3 extends to far higher magnetic fields than previously assumed. Magnetic irreversibility indicating the presence of a spontaneous magnetic moment is found near 50 K for R=Er, Yb, and Tm. At very low temperatures and low magnetic fields the phase boundary defined by the ordering of the rare earth moments is resolved. The sizable dielectric anomalies observed along all phase boundaries are evidence for strong spin-lattice coupling in the hexagonal RMnO3. In HoMnO3 the strong magnetoelastic distortions are investigated in more detail via magnetostriction experiments up to 14 Tesla. The results are discussed based on existing data on magnetic symmetries and the interactions between the Mn-spins, the rare earth moments, and the lattice.

Abstract:The complete irreducible co-representations of the paramagnetic space group provide a simple and direct path to explore the symmetry restrictions of magnetically driven ferroelectricity. The method consists of a straightforward generalization of the method commonly used in the case of displacive modulated systems and allows us to determine, in a simple manner, the full magnetic symmetry of a given phase originated from a given magnetic order parameter. The potential ferroic and magneto-electric properties of that phase can then be established and the exact Landau free energy expansions can be derived from general symmetry considerations. In this work, this method is applied to the case of the orthorhombic rare-earth manganites RMnO3. This example will allow us to stress some specific points, such as the differences between commensurate or incommensurate magnetic phases regarding the ferroic and magnetoelectric properties, the possible stabilization of ferroelectricity by a single irreducible order parameter or the possible onset of a polarization oriented parallel to the magnetic modulation. The specific example of TbMnO3 will be considered in more detail, in order to characterize the role played by the magneto-electric effect in the mechanism for the polarization rotation induced by an external magnetic field.

Abstract:The influence of rotomagnetic (RM), rotoelectric (RE) and magnetoelectric (ME) coupling on phase diagram and properties of antiferrodistortive (AFD) perovskite oxides was reviewed. The main examples we consider in the review are typical AFD perovkites, such as incipient ferroelectrics EuTiO3, SrTiO3, EuxSr1-xTiO3, multiferroic BiFeO3 and Bi1-xRxFeO3 (x = La, Nd). The strong influence of RM, RE and ME couplings on the physical properties and phase diagrams including antiferromagnetic (AFM), ferroelectric (FE) and structural AFD phases has been revealed in the framework of Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire (LGD) theory, as well as the prediction of novel (double and triple) multiferroic phases has been demonstrated. In the review we are especially focused on (a) the possibility to induce FM (FE) phase in EuTiO3 (as well as in other paraelectric AFM oxides) by the application of an electric (magnetic) field due to the ME coupling; (b) the analysis of the size effects and novel phases in EuxSr1-xTiO3 nanosystems, where the LGD predicts the presence of the triple AFD-FE-FM(AFM) phase at low temperatures; (c) the appearance of improper spontaneous polarization and pyroelectricity in the vicinity of antiphase domain boundaries, structural twin walls, surfaces and interphases in the AFD phase of non-ferroelectric SrTiO3 induced by the flexoelectricity and rotostriction; (d) the occurrence of low symmetry monoclinic phase with in-plane FE polarization in thin strained EuxSr1-xTiO3 films and its stabilization over wide temperature range by AFD oxygen octahedron tilts due to flexoelectric and rotostriction coupling; (e) discussion of a surprisingly strong size-induced increase of AFM transition temperature caused by the joint action of RM coupling with elastic stress accumulated in the intergrain spaces of BiFeO3 dense ceramics.

Abstract:Discovery of novel phases and their associated transitions in low-dimensional nanoscale systems is of central interest as the origin of emergent phenomena and new device paradigms. Although typical ferroelectrics such as PbTiO3 exhibit diverse phase transition sequences, the conventional incompatible mechanisms of ferroelectricity and magnetism keep them as simply nonmagnetic phases, despite the immense practical prospective of multiferroics in novel functional devices. Here, we demonstrate using density function theory that PbTiO3 nanodots exhibit unconventional multiferroic phase transitions. The nanosize and nonstoichiometric effects intrinsic to nanodots bring about the coexistence of ferromagnetism with the host electric polarization, mediated by the termination and surface morphology. We also predict the key features of the size-dependent phase diagram of nanodots that involve a rich sequence of ferroelectric-multiferroic-ferromagnetic/nonmagnetic (FE-MF-FM/NM) multiferroic phase transitions. The present work thus provides an avenue to realizing multiferroics and multifunctional oxides in low-dimensional systems.

Abstract:Ferroic systems under considerable geometrical restrictions at nanoscale have successfully introduced novel phases such as multiferroic and topological phases. However, ferroic orders completely disappear below the critical size limit of several nanometers and the geometry cannot be relied upon to produce a variety of phases. Here, via first-principles calculations, we demonstrate that a rich variety of phases and their transitions can be realized by dislocations in paraelectric SrTiO3. We show that atomic-scale ferroelectricity and (anti)ferromagnetism are induced by the strain concentration and nonstoichiometry intrinsic to dislocations in SrTiO3, resulting in ferroelectric-(anti)ferromagnetic-multiferroic phase transitions depending on the core structure. Furthermore, we also show that electrical polarization configurations strongly depend on the strain distribution around a dislocation and topological phases can be realized without geometrical restrictions. The present result suggests that the utilization of defects in a material is a powerful strategy to design ferroic orders below the critical size, thereby expanding the application of ferroic nanostructures to the atomic scale.
Designing Orbital and Charge Ordering Multiferroics by Superlattice Strategy and Strain Engineering

Abstract:Orbital ordering (OO) or charge ordering (CO) in e1g compounds like RMnO3 (R = rare-earth element), RNiO3, and CaFeO3 makes them attractive functional materials. Despite belonging to the e1g family, SrFeO3 is metallic and free from OO and CO, which may limit its technological potential. Here, through first-principles calculations, we propose a rational design of OO and CO insulating SrFeO3 by superlattice strategy and strain engineering. With a systematical investigation of the interplay among Jahn-Teller distortion related to OO, breathing distortion associated with CO, strain, octahedral rotations, and cation ordering, we reveal that cation ordering in SrFeO3/ABO3 superlattices not only is capable to stabilize Jahn-Teller and breathing distortions, but is also indispensable in triggering metal-insulator transition by the collaboration with Jahn-Teller or breathing distortion, leading to ferromagnetic insulating SrFeO3. Owing to the different sensitivity of Jahn-Teller and breathing distortions to strain, purposeful design of OO or CO phase and even as multiferroics coexisting ferro-electric and ferromagnetic orders can be realized by tuning the relative stability of CO and OO phases by strain engineering. The coupled charge, orbital, spin, and ferroelectricity degrees of freedom make SrFeO3/ABO3 superlattices appealing for desired applications.
An Effective Model of Magnetoelectricity in Multiferroics $RMn_2O_5$

Abstract:An effective model is developed to explain the phase diagram and the mechanism of magnetoelectric coupling in multiferroics, $RMn_2O_5$. We show that the nature of magnetoelectric coupling in $RMn_2O_5$ is a coupling between two Ising-type orders, namely, the ferroelectric order in the b axis, and the coupled magnetic order between two frustrated antiferromagnetic chains. The frustrated magnetic structure drives the system to a commensurate-incommensurate phase transition, which can be understood as a competition between a collinear or col-plane order stemming from the `order by disorder' mechanism and a chiral symmetry order. The low energy excitation is calculated and the effect of the external magnetic field is analyzed. Distinct features in the electromagnon spectrums in the incommensurate phase are predicted.

Abstract:Multiferroic rare earth manganites attracted recent attention because of the coexistence of different types of magnetic and ferroelectric orders resulting in complex phase diagrams and a wealth of physical phenomena. The coupling and mutual interference of the different orders and the large magnetoelectric effect observed in several compounds are of fundamental interest and bear the potential for future applications in which the dielectric (magnetic) properties can be modified by the onset of a magnetic (dielectric) transition or the application of a magnetic (electric) field. The physical mechanisms of the magnetoelectric effect and the origin of ferroelectric order at magnetic transitions have yet to be explored. We discuss multiferroic phenomena in the hexagonal HoMnO3 and show that the strong magneto-dielectric coupling is intimately related to the lattice strain induced by unusually large spin-phonon correlations.

Abstract:The magnetoelastic coupling in multiferroic $DyMn_2O_5$ is investigated by magnetostriction measurements along the three crystallographic orientations. Strong lattice anomalies as a function of the magnetic field are detected at the low temperature magnetic and ferroelectric phase transitions. The sign and magnitude of the magnetostrictive coefficient as well as the lattice anomalies at the transitions are correlated with the Dy moment order and with the sharp changes of the dielectric constant and the ferroelectric polarization. With the magnetic field applied along the c-axis a new high-field phase has been detected the magnetic structure of which has yet to be explored.

Abstract:The multiferroic behaviors of polycrystalline Gd1-xTmxMnO3 are investigated by measuring the structural, magnetic, dielectric, and ferroelectric properties. Remarkable polarization is observed by partial Tm-substitution of Gd ions, and can be proposed to arise from the contribution of both the symmetric exchange striction (SS term) and asymmetric exchange striction (S x S term) in the ab-plane cycloidal structure at low substitution level. With further substitution, the polarization is gradually reduced, and it is suggested that the ferroelectric phase evolves from the ab-plane cycloidal structure to the bc-plane cycloidal structure where only the antisymmetric exchange striction (S x S term) contributes to the polarization. Abstract:The complex interplay between the 3d and 4f moments in hexagonal ErMnO3 is investigated by magnetization, optical second harmonic generation, and neutron-diffraction measurements. We revise the phase diagram and provide a microscopic model for the emergent spin structures with a special focus on the intermediary phase transitions. Our measurements reveal that the 3d exchange between Mn^{3+} ions dominates the magnetic symmetry at 10 K < T < T_N with Mn^3+ order according to the Gamma_4 representation triggering 4f ordering according to the same representation on the Er^{3+}(4b) site. Below 10 K the magnetic order is governed by 4f exchange interactions of Er^{3+} ions on the 2a site. The magnetic Er^{3+}(2a) order according to the representation Gamma_2 induces a magnetic reorientation (Gamma_4 --> Gamma_2) at the Er^{3+}(4b) and the Mn^{3+} sites. Our findings highlight the fundamentally different roles the Mn^{3+}, R^{3+}(2a), and R^{3+}(4b) magnetism play in establishing the magnetic phase diagram of the hexagonal RMnO3 system.

Abstract:Multiferroic materials, or materials that simultaneously possess two or more ferroic order parameters, have returned to the forefront of materials research. Driven by the desire to achieve new functionalities—such as electrical control of ferromagnetism at room temperature—researchers have undertaken a concerted effort to identify and understand the complexities of multiferroic materials. The ability to create high quality thin film multiferroics stands as one of the single most important landmarks in this flurry of research activity. In this review we discuss the basics of multiferroics including the important order parameters and magnetoelectric coupling in materials. We then discuss in detail the growth of single phase, horizontal multilayer, and vertical heterostructure multiferroics. The review ends with a look to the future and how multiferroics can be used to create new functionalities in materials.

Abstract:Specific heat studies of the Sr$_{1-x}$Ba$_x$Mn$_{1-y}$Ti$_y$O$_3$ polycrystalline samples performed by the relaxation and DSC methods over the temperature range 2 - 450 K are reported. Anomalies accompanying the antiferromagnetic-paramagnetic and ferroelectric-paraelectric phase transitions were measured and analyzed. The system studied is a promising multiferroic material of the 2$^{\text {nd}}$ type, in which a strong coupling between the magnetic and electric systems can be related to the fact that the same Mn$^{4+}$ ions are responsible for the two orderings. Analysis of the anomaly at the magnetic transition was done by using the advanced theory of the continuous transitions, in which the presence of higher order terms in the free energy is considered, and the parameters of the critical behavior of the system were estimated. It was found that, despite of earlier predictions, the transition loses the continuous character and can become the 1$^{\text {st}}$ order process for the Ti-containing samples. The anomalies accompanying the 1$^{\text{st}}$ order high-temperature ferroelectric transition were found to be hardly visible by using both techniques, which was ascribed to a wide temperature range of coexistence of the dielectric and ferroelectric phases.

Abstract:Orthorhombically distorted perovskite manganites, RMnO3 with R being a trivalent rare-earth ion, exhibit a variety of magnetic and electric phases including multiferroic (i.e., concurrently magnetic and ferroelectric) phases and fascinating magnetoelectric phenomena. We theoretically study the phase diagram of RMnO3 by constructing a microscopic spin model, which includes not only the superexchange interaction but also the single-ion anisotropy (SIA) and the Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction (DMI). Analysis of this model using the Monte Carlo method reproduces the experimental phase diagrams as functions of the R-ion radius, which contain two different multiferroic states, i.e., the ab-plane spin cycloid with ferroelectric polarization P∥a and the bc-plane spin cycloid with P∥c. The orthorhombic lattice distortion or the second-neighbor spin exchanges enhanced by this distortion exquisitely controls the keen competition between these two phases through tuning the SIA and DMI energies. This leads to a lattice-distortion-induced reorientation of P from a to c in agreement with the experiments. We also discuss spin structures in the A-type antiferromagnetic state, those in the cycloidal spin states, origin and nature of the sinusoidal collinear spin state, and many other issues.

Local atomic and magnetic structure of multiferroic (Sr,Ba)(Mn,Ti)O$_3$

Abstract:We present a detailed study of the local atomic and magnetic structure of the type-I multiferroic perovskite system (Sr,Ba)(Mn,Ti)O$_3$ using x-ray and neutron pair distribution function (PDF) analysis, polarized neutron scattering, and muon spin relaxation ($\mu$SR) techniques. The atomic PDF analysis reveals widespread nanoscale tetragonal distortions of the crystal structure even in the paraelectric phase with average cubic symmetry, corresponding to incipient ferroelectricity in the local structure. Magnetic PDF analysis, polarized neutron scattering, and $\mu$SR likewise confirm the presence of short-range antiferromagnetic correlations in the paramagnetic state, which grow in magnitude as the temperature approaches the magnetic transition. We show that these short-range magnetic correlations coincide with a reduction of the tetragonal (i.e. ferroelectric) distortion in the average structure, suggesting that short-range magnetism can play an important role in magnetoelectric and/or magnetostructural phenomena even without genuine long-range magnetic order. The reduction of the tetragonal distortion scales linearly with the local magnetic order parameter, pointing to spontaneous linear magnetoelectric coupling in this system. These findings provide greater insight into the multiferroic properties of (Sr,Ba)(Mn,Ti)O$_3$ and demonstrate the importance of investigating the local atomic and magnetic structure to gain a deeper understanding of the intertwined degrees of freedom in multiferroics.

Abstract:We combined pulsed field magnetization and first-principles spin-density calculations to reveal the magnetic field-temperature phase diagram and spin state character in multiferroic $[{({\mathrm{CH}}_{3})}_{2}{\mathrm{NH}}_{2}]\mathrm{Mn}{(\mathrm{HCOO})}_{3}$. Despite similarities with the rare earth manganites, the phase diagram is analogous to other Mn-based quantum magnets with a 0.31 T spin flop, a 15.3 T transition to the fully polarized state, and short-range correlations that persist above the ordering temperature. The experimentally accessible saturation field opens the door to exploration of the high-field phase.

Abstract:We bring together magnetization, infrared spectroscopy, and lattice dynamics calculations to uncover the magnetic field-temperature ( B- T) phase diagrams and vibrational properties of the [(CH3)2NH2] M(HCOO)3 ( M = Mn2+, Co2+, Ni2+) family of multiferroics. While the magnetically driven transition to the fully saturated state in [(CH3)2NH2]Mn(HCOO)3 takes place at 15.3 T, substitution with Ni or Co drives the critical fields up toward 100 T, an unexpectedly high energy scale for these compounds. Analysis of the infrared spectrum of the Mn and Ni compounds across TC reveals doublet splitting of the formate bending mode which functions as an order parameter of the ferroelectric transition. By contrast, [(CH3)2NH2]Co(HCOO)3 reveals a surprising framework rigidity across the order-disorder transition due to modest distortions around the Co2+ centers. The transition to the ferroelectric state is thus driven by the dimethylammonium cation freezing and the resulting hydrogen bonding. Under applied field, the Mn (and most likely, the Ni) compounds engage the formate bending mode to facilitate the transition to their fully saturated magnetic states, whereas the Co complex adopts a different mechanism involving formate stretching distortions to lower the overall magnetic energy. Similar structure-property relations involving substitution of transition-metal centers and control of the flexible molecular architecture are likely to exist in other molecule-based multiferroics.
Manipulation of Dy-Mn Coupling and Ferrielectric Phase Diagram of Dymn2o5: the Effect of Y Substitution of Dy

Abstract:DyMn2O5 is an extraordinary example in the family of multiferroic manganites and it accommodates both the 4f and 3d magnetic ions with strong Dy-Mn (4f-3d) coupling. The electric polarization origin is believed to arise not only from the Mn spin interactions but also from the Dy-Mn coupling. Starting from proposed scenario on ferrielectricity in DyMn2O5 where the exchange-strictions associated with the Mn3+-Mn4+-Mn3+ blocks and Dy3+-Mn4+-Dy3+ blocks generate the two ferroelectric sublattices, we perform a set of characterizations on the structure, magnetism, and electric polarization of Dy1-xYxMn2O5 in order to investigate the roles of Dy-Mn coupling in manipulating the ferrielectricity. It is revealed that the non-magnetic Y substitution of Dy suppresses gradually the Dy3+ spin ordering and the Dy-Mn coupling. Consequently, the ferroelectric sublattice generated by the exchange striction associated with the Dy3+-Mn4+-Dy3+ blocks is destabilized, but the ferroelectric sublattice generated by the exchange striction associated with the Mn3+-Mn4+-Mn3+ blocks remains less perturbed, enabling the ferrielectricity-ferroelectricity transitions with the Y substitution. A phenomenological ferrielectric domain model is suggested to explain the polarization reversal induced by the Y substitution. The present work presents a possible scenario of the multiferroic mechanism in not only DyMn2O5 but probably also other RMn2O5 members with strong 4f-3d coupling.
Coexistence of Two Cycloid-Phases in Multiferroic Rmno3: Consequence of the Next-Nearest-Neighbor Spin Interaction Modulations

Abstract:The modulation of the next-nearest-neighbor spin interaction in RMnO3-type manganites is considered and its effect on the multiferroic behaviors is investigated within the framework of classical Heisenberg model using Monte Carlo simulation. Two types of the modulations, i.e., the symmetric perturbations in which the interactions over the lattice are symmetrically modulated with an equal distribution to maintain the mean interaction invariant and the asymmetric perturbations in which the interactions over the lattice are randomly modulated with variable mean interaction, are taken into account. It is shown that both the types of modulations can drive the reorientation of the spiral spin order and thus lead to the coexistence of two cycloid-phases within appropriate magnitudes of modulation. The two multiferroic phase coexistence can be understood as the consequence of the competition between the single-ion anisotropy and the Dzyaloshinskii-Mariya interaction. Abstract:Abstract Multiferroics, where multiple ferroic orders coexist and are intimately coupled, promise novel applications in conceptually new devices on one hand, and on the other hand provide fascinating physics that is distinctly different from the physics of high-TC superconductors and colossal magnetoresistance manganites. In this mini-review, we highlight the recent progress of single-phase multiferroics in the exploration of new materials, efficient roadmaps for functionality enhancement, new phenomena beyond magnetoelectric coupling, and underlying novel physics. In the meantime, a slightly more detailed description is given of several multiferroics with ferrimagnetic orders and double-layered perovskite structure and also of recently emerging 2D multiferroics. Some emergent phenomena such as topological vortex domain structure, non-reciprocal response, and hybrid mechanisms for multiferroicity engineering and magnetoelectric coupling in various types of multiferroics will be briefly reviewed.
