Abstract:The two-hop relay algorithm with both the packet redundancy and erasure coding techniques serves as a promising routing algorithm to improve the packet delivery performance in mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs). This paper studies the packet delivery probability under this routing algorithm. We first develop a multi-dimensional Markov chain model to characterize the packet delivery process under the hybrid two-hop relay algorithm. Based on the Markov chain model, we then derive an analytical expression for the packet delivery probability in the considered network. Finally, simulation and theoretical results are provided to illustrate the efficiency of the developed model as well as our theoretical findings.

Abstract:We introduce and evaluate a very simple landmark-based network partition technique called Hierarchical Bipartition Routing (HBR) to support routing with delivery guarantee in wireless ad hoc sensor networks. It is a simple routing protocol that can easily be combined with any other greedy routing algorithm to obtain delivery guarantee. The efficiency of HBR increases if the network is sparse and contains obstacles. The space necessary to store the additional routing information at a node u is on average not larger than the size necessary to store the IDs of the neighbors of u. The amount of work to setup the complete data structure is on average proportional to flooding the entire network log(n) times, where n is the total number of sensor nodes. We evaluate the performance of HBR in combination with two simple energy-aware geographic greedy routing algorithms based on physical coordinates and virtual coordinates, respectively. Our simulations show that the difference between using HBR and a weighted shortest path to escape a dead-end is only a few percent in typical cases.

Abstract:This paper focuses on the delivery probability performance in a two-hop relay mobile ad hoc network (MANET) with erasure coding. Available works in this line either considered a simple extreme case of achieving the delivery probability 1, or assumed a simple traffic pattern with only one source-destination pair, or studied a very special MANET scenario (i.e., the sparsely distributed MANET) by assuming that whenever two nodes meet together they can transmit to each other. Obviously, such models cannot be applied for an accurate delivery probability analysis in the general MANETs where the interference, medium contention and traffic contention issues are of significant importance. In this paper, a general finite-state absorbing Markov chain theoretical framework is first developed to model the complicated message spreading process in the challenging MANETs. Based on the theoretical framework, closed-form expressions are further derived for the corresponding message delivery probability under any given message lifetime and message size, where all the above important issues in MANETs are carefully incorporated into analysis. As verified through extensive simulation studies, the new framework can be used to accurately predict the message delivery probability behavior and characterize its relationship with the message size, replication factor and node density there.
A Path Reliable Routing Protocol in Mobile Ad Hoc Networks

Abstract:In mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs), one of the critical issues consists of the design of routing algorithms that are robust to frequent path disruptions caused by hosts’ mobility. This paper analyzes random walk mobility model, and establishes the relationship between a link’s reliability and current lifetime via a conditional probability model. A path reliable routing algorithm is also developed, in which the proposed analytical model is employed. Simulation results show very good agreement to the analytical model, and indicate the benefits of the proposed routing protocol in terms of increasing path duration and packet delivery ratio, as well as reducing packet end-to-end delay.

Abstract:This paper presents a dual method of closed-form analysis and lightweight simulation that enables an evaluation of the performance of mobile ad hoc networks that is more realistic, efficient, and accurate than those found in existing publications. Some features accommodated by the new analysis are shadowing, exclusion and guard zones, and distance-dependent fading. Three routing protocols are examined: least-delay, nearest-neighbor, and maximum-progress routing. The tradeoffs among the path reliabilities, average conditional delays, average conditional number of hops, and area spectral efficiencies are examined.

Abstract:Ad-hoc networks are a new wireless networking paradigm for mobile hosts. Unlike conventional wireless networks, ad-hoc networks have no fixed network infrastructure or administrative support. The topology of the network changes dynamically as mobile nodes join or depart the network or radio links between nodes become unusable. In this paper we propose some efficient multi-path approaches that provide more secure routing schemes for ad-hoc network than previous ones. Within these approaches, more than one routing paths are selected. With the underlying coding technique, it can guarantee security against some malicious parties(it depends on how robust system is.) Moreover, we apply these schemes into existing ad-hoc network routing protocols, table-driven and on-demand routing algorithms. Finally, we derive the relation between some probabilities on our algorithms.

Abstract:Routing in mobile ad hoc networks remains as a challenging problem given the limited wireless bandwidth, users' mobility and potentially large scale. Recently, there has been a thrust of research to address these problems, including on-demand routing [1-2], geographical routing [6-8], virtual coordinates [15], etc. In this paper, we focus on geographical routing, which was shown to achieve good scalability without flooding, but it usually requires location information and can suffer from the severe dead end problem especially in sparse networks. Specifically, we propose a new Hop ID based routing protocol, which does not require any location information, yet achieves comparable performance with the shortest path routing. In addition, we design efficient algorithms for setting up the system and adapt to the node mobility quickly, and can effectively route out of dead ends. The extensive analysis and simulation show that the Hop ID based routing achieves efficient routing for mobile ad hoc networks with various density, irregular topologies and obstacles. © 2005 IEEE.

Abstract:1The authors are listed in alphabetical order. We consider the problem of secure unicast transmission between two nodes in a directed graph, where an adversary eavesdrops/jams a subset of nodes. This adversarial setting is in contrast to traditional ones where the adversary controls a subset of links. In particular, we study, in the main, the class of routing-only schemes (as opposed to those allowing coding inside the network). Routing-only schemes usually have low implementation complexity, yet a characterization of the rates achievable by such schemes was open prior to this work. We first propose an LP based solution for secure communication against eavesdropping, and show that it is information-theoretically rate-optimal among all routing-only schemes. The idea behind our design is to balance information flow in the network so that no subset of nodes observe “too much” information. Interestingly, we show that the rates achieved by our routing-only scheme are always at least as good as, and sometimes better, than those achieved by “naïve” network coding schemes (i.e. the rate-optimal scheme designed for the traditional scenario where the adversary controls links in a network rather than nodes.) We also demonstrate non-trivial network coding schemes that achieve rates at least as high as (and again sometimes better than) those achieved by our routing schemes, but leave open the question of characterizing the optimal rate-region of the problem under all possible coding schemes. We then extend these routing-only schemes to the adversarial node-jamming scenarios and show similar results. During the journey of our investigation, we also develop a new technique that has the potential to derive nontrivial bounds for general secure-communication schemes. On Self Adaptive Routing In Dynamic Environments - An Evaluation And Design Using A Simple, Probabilistic Scheme

Abstract:Recently we have seen an emergent trend of self adaptive routing in both Internet and wireless ad hoc networks. Although there are previous methods for computing the traffic equilibria of self adaptive routing (e.g., selfish routing), these methods use computationally demanding algorithms and require that a precise analytical model of the network be given. Also, it remains an open question how to design an adaptive routing scheme which ensures convergence to traffic equilibria in practice. In this paper we propose a simple, efficient, distributed probabilistic routing scheme for self adaptive routing in dynamic, realistic environments. Using both analysis and extensive simulations, we show that our scheme can converge to the desired traffic equilibrium (either user-optimal or network-optimal) very quickly. We find that user-optimal routing can achieve very close to optimal average latency in dynamic environments, but such performance often comes at the cost of seriously overloading certain links. To avoid link overloads, we improve adaptive routing by optimizing average user latency and link utilization simultaneously. Our evaluation shows that there is a trade-off between optimizing dual objectives, but the degradation in average latency is only marginal for typical link utilization requirements.

Abstract:This paper focus on the abstract model and complexity analysis of routing in mobile ad hoc system. Based on the Abstract State Machines theory, we provide a formal model ASM PBRAgent for mobile ad hoc system, on which the position based routing runs as a query. In the result, it is shown that the problem of position based routing is PSPACE-complete when the arity of each node's outgoing edges has a fixed upper bound, and the Yao-graph topology is an instance; on the other hand, the problem is EXPSPACE-complete if there is no fixed upper bound on the arity.
Opportunistic Routing with Congestion Diversity in Wireless Ad-hoc Networks

Abstract:We consider the problem of routing packets across a multi-hop network consisting of multiple sources of traffic and wireless links while ensuring bounded expected delay. Each packet transmission can be overheard by a random subset of receiver nodes among which the next relay is selected opportunistically. The main challenge in the design of minimum-delay routing policies is balancing the trade-off between routing the packets along the shortest paths to the destination and distributing traffic according to the maximum backpressure. Combining important aspects of shortest path and backpressure routing, this paper provides a systematic development of a distributed opportunistic routing policy with congestion diversity ({D-ORCD}). {D-ORCD} uses a measure of draining time to opportunistically identify and route packets along the paths with an expected low overall congestion. {D-ORCD} is proved to ensure a bounded expected delay for all networks and under any admissible traffic. Furthermore, this paper proposes a practical implementation which empirically optimizes critical algorithm parameters and their effects on delay as well as protocol overhead. Realistic Qualnet simulations for 802.11-based networks demonstrate a significant improvement in the average delay over comparative solutions in the literature. %Finally, various practical modifications to {D-ORCD} are proposed and their performance are evaluated.

Abstract:We show that given a set of randomly distributed wireless nodes with density n, when the transmission range r/sub n/ of wireless nodes satisfies /spl pi/r/sup 2//sub n/ /spl ges/ 3[(log n+c(n))/n], the localized Delaunay triangulation (LDel) [Xiang-Yang Li, G. Calinescu, and Peng-Jun Wan, 2002] is the same as the Delaunay triangulation with high probability, where c(n) /spl rarr/ /spl infin/ as n goes infinity. Our experiments show that the delivery rates of existing localized Delaunay triangulation is used instead of several previously proposed topologies, and the localized routing protocol based on Delaunay triangulation works well in practice.

Abstract:Routing in wireless communication systems such as ad hoc networks remains a challenging problem given the limited wireless bandwidth, users’ mobility and potentially large scale. Recently, a thrust of research has addressed these problems--the on-demand routing, geographical routing, and virtual coordinates. An Evaluation of Routing Reliability in Non-collaborative Opportunistic Networks

Abstract:An opportunistic network is a type of challenged network that has attracted a great deal of attention in recent years. While a number of schemes have been proposed to facilitate data dissemination in opportunistic networks, there is an implicit assumption that each participating peer behaves collaboratively. Consequently, these schemes may be vulnerable if there are uncooperative or malicious peers in the network. In this study, we identify five types of non-collaborative behavior, namely free rider, black hole, supernova, hypernova, and wormhole behavior, in opportunistic networks. We also evaluate the impacts of the five types of behavior on the data transmission performance of three widely used routing schemes. Using simulations as well as real-world traces of network mobility, we show that the data forwarding performance degrades significantly as the number of non-collaborative peers, except wormholes, increases. Moreover, we find that the three compared routing schemes can benefit from wormhole behavior, especially when the network connectivity is poor and the buffer size is limited.

Abstract:We address the problem of routing dynamic connections with differentiated reliability (DiR) requirements in wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) mesh networks when spare capacity sharing is allowed. The problem is called routing with DiR (ROWD). In order to meet the reliability requirement of each connection request, not only an active path (AP) but also a backup path (BP) or a set of backup segments (BSs) should be derived. We propose two novel heuristics, single-protection-segment- based heuristic (SPBH) and auxiliary-graph-based heuristic (AGBH), for problem ROWD. While SPBH computes a single BS to protect the AP, AGBH computes as many BSs as necessary to protect the AP. Numerical results from extensive simulations demonstrate the good performance of the two algorithms. (C) 2007 Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers.

Abstract:Many routing algorithms, proposed for ad hoc wireless networks, are based on source routing scheme. In routing protocols that use flooding, many routing messages are propagated unnecessarily. Gossiping can be used to significantly reduce the number of routing messages sent. When a route is broken, route recovery and maintenance are executed. However, these procedures consume many resources. With a reactive routing protocol, this leads to increased delay and routing overheads while route repair procedures are carried out. To minimize route breaking, it's important to find a route that endures longer time. Shortest path route has short lifetime especially in highly dense ad hoc wireless networks, and it's due to the edge effect. In this paper, we derive the statistic results of link and path availability properties in ad hoc network, and propose a pseudo gossip routing algorithm based on the link stability. This routing algorithm can select a reliable path that can last longer by using fewer routing messages as to be shown by the simulation results. © 2007 IEEE.

Abstract:Mobile Ad hoc NETworks (MANETs) often have fast-changing and unpredictable mobility. This is especially true for recently emerging mobile sensor networks [7] and delay tolerant networks [2], where extreme network conditions are prevalent. To better adjust to such network conditions, we propose to deconstruct the underlying node mobility into a set of abstractions that can be readily leveraged for driving dynamic routing decisions. In particular, we investigate the feasibility of using route lifetime to abstract mobility. Through extensive simulations on DSR, we demonstrate up to 31% improvement in packet delivery rate and 53% improvement in average end-to-end packet latency, using our proposed route prefetch and decay techniques that leverage knowledge of route lifetimes.

Abstract:Routing is a challenging problem for wireless ad hoc networks, especially when the nodes are mobile and spread so widely that in most cases multiple hops are needed to route a message from one node to another. In fact, it is known that any online routing protocol has a poor performance in the worst case, in a sense that there is a distribution of nodes resulting in bad routing paths for that protocol, even if the nodes know their geographic positions and the geographic position of the destination of a message is known. The reason for that is that radio holes in the ad hoc network may require messages to take long detours in order to get to a destination, which are hard to find in an online fashion. In this paper, we assume that the wireless ad hoc network can make limited use of long-range links provided by a global communication infrastructure like a cellular infrastructure or a satellite in order to compute an abstraction of the wireless ad hoc network that allows the messages to be sent along near-shortest paths in the ad hoc network. We present distributed algorithms that compute an abstraction of the ad hoc network in $\mathcal{O}\left(\log ^2 n\right)$ time using long-range links, which results in $c$-competitive routing paths between any two nodes of the ad hoc network for some constant $c$ if the convex hulls of the radio holes do not intersect. We also show that the storage needed for the abstraction just depends on the number and size of the radio holes in the wireless ad hoc network and is independent on the total number of nodes, and this information just has to be known to a few nodes for the routing to work.

Abstract:In partially connected ad hoc networks (PCANETs), the whole structure is partitioned into several unconnected regions. To address the communication problem between these regions, an on-demand routing technology based on task-relay (OR-TR) is proposed. Single or multiple task-relay nodes are adopted to act as the special communication medium in PCANETs. Simulations have been conducted to study the effects of task-relay nodes' moving speed and communication distance on the transmission delay.

Abstract:This paper introduces the up-to-date research in on-demand routing for ad hoc mobile networks. The on-demand routing protocols are divided into three categories: flat flooding routing, flat limited routing and hierarchy routing. In flat flooding routing protocols, DSR, ABR, AODV and ZRP are discussed. In flat limited routing protocols LAR and RDMAR are discussed. In hierarchy routing protocol CBRP is introduced. For each routing protocol, this paper not only introduces the contents of the routing protocol, but also the merits and drawbacks, and evaluates these protocols based on a given set of parameters such as communication complexity, time complexity, route metric, the range of route discovery, the periodically packets and route maintenance. This paper also evaluates some drawbacks of above routing protocols, for example initial route delay, supporting of unidirectional links and flooding broadcast, and proposes some optimized schema for these drawbacks. These schemas are cluster based hybrid routing schema to mitigate the flooding broadcast and initial route delay, and unidirectional ad hoc on-demand routing schema to support the ad hoc mobile networks with unidirectional links. Furthermore this paper proposes an optimization schema for limited routing protocols, which is that the intermediate nodes update the zone of route discovery by their newer location and/or distance information. Finally authors suggest the research direction in routing for ad hoc mobile wireless networks in the future.
