Abstract:We introduce a novel superconducting qubit architecture utilizing parallel arrays of Josephson junctions. This design offers a substantialy improved relative anharmonicity, typically within the range of $|\alpha_r| \approx 0.1 - 0.3$, while maintaining transition matrix elements in both the charge and flux channels that are on par with those of transmon qubits. Our proposed device also features exceptional tunability and includes a parameter regime akin to an enhanced version of the fluxonium qubit. Notably, it enables an additional order of magnitude reduction in matrix elements influenced by flux noise, thus further enhancing its suitability for quantum information processing applications.

Abstract:Most superconducting qubits operate in a regime dominated by either the electrical charge or the magnetic flux. Here we study an intermediate case: a hybridized charge-flux qubit with a third Josephson junction (JJ) added into the SQUID loop of the Cooper-pair box. This additional JJ allows the optimal design of a low-decoherence qubit. Both charge and flux 1/f noises are considered. Moreover, we show that an efficient quantum measurement of either the current or the charge can be achieved by using different area sizes for the third JJ.

Abstract:We investigate the quantum dynamics of a Cooper-pair box with a superconducting loop in the presence of a nonclassical microwave field. We demonstrate the existence of Rabi oscillations for both single- and multiphoton processes and, moreover, we propose a new quantum computing scheme (including one-bit and conditional two-bit gates) based on Josephson qubits coupled through microwaves.

Abstract:We realize a single-Josephson-junction transmon qubit shunted by a simple geometric inductor. We couple it capacitively to a conventional transmon and show that the ZZ interaction between the two qubits is completely suppressed when they are flux-biased to have opposite-sign anharmonicities. Away from the flux sweet spot of the inductively-shunted transmon, we demonstrate fast two-qubit interactions using first-order sideband transitions. The simplicity of this two-qubit-species circuit makes it promising for building large lattices of superconducting qubits with low coherent error and a rich gate set.

Abstract:The density of quasiparticles typically observed in superconducting qubits exceeds the value expected in equilibrium by many orders of magnitude. Can this out-of-equilibrium quasiparticle density still possess an energy distribution in equilibrium with the phonon bath? Here, we answer this question affirmatively by measuring the thermal activation of charge-parity switching in a transmon qubit with a difference in superconducting gap on the two sides of the Josephson junction. The quartic Blochnium: an anharmonic quasicharge superconducting qubit

Abstract:The quasicharge superconducting qubit realizes the dual of the transmon and shows strong robustness to flux and charge fluctuations thanks to a very large inductance closed on a Josephson junction. At the same time, a weak anharmonicity of the spectrum is inherited from the parent transmon, that introduces leakage errors and is prone to frequency crowding in multi-qubit setups. We propose a novel design that employs a quartic superinductor and confers a good degree of anharmonicity to the spectrum. The quartic regime is achieved through a properly designed chain of Josephson junction loops that shows minimal quantum fluctuations without introducing a severe dependence on the external fluxes.

Abstract:Superconducting quantum circuits are promising candidates for realizing quantum computation due to their intrinsic scalability. Here, we report the implementation of the refined Deutsch-Jozsa algorithm in a 3D superconducting transmon qutrit system. Such 3D superconducting systems usually preserve a relatively long coherence time. A qutrit can take advantage of the third level of a superconducting artificial atom and extends the Hilbert space. Compared with the two-qubit system used for realizing Deutsch-Jozsa algorithm, the employment of qutrit simplifies the hardware design. This simplification and the intrinsic long coherence time jointly lead to a higher fidelity than in previous transmon implementation [DiCarlo etal., Nature 460 (7252), 240-244 (2009)].

Abstract:We propose a novel qubit architecture based on a planar c -axis Josephson junction between a thin flake d -wave superconductor, such as a high- Tc cuprate Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+x , and a conventional s -wave superconductor. When operated in the transmon regime the device—that we call " d mon"—becomes insensitive to offset charge fluctuations and, importantly, exhibits at the same time energy level spectrum with strong anharmonicity that is widely tunable through the device geometry and applied magnetic flux. Abstract:Tunable couplers in superconducting quantum computers have enabled fast and accurate two-qubit gates, with reported high fidelities over 99% in various architectures and gate-implementation schemes. However, there are few tunable couplers whose performance in multiqubit systems is clarified, except for the most widely used one: single-transmon coupler (STC). Achieving similar accuracy to isolated two-qubit systems remains challenging due to various undesirable couplings but is necessary for scalability. In this work, we numerically analyze a system of three fixed-frequency qubits coupled via two double-transmon couplers (DTCs) where nearest-neighbor qubits are highly detuned and also next-nearest-neighbor ones are nearly resonant. The DTC is a recently proposed tunable coupler, which consists of two fixed-frequency transmons coupled through a common loop with an additional Josephson junction. We find that the DTC cannot only reduce undesired residual couplings sufficiently, as well as in isolated two-qubit systems, but also enables implementations of 30-ns CZ gates and individual and simultaneous 10-ns π/2 pulses with fidelities over 99.99%. For comparison, we also investigate the system where the DTCs are replaced by the STCs. The results show that the DTC outperforms the STC in terms of both residual coupling suppression and gate accuracy in the above systems. A superconducting quantum information processor with high qubit connectivity

Abstract:Coupling of transmon qubits to resonators that serve as storage for information provides alternative routes for quantum computing. Such a scheme paves the way for achieving high qubit connectivity, which is a great challenge in cQED systems. Implementations either involve an ancillary transmon's direct excitation, or virtual photon interactions. Virtual coupling scheme promises advantages such as the parallel, virtual gate operations and better coherence properties since the transmon's decoherence effects are suppressed. However, virtual gates rely on nonuniform frequency separation of the modes in the system and acquiring this feature is not a straightforward task. Here, we propose an architecture that incorporates the four-wave mixing capabilities of the transmon into a chain of resonators coupled collectively by qubits in between. The system, consisting of numerous resonators all operating within the single mode approximation, maintains the above-mentioned nonuniformity by accommodating different resonators with appropriate frequencies.

Abstract:Enhancing the capabilities of superconducting quantum hardware, requires higher gate fidelities and lower crosstalk, particularly in larger scale devices, in which qubits are coupled to multiple neighbors. Progress towards both of these objectives would highly benefit from the ability to fully control all interactions between pairs of qubits. Here we propose a new coupler model that allows to fully decouple dispersively detuned Transmon qubits from each other, i.e. ZZ-crosstalk is completely suppressed while maintaining a maximal localization of the qubits' computational basis states. We further reason that, for a dispersively detuned Transmon system, this can only be the case if the anharmonicity of the coupler is positive at the idling point. A simulation of a 40ns CZ-gate for a lumped element model suggests that achievable process infidelity can be pushed below the limit imposed by state-of-the-art coherence times of Transmon qubits. On the other hand, idle gates between qubits are no longer limited by parasitic interactions. We show that our scheme can be applied to large integrated qubit grids, where it allows to fully isolate a pair of qubits, that undergoes a gate operation, from the rest of the chip while simultaneously pushing the fidelity of gates to the limit set by the coherence time of the individual qubits.

Abstract:We experimentally investigate inductively shunted transmon-type artificial atoms as an alternative to address the challenges of low anharmonicity and the need for strong charge dispersion in superconducting quantum systems. We characterize several devices with varying geometries and parameters (Josephson energies and capacitances), and find a good agreement with calculations. Our approach allows us to retain the benefits of transmon qubit engineering and fabrication technology and high coherence, while potentially increasing anharmonicity. The approach offers an alternative platform for the development of scalable multi-qubit systems in quantum computing.

Methods to achieve near-millisecond energy relaxation and dephasing times for a superconducting transmon qubit

Abstract:Superconducting qubits are one of the most promising physical systems for implementing quantum computers. However, executing quantum algorithms of practical computational advantage requires further improvements in the fidelities of qubit operations, which are currently limited by the energy relaxation and dephasing times of the qubits. Here, we report our measurement results of a high-coherence transmon qubit with energy relaxation and echo dephasing times surpassing those in the existing literature. We measure a qubit frequency of 2.890 GHz, an energy relaxation time with a median of 502 us and a maximum of (765 +/- 82.6) us, and an echo dephasing time with a median of 541 us and a maximum of (1057 +/- 138) us. We report in detail our design, fabrication process, and measurement setup to facilitate the reproduction and wide adoption of high-coherence transmon qubits in the academia and industry.

Abstract:Superconducting transmon qubits have established as a leading candidate for quantum computation, as well as a flexible platform for exploring exotic quantum phases and dynamics. However, physical coupling naturally yields isotropic transverse interactions between qubits, restricting their access to diverse quantum phases that require spatially dependent interactions. Here, we demonstrate the simultaneous realization of both pairing (XX-YY) and hopping (XX+YY) interactions between transmon qubits by Floquet engineering. The coherent superposition of these interactions enables independent control over the XX and YY terms, yielding anisotropic transverse interactions. By aligning the transverse interactions along a 1D chain of six qubits, as calibrated via Aharonov-Bohm interference in synthetic space, we synthesize a transverse field Ising chain model and explore its dynamical phase transition under varying external field. The scalable synthesis of anisotropic transverse interactions paves the way for the implementation of more complex physical systems requiring spatially dependent interactions, enriching the toolbox for engineering quantum phases with superconducting qubits.

Abstract:We design and fabricate a compact superconducting qubit circuit made of nanothick NbN film on a high-resistivity silicon substrate, carrying seven transmon qubits. By comparing with the conventional superconducting qubit circuits made of superconducting films with hundred-nanometer thickness, our superconducting qubit circuit has much smaller size in the readout circuit, whose resonator length is only about 1/20 of that in a conventional superconducting circuit. Transmons are measured and characterized in the frequency and time domains with different flux bias. The transition frequency f01 can be adjusted in the range of several GHz. The qubit circuits made of such nanothick material with high kinetic inductance are promising in the integration of quantum circuits.(c) 2023 Author(s). Minimal Kitaev-transmon qubit based on double quantum dots

Abstract:Minimal Kitaev chains composed of two semiconducting quantum dots coupled via a grounded superconductor have emerged as a promising platform to realize and study Majorana bound states (MBSs). We propose a hybrid qubit based on a Josephson junction between two such double quantum dots (DQDs) embedded in a superconducting qubit geometry. The qubit makes use of the $4{\pi}$-Josephson effect in the Kitaev junction to create a subspace based on the even/odd fermionic parities of the two DQD arrays hosting MBSs. Deep in the transmon regime, we demonstrate that by performing circuit QED spectroscopy on such hybrid Kitaev-Transmon "Kitmon" qubit one could observe distinct MBS features in perfect agreement with precise analytical predictions in terms of DQD parameters only. This agreement allows to extract the Majorana polarization in the junction from the microwave response.

Abstract:The "quantronium" is a superconducting qubit consisting of a split Cooper pair box in which a large tunnel junction is inserted. This circuit has a special bias point where the Larmor frequency is, to first order, insensitive to fluctuations in the bias parameters -- the charge of the box island and the phase of the large junction. At this optimal working point, the state of the qubit can be determined by dispersive measurements that probe the second derivative of the state energy with respect to these bias parameters. We use the quantronium phase degree of freedom to perform a non-linear, dispersive measurement of its inductive response using bifurcation amplification. This novel readout projects the state of the qubit in a few nanoseconds, and its latching property allows us to record the resulting information in a few hundred nanoseconds. We have measured, using this technique, Rabi oscillations and Ramsey fringes with an improved signal to noise ratio and contrast. The speed of this new readout scheme also opens the door for a new class of experiments which would characterize the relaxation processes associated with the measurement protocol.

Generalized transmon Hamiltonian for Andreev spin qubits

Abstract:We solve the problem of an interacting quantum dot embedded in a Josephson junction between two superconductors with finite charging energy described by the transmon (Cooper pair box) Hamiltonian. The approach is based on the flat-band approximation of the Richardson model, which reduces the Hilbert space to the point where exact diagonalisation is possible while retaining all states that are necessary to describe the low energy phenomena. The presented method accounts for the physics of the quantum dot, the Josephson effect and the Coulomb repulsion (charging energy) at the same level. In particular, it captures the quantum fluctuations of the superconducting phase as well as the coupling between the superconducting phase and the quantum dot (spin) degrees of freedom. The method can be directly applied for modelling Andreev spin qubits embedded in transmon circuits in all parameter regimes, for describing time-dependent processes, and for the calculation of transition matrix elements for microwave-driven transmon, spin-flip and mixed transitions that involve coupling to charge or current degree of freedom.
