Abstract:We investigate if theories yielding bouncing cosmological models also generate wormhole solutions. We show that two of them present sensible traversable static wormhole solutions, while for the third possibility such solutions are absent.

Abstract:In this article, the implementation of black-bounce solutions in $f(R)$ theories is investigated. Black-bounce solutions are regular configurations of the static spherically symmetric space-time, containing both black holes and wormholes structures. In General Relativity (GR), black-bounce solution implies violation of the energy conditions. We investigate the same issue in $f(R)$ theories using two strategies: first, supposing a given form for the $f(R)$ function and then determining the matter behavior; second, imposing a condition on the matter density and obtaining the resulting $f(R)$ function. In all cases, a given structure for the metric functions is supposed. Violation of the energy conditions still occur but they are less severe than in the corresponding GR cases. We propose a zero-density model that has horizons, which differs from the GR case. We also propose a model with positive energy density and show that $\rho+p_r>0$, which was not the case in GR.

Abstract:Key results from the literature pertaining to a class of nonsingular black hole mimickers are explored. The family of candidate spacetimes is for now labelled the `black-bounce' family, stemming from the original so-called `Simpson--Visser' spacetime in static spherical symmetry. All model geometries are analysed through the lens of standard general relativity, are globally free from curvature singularities, pass all weak-field observational tests, and smoothly interpolate between regular black holes and traversable wormholes. The discourse is segregated along geometrical lines, with candidate spacetimes each belonging to one of: static spherical symmetry, spherical symmetry with dynamics, and stationary axisymmetry.

Abstract:Modern Physics Letters A, Ahead of Print. This paper examines the behavior of the universe around the bouncing point in the background of [math] theory, where [math] is the non-metricity and [math] is the trace of the energy–momentum tensor. We derive the field equations that describe gravitational phenomena in the existence of non-metricity and matter source terms. By applying the reconstruction method for the Hubble parameter, a phenomenon of the bouncing universe for homogeneous spacetime filled with perfect fluid is studied. We consider specific models of this modified theory to evaluate the behavior of various cosmic parameters such as the Hubble, deceleration, equation of state and fluid parameters. When the null energy condition is violated, it follows a bouncing behavior. It is found that spacetime is composed of isotropic fluid, where a big bounce can occur and the universe turns into extremely unstable. We conclude that [math] gravity successfully explains the early and late time cosmic expansion and evolution.

On black bounce space-times in non-linear electrodynamics

Abstract:One of the main issues in gravitation is the presence of singularities in the most common space-time solutions of General Relativity, as the case of black holes. A way of constructing regular solutions that remove spacelike singularities consists in implement a bounce on such space-time, leading to what is usually known as black bounce space-times. Such space-times are known to describe regular black holes or traversable wormholes. However, one of the main issues lies on reconstructing the appropriate source that leads to such a solution. In this paper, a reconstruction method is implemented to show that such types of metrics can be well accommodated in non-linear electrodynamics with the presence of a scalar field. Some of the most important black bounces solutions are reconstructed in this framework, both in 3+1 as in 2+1 dimensions. For the first time in the literature, these solutions have an electrically charged source of matter from non-linear electrodynamics. Specific features are indicated that distinguish electric sources from magnetic ones, previously found for the same space-times.

Non-singular Bounce Transitions in the Multiverse

Abstract:According to classical GR, negative-energy (AdS) bubbles in the multiverse terminate in big crunch singularities. It has been conjectured, however, that the fundamental theory may resolve these singularities and replace them by non-singular bounces. Here we explore possible dynamics of such bounces using a simple modification of the Friedmann equation, which ensures that the scale factor bounces when the matter density reaches some critical value ρ_c. This is combined with a simple scalar field `landscape', where the energy barriers between different vacua are small compared to ρ_c. We find that the bounce typically results in a transition to another vacuum, with a scalar field displacement Δϕ∼ 1 in Planck units. If the new vacuum is AdS, we have another bounce, and so on, until the field finally transits to a positive-energy (de Sitter) vacuum. We also consider perturbations about the homogeneous solution and discuss some of their amplification mechanisms (e.g., tachyonic instability and parametric resonance). For a generic potential, these mechanisms are much less efficient than in models of slow-roll inflation. But the amplification may still be strong enough to cause the bubble to fragment into a mosaic of different vacua.

Abstract:Gauss-Bonnet formula is used to derive a new and simple theorem of nonexistence of vacuum static nonsingular lorentzian wormholes. We also derive simple proofs for the nonexistence of lorentzian wormhole solutions for some classes of static matter such as, for instance, real scalar fields with a generic potential obeying $\phi V'(\phi) \ge 0$ and massless fermions fields.

Abstract:So-called “regular black holes” are a topic currently of considerable interest in the general relativity and astrophysics communities. Herein we investigate a particularly interesting regular black hole spacetime described by the line element This spacetime neatly interpolates between the standard Schwarzschild black hole and the Morris-Thorne traversable wormhole; at intermediate stages passing through a black-bounce (into a future incarnation of the universe), an extremal null-bounce (into a future incarnation of the universe), and a traversable wormhole. As long as the parameter a is non-zero the geometry is everywhere regular, so one has a somewhat unusual form of “regular black hole”, where the “origin” r=0 can be either spacelike, null, or timelike. Thus this spacetime generalizes and broadens the class of “regular black holes” beyond those usually considered.

Braneworld Black Bounce to Transversable Wormhole

Abstract:We provide a $5D$ generalization of the Hawking {\it et al.} black string in a Randall Sundrum setup. The embedded $4D$ geometry corresponds to the Simpson-Visser (SV) spacetime, which can represent a traversable wormhole, a one-way wormhole, or a regular black hole. To achieve this, we linearly deform both the bulk geometry and the bulk matter distribution with respect to a coupling constant. These deformations induce a transition from a $5D$ vacuum AdS distribution to an anisotropic distribution. The latter results in the induced geometry on the brane transitioning from a singular Schwarzschild spacetime to a regularized SV spacetime. Since there are no sources or matter fields on the brane, we can assert that the induced SV geometry on the brane arises from the influence of geometrical and matter deformations in the bulk. Thus, the central singularity is suppressed. We determine the cases where the energy conditions are either satisfied or violated. Our spacetime is asymptotically radial AdS, which is intriguing given the absence of a global AdS box that would prevent instability under larger wavelength perturbations. Therefore, it is no longer appropriate to claim that instability exists for very small perturbations near the AdS horizon.

Abstract:We explore a static and stationary black bounce geometry inspired by Loop Quantum Gravity (LQG), focusing on how LQG corrections and regularization parameters affect its properties. Building on the spherically symmetric and static black hole solution from \cite{Kelly:2020uwj}, we trace its origin to Non-Linear Electrodynamics (NED) with electric and magnetic charges and check the energy conditions (NEC, WEC, SEC). By extending the geometry using the Simpson-Visser procedure, we construct a black hole-wormhole bounce structure, influenced by LQG parameters. We analyze the horizon structure to constrain parameters for black holes and wormholes, and examine curvature and new sources including a phantom-type scalar field to ensure spacetime regularity and adherence to energy conditions. Thermodynamic properties are also studied, revealing the existence of remnants and phase transitions. Additionally, we derive a rotating black bounce solution, verifying its regularity, and putting forward that the spherical bouncing surface turns into an ellipsoid with no ring singularity. Finally, we find that increasing the LQG parameter leads to smaller ergospheres and reduced shadows, with potential implications for observational astrophysics and quantum gravitational signatures.

To bounce or not to bounce in generalized Proca theory and beyond

Abstract:It is notoriously difficult to construct a stable non-singular bouncing cosmology that avoids all possible instabilities throughout the entire evolution of the universe. In this work, we explore whether a non-singular bounce driven by a specific class of modifications of General Relativity, the vector-tensor generalized Proca theories, can be constructed without encountering any pathologies in linear perturbation theory. We find that such models unavoidably lead to either an instability in the matter sector or strong coupling in the scalar one. As our analysis is performed in a gauge-independent way, this result can be cast in the form of a no-go theorem for non-singular bounces with generalized Proca. In contrast to the no-go theorem found for Horndeski theories, however, it cannot be evaded by considering beyond generalized Proca theory. At the core of our result lies the non-dynamical nature of the temporal component of the vector field, which renders it an ill-suited mediator for a bouncing solution.

Abstract:Crude comparison between four alternative proposals for the very definition of a wormhole is provided, all of which were intended to apply to the dynamical cases. An interesting dynamical solution, based upon large scale magnetic fields, is used for the comparisons. Such a solution goes beyond the perfect fluid approximation due to an anisotropic pressure component, bringing to the fore some unsuspected features of those definitions. Certain notions as reversible traversability are claimed as a way to select among those definitions the best suited one to represent our intuition of what a wormhole solution is expected to be.

Abstract:We consider static and spherically symmetric wormhole solutions in extended metric-affine theories of gravity supposing that stability and traversability of these objects can be achieved by means of the geometric degrees of freedom. In particular, we consider $f(R)$ metric, $f(T)$ teleparallel, and $f(Q)$ symmetric teleparallel models where curvature, torsion, and non-metricity rule entirely the background geometry without invoking any exotic energy-momentum tensor as matter field source. Starting from the flaring out and null energy conditions, we gather together a series of constraints which allow us to state that stable and traversable wormholes can be derived in a purely geometric approach resorting to modified gravity theories with more degrees of freedom than general relativity.

Abstract:We construct a general class of modified Ellis-Bronnikov wormholes, where one asymptotic Minkowski region is replaced by a bounded 2-sphere core, characterized by an asymptotic finite areal radius. We pursue an in-depth analysis of the resulting geometry, outlining that geodesic completeness is also guaranteed when the area function asymptotically shrinks to zero. Moreover, we perform an analysis of the circular orbits present in our model and conclude that stable circular orbits are allowed in the bounded region. As a consequence, a stable light ring may exist in the inner region and trapped orbits may appear within this bounded region. Such internal structure suggests that the bounded region can trap perturbations. Then, we study the evolution of scalar perturbations, bringing out how these geometric configurations can in principle affect the time-domain profiles of quasinormal modes, pointing out the distinctive features with respect to other black hole or wormhole geometries. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevD.110.044058 © 2024 American Physical Society

Traversable Wormholes from Loop Quantum Gravity

Abstract:This study introduces and investigates Lorentzian traversable wormhole solutions rooted in Loop Quantum Gravity (LQG). The static and spherically symmetric solutions to be examined stem from the energy density sourcing self-dual regular black holes discovered by L. Modesto, relying on the parameters associated with LQG, which account for the quantum nature of spacetime. We specifically focus on macroscopic wormholes characterized by small values of these parameters. Our analysis encompasses zero-tidal solutions and those with non-constant redshift functions, exploring immersion diagrams, curvatures, energy conditions, equilibrium requirements, and the requisite quantity of exotic matter to sustain these wormholes. The investigation underscores the influence of LQG parameters on these features, highlighting the pivotal role of spacetime's quantum properties in shaping these wormholes and governing their behavior.

Abstract:Black bounces are spacetimes that can be interpreted as either black holes or wormholes depending on specific parameters. In this study, we examine the Simpson-Visser and Bardeen-type solutions as black bounces and investigate the gravitational wave in the background of these solutions. We then explore the displacement and velocity memory effects by analyzing the deviation of two neighboring geodesics and their derivatives influenced by the magnetic charge parameter a. This investigation aims to trace the magnetic charge in the gravitational memory effect. Additionally, we consider another family of traversable wormhole solutions obtained from non-exotic matter sources to trace the electric charge Q_e in the gravitational memory effect, which can be determined from the far field asymptotic. Furthermore, this research aims to explore the gravitational memory effect related to the variation in Bondi mass for the Simpson-Visser and Bardeen-Type black bounces. The investigation will also be conducted on a traversable wormhole solution that does not require any exotic field. This study holds importance in not only identifying compact objects such as wormholes through gravitational memory effects but also in observing the charge Qe, which offers a tangible manifestation of Wheeler's idea of "electric charge without charge."

Abstract:Exact solutions of traversable wormholes were recently found under the assumption of spherical symmetry and the existence of a non-static conformal symmetry. In this paper, we verify that in the case of the conformally symmetric spacetimes with a non-static vector field generating the symmetry, the conformal factor $\psi$ can be physically interpreted in terms of a measurable quantity, namely, the tangential velocity of a massive test particle moving in a stable circular orbit in the spacetime. Physical properties of the rotational velocity of test particles and of the redshift of radiation emitted by ultra-relativistic particles rotating around these hypothetical general relativistic objects are further discussed. Finally, specific characteristics and properties of gravitational bremsstrahlung emitted by charged particles in geodesic motion in conformally symmetric wormhole geometries are also explored.
