Abstract:As collections of 3D models continue to grow, reusing model parts allows generation of novel model variations. Naively swapping parts across models, however, leads to implausible results, especially when mixing parts across different model families. Hence, the user has to manually ensure that the final model remains functionally valid. We claim that certain symmetric functional arrangements (sFarr-s), which are special arrangements among symmetrically related substructures, bear close relation to object functions. Hence, we propose a purely geometric approach based on such substructures to match, replace, and position triplets of parts to create non-trivial, yet functionally plausible, model variations. We demonstrate that starting even from a small set of models such a simple geometric approach can produce a diverse set of non-trivial and plausible model variations.

It seems that as soon as a new technology emerges, we respond with fear and alarm at how this may fundamentally alter our cognition or behavior in some way. Broinowski ( Citation 2022 ) charted these unfulfilled prophecies, ranging from Plato's predictions that the written word would destroy human memory and weaken the mind, to fears that the advent of the novel in the eighteenth century would lead to a rise in immoral behavior, to more recent and persistent claims that video games beget violence.

Abstract:Functional languages with strong static type systems have beneficial properties to help ensure program correctness and reliability. Surprisingly, their practical significance in applications is low relative to other languages lacking in those dimensions. In this paper, the programs-as-proofs analogy is taken seriously to gain speculative insights by analysis of creation habits in the proof-centric discipline of mathematics. Viewed in light of this analogy, a sampling of mathematicians' attitudes towards formal proof suggests that the crucial role of intuition and experimentation in programming tasks may be under appreciated, hinting at a possible explanation of the challenges rigorously disciplined languages face in practical applications.

Abstract:This report describes the development and use of an online teaching tool giving students exercises in logical modelling, or \emph{formalisation} as it is called in the older literature. The original version of the site, `Logic for Fun', dates from 2001, though it was little used except by small groups of students at the Australian National University. It is currently in the process of being replaced by a new version, free to all Internet users, intended to be promoted widely as a useful addition to both online and traditional logic courses.

Abstract:The relation between Science (what we can explain) and Art (what we can't) has long been acknowledged and while every science contains an artistic part, every art form also needs a bit of science. Among all scientific disciplines, programming holds a special place for two reasons. First, the artistic part is not only undeniable but also essential. Second, and much like in a purely artistic discipline, the act of programming is driven partly by the notion of aesthetics: the pleasure we have in creating beautiful things. Even though the importance of aesthetics in the act of programming is now unquestioned, more could still be written on the subject. The field called "psychology of programming" focuses on the cognitive aspects of the activity, with the goal of improving the productivity of programmers. While many scientists have emphasized their concern for aesthetics and the impact it has on their activity, few computer scientists have actually written about their thought process while programming. What makes us like or dislike such and such language or paradigm? Why do we shape our programs the way we do? By answering these questions from the angle of aesthetics, we may be able to shed some new light on the art of programming. Starting from the assumption that aesthetics is an inherently transversal dimension, it should be possible for every programmer to find the same aesthetic driving force in every creative activity they undertake, not just programming, and in doing so, get deeper insight on why and how they do things the way they do. On the other hand, because our aesthetic sensitivities are so personal, all we can really do is relate our own experiences and share it with others, in the hope that it will inspire them to do the same. My personal life has been revolving around three major creative activities, of equal importance: programming in Lisp, playing Jazz music, and practicing Aikido. But why so many of them, why so different ones, and why these specifically? By introspecting my personal aesthetic sensitivities, I eventually realized that my tastes in the scientific, artistic, and physical domains are all motivated by the same driving forces, hence unifying Lisp, Jazz, and Aikido as three expressions of a single essence, not so different after all. Lisp, Jazz, and Aikido are governed by a limited set of rules which remain simple and unobtrusive. Conforming to them is a pleasure. Because Lisp, Jazz, and Aikido are inherently introspective disciplines, they also invite you to transgress the rules in order to find your own. Breaking the rules is fun. Finally, if Lisp, Jazz, and Aikido unify so many paradigms, styles, or techniques, it is not by mere accumulation but because they live at the meta-level and let you reinvent them. Working at the meta-level is an enlightening experience. Understand your aesthetic sensitivities and you may gain considerable insight on your own psychology of programming. Abstract:Mathematical models are increasingly used in both academia and the pharmaceutical industry to understand how phenotypes emerge from systems of molecular interactions. However, their current construction as monolithic sets of equations presents a fundamental barrier to progress. Overcoming this requires modularity, enabling sub-systems to be specified independently and combined incrementally, and abstraction, enabling general properties to be specified independently of specific instances. These in turn require models to be represented as programs rather than as datatypes. Programmable modularity and abstraction enables libraries of modules to be created for generic biological processes, which can be instantiated and re-used repeatedly in different contexts with different components. We have developed a computational infrastructure to support this. We show here why these capabilities are needed, what is required to implement them and what can be accomplished with them that could not be done previously.

Abstract:We present a method for logical specification of the behavior of a system based on the specification of its components and for representing and specifying the effect of a class of communication "signaling pathways" among them. Variations in the actions and effects (semantics) of the pathways can be seen in the resulting system. We show how to "enrich" the behavior of the original components by exactly what is provided by the signaling pathways. This has the potential to allow a formal proof of a property of the system as a whole, or a formal diagnosis why a system of communicating modules may not satisfy a desired specification, and if and how it can be "fixed." There are five distinct stages in our view: 1. A description of the connections between potential components at the level of which potential modules are connected. 2. Specific choices for those modules 3. An "elaboration" of the connections among different modules to connections among members of those different modules 4. A description of the semantics of those connections (what they actually do) 5. A "padding" of the modules chosen in step 2 to allow for the action of the connections (step 3), as described in step 4. The formalism is completely hierarchical -- in other words, the formalism works equally for the system as a whole, for each of the modules, and for any larger system in which the original system is a component. As it turns out, for whatever reason -- perhaps evolutionary advantage optimization at the right level of abstraction -- many biological systems are hierarchically modular, with the modules communicating via various pathways. Thus, a formalism such as the one presented here could have application to questions in biology.

Abstract:Integrating diverse formalisms into modular knowledge representation systems offers increased expressivity, modeling convenience and computational benefits. We introduce concepts of abstract modules and abstract modular systems to study general principles behind the design and analysis of model-finding programs, or solvers, for integrated heterogeneous multi-logic systems. We show how abstract modules and abstract modular systems give rise to transition systems, which are a natural and convenient representation of solvers pioneered by the SAT community. We illustrate our approach by showing how it applies to answer set programming and propositional logic, and to multi-logic systems based on these two formalisms.

Classical Sorting Algorithms as a Model of Morphogenesis: self-sorting arrays reveal unexpected competencies in a minimal model of basal intelligence

Abstract:The emerging field of Diverse Intelligence seeks to identify, formalize, and understand commonalities in behavioral competencies across a wide range of implementations. Especially interesting are simple systems that provide unexpected examples of memory, decision-making, or problem-solving in substrates that at first glance do not appear to be complex enough to implement such capabilities. We seek to develop tools to help understand the minimal requirements for such capabilities, and to learn to recognize and predict basal forms of intelligence in unconventional substrates. Here, we apply novel analyses to the behavior of classical sorting algorithms, short pieces of code which have been studied for many decades. To study these sorting algorithms as a model of biological morphogenesis and its competencies, we break two formerly-ubiquitous assumptions: top-down control (instead, showing how each element within a array of numbers can exert minimal agency and implement sorting policies from the bottom up), and fully reliable hardware (instead, allowing some of the elements to be "damaged" and fail to execute the algorithm). We quantitatively characterize sorting activity as the traversal of a problem space, showing that arrays of autonomous elements sort themselves more reliably and robustly than traditional implementations in the presence of errors. Moreover, we find the ability to temporarily reduce progress in order to navigate around a defect, and unexpected clustering behavior among the elements in chimeric arrays whose elements follow one of two different algorithms. The discovery of emergent problem-solving capacities in simple, familiar algorithms contributes a new perspective to the field of Diverse Intelligence, showing how basal forms of intelligence can emerge in simple systems without being explicitly encoded in their underlying mechanics.

Abstract:Our aim here is to illustrate how the benefits of structural corecursion can be found in a broader swath of the programming landscape than previously thought. Beginning from a tutorial on structural corecursion in the total, pure functional language Agda, we show how these same ideas are mapped to familiar concepts in a variety of different languages. We show how corecursion can be done in strict functional languages like Scheme, and even escapes the functional paradigm entirely, showing up in the natural expression of common object-oriented features found in languages like Python and Java. Opening up structural corecursion to a much wider selection of languages and paradigms -- and therefore, also to a much larger audience of programmers -- lets us also ask how corecursion interacts with computational effects. Of note, we demonstrate that combining structural corecursion with effects can increase its expressive power. We show a classical version of corecursion -- using first-class control made possible by Scheme's classical call/cc -- that enables us to write some new stream-processing algorithms that aren't possible in effect-free languages.

As usual, the method of teaching the computer how to do its own combinatorics, and to use "analysis" (that is really part of discrete math) to enumerate challenging combinatorial objects is even more interesting than the theorems and even the algorithm. Of course, formulas are dead, long live algorithms! But even algorithms are dead, long live meta-algorithms!!

Modularity and Separate Compilation in Logic Programming

Abstract:The ability to compose code in a modular fashion is important to the construction of large programs. In the logic programming setting, it is desirable that such capabilities be realized through logic-based devices. We describe an approach for doing this here. In our scheme a module corresponds to a block of code whose external view is mediated by a signature. Thus, signatures impose a form of hiding that is explained logically via existential quantifications over predicate, function and constant names. Modules interact through the mechanism of accumulation that translates into conjoining the clauses in them while respecting the scopes of existential quantifiers introduced by signatures. We show that this simple device for statically structuring name spaces suffices for realizing features related to code scoping for which the dynamic control of predicate definitions was earlier considered necessary. The module capabilities we present have previously been implemented via the compile-time inlining of accumulated modules. This approach does not support separate compilation. We redress this situation by showing how each distinct module can be compiled separately and inlining can be realized by a later, complementary and equally efficient linking phase.

Abstract:Spreadsheets are a widespread functional programming paradigm that offer liveness and directness of interaction. However, spreadsheets are notoriously error-prone and difficult to debug. To overcome this limitation and improve the expressive power of spreadsheets, we propose an extension to the spreadsheet paradigm in the form of sheet-defined lambdas – user-defined functions that abstract computations on the sheet. This concept was developed and deployed in our web-based spreadsheet application named Lattice. We evaluate this approach through a user study which compared the user experience of programming in a spreadsheet with and without lambdas, as well as the difference in performance between learner (N = 12) and experienced (N = 12) programmers. The study measured participant task performance (task time, success rate and number of errors) and the quality of their user experience of using Lattice (video recordings of use, interviews and questionnaire responses). Our findings indicate that programming with lambdas is not only more efficient than writing formulas in a conventional way, but also provides a rewarding hedonic experience. However, we found that learners perceived the concept of functional abstractions with lambdas as difficult to comprehend; while experienced programmers noted potential utilitarian advantages that aid in managing the complexity of a spreadsheet program. The results obtained in this work contribute to a better understanding of human-spreadsheet interaction and can inform the future design of user-friendly computational systems.

Modular stratification and magic sets for Datalog programs with negation

Abstract:A class of “modularly stratified” logic programs is defined. Modular stratification generalizes stratification and local stratification, while allowing programs that are not expressible as stratified programs. For modularly stratified programs, the well-founded semantics coincides with the stable model semantics and makes every ground literal true or false. Modularly stratified programs are weakly stratified, but the converse is false. Unlike some weakly stratified programs, modularly stratified programs can be evaluated in a subgoal-at-a time fashion. An extension of top-down methods with memoing that handles this broader class of programs is presented. A technique for rewriting a modularly stratified program for bottom-up evaluation is demonstrated and extended to include magic-set techniques. The rewritten program, when evaluated bottom-up, gives correct answers according to the well-founded semantics, but much more efficiently than computing the complete well-founded model. A one-to-one correspondence between steps of the extended top-down method and steps during the bottom-up evaluation of the magic-rewritten program is exhibited, demonstrating that the complexity of the two methods is the same. Extensions of modular stratification to other operators such as set-grouping and aggregation, which have traditionally been stratified to prevent semantic difficulties, are discussed.

Iconic Mathematics: Math Designed to Suit the Mind

Abstract:Mathematics is a struggle for many. To make it more accessible, behavioral and educational scientists are redesigning how it is taught. To a similar end, a few rogue mathematicians and computer scientists are doing something more radical: they are redesigning mathematics itself, improving its ergonomic features. Charles Peirce, an important contributor to ordinary symbolic logic, also introduced a rigorous but non-symbolic, graphical alternative to it that is easier to picture. In the spirit of this iconic logic, George Spencer-Brown founded iconic mathematics. Performing iconic arithmetic, algebra, and even trigonometry, resembles doing calculations on an abacus, which is still popular in education today, has aided humanity for millennia, helps even when it is merely imagined, and ameliorates severe disability in basic computation. Interestingly, whereas some intellectually disabled individuals excel in very complex numerical tasks, others of normal intelligence fail even in very simple ones. A comparison of their wider psychological profiles suggests that iconic mathematics ought to suit the very people traditional mathematics leaves behind.

Abstract:Loopholes offer an opening. Rather than comply or directly refuse, people can subvert an intended request by an intentional misunderstanding. Such behaviors exploit ambiguity and under-specification in language. Using loopholes is commonplace and intuitive in everyday social interaction, both familiar and consequential. Loopholes are also of concern in the law, and increasingly in artificial intelligence. However, the computational and cognitive underpinnings of loopholes are not well understood. Here, we propose a utility-theoretic recursive social reasoning model that formalizes and accounts for loophole behavior. The model captures the decision process of a loophole-aware listener, who trades off their own utility with that of the speaker, and considers an expected social penalty for non-cooperative behavior. The social penalty is computed through the listener's recursive reasoning about a virtual naive observer's inference of a naive listener's social intent. Our model captures qualitative patterns in previous data, and also generates new quantitative predictions consistent with novel studies (N=265). We consider the broader implications of our model for other aspects of social reasoning, including plausible deniability and humor.
