Abstract:I review aspects of the evolution of horizontal branch (HB) stars. I start by discussing current topics in the study of HB stellar evolution, including a brief review of the main determinants of the structure of low-mass core helium burning stars and of HB morphology. I describe the `first' and `second' parameter effects on HB morphology, and attempt to summarize the current state of affairs and how future investigations might improve our findings in this area. I also briefly discuss the topic that has generated the most theoretical attention over the last 5 years, that of the hot end of HB sequences. I then discuss the current state of HB theory, reviewing the effect of new physics on the models, and the special considerations (partial mixing) that arise in core helium burning models. Finally, I discuss two other outstanding issues. After noting that the mass loss mechanism is not at all understood, I review detailed work by several different groups concerning the age, abundance spread, and rotational properties of RGB and HB stars in the `second parameter' clusters M3 and M13. I conclude by discussing the HB luminosity-metallicity relation. The discrepancy between the slope of this relation from different lines of argument appears largely to have been resolved. However, the observational data and theoretical sequences (if Y ~ 0.23) are still in conflict as far as the HB luminosity zero-point is concerned.

Abstract:We investigate different methods used to construct (zero-age) horizontal branch models and compare the resulting horizontal branch evolution with that of models resulting from the calculation of the complete stellar evolution from the main sequence and through the core helium flash. We show that the approximate methods may lead to small but discernible effects, but that some methods, which are as simple, reproduce the complete evolution very well.

Striking Photospheric Abundance Anomalies in Blue Horizontal-Branch Stars in Globular Cluster M13

Abstract:High-resolution optical spectra of thirteen blue horizontal-branch (BHB) stars in the globular cluster M13 show enormous deviations in element abundances from the expected cluster metallicity. In the hotter stars (T_eff > 12000 K), helium is depleted by factors of 10 to 100 below solar, while iron is enhanced to three times the solar abundance, two orders of magnitude above the canonical metallicity [Fe/H] ~= -1.5 dex for this globular cluster. Nitrogen, phosphorus, and chromium exhibit even more pronounced enhancements, and other metals are also mildly overabundant, with the exception of magnesium, which stays very near the expected cluster metallicity. These photospheric anomalies are most likely due to diffusion --- gravitational settling of helium, and radiative levitation of the other elements --- in the stable radiative atmospheres of these hot stars. The effects of these mechanisms may have some impact on the photometric morphology of the cluster's horizontal branch and on estimates of its age and distance.

Abstract:The globular cluster omega Centauri contains the largest known population of very hot horizontal branch (HB) stars. We have used the Hubble Space Telescope to obtain a far-UV/optical color-magnitude diagram of three fields in omega Cen. We find that over 30% of the HB objects are ``extreme'' HB or hot post-HB stars. The hot HB stars are not concentrated toward the cluster center, which argues against a dynamical origin for them. A wide gap in the color distribution of the hot HB stars appears to correspond to gaps found earlier in several other clusters. This suggests a common mechanism, probably related to giant branch mass loss. The diagram contains a significant population of hot sub-HB stars, which we interpret as the ``blue-hook'' objects predicted by D'Cruz et al. (1996a). These are produced by late He-flashes in stars which have undergone unusually large giant branch mass loss. omega Cen has a well-known spread of metal abundance, and our observations are consistent with a giant branch mass loss efficiency which increases with metallicity.

Abstract:The horizontal branch (HB) morphology of globular clusters (GC) is mainly governed by metallicity. The second parameter problem, well known since the 60's, states that metallicity alone is not enough to describe the observed HB morphology of many GCs. Despite many efforts to resolve this issue, the second parameter phenomenon still remains without a satisfactory explanation. We have analyzed blue, red-HB, and RR-Lyrae stars in the GC M4 and studied their Fe, Na, and O abundances. Our goal is to investigate possible connections between the bimodal HB of M4 and the chemical signatures of the two stellar populations recently discovered among red giants of this cluster. We obtained FLAMES-UVES/GIRAFFE spectra of a sample of 22 stars covering the HB from the red to the blue region. While iron has the same abundance in both the red and blue-HB segment, the red-HB is composed of stars with scaled-solar sodium abundances, while the blue-HB stars are all sodium enhanced and oxygen depleted. The RR-Lyrae are Na-poor, as the red-HB stars, and O-rich. This is what we expect if the blue-HB consists of a second generation of stars formed from the ejecta produced by an earlier stellar population through high-temperature hydrogen-burning processes that include the CNO, NeNa, and MgAl cycles and are therefore expected to be He-rich. According to this scenario, the sodium and oxygen pattern detected in the blue and red-HB segments suggests helium as the second parameter that rules the HB morphology in M4.

Abstract:Stellar models for -2.5 <= [Fe/H] <= -0.5 that have been computed for variations in the C:N:O abundance ratio (for two different values of [CNO/Fe]) are compared with HST Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) observations of the globular clusters (GCs) 47 Tuc, NGC 6362, M5, M5, M55, and M92. The bolometric corrections used to transpose the models to the observed planes are based on new MARCS synthetic spectra that incorporate improved treatments of molecules that involve atoms of C, N, and O. On the assumption of well-supported distance moduli and reddenings, isochrones for [O/Fe] = 0.6 and [m/Fe] = 0.4 for the other alpha elements, which are favoured by binary stars in GCs, generally reproduce the main features of observed colour-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) to within ~ 0.03 mag. In particular, they appear to match the spreads in the observed (M_F336W - M_F438W)_0 colours that are spanned by CN-weak and CN-strong stars along the lower giant branch quite well, but not the bluest giants, which are suspected to be N-poor ([N/Fe] <~ -0.5). Both the absolute (M_F438W - M_F606W)_0 colours and the variations in these colours at a given M_F606W magnitude on the giant branch are difficult to explain unless the reddest stars are C-rich ([C/Fe] >~ +0.5). Allowing for moderate He abundance variations (delta Y ~ 0.05) improves the fits to the observations.

Abstract:Globular clusters are ideal laboratories to study the evolution of low-mass stars. In this work we concentrate on three types of hot stars observed in globular clusters: horizontal branch stars, UV bright stars, and white dwarfs. After providing some historical background and information on gaps and blue tails we discuss extensively hot horizontal branch stars in metal-poor globular clusters, esp. their abundance anomalies and the consequences for the determination of their atmospheric parameters and evolutionary status. Hot horizontal branch stars in metal-rich globular clusters are found to form a small, but rather inhomogeneous group that cannot be explained by one evolutionary scenario. Hot UV bright stars show a lack of classic post-AGB stars that may explain the lack of planetary nebulae in globular clusters. Finally we discuss first results of spectroscopic observations of white dwarfs in globular clusters.

Abstract:We leverage new high-quality data from Hubble Space Telescope program GO-14164 to explore the variation in horizontal branch morphology among globular clusters in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). Our new observations lead to photometry with a precision commensurate with that available for the Galactic globular cluster population. Our analysis indicates that, once metallicity is accounted for, clusters in the LMC largely share similar horizontal branch morphologies regardless of their location within the system. Furthermore, the LMC clusters possess, on average, slightly redder morphologies than most of the inner halo Galactic population; we find, instead, that their characteristics tend to be more similar to those exhibited by clusters in the outer Galactic halo. Our results are consistent with previous studies showing a correlation between horizontal branch morphology and age.

Mass Loss On the Horizontal Branch: an Application to NGC6791

Abstract:The presence of a substantial number of hot stars in the extremely metal-rich} open cluster NGC6791 has been a mystery. If these hot stars are in their core helium burning phase, they are significantly bluer (hotter) than predicted by canonical stellar evolution theory. No obvious explanation is available yet. We consider the effects of mass loss during the evolution of horizontal branch (HB) stars as their possible origin. We find that the addition of mass loss causes HB stars to evolve to be hotter and fainter. Mass loss has a more pronounced effect for less massive stars and thus naturally widens the temperature (and color) distribution on the HB. If mass loss rates are higher for more metal-rich stars, this phenomenon would be even more pronounced in the metal-rich populations, such as NGC6791. We find that mass loss on the HB may be a viable method of forming subdwarf B (sdB) stars both in the field and in clusters, especially when the metallicity is high.

Abstract:Theoretical predictions of Red Giant Branch stars' effective temperatures, colors, luminosities and surface chemical abundances are a necessary tool for the astrophysical interpretation of the visible--near infrared integrated light from unresolved stellar populations, the Color-Magnitude-Diagrams of resolved stellar clusters and galaxies, and spectroscopic determinations of red giant chemical abundances. On the other hand, the comparison with empirical constraints provides a stringent test for the accuracy of present generations of red giant models. We review the current status of red giant stars' modelling, discussing in detail the still existing uncertainties affecting the model input physics (e.g., electron conduction opacity, treatment of the superadiabatic convection), and the adequacy of the physical assumptions built into the model computations. We compare theory with several observational features of the Red Giant Branch in galactic globular clusters, such as the luminosity function bump, the luminosity of the Red Giant Branch tip and the envelope chemical abundance patterns, to show the level of agreement between current stellar models and empirical data concerning the stellar luminosities, star counts, and surface chemical abundances.

This allows to write a ``Dirac'' equation for the photon containing all the known properties of it. Abstract:ABSTRACT This paper presents the results of analysing the integrated light (IL) low-resolution spectra of globular clusters (GCs) in the M31 and Centaurus A groups of galaxies. The sample consists of eight very metal-poor GCs ($\rm [Fe/H]\le -2$ dex) with high signal-to-noise ratio spectra acquired with the telescopes: the 6-m SAO RAS (BTA), the Southern African Large (SALT), and the 6.5-m Magellan (MMT). We study the influence of contribution of the horizontal branch stars on the hydrogen Balmer line profiles in the IL spectra. By modelling the Balmer lines, as well as the metal lines in the observed spectra, we determine the optimum parameters of stellar evolution isochrones and, consequently, the parameters of the atmospheres of the cluster stars. For all the studied GCs, the parameters of horizontal branch stars set by the selected isochrones, the corresponding ages, and carbon abundances are presented for the first time. The abundances of several other elements (Mg, Ca, Ti, Cr, and Mn) were determined for five GCs for the first time. All the studied GCs have blue horizontal branches and are older than 10 Gyr. Their chemical abundances, with the exception of Mg and Mn, are in good agreement with the abundances of stars in the Galactic field. The reasons of low [Mg/Fe] and of high [Mn/Fe] are discussed. Study of the fundamental properties of stellar populations in old GCs facilitates a better understanding of the formation processes of their parent galaxies and nucleosynthesis in the early Universe.

Abstract:UV observations of some massive globular clusters uncovered a significant population of very hot stars below the hot end of the horizontal branch (HB), the so-called blue hook stars. This feature might be explained either as results of the late hot flasher scenario where stars experience the helium flash while on the white dwarf cooling curve or by the progeny of the helium-enriched sub-population recently postulated to exist in some clusters. Moderately high resolution spectra of stars at the hot end of the blue HB in omega Cen were analysed for atmospheric parameters and abundances using LTE and Non-LTE model atmospheres. In the temperature range 30,000K to 50,000K we find that 35% of our stars are helium-poor (log(n_He/n_H) < -2), 51% have solar helium abundance within a factor of 3 (-1.5 <= log(n_He/n_H) <= -0.5) and 14% are helium-rich (log(n_He/n_H)> -0.4). We also find carbon enrichment in step with helium enrichment, with a maximum carbon enrichment of 3% by mass. At least 14% of the hottest HB stars in omega Cen show helium abundances well above the highest predictions from the helium enrichment scenario (Y = 0.42 corresponding to log(n_He/n_H) ~ -0.74). In addition, the most helium-rich stars show strong carbon enrichment as predicted by the late hot flasher scenario. We conclude that the helium-rich HB stars in omega Cen cannot be explained solely by the helium-enrichment scenario invoked to explain the blue main sequence. (Abridged)
Hot-Am stars as intermediary objects to the HgMn and Am stars

Abstract:We describe the early results of an investigation into the spectral characteristics of the hottest Am stars (A0 - A2) in an attempt to link the HgMn and Am classes of chemical peculiarity. A limited sample of hot-Am stars was searched for the presence of lines from the very heavy elements platinum and mercury, as well as a search for lines from the rare-earth elements in HgMn stars. Our analysis of the strong optical platinum and mercury lines in the spectrum of the HgMn star HR 7775 has detected isotopic shifts that are different from those found at ultraviolet wavelengths and, in the case of mercury, vary with ionization stage.

Vertical stratification of iron in atmospheres of blue horizontal-branch stars

Abstract:The aim of this study is to search for observational evidence of vertical iron stratification in the atmosphere of fourteen blue horizontal-branch (BHB) stars. We have found from our numerical simulations that five BHB stars: B22, B186 in the globular cluster NGC 288, WF2-820, WF2-2692 in M13 and B203 in M15 show clear signatures of the vertical stratification of iron whose abundance increases toward the lower atmosphere. Two other BHB stars (B334 in M15 and B176 in M92) also show possible iron stratification in their atmosphere. A dependence of the slope of iron stratification on the effective temperature was also discovered. It is found that the vertical stratification of iron is strongest in BHB stars with Teff around 11,500K. The slope of iron abundance decreases as Teff increases and becomes negligible for the BHB stars with Teff= 14,000K. These results support the hypothesis regarding the efficiency of atomic diffusion in the stellar atmospheres of BHB stars with Teff > 11,500K.

Inclusion of Horizontal Branch stars in the derivation of star formation histories of dwarf galaxies: the Carina dSph

Abstract:We present a detailed analysis of the Horizontal Branch of the Carina Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxy by means of synthetic modelling techniques, taking consistently into account the star formation history and metallicity evolution as determined from main sequence and red giant branch spectroscopic observations. We found that a range of integrated red giant branch mass loss values of 0.1-0.14 M, increasing with metallicity, is able to reproduce the colour extension of the old Horizontal Branch. However, leaving the mass loss as the only free parameter is not enough to match the detailed morphology of Carina Horizontal Branch. We explored the role played by the star formation history on the discrepancies between synthetic and observed Horizontal Branches. We derived a toy bursty star formation history that reproduces the horizontal branch star counts, and also matches qualitatively the red giant and the turn off regions. This star formation history is made of a subset of age and [M/H] components of the star formation history based on turn off and red giants only, and entails four separate bursts of star formation of different strenghts, centred at 2, 5, 8.6 and 11.5 Gyr, with mean [M/H] decreasing from \sim -1.7 to \sim -2.2 for increasing ages, and a Gaussian spread of 0.1 dex. The comparison between the metallicity distribution function of our star formation history and the one measured from the infrared CaT feature using a CaT-[Fe/H] calibration shows a qualitative agreement, once taken into account the range of [Ca/Fe] abundances measured in a sample of Carina stars, that biases the derived [Fe/H] distribution toward too low values. In conclusion, we have shown how the information contained within the horizontal branch of Carina (and dwarf galaxies in general) can be extracted and interpreted to refine the star formation history derived from red giants and turn off stars only. Wide Field Near-Infrared Photometry of 12 Galactic Globular Clusters: Observations Versus Models on the Red Giant Branch

Abstract:We present wide field near-infrared photometry of 12 Galactic globular clusters, typically extending from the tip of the cluster red giant branch (RGB) to the main sequence turnoff. Using recent homogenous values of cluster distance, reddening and metallicity, the resulting photometry is directly compared to the predictions of several recent libraries of stellar evolutionary models. Of the sets of models investigated, Dartmouth and Victoria-Regina models best reproduce the observed RGB morphology, albeit with offsets in J-Ks color which vary in their significance in light of all sources of observational uncertainty. Therefore, we also present newly recalibrated relations between near-IR photometric indices describing the upper RGB versus cluster iron abundance as well as global metallicity. The influence of enhancements in alpha elements and helium are analyzed, finding that the former affect the morphology of the upper RGB in accord with model predictions. Meanwhile, the empirical relations we derive are in good agreement with previous results, and minor discrepancies can likely be attributed to differences in the assumed cluster distances and reddenings. In addition, we present measurements of the horizontal branch (HB) and RGB bump magnitudes, finding a non-negligible dependence of the near-IR HB magnitude on cluster metallicity. Lastly, we discuss the influence of assumed cluster distances, reddenings and metallicities on our results, finding that our empirical relations are generally insensitive to these factors to within their uncertainties.

Abstract:A catalog including a set of the most recent Color Magnitude Diagrams (CMDs) is presented for a sample of 61 Galactic Globular Clusters (GGCs). We used this data-base to perform an homogeneous systematic analysis of the evolved sequences (namely, Red Giant Branch (RGB), Horizontal Branch (HB) and Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB)). Based on this analysis, we present: (1) a new procedure to measure the level of the ZAHB (V_ZAHB) and an homogeneous set of distance moduli obtained adopting the HB as standard candle; (2) an independent estimate for RGB metallicity indicators and new calibrations of these parameters in terms of both spectroscopic ([Fe/H]_CG97) and global metallicity ([M/H], including also the alpha-elements enhancement). The set of equations presented can be used to simultaneously derive a photometric estimate of the metal abundance and the reddening from the morphology and the location of the RGB in the (V,B-V)-CMD. (3) the location of the RGB-Bump (in 47 GGCs) and the AGB-Bump (in 9 GGCs). The dependence of these features on the metallicity is discussed. We find that by using the latest theoretical models and the new metallicity scales the earlier discrepancy between theory and observations (~0.4 mag) completely disappears.

Pollution versus diffusion: Abundance patterns of blue horizontal branch stars in globular clusters NGC6388, NGC6397, and NGC6752

Abstract:Context: The metal-rich bulge globular cluster NGC6388 shows a blue horizontal branch (HB). Helium (He) enrichment, which is correlated with changes in other light elements, might explain this feature. The hot HB stars in the metal-poor globular clusters NGC6397 and NGC6752, instead, show high abundances of heavy elements caused by radiative levitation. Aims: I want to use the abundances of cool blue HB stars in NGC6388 to look for He-enrichment. To exclude effects of radiative levitation for NGC6388 and to investigate the abundance changes caused by radiative levitation, I analysed the blue HB stars in NGC6397 and NGC6752. Methods: I determined effective temperatures and surface gravities from UV-optical photometry and high-resolution spectra together with LTE model spectra. The results were used together with equivalent widths by the GALA program, to provide consistent atmospheric parameters and abundances. Results: For NGC6397 and NGC6752, only moderately hot HB stars were suitable for analysis with GALA. When including literature data, a large scatter is seen at the onset of radiative levitation, followed by increasing abundances up to about 13500 K (Si, Fe), then turning to a plateau (Si) and a forking (Fe) for higher temperatures. NGC6388-4113 shows variations in radial velocity, which may indicate binarity. The metal abundances of the remaining three blue HB stars are consistent with the products of hot hydrogen burning. The data were too noisy to determine He abundances directly. Conclusions: The presence of hot hydrogen burning products in the blue HB stars in NGC6388 could indicate He enrichment. The abundance variations with temperature in moderately hot HB stars in NGC6397 and NGC6752 suggest an influence of parameters beyond rotation and effective temperature.

Abstract:We present new results of a stability analysis of realistic models of post-extreme horizontal branch stars. We find that g-mode instabilities develop in some of these models as a result of a potent epsilon-mechanism associated with the presence of an active H-burning shell. The epsilon-process drives low order and low degree g-modes with typical periods in the range 40-125 s. The unstable models populate a broad instability strip covering the interval 76,000 K > ~ T_eff >~ 44,000 K, and are identified with low-mass DAO white dwarfs. They descend from stars that reach the zero-age "extended" horizontal branch with H-rich envelope masses M_env >~ 0.0010a solar masses. Our computations indicate that some DAO stars should show luminosity variations resulting from pulsational instabilities. We suggest looking for brightness variations in six particularly promising candidates.
