Abstract:In this paper we propose a translation-invariant scalar model on the Moyal space. We prove that this model does not suffer from the UV/IR mixing and we establish its renormalizability to all orders in perturbation theory.

Abstract:The translation invariant model in quantum field theory is considered by functional integrations. Ultraviolet renormalization of the translation invariant Nelson model with a fixed total momentum is proven by functional integrations. As a corollary it can be shown that the Nelson Hamiltonian with zero total momentum has a ground state for arbitrary values of coupling constants in two dimension. Furthermore the ultraviolet renormalization of the polaron model is also studied.
On the renormalization of massive vector field theory coupled to scalar in curved space-time

Abstract:We consider the renormalization of massive vector field interacting with charged scalar field in curved spacetime. Starting with the theory minimally coupled to external gravity and using the formulations with and without Stückelberg fields, we show that the longitudinal mode of vector field is completely decoupled and the remaining theory of transverse vector field is renormalizable by power counting. The formal arguments based on the covariance and power counting indicate that multiplicative renormalizability of the interacting theory may require introducing two non-minimal terms linear in Ricci tensor in the vector sector. Nevertheless, a more detailed analysis shows that these non-minimal terms violate the decoupling of the longitudinal mode and are prohibited. As a verification of general arguments, we derive the one-loop divergences in the minimal massive scalar QED, using Stückelberg procedure and the heat-kernel technique. The theory without non-minimal terms proves one-loop renormalizable and admits the renormalization group equations for all the running parameters in the scalar and vector sectors. One-loop beta functions do not depend on the gauge fixing and can be used to derive the effective potential.

Abstract:In this paper, we present the cosmological perturbation formalism for theories within the framework of affine gravity. These theories are distinguished by their connection, devoid of any metric. Our approach involves segregating perturbations into symmetric and antisymmetric components (related to torsion), each further decomposed into irreducible elements, namely scalars, pseudoscalars, vectors, pseudovectors, 2-tensors, and 3-tensors. Finally, we have fully addressed the gauge freedom in this context.

Abstract:The BMS (Bondi–van der Burg–Metzner–Sachs) symmetry arises as the asymptotic symmetry of flat spacetime at null infinity. In particular, the BMS algebra for three-dimensional flat spacetime ( BMS3 ) is generated by the super-rotation generators that form a Virasoro subalgebra with central charge cL , together with mutually commuting super-translation generators. The super-rotation and supertranslation generators have nontrivial commutation relations with another central charge cM . In this paper, we study a free scalar theory in two dimensions exhibiting BMS3 symmetry, which can also be understood as the ultrarelativistic limit of a free scalar CFT2 in the flipped representation. Upon canonical quantization on the highest weight vacuum, the central charges are found to be cL=2 and cM=0 . Because of the vanishing central charge cM=0 , the theory features novel properties: there exist primary states which form a multiplet, and the Hilbert space can be organized by an enlarged version of BMS modules dubbed the staggered modules. We further calculate correlation functions and the torus partition function, the latter of which is also shown explicitly to be modular invariant. Abstract:A scalar field theory with 4-derivative kinetic terms and 4-derivative cubic and quartic couplings is presented as a proxy for quantum quadratic gravity (QQG). The scalar theory is renormalizable and asymptotically free and the remaining key issue is unitarity, or more precisely positivity, just as it is in QQG. We have extended calculations for the optical theorem and for a differential cross section, both in the high energy limit, to show how positivity constrains the theory. The results also show how it is that differential cross sections can have good high energy behavior. Finally we use the scalar theory to extend the Stuckelberg theory of a massive U(1) gauge boson to a renormalizable theory of a self-interacting gauge boson.

Scalaron dynamics from UV to IR

Abstract:We consider a scenario where the scalaron of $f({\cal R})$ models is related to the volume modulus of string compactifications leaving only one scalar degree of freedom at low energy. The coefficient of the leading curvature squared contribution to the low energy effective action of gravity determines the mass of the scalaron. We impose that this mass is small enough to allow for the scalaron to drive Starobinski's inflation. After inflation, the renormalisation group evolution of the couplings of the $f({\cal R})$ theory, viewed as a scalar-tensor theory, provides the link with the Infra-Red regime. We consider a scenario where the corrections to the mass of the scalaron are large and reduce it below the electron mass in the Infra-Red, so that the scalaron plays a central role in the low energy dynamics of the Universe. In particular this leads to a connection between the scalaron mass and the measured vacuum energy provided its renormalisation group running at energies higher than the electron mass never drops below the present day value of the dark energy.

Parisi-Sourlas Supertranslation and Scale without Conformal symmetry

Abstract:Inspired by the possibility of emergent supersymmetry in critical random systems, we study a field theory model with a quartic potential of one superfield, possessing the Parisi-Sourlas supertranslation symmetry. Within perturbative $\epsilon$ expansion, we find nine non-trivial scale invariant renormalization group fixed points, but only one of them is conformal. We, however, believe scale invariance without conformal invariance cannot occur without a sophisticated mechanism because it predicts the existence of a non-conserved but non-renormalized vector operator called virial current, whose existence must be non-generic. We show that the virial current in this model is related to the supercurrent by supertranslation. The supertranslation Ward-Takahashi identity circumvents the genericity argument, explaining its non-renormalization property.

A New Non-Renormalization Theorem from UV/IR Mixing

Abstract:In this paper, we prove a new non-renormalization theorem which arises from UV/IR mixing. This theorem and its corollaries are relevant for all four-dimensional tachyon-free closed string theories which can be realized from higher-dimensional theories via geometric compactifications. As such, they therefore apply regardless of the presence or absence of spacetime supersymmetry and regardless of the gauge symmetries or matter content involved. This theorem resolves a hidden clash between modular invariance and the process of decompactification, and enables us to uncover a number of surprising phenomenological properties of these theories. Chief among these is the fact that certain physical quantities within such theories cannot exhibit logarithmic or power-law running and instead enter an effective fixed-point regime above the compactification scale. This cessation of running occurs as the result of the UV/IR mixing inherent in the theory. These effects apply not only for gauge couplings but also for the Higgs mass and other quantities of phenomenological interest, thereby eliminating the logarithmic and/or power-law running that might have otherwise appeared for such quantities. These results illustrate the power of UV/IR mixing to tame divergences -- even without supersymmetry -- and reinforce the notion that UV/IR mixing may play a vital role in resolving hierarchy problems without supersymmetry.

On the renormalization of non-polynomial field theories

Abstract:A class of scalar models with non-polynomial interaction, which naturally admits an analytical resummation of the series of tadpole diagrams is studied in perturbation theory. In particular, we focus on a model containing only one renormalizable coupling that appear as a multiplicative coefficient of the squared field. A renormalization group analysis of the Green functions of the model shows that these are only approximated solutions of the flow equations, with errors proportional to powers of the coupling, therefore smaller in the region of weak coupling. The final output of the perturbative analysis is that the renormalized model is non-interacting with finite mass and vanishing vertices or, in an effective theory limited by an ultraviolet cut-off, the vertices are suppressed by powers of the inverse cut-off. The relation with some non-polynomial interactions derived long ago, as solutions of the linearized functional renormalization group flow equations, is also discussed.

Ultraviolet Renormalisation of a Quantum Field Toy Model II

Abstract:We consider a class of toy models describing a fermion field coupled with a boson field. The model can be viewed as a Yukawa model but with scalar fermions. As in our first paper, the interaction kernels are assumed bounded in the fermionic momentum variable and decaying like $|q|^{-p}$ for large boson momenta $q$. With no restrictions on the coupling strength, we prove norm resolvent convergence to an ultraviolet renormalized Hamiltonian, when the ultraviolet cutoff is removed. We do this by subtracting a sufficiently large, but finite, number of recursively defined self-energy counter-terms, which may be interpreted as arising from a perturbation expansion of the ground state energy. The renormalization procedure requires a spatial cutoff and works in three dimensions provided $p>\frac12$, which is as close as one may expect to the physically natural exponent $p = \frac12$.

Abstract:The lattice Sommerfield model, describing a massive vector gauge field coupled to a light fermion in two dimensions, is an ideal candidate to verify perturbative conclusions. In contrast with continuum exact solutions, we prove that there is no infinite field renormalization, implying the reduction of the degree of the ultraviolet divergence, and that the anomalies are nonrenormalized. Such features are the counterpart of analog properties at the basis of the Standard Model perturbative renormalizability. Abstract:Non(anti)commutative gauge theories are supersymmetric Yang-Mills and matter system defined on a deformed superspace whose coordinates obey non(anti)commutative algebra. We prove that these theories in four dimensions with N=1/2 supersymmetry are renormalizable to all orders in perturbation theory. Our proof is based on operator analysis and symmetry arguments. In a case when the Grassman-even coordinates are commutative, deformation induced by non(anti)commutativity of the Grassman-odd coordinates contains operators of dimension-four or higher. Nevertheless, they do not lead to power divergences in a loop diagram because of absence of operators Hermitian-conjugate to them. In a case when the Grassman-even coordinates are noncommutative, the ultraviolet-infrared mixing makes the theory renormalizable by the planar diagrams, and the deformed operators are not renormalized at all. We also elucidate relation at quantum level between non(anti)commutative deformation and N=1/2 supersymmetry. We point out that the star product structure dictates a specific relation for renormalization among the deformed operators.
Non-Polynomial Interactions as a Path Towards a Non-Renormalizable UV-Completion

Abstract:We propose a new class of single-field scalar quantum field theories with non-polynomial interactions leading to a two-point Green's function that can be naturally continued beyond the naive cutoff scale. This provides a new prospect for self-completing theories in the UV-domain. In our approach, the formal power series for the scalar potential has a vanishing radius of convergence and is defined through Borel resummation. We discuss concrete examples, among others with a spectral function that vanishes at large momenta, potentially leading to an asymptotically free theory. Finally, we give an outlook on future research, with a view towards possible applications to inflation and gravity.

We also argue that the implementation of the theory does not necessarily require a deformation of the Lorentz symmetry, but only of the translation invariance.

Abstract:On the basis of the generalized invariant formulation, the invariant-related unitary transformation method is developed and used to study the evolution of a quantum scalar field in Robertson-Walker hat spacetime. We first solve the functional Schrodinger equation for a free scalar field and obtain the exact solutions, of which the 'ground-state' solution possesses isotropy and homogeneity automatically. We then investigate the way of extending the method to treat the case in which there is a high-order perturbative self-interaction.

Abstract:The decomposition of the space of continuous and translation invariant valuations into a sum of SO(n) irreducible subspaces is obtained. A reformulation of this result in terms of a Hadwiger type theorem for continuous translation invariant and SO(n)-equivariant tensor valuations is also given. As an application, symmetry properties of rigid motion invariant and homogeneous bivaluations are established and then used to prove new inequalities of Brunn-Minkowski type for convex body valued valuations.

Scalar field inflation driven by a modification of the Heisenberg algebra

Abstract:We study the modifications induced on scalar field inflation produced by considering a general modification of the Heisenberg algebra. We proceed by modifying the Poisson brackets on the classical theory whenever the corresponding quantum commutator is modified. We do not restrict ourselves to a specific form for such modification, instead we constrain the functions involved by the cosmological behaviour of interest. We present whenever possible the way in which inflation can be realized approximately via three slow roll Hubble parameters that depend on the standard slow roll parameters in a very different form than in the usual case and that can be less restrictive. Furthermore we find a general analytical solution describing an expanding universe with constant Hubble parameter that generalizes the standard cosmological constant case by restricting the form of the modification of the Heisenberg algebra. It is found that even if such modification can be neglected in some limit and the cosmological constant is set to zero in that limit, the exponential expansion is present when the modification is important. Thus an appropriate modification of the Heisenberg algebra is sufficient to produce an exponentially expanding universe without the need of any other source.

Abstract:This paper focuses on renormalizable cosmology based on the Gauss-Bonnet theory with torsion. Within the framework of renormalizable quantum field theory, we study the matter field containing the Gauss-Bonnet correction term. By modifying the gauge model, which includes a charged scalar field and two families of fermions, and introducing torsion and Gauss-Bonnet corrections, we analyze the field equations in the super-symmetric hybrid inflation model, investigate the properties of torsion in a flat universe, the characteristics of the energy-momentum tensor, and the sensitivity of the theoretical model to correction parameters. This study shows that the Gauss-Bonnet correction term can directly affect the Hubble constant through the Einstein equations, providing a new observational perspective. This paper proposes a cosmological model that can be adjusted according to different Gauss-Bonnet correction models, providing a theoretical reference for future observational verification of various Gauss-Bonnet models.
