Abstract:We present a family of non-additive quantum codes based on Goethals and Preparata codes with parameters ((2^m,2^{2^m-5m+1},8)). The dimension of these codes is eight times higher than the dimension of the best known additive quantum codes of equal length and minimum distance.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a systematic way based on the nonbinary graph state of constructing good nonbinary quantum codes, both additive and nonadditive, for systems with integer dimensions. With a computer search, which results in many interesting codes including some nonadditive codes meeting the Singleton bounds, we are able to construct explicitly four families of optimal codes, namely, [[6,2,3]](p), [[7,3,3]](p), [[8,2,4]](p), and [[8,4,3]](p) for any odd dimension p and a family of nonadditive codes ((5,p,3))(p) for arbitrary p>3. In the case of composite numbers as dimensions, we also construct a family of stabilizer codes ((6,2p(2),3))(2p) for odd p, whose coding subspace is not of a dimension that is a power of the dimension of the physical subsystem.

Abstract:We show how good quantum error-correcting codes can be constructed using generalized concatenation. The inner codes are quantum codes, the outer codes can be linear or nonlinear classical codes. Many new good codes are found, including both stabilizer codes as well as so-called nonadditive codes.

Asymptotically Good Quantum Codes with Transversal Non-Clifford Gates

Abstract:We construct quantum codes that support transversal $CCZ$ gates over qudits of arbitrary prime power dimension $q$ (including $q=2$) such that the code dimension and distance grow linearly in the block length. The only previously known construction with such linear dimension and distance required a growing alphabet size $q$ (Krishna & Tillich, 2019). Our codes imply protocols for magic state distillation with overhead exponent $\gamma=\log(n/k)/\log(d)\rightarrow 0$ as the block length $n\rightarrow\infty$, where $k$ and $d$ denote the code dimension and distance respectively. It was previously an open question to obtain such a protocol with a contant alphabet size $q$. We construct our codes by combining two modular components, namely, (i) a transformation from classical codes satisfying certain properties to quantum codes supporting transversal $CCZ$ gates, and (ii) a concatenation scheme for reducing the alphabet size of codes supporting transversal $CCZ$ gates. For this scheme we introduce a quantum analogue of multiplication-friendly codes, which provide a way to express multiplication over a field in terms of a subfield. We obtain our asymptotically good construction by instantiating (i) with algebraic-geometric codes, and applying a constant number of iterations of (ii). We also give an alternative construction with nearly asymptotically good parameters ($k,d=n/2^{O(\log^*n)}$) by instantiating (i) with Reed-Solomon codes and then performing a superconstant number of iterations of (ii).

Abstract:Quantum error correcting codes play the role of suppressing noise and decoherence in quantum systems by introducing redundancy. Some strategies can be used to improve the parameters of these codes. For example, entanglement can provide a way for quantum error correcting codes to achieve higher rates than the one obtained via the traditional stabilizer formalism. Such codes are called entanglement-assisted quantum (QUENTA) codes. In this paper, we use algebraic geometry codes to construct several families of QUENTA codes via the Euclidean and the Hermitian construction. Two of the families created have maximal entanglement and have quantum Singleton defect equal to zero or one. Comparing the other families with the codes with the respective quantum Gilbert-Varshamov bound, we show that our codes have a rate that surpasses that bound. At the end, asymptotically good towers of linear complementary dual codes are used to obtain asymptotically good families of maximal entanglement QUENTA codes. Furthermore, a simple comparison with the quantum Gilbert-Varshamov bound demonstrates that using our construction it is possible to create an asymptotically family of QUENTA codes that exceeds this bound.

Abstract:We apply Steane’s enlargement of the Calderbank–Shor– Steane (CSS) codes and additive codes over to concatenated algebraic-geometric codes to construct many good quantum codes with fewer restrictions on the parameters compared to some known quantum codes. Some of the quantum codes we have constructed are either optimal or have parameters as good as the best known codes, while some have parameters better than those obtained from other known constructions.

Abstract:We give a polynomial representation for additive cyclic codes over . This representation will be applied to uniquely present each additive cyclic code by at most two generator polynomials. We determine the generator polynomials of all different additive cyclic codes. A minimum distance lower bound for additive cyclic codes will also be provided using linear cyclic codes over . We classify all the symplectic self-dual, self-orthogonal, and nearly self-orthogonal additive cyclic codes over . Finally, we present ten record-breaking binary quantum codes after applying a quantum construction to self-orthogonal and nearly self-orthogonal additive cyclic codes over .

A family of permutationally invariant quantum codes

Abstract:We construct a new family of permutationally invariant codes that correct $t$ Pauli errors for any $t\ge 1$. We also show that codes in the new family correct quantum deletion errors as well as spontaneous decay errors. Our construction contains some of the previously known permutationally invariant quantum codes as particular cases, which also admit transversal gates. In many cases, the codes in the new family are shorter than the best previously known explicit permutationally invariant codes for Pauli errors and deletions. Furthermore, our new code family includes a new $((4,2,2))$ optimal single-deletion-correcting code. As a separate result, we generalize the conditions for permutationally invariant codes to correct $t$ Pauli errors from the previously known results for $t=1$ to any number of errors. For small $t$, these conditions can be used to construct new examples of codes by computer.

Quotient Space Quantum Codes

Abstract:Additive codes and some nonadditive codes use the single and multiple invariant subspaces of the stabilizer G, respectively, to construct quantum codes, so the selection of the invariant subspaces is a key problem. In this paper, I provide the necessary and sufficient conditions for this problem and, establish the quotient space codes to construct quantum codes. These new codes unify additive codes and codeword stabilized codes and can transmit classical codewords. Actually, I give an alternative approach to constructing union stabilizer codes, which is different from that of Markus Grassl and Martin Roetteler, and which is easier to deal with degenerate codes. I also present new bounds for quantum codes and provide a simple proof of the quantum Singleton bound. The quotient space approach provides a concise and clear mathematical framework for the study of quantum error-correcting codes.

Abstract:Recently, Lin and Pryadko presented the quantum two-block group algebra codes, a generalization of bicycle codes obtained from Cayley graphs of non-Abelian groups. We notice that their construction is naturally suitable to obtain a quantum equivalent of the well-known classical Margulis code. In this paper, we first present an alternative description of the two-block group algebra codes using the left-right Cayley complex; then, we show how to modify the construction of Margulis to get a two-block algebra code. Finally, we construct several quantum Margulis codes and evaluate their performance with numerical simulations.

Abstract:An important family of quantum codes is the quantum maximum-distance-separable (MDS) codes. In this paper, we construct some new classes of quantum MDS codes by generalized Reed-Solomon (GRS) codes and Hermitian construction. In addition, the length $n$ of most of the quantum MDS codes we constructed satisfies $n\equiv 0,1($mod$\,\frac{q\pm1}{2})$, which is different from previously known code lengths. At the same time, the quantum MDS codes we construct have large minimum distances that are greater than $q/2+1$.

Abstract:We introduce rainbow codes, a novel class of quantum error correcting codes generalising colour codes and pin codes. Rainbow codes can be defined on any $D$-dimensional simplicial complex that admits a valid $(D+1)$-colouring of its $0$-simplices. We study in detail the case where these simplicial complexes are derived from chain complexes obtained via the hypergraph product and, by reinterpreting these codes as collections of colour codes joined at domain walls, show that we can obtain code families with growing distance and number of encoded qubits as well as logical non-Clifford gates implemented by transversal application of $T$ and $T^†$. By combining these techniques with the quasi-hyperbolic colour codes of Zhu et al. (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2310.16982" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2310.16982">arXiv:2310.16982</a>) we obtain families of codes with transversal non-Clifford gates and parameters $[\![n,O(n),O(log(n))]\!]$ which allow the magic-state yield parameter $\gamma = \log_d(n/k)$ to be made arbitrarily small. In contrast to other recent constructions that achieve $\gamma \rightarrow 0$ our codes are natively defined on qubits, are LDPC, and have logical non-Clifford gates implementable by single-qubit (rather than entangling) physical operations, but are not asymptotically good.

Abstract:In this note, we present a construction of new nonbinary quantum codes with good parameters. These codes are obtained by applying the Calderbank-Shor-Steane (CSS) construction. In order to do this, we show the existence of (classical) cyclic codes whose defining set consists of only one cyclotomic coset containing at least two consecutive integers.

Abstract:Due to their fast decoding algorithms, quantum generalizations of low-density parity check, or LDPC, codes have been investigated as a solution to the problem of decoherence in fragile quantum states. However, the additional twisted inner product requirements of quantum stabilizer codes force four-cycles and eliminate the possibility of randomly generated quantum LDPC codes. Moreover, the classes of quantum LDPC codes discovered thus far generally have unknown or small minimum distance, or a fixed rate. This paper presents several new classes of quantum LDPC codes constructed from finite projective planes. These codes have rates that increase with the block length $n$ and minimum weights proportional to $n^{1/2}$.

In particular, this gives a general method to implement logical operations in suitable LDPC quantum codes using transversal gates and qubit permutations only. To demonstrate our approach, we specifically consider a [[30, 8, 3]] hyperbolic quantum code called Bring's code. Further, we show that by restricting the logical subspace of Bring's code to four qubits, we can obtain the Clifford group on that subspace.

Abstract:With respect to the transversal gate group (an invariant of quantum codes), we demonstrate that non-additive codes can outperform stabilizer codes. We do this by constructing spin codes that correspond to permutation-invariant multiqubit codes that can implement generalized phase gates transversally. Of particular note, we construct permutation-invariant quantum codes that implement a transversal $T$ gate using fewer qubits and with a better minimum distance than is possible with the best known stabilizer codes.

Quantum Codes on Graphs

Abstract:We consider some questions related to codes constructed using various graphs, in particular focusing on graphs which are not lattices in two or three dimensions. We begin by considering Floquet codes which can be constructed using ``emergent fermions". Here, we are considering codes that in some sense generalize the honeycomb code[1] to more general, non-planar graphs. We then consider a class of these codes that is related to (generalized) toric codes on $2$-complexes. For (generalized) toric codes on $2$-complexes, the following question arises: can the distance of these codes grow faster than square-root? We answer the question negatively, and remark on recent systolic inequalities[2]. We then turn to the case that of planar codes with vacancies, or ``dead qubits", and consider the statistical mechanics of decoding in this setting. Although we do not prove a threshold, our results should be asymptotically correct for low error probability and high degree decoding graphs (high degree taken before low error probability). In an appendix, we discuss a toy model of vacancies in planar quantum codes, giving a phenomenological discussion of how errors occur when ``super-stabilizers" are not measured, and in a separate appendix we discuss a relation between Floquet codes and chain maps.

Abstract:Quantum maximum-distance-separable (MDS for short) codes are an important class of quantum codes. In this paper, by using Hermitian self-orthogonal generalized Reed-Solomon (GRS for short) codes, we construct five new classes of $q$-ary quantum MDS codes with minimum distance larger than $q/2+1$. Furthermore, the parameters of our quantum MDS code cannot be obtained from the previous constructions.

Abstract:Quantum error correction suppresses noise in quantum systems to allow for high-precision computations. In this work, we introduce Multivariate Bicycle (MB) Quantum Low-Density Parity-Check (QLDPC) codes, via an extension of the framework developed by Bravyi et al. [Nature, 627, 778-782 (2024)] and particularly focus on Trivariate Bicycle (TB) codes. Unlike the weight-6 codes proposed in their study, we offer concrete examples of weight-4 and weight-5 TB-QLDPC codes which promise to be more amenable to near-term experimental setups. We show that our TB-QLDPC codes up to weight-6 have a bi-planar structure. Further, most of our new codes can also be arranged in a two-dimensional toric layout, and have substantially better encoding rates than comparable surface codes while offering similar error suppression capabilities. For example, we can encode 4 logical qubits with distance 5 into 30 physical qubits with weight-5 check measurements, while a surface code with these parameters requires 100 physical qubits. The high encoding rate and compact layout make our codes highly suitable candidates for near-term hardware implementations, paving the way for a realizable quantum error correction protocol.

Small Quantum Codes from Algebraic Extensions of Generalized Bicycle Codes

Abstract:Quantum error correction is rapidly seeing first experimental implementations, but there is a significant gap between asymptotically optimal error-correcting codes and codes that are experimentally feasible. Quantum LDPC codes range from the surface code, which has a vanishing encoding rate, to very promising codes with constant encoding rate and linear distance. In this work, motivated by current small-scale experimental quantum processing units, we devise small quantum codes that are inspired by a subset of quantum LDPC codes, known as generalized bicycle (GB) codes. We introduce a code construction based on algebraic manipulation of the parity-check matrix of GB codes, rather than manipulation of Tanner graphs. Our construction leads to families of quantum LDPC codes of small size, and we demonstrate numerically that their performance scales comparably to the performance of surface codes for similar sizes under a phenomenological noise model. The advantage of our code family is that they encode many logical qubits in one code, at the expense of non-local connectivity. We then explore three variants of the code construction focusing on reducing the long-range connectivity by bringing it closer to the current experimental capabilities of short-range connectivity devices.

Abstract:We construct a new explicit family of good quantum low-density parity-check codes which additionally have linear time decoders. Our codes are based on a three-term chain $(\mathbb{F}_2^{m\times m})^V \quad \xrightarrow{\delta^0}\quad (\mathbb{F}_2^{m})^{E} \quad\xrightarrow{\delta^1} \quad \mathbb{F}_2^F$ where $V$ ($X$-checks) are the vertices, $E$ (qubits) are the edges, and $F$ ($Z$-checks) are the squares of a left-right Cayley complex, and where the maps are defined based on a pair of constant-size random codes $C_A,C_B:\mathbb{F}_2^m\to\mathbb{F}_2^\Delta$ where $\Delta$ is the regularity of the underlying Cayley graphs. One of the main ingredients in the analysis is a proof of an essentially-optimal robustness property for the tensor product of two random codes.
