Abstract:In the pioneering work by R. A. Marcus, the solvation effect on electron transfer (ET) processes was investigated, giving rise to the celebrated nonadiabatic ET rate formula. In this work, on the basis of the thermodynamic solvation potentials analysis, we reexamine Marcus' formula with respect to the Rice-Ramsperger-Kassel-Marcus (RRKM) theory. Interestingly, the obtained RRKM analogue, which recovers the original Marcus' rate that is in a linear solvation scenario, is also applicable to the nonlinear solvation scenarios, where the multiple curve{crossing of solvation potentials exists. Parallelly, we revisit the corresponding Fermi's golden rule results, with some critical comments against the RRKM analogue proposed in this work. For illustration, we consider the quadratic solvation scenarios, on the basis of physically well-supported descriptors.

Abstract:The semi-classical and quantum theories of electron transfer (ET) are extensively used to understand and predict tunnelling ET reaction rates in condensed phase and build on the two-state Donor-Acceptor thermodynamic framework of Marcus theory. Previously, Marcus two-state model has been extended to a three-state model which assumes a harmonic dependence of donor (D), bridge (B), and acceptor (A) free energies on the reaction (e.g. solvent polarization) coordinate. Here, we examine the previously proposed three-state extended Marcus model (EMM) and generalize it to an (N+2)-state model for N bridge sites separating the D from the A. Using the EMM, an analytic expression for the electron tunnelling barrier is derived. The EMM model predicts that relative thermodynamics of the D-A states and B state reorganization energies can both influence the D-A electronic coupling. We discuss signatures of bridge state thermal fluctuations using the EMM on the driving force and distance dependence of ET rates which can be tested experimentally.

Abstract:Electron transfer organic reaction rates are considered employing the classic physical picture of Marcus wherein the heats of reaction are deposited as the energy of low frequency mechanical oscillations of reconfigured molecular positions. If such electron transfer chemical reaction events occur in the neighborhood of metallic plates, then electrodynamic interface fields must also be considered in addition to mechanical oscillations. Such electrodynamic interfacial electric fields in principle strongly effect the chemical reaction rates. The thermodynamic states of the metal are unchanged by the reaction which implies that metallic plates are purely catalytic chemical agents.

A semiclassical non-adiabatic theory for elementary chemical reactions

Abstract:Electron Transfer (ET) reactions are modeled by the dynamics of a quantum two-level system (representing the electronic state) coupled to a thermalized bath of classical harmonic oscillators (representing the nuclei degrees of freedom). Unlike for the standard Marcus theory, the complex amplitudes of the electronic state are chosen as reaction coordinates. Then, the dynamical equations at non vanishing temperature become those of an effective Hamiltonian submitted to damping terms and their associated Langevin random forces. The advantage of this new formalism is to extend the original theory by taking into account both ionic and covalent interactions. The standard theory is recovered only when covalent interactions are neglected. Increasing these covalent interactions from zero, the energy barrier predicted by the standard theory first depresses, next vanish (or almost vanish) and for stronger covalent interactions, covalent bond formation takes place of ET. In biochemistry, the standard Marcus theory often fails to explain the enzymatic reactions especially those with non Arrhenius behavior which are barrierless and also dissipate little heat. We claim that this improved theory should yield an interesting tool for understanding them.

Abstract:Statistical thermodynamics of small systems shows dramatic differences from normal systems. Parallel to the recently presented steady-state thermodynamic formalism for master equation and Fokker-Planck equation, we show that a ``thermodynamic'' theory can also be developed based on Tsallis' generalized entropy $S^{(q)}=\sum_{i=1}^N(p_i-p_i^q)/[q(q-1)]$ and Shiino's generalized free energy $F^{(q)}=[\sum_{i=1}^Np_i(p_i/\pi_i)^{q-1}-1]/[q(q-1)]$, where $\pi_i$ is the stationary distribution. $dF^{(q)}/dt=-f_d^{(q)}\le 0$ and it is zero iff the system is in its stationary state. $dS^{(q)}/dt-Q_{ex}^{(q)} = f_d^{(q)}$ where $Q_{ex}^{(q)}$ characterizes the heat exchange. For systems approaching equilibrium with detailed balance, $f_d^{(q)}$ is the product of Onsager's thermodynamic flux and force. However, it is discovered that the Onsager's force is non-local. This is a consequence of the particular transformation invariance for zero energy of Tsallis' statistics.

Extending non-adiabatic rate theory to strong electronic couplings in the Marcus inverted regime

Abstract:Electron transfer reactions play an essential role in many chemical and biological processes. Fermi's Golden rule, which assumes that the coupling between electronic states is small, has formed the foundation of electron transfer rate theory, however in short range electron/energy transfer reactions this coupling can become very large, and therefore Fermi's Golden Rule fails to make even qualitatively accurate rate predictions. In this paper I present a simple modified Golden Rule theory to describe electron transfer in the Marcus inverted regime at arbitrarily large electronic coupling strengths. The theory is based on an optimal global rotation of the diabatic states, which makes it compatible with existing methods for calculating Golden Rule rates that can account for nuclear quantum effects with anharmonic potentials. Furthermore the Optimal Golden Rule (OGR) theory can also combined with analytic theories for non-adiabatic rates, such as Marcus theory and Marcus-Levich-Jortner theory, offering clear physical insight into strong electronic coupling effects in non-adiabatic processes. OGR theory is also tested on a large set of spin-boson models and an anharmonic model against exact quantum dynamics calculations, where it performs well, correctly predicting rate turnover at large coupling strengths. Finally, an example application to a BODIPY-Anthracene photosensitizer reveals that strong coupling effects inhibit excited state charge recombination in this system, reducing the rate of this process by a factor of four. Overall OGR theory offers a new approach to calculating electron transfer rates at strong couplings, offering new physical insight into a range of non-adiabatic processes.

Abstract:The rate of electron transfer between a molecular species and a metal, each at a different local temperature, is examined theoretically through implementation of a bithermal (characterized by two temperatures) Marcus formalism. Expressions for the rate constant and the electronic contribution to a heat transfer mechanism which is induced by the temperature gradient between molecule and metal are constructed. The system of coupled dynamical equations describing the electronic and thermal currents are derived and examined over diverse ranges of reaction geometries and temperature gradients. It is shown that electron transfer across the molecule-metal interface is associated with heat transfer and that the electron exchange between metal and molecule makes a distinct contribution to the interfacial heat conduction even when the net electronic current vanishes.

Fundamental Flaw of Marcus Theory

Abstract:Marcus theory is a theory originally developed by Rudolph A. Marcus in 1956 based on Libby's idea about electron transfer mechanism according to the two-sphere model with the help of the continuous medium-theory and the electrostatic mechanics to describe the kinetics of the outer-sphere electron transfer reactions in solution, which states that the activation free energies of the outer-sphere electron transfer reactions have the quadratic relationship with the corresponding reaction free energy changes. Having been developed by Marcus and many other chemists for more than 50 years, Marcus theory has received extensive application in various fields. Meanwhile, the research object of Marcus theory has been extended from the outer-sphere electron transfer reactions to the inner-sphere electron transfer reactions, even more to the nucleus transfer reactions. Because the reaction coordinates of the transition state of the electron transfer reactions in Marcus inverted region go beyond the region between the initial state and the final state of the reactions in the same reaction coordinate system, which evidently does not obey the natural change logic, we have never accepted Marcus theory as a scientific theory, even though some experimental observations were reported by Miller and Closs as well as many other chemists to support Marcus inverted region. In order to dig out the origin of Marcus theory error, in this study we examined the following questions about the classical Marcus theory: (1) What are the prerequisites(or assumptions) of Marcus theory? (2) How do Marcus free energy parabolas for the reactant system and for the product system form? (3) What factors determine the feature of Marcus free energy parabolas? (4) How does the classical Marcus equation form? (5) What is the criterion of Marcus inverted region? After the examinations, the following conclusions can be made; (1) Marcus theory directly conflicts with the law of conservation of energy and has the error in principle; (2) Marcus inverted region is impossible; (3) the experimental observations for Marcus inverted region reported in the literatures are all spurious.

Confronting surface hopping molecular dynamics with Marcus theory for a molecular donor-acceptor system

Abstract:We investigate the performance of fewest switches surface hopping (SH) in describing electron transfer (ET) for a molecular donor-acceptor system. Computer simulations are carried out for a wide range of reorganisation energy (λ), electronic coupling strength (Hab) and driving force using our recently developed fragment orbital-based SH approach augmented with a simple decoherence correction. This methodology allows us to compute SH ET rates over more than four orders of magnitude, from the sub-picosecond to the nanosecond time regime. We find good agreement with semi-classical ET theory in the non-adiabatic ET regime. The correct scaling of the SH ET rate with electronic coupling strength is obtained and the Marcus inverted regime is reproduced, in line with previously reported results for a spin-boson model. Yet, we find that the SH ET rate falls below the semi-classical ET rate in the adiabatic regime, where the free energy barrier is in the order of kBT in our simulations. We explain this by first signatures of non-exponential population decay of the initial charge state. For even larger electronic couplings (Hab = λ/2), the free energy barrier vanishes and ET rates are no longer defined. At this point we observe a crossover from ET on the vibronic time scale to charge relaxation on the femtosecond time scale that is well described by thermally averaged Rabi oscillations. The extension of the analysis from the non-adiabatic limit to large electronic couplings and small or even vanishing activation barriers is relevant for our understanding of charge transport in organic semiconductors.
A Molecular Density Functional Theory Approach to Electron Transfer Reactions

Abstract:Beyond the dielectric continuum description initiated by Marcus theory, the nowadays standard theoretical approach to study electron transfer (ET) reactions in solution or at interfaces is to use classical force field or ab initio Molecular Dynamics simulations. We propose here an alternative method based on liquid-state theory, namely molecular density functional theory, which is numerically much more efficient than simulations while still retaining the molecular nature of the solvent. We begin by reformulating molecular ET theory in a density functional language and show how to compute the various observables characterizing ET reactions from an ensemble of density functional minimizations. In particular, we define in that formulation the relevant order parameter of the reaction, the so-called vertical energy gap, and determine the Marcus free energy curves of both reactant and product states along that coordinate. Important thermodynamic quantities such as the reaction free energy and the reorganization free energies follow. We assess the validity of the method by studying the model Cl$^0\rightarrow$ Cl$^+$ and Cl$^0\rightarrow$ Cl$^-$ ET reactions in bulk water for which molecular dynamics results are available. The anionic case is found to violate the standard Marcus theory. Finally, we take advantage of the computational efficiency of the method to study the influence of confinement on the ET, by investigating the evolution of the reorganization free energy of the Cl$^0\rightarrow$ Cl$^+$ reaction when the atom approaches an atomistically resolved wall.

Abstract:The stochastic integral ensuring the Newton-Leibnitz chain rule is essential in stochastic energetics. Marcus canonical integral has this property and can be understood as the Wong-Zakai type smoothing limit when the driving process is non-Gaussian. However, this important concept seems not well-known for physicists. In this paper, we discuss Marcus integral for non-Gaussian processes and its computation in the context of stochastic energetics. We give a comprehensive introduction to Marcus integral and compare three equivalent definitions in the literature. We introduce the exact pathwise simulation algorithm and give the error analysis. We show how to compute the thermodynamic quantities based on the pathwise simulation algorithm. We highlight the information hidden in the Marcus mapping, which plays the key role in determining thermodynamic quantities. We further propose the tau-leaping algorithm, which advance the process with deterministic time steps when tau-leaping condition is satisfied. The numerical experiments and its efficiency analysis show that it is very promising.
Generalised Marcus Theory for Multi-Molecular Delocalised Charge Transfer

Abstract:Although Marcus theory is widely used to describe charge transfer in molecular systems, in its usual form it is restricted to transfer from one molecule to another. If a charge is delocalised across multiple donor molecules, this approach requires us to treat the entire donor aggregate as a unified supermolecule, leading to potentially expensive quantum-chemical calculations and making it more difficult to understand how the aggregate components contribute to the overall transfer. Here, we show that it is possible to describe charge transfer between groups of molecules in terms of the properties of the constituent molecules and couplings between them, obviating the need for expensive supermolecular calculations. We use the resulting theory to show that charge delocalisation between molecules in either the donor or acceptor aggregates can enhance the rate of charge transfer through a process we call supertransfer (or suppress it through subtransfer). The rate can also be enhanced above what is possible with a single molecule by judiciously tuning energy levels and reorganisation energies. We also describe bridge-mediated charge transfer between delocalised molecular aggregates. The equations of generalised Marcus theory are in closed form, providing qualitative insight into the impact of delocalisation on charge dynamics in molecular systems.

Abstract:The Marcus theory of electron transfer (ET) predicts that while the ET rate constants increase with rising driving force until it equals a reaction's reorganization energy, at higher driving force the ET rate decreases, having reached the Marcus inverted region. While experimental evidence of the inverted region has been reported for organic and inorganic ET reactions as well as for proteins conjugated with ancillary redox moieties, evidence of the inverted region in a "protein-only" system has remained elusive. We herein provide such evidence in a series of nonderivatized proteins. These results may facilitate the design of ET centers for future applications such as advanced energy conversions.
Instanton formulation of Fermi's golden rule in the Marcus inverted regime

Abstract:Fermi's golden rule defines the transition rate between weakly coupled states and can thus be used to describe a multitude of molecular processes including electron-transfer reactions and light-matter interaction. However, it can only be calculated if the wave functions of all internal states are known, which is typically not the case in molecular systems. Marcus theory provides a closed-form expression for the rate constant, which is a classical limit of the golden rule, and indicates the existence of a normal regime and an inverted regime. Semiclassical instanton theory presents a more accurate approximation to the golden-rule rate including nuclear quantum effects such as tunnelling, which has so far been applicable to complex anharmonic systems in the normal regime only. In this paper we extend the instanton method to the inverted regime and study the properties of the periodic orbit, which describes the tunnelling mechanism via two imaginary-time trajectories, one of which now travels in negative imaginary time. It is known that tunnelling is particularly prevalent in the inverted regime, even at room temperature, and thus this method is expected to be useful in studying a wide range of molecular transitions occurring in this regime.

Abstract:We investigate non-equilibrium two-electron transfer in a model redox system represented by a two-site extended Hubbard model and embedded in a dissipative environment. The influence of the electron-electron interactions and the coupling to a dissipative bosonic bath on the electron transfer is studied in different temperature regimes. At high temperatures Marcus transfer rates are evaluated and at low temperatures, we calculate equilibrium and non-equilibrium population probabilities of the donor and acceptor with the non-perturbative Numerical Renormalization Group approach. We obtain the non-equilibrium dynamics of the system prepared in an initial state of two electrons at the donor site and identify conditions under which the electron transfer involves one concerted two-electron step or two sequential single-electron steps. The rates of the sequential transfer depend non-monotonically on the difference between the inter-site and on-site Coulomb interaction which become renormalized in the presence of the bosonic bath. If this difference is much larger than the hopping matrix element, the temperature as well as the reorganization energy, simultaneous transfer of both electrons between donor and acceptor can be observed.

Abstract:Marcus theory has been successfully applied to molecular design for organic semiconductors with the aid of quantum chemistry calculations for the molecular parameters: the intermolecular electronic coupling V and the intramolecular charge reorganization energy λ. The assumption behind this is the localized nature of the electronic state for representing the charge carriers, being holes or electrons. As far as the quantitative description of carrier mobility is concerned, the direct application of Marcus semiclassical theory usually led to underestimation of the experimental data. A number of effects going beyond such a semiclassical description will be introduced here, including the quantum nuclear effect, dynamic disorder, and delocalization effects. The recently developed quantum dynamics simulation at the time-dependent density matrix renormalization group theory is briefly discussed. The latter was shown to be a quickly emerging efficient quantum dynamics method for the complex system.

Abstract:A nonperturbative electron transfer rate theory is developed based on the reduced density matrix dynamics, which can be evaluated readily for the Debye solvent model without further approximation. Not only does it recover for reaction rates the celebrated Marcus' inversion and Kramers' turnover behaviors, the present theory also predicts for reaction thermodynamics, such as equilibrium Gibbs free-energy and entropy, some interesting solvent-dependent features that are calling for experimental verification. Moreover, a continued fraction Green's function formalism is also constructed, which can be used together with Dyson equation technique, for efficient evaluation of nonperturbative reduced density matrix dynamics.

Abstract:Electron transfer reactions at semiconductor/liquid interfaces are studied using the Fermi Golden rule and a free electron model for the semiconductor and the redox molecule. Bardeen’s method is adapted to calculate the coupling matrix element between the molecular and semiconductor electronic states where the effective electron mass in the semiconductor need not equal the actual electron mass. The calculated maximum electron transfer rate constants are compared with the experimental results as well as with the theoretical results obtained in Part I using tight-binding calculations. The results, which are analytic for an s-electron in the redox agent and reduced to a quadrature for pz- and dz2-electrons, add to the insight of the earlier calculations.

Abstract:In the present work we theoretically analyze thermoelectric transport in single-molecule junctions (SMJ) characterized by strong interactions between electrons on the molecular linkers and phonons in their nuclear environments where electron hopping between the electrodes and the molecular bridge states predominates in the steady state electron transport. The analysis is based on the modified Marcus theory accounting for the lifetime broadening of the bridge's energy levels. We show that the reorganization processes in the environment accompanying electron transport may significantly affect SMJ thermoelectric properties both within and beyond linear transport regime. Specifically, we study the effect of environmental phonons on the electron conductance, the thermopower and charge current induced by the temperature gradient applied across the system.
