Abstract:This editorial reflects on the emergence of artificial intelligence and how it is applied in the field of health. AI is a technology that mimics the functioning of the human brain and uses algorithms, machine learning, pattern recognition and cognitive computing to process large amounts of data and extract useful insights. AI can improve health and well-being of people in various areas of medicine, such as medical image analysis, diagnosis, treatment, genetics, pregnancy and smart prosthetics. These applications can help medical professionals make better clinical decisions, accelerate research and development of new drugs, personalize patient care and reduce costs and human errors. AI can also empower users to access relevant information about their health and actively participate in their care. However, AI also poses ethical, legal and social challenges that must be addressed with responsibility and transparency.

Abstract:Artificial intelligence (AI) and synthetic biology will transform civilization. The only question is how. In this paper, I explore some recent developments in medical AI, genomics, and synthetic biology. I speculate about the implications of these technologies for the practice of medicine and conclude that they will fundamentally alter our ideas of health, disease, medicine, and what it means to be human. I have three conclusions. First, AI and synthetic biology will force us to examine whether humanistic skills can be uniquely human and, if so, whether they are skills or natural gifts. AI will offer opportunities to examine what we mean by empathy, how we develop skills in communication, and when the human touch is essential for healing. Second, these technologies will change the ways that we will assess the value of doctors' work. Skills that can be mechanized will be devalued and delegated to machines. Doctors will either need to learn new skills or become irrelevant. Finally, AI and synthetic biology will force us to deeply examine what it means to be human. For humans to remain uniquely valuable, we will need to develop those aspects of our humanity that cannot be mechanized. Doctors will need to carefully attune themselves to the non-physical aspects of disease and suffering. Ultimately, AI and synthetic biology will force us to redesign both or systems of medical education and the systems of health care delivery in ways that meet both the medical and non-medical needs of patients.

Abstract:Artificial intelligence (AI) is poised to broadly reshape medicine, potentially improving the experiences of both clinicians and patients. We discuss key findings from a 2-year weekly effort to track and share key developments in medical AI. We cover prospective studies and advances in medical image analysis, which have reduced the gap between research and deployment. We also address several promising avenues for novel medical AI research, including non-image data sources, unconventional problem formulations and human–AI collaboration. Finally, we consider serious technical and ethical challenges in issues spanning from data scarcity to racial bias. As these challenges are addressed, AI’s potential may be realized, making healthcare more accurate, efficient and accessible for patients worldwide.

Abstract:Artificial intelligence-powered medical technologies are rapidly evolving into applicable solutions for clinical practice. Deep learning algorithms can deal with increasing amounts of data provided by wearables, smartphones, and other mobile monitoring sensors in different areas of medicine. Currently, only very specific settings in clinical practice benefit from the application of artificial intelligence, such as the detection of atrial fibrillation, epilepsy seizures, and hypoglycemia, or the diagnosis of disease based on histopathological examination or medical imaging. The implementation of augmented medicine is long-awaited by patients because it allows for a greater autonomy and a more personalized treatment, however, it is met with resistance from physicians which were not prepared for such an evolution of clinical practice. This phenomenon also creates the need to validate these modern tools with traditional clinical trials, debate the educational upgrade of the medical curriculum in light of digital medicine as well as ethical consideration of the ongoing connected monitoring. The aim of this paper is to discuss recent scientific literature and provide a perspective on the benefits, future opportunities and risks of established artificial intelligence applications in clinical practice on physicians, healthcare institutions, medical education, and bioethics.

Abstract:Biomedical information doubles almost every 2 months, and this very rate is expected to double by 2025. The result is information overload for clinicians and researchers. Today, artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) research contribute to the deluge of information. In addition, AI large language models, although capable of automating scientific writing, are flawed. They hallucinate (make things up), are trained primarily on non-peer-reviewed content, raise ethical and legal issues, and lack human empathy. Still, when it comes to AI including ML, we are optimistic. The technology is improving rapidly. In the future, AI will help us manage unwieldy information by processing data, determining diagnoses, recommending treatments, and predicting outcomes. In research, AI and ML similarly promise efficient data analysis and literature review and will create new content in response to our instructions. Human touch will be required, and we will disclose use of AI proactively, including rationale for its use, our data input, our level of confidence in the output, and the patients or populations to whom the output may be applied. In addition, we will ensure data quality is high and bias is minimized. Most of all, we will provide essential reasoning, clinical and research guidance, and diligent oversight. Humans will remain accountable.

Abstract:Will Artificial Intelligence (AI) re-humanize or de-humanize medicine? As AI becomes pervasive in clinical medicine, we argue that the ethical framework that sustains a responsible implementation of such technologies should be reconsidered. The emergence of AI in the clinical setting will challenge our traditional moral boundaries surrounding discussions of patient care since it is unclear how the implementation of AI will promote and enhance the humanistic dimensions of medical practice. There are reasons for concern regarding 1) the anthropological implications of AI in the clinical context; 2) the method(s) and framework(s) used to address ethical issues in medicine; and 3) the impact of AI on clinical practice, particularly in the nature of clinical judgment. These three concerns are examined in hopes of providing pointers for subsequent and more in-depth discussions regarding clinical practice but the training of future health professionals.

You can register here Background/aim: Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the capability of computational systems to perform tasks that require human-like cognitive functions, such as reasoning, learning, and decision-making. Unlike human intelligence, AI does not involve sentience or consciousness but focuses on data processing, pattern recognition, and prediction through algorithms and learned experiences. In healthcare including neuroscience, AI is valuable for improving prevention, diagnosis, prognosis, and surveillance. Methods: This qualitative study aimed to investigate the acceptability of AI in Medicine (AIIM) and to elucidate any technical and scientific, as well as social and ethical issues involved. Twenty-five doctors from various specialties were carefully interviewed regarding their views, experience, knowledge, and attitude towards AI in healthcare. Results: Content analysis confirmed the key ethical principles involved: confidentiality, beneficence, and non-maleficence. Honesty was the least invoked principle. A thematic analysis established four salient topic areas, i.e. advantages, risks, restrictions, and precautions. Alongside the advantages, there were many limitations and risks. The study revealed a perceived need for precautions to be embedded in healthcare policies to counter the risks discussed. These precautions need to be multi-dimensional. Conclusions: The authors conclude that AI should be rationally guided, function transparently, and produce impartial results. It should assist human healthcare professionals collaboratively. This kind of AI will permit fairer, more innovative healthcare which benefits patients and society whilst preserving human dignity. It can foster accuracy and precision in medical practice and reduce the workload by assisting physicians during clinical tasks. AIIM that functions transparently and respects the public interest can be an inspiring scientific innovation for humanity.

Through the introduction of innovative instruments such as virtual assistant chatbots, wearable monitoring devices, predictive analytic models, personalized treatment regimens, and automated appointment systems, AI is not only amplifying the quality of care but also empowering patients and fostering a more interactive dynamic between the patient and the healthcare provider. Yet, this progressive infiltration of AI into the healthcare sphere grapples with a plethora of challenges hitherto unseen. Abstract:Humans' creativity led to machines that outperform human capabilities in terms of workload, effectiveness, precision, endurance, strength, and repetitiveness. It has always been a vision and a way to transcend the existence and to give more sense to life, which is precious. The common denominator of all these creations was that they were meant to replace, enhance or go beyond the mechanical capabilities of the human body. The story takes another bifurcation when Alan Turing introduced the concept of a machine that could think, in 1950. Artificial intelligence, presented as a term in 1956, describes the use of computers to imitate intelligence and critical thinking comparable to humans. However, the revolution began in 1943, when artificial neural networks was an attempt to exploit the architecture of the human brain to perform tasks that conventional algorithms had little success with. Artificial intelligence is becoming a research focus and a tool of strategic value. The same observations apply in the field of healthcare, too. In this manuscript, we try to address key questions regarding artificial intelligence in medicine, such as what artificial intelligence is and how it works, what is its value in terms of application in medicine, and what are the prospects?

Abstract:Internal medicine physicians are increasingly interacting with systems that implement artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) technologies. Some physicians and health care systems are even developing their own AI models, both within and outside of electronic health record (EHR) systems. These technologies have various applications throughout the provision of health care, such as clinical documentation, diagnostic image processing, and clinical decision support. With the growing availability of vast amounts of patient data and unprecedented levels of clinician burnout, the proliferation of these technologies is cautiously welcomed by some physicians. Others think it presents challenges to the patient-physician relationship and the professional integrity of physicians. These dispositions are understandable, given the "black box" nature of some AI models, for which specifications and development methods can be closely guarded or proprietary, along with the relative lagging or absence of appropriate regulatory scrutiny and validation. This American College of Physicians (ACP) position paper describes the College's foundational positions and recommendations regarding the use of AI- and ML-enabled tools and systems in the provision of health care. Many of the College's positions and recommendations, such as those related to patient-centeredness, privacy, and transparency, are founded on principles in the ACP Ethics Manual. They are also derived from considerations for the clinical safety and effectiveness of the tools as well as their potential consequences regarding health disparities. The College calls for more research on the clinical and ethical implications of these technologies and their effects on patient health and well-being.

Abstract:Artificial Intelligence (AI), since its inception, has revolutionized multiple sectors, including healthcare in the 20th century, and has applications in data interpretation, leading to advancements in diagnostics, therapeutics, and clinical decision-making. AI is referred to as the capability of a software program to accurately analyze extrinsic information and utilize it for accomplishing desired goals and objectives through appropriate flexibility. It makes use of complicated operative algorithms to excel in human learning potential with overwhelming abilities to interpret large sets of data. The scope and implications of AI are consistently amplifying and have contributed significantly in nearly all phases of human life, especially healthcare. The integration of AI-related advancements would surely ameliorate the delivery of healthcare by allowing its accessibility, affordability, and level of care provided. For instance, reading CT scans is feasible by both AI as well as a radiologist. The screening of Tuberculosis is possible through AI via Chest X-rays with comparability in performance as molecular testing and mammography scans can predict the onset of breast cancer prior to the appearance of the ocular signs. Therefore, AI has been realized as one of the core areas by researchers and the government for public health benefit. For the same reason, it is imperative to adopt an ethically sound policy framework for guiding the further development of AI-based technologies and their application in public health. AI-based interpretations themselves cannot be fully trusted for their diagnostic decisions and judgements, and hence, it is vital to assess their accountability through all phases of development and deployment in the field of health. This article emphasizes the advancements in AI-based technologies, their assistance in public healthcare delivery systems, and their merits and demerits. Abstract:Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly being developed for use in medicine, including for diagnosis and in treatment decision making. The use of AI in medical treatment raises many ethical issues that are yet to be explored in depth by bioethicists. In this paper, I focus specifically on the relationship between the ethical ideal of shared decision making and AI systems that generate treatment recommendations, using the example of IBM’s Watson for Oncology. I argue that use of this type of system creates both important risks and significant opportunities for promoting shared decision making. If value judgements are fixed and covert in AI systems, then we risk a shift back to more paternalistic medical care. However, if designed and used in an ethically informed way, AI could offer a potentially powerful way of supporting shared decision making. It could be used to incorporate explicit value reflection, promoting patient autonomy. In the context of medical treatment, we need value-flexible AI that can both respond to the values and treatment goals of individual patients and support clinicians to engage in shared decision making.

Abstract:Artificial intelligence has been widely applied in the medical field recently, such as medical imaging, pathological diagnosis, mental health, rehabilitation medicine, and home health support have progressed, which also triggered extensive ethical thinking. Under the perspective of medical ethics, this paper explores the controversial status of moral subjects of AI machines, the definition of multiple relationships arising from machine use, value judgments and trust considerations of AI technologies, data accessibility and privacy protection. It further points out the potential injustice, discrimination and risk liability arising from AI, and calls for the establishment of an ethical review and collaborative governance mechanism for AI that is deeply integrated with technology.

Abstract:The use of artificial intelligence (AI) in medicine is beginning to alter current procedures in prevention, diagnosis, treatment, amelioration, cure of disease and other physical and mental impairments. In addition to raising concerns about public trust and ethics, advancements in this new emerging technology have also led to a lot of debate around its integration into healthcare. This article discusses AI in terms of the medical ethics issues involved, both existing and potential.</p><p>Once artificial intelligence is fully developed within electronic systems, it will afford many useful applications in many sectors ranging from banking, agriculture, medical procedures to military operations, especially by decreasing the involvement of humans in critically dangerous activities.</p><p>Robots as well as computers themselves are embodiments of values inasmuch as they entail actions and choices, but their practical applications are modelled or programmed by the engineers building the systems. AI will need algorithmic procedures to ensure safety in the implementation of such systems. The AI algorithms written could naturally contain errors that may result in unforeseen consequences and unfair outcomes along economic and racial class lines.</p><p>It is crucial that measures be taken to monitor technological developments ensuring preventative and precautionary safeguards are in place to safeguard the rights of those involved against direct or indirect coercion. Abstract:Artificial intelligence (AI) is a multidisciplinary field intersecting computer science, cognitive science, and other disciplines, able to address the creation of systems that perform tasks generally requiring human intelligence. It consists of algorithms and computational methods that allow machines to learn from data, make decisions, and perform complex tasks, aiming to develop an intelligent system that can work independently or collaboratively with humans. Since AI technologies may help physicians in life-threatening disease prevention and diagnosis and make treatment smart and more targeted, they are spreading in health services. Indeed, humans and machines have unique strengths and weaknesses and can complement each other in providing and optimizing healthcare. However, the healthcare implementation of these technologies is related to emerging ethical and deontological issues regarding the fearsome reduction of doctors' decision-making autonomy and acting discretion, generally strongly conditioned by cognitive elements concerning the specific clinical case. Moreover, this new operational dimension also modifies the usual allocation system of responsibilities in case of adverse events due to healthcare malpractice, thus probably imposing a redefinition of the established medico-legal assessment criteria of medical professional liability. This article outlines the new challenges arising from AI healthcare integration and the possible ways to overcome them, with a focus on Italian legal framework. In this evolving and transitional context emerges the need to balance the human dimension with the artificial one, without mutual exclusion, for a new concept of medicine "with" machines and not "of" machines.
