Abstract:This paper deals with the problems of both project valuation and portfolio selection under the assumption that the investment capitals and the net cash flows of the projects are fuzzy variables. Using the credibilistic expected value and the credibilistic lower semivariance of fuzzy variables, this paper proposes both the credibilistic return index and the credibilistic risk index, which are measures of investment return and investment risk with annuity form for evaluating single project. Moreover, a composite risk-return index for selecting the optimal investment strategy is also presented. Then, we set up a general project portfolio optimization model with fuzzy returns and two specific models: triangle and interval fuzzy returns. Furthermore, we provide two algorithms: the improved heuristic rules based on genetic algorithm and the traversal algorithm. Finally, two numerical examples are presented to illustrate the efficiency and the effectiveness of these proposed optimization methods.

Abstract:The article deals with current issues of finance and investment planning with a selective focus on financial decision-making processes using sophisticated software tools. The article has a special significance in this period when it is necessary to re-evaluate and consider ways of appropriate and effective investment and financial policy in view of the restrictions in enterprises in Slovakia, which brings with it the global pandemic COVID-19 or another crisis in enterprises. The aim of the article is to propose a methodology as a tool for streamlining the investment activities of companies. The proposed methodology combines the usability of traditional and modern economic methods, making it an important tool for the sustainability and competitiveness of enterprises. Three variants of investment decisions in the enterprise were simulated using simulation in terms of two approaches. The first approach focuses on mathematical–economic calculations of deterministic modeling through traditional software tools. The second stochastic modeling uses the simulation of financial risks using a modern software tool using the Monte Carlo method. The output is the creation of a graphical management model in the form of an algorithm.

Abstract:In the electricity market, the market can bring not only expected income for participants, but also enormous financial risk. So evaluation on financial risk is of great importance. In order to solve the relativity problem of forecast load and electricity price, the relation between forecast load and electricity price combined with Monte-Carlo method is used in modeling. Based on the data of Zhejiang electricity market, the analysis results show that the model is feasible. Furthermore, the model is valuable in predicting and controlling financial risk of electricity market.

Abstract:The fundamental principles of financial risk assessment are discussed, with primary emphasis on using simulation to evaluate and compare alternative investments. First we introduce the key measures of performance for such investments, including net present value, internal rate of return, and modified internal rate of return. Next we discuss types of risk and the key measures of risk, including expected present value; the mean, standard deviation, and coefficient of variation of the rate of return; and the risk premium. Finally we detail the following applications: (i) stand-alone risk assessment for a capital-budgeting problem; (ii) comparison of risk-free and risky investment strategies designed merely to keep up with the cost of living; (iii) value-at-risk (VAR) analysis for a single-stock investment; (iv) VAR analyses for two-asset portfolios consisting of stock and either call or put options; and (v) VAR analyses for two-asset portfolios consisting of both puts and calls.

Abstract:An environment of turbulence in the market in recent years and increasing inflation, mainly as a result of the post-COVID period and the ongoing military operation in Ukraine, represents a significant financial risk factor for many companies, which has a negative impact on managerial decisions. A lot of enterprises are forced to look for ways to effectively assess the riskiness of the projects that they would like to implement in the future. The aim of the article is to present a new approach for companies with which to assess the riskiness of projects. The basis of this is the use of the new Crystal Ball software tool and the effective application of the Monte Carlo method. The article deals with the current issues of investment and financial planning, which are the basic pillars for effective management decisions with the goal of sustainability. The article has verified a methodology that allows companies to make effective investment decisions based on assessing the level of risk. For practical application, the Monte Carlo method was chosen, as it uses sensitivity analysis and simulations, which were evaluated for two types of projects. Both simulations were primarily carried out based on a deterministic approach through traditional mathematical models. Subsequently, stochastic modeling was performed using the Crystal Ball software tool. As a result of the sensitivity analysis, two tornado graphs were created, which display risk factors according to the degree of their influence on the criterion value. The output of this article is the presentation of these new approaches for financial decision-making within companies.

Abstract:The Monte Carlo method, thanks to its flexibility in designing even extremely complex payoffs, is assuming an increasingly important role in quantitative analysis. Its main limitation is the high computational cost linked to its modest speed of convergence to the fair value of the product. One of the best-known statistical techniques is to replace the random number generator with “low discrepancy” deterministic numerical sequences, producing a Quasi-Monte Carlo. Through its implementation for the analysis of three investment certificates featuring different characteristics and different stochastic processes used for the underlying simulation, the study demonstrates the possibility of achieving interesting results in terms of performance even for pricing these structured products ever more popular in the financial industry.
Risk analysis of energy efficiency investments in buildings using the Monte Carlo method

Abstract:Demonstrating the economic rationality of investments in energy efficiency is a necessary step in reducing the energy consumption of buildings. Generally, financial instruments are evaluated according to both the return on investment and the risk. However, many previous studies of energy efficiency investments in buildings are based on deterministic scenarios and do not evaluate the risk levels of these investments. Therefore, in this study, we clarify the risk involved in an energy-saving investment by calculating the probability distribution of the energy reduction and evaluating the result using financial engineering methods. We first develop a stochastic model of various conditions that affect the energy consumption of a building. These conditions include weather processes, office worker behavior, tenant characteristics, and tenant replacements. Next, we construct a prediction model of a building's energy consumption, and we use our stochastic model to create the boundary conditions of this prediction model. By repeatedly performing energy consumption predictions using the Monte Carlo method, we can obtain the probability distribution for building energy consumption. Finally, given this probability distribution, we evaluate energy efficiency investments using financial engineering methods. Based on the discounted cash flow distribution, we calculate the risk premium of each energy efficiency investment, and, based on the variance and covariance matrix of the internal rate of return of each energy efficiency investment, we find the optimal investment ratio.

Abstract:This paper examines the creation of investment portfolios through convex optimization, multifactor models, and the multi-armed bandit (MAB) algorithms, focusing on the KL-UCB strategy to optimize decisions in uncertain settings. It explores the impact of systematic risk factors using the Fama-French three-factor model, estimating the influence of market, size, and value premiums via linear regression. The use of Monte Carlo simulation is detailed for generating potential asset allocations and calculating their expected returns, volatility, and Sharpe ratios. The optimize minimize function from the SciPy library is employed to construct an efficient frontier and determine optimal asset allocation, aiming to maximize returns or minimize volatility across various risk levels. The findings suggest that the strategy of dynamic weight adjustments combined with the KL-UCB algorithm enhances portfolio returns, particularly during market volatility. The research also reveals a portfolio inclination towards large-cap growth stocks due to the negative impacts of size and value premiums. It concludes that dynamic weight adjustment strategies offer significant potential in optimizing portfolio performance in complex market conditions, though leveraging increases risk and should be carefully managed according to investor risk tolerance.

Abstract:The assessment of investment risk for the countries along the route in Belt and Road (B&R) can be deemed as a multiple criteria group decision making (MCGDM) issue since multiple investment options based on diverse criterions are assessment by experts. Pondering that the complexity and uncertainty of the assessment setting and the cognition fuzziness and psychological behavior of experts bring challenges to risk assessment, this paper designed an integrated MCGDM risk investment evaluation framework by synthesizing MABAC method and prospect theory under Fermatean fuzzy setting. Firstly, a Fermatean fuzzy interactive distance measure is presented to ascertain the weight of evaluation experts and criterions. Next, some Fermatean fuzzy Frank aggregation operators based upon the proposed Frank operations are developed to fuse Fermatean fuzzy information efficiently. In addition, an innovative evaluation framework for risk investment is designed based on improved prospect theory MABAC and CRITIC approaches. Conclusively, an empirical concerning risk investment issues in B&R is employed to confirm the applicability and feasibility of the constructed evaluation framework, involving the simulation experiments on sensitivity analysis and contrast studies. The assessment information provided by investors using the linguistic assessment terms based upon their cognition ability of them. These outcomes obtained by the propounded method and comparison analysis further emphasize the validity and salient merits of the propounded framework and provide several auxiliary suggestions for investors.

Abstract:Risk assessment for environmental projects consists of studying the probability that projects will achieve a satisfactory performance for threshold - values of internal rate of return (IRR) or net present value (NPV).Risk analysis identifies and estimates risks and their level as well as measures considered to mitigate their negative impact. Quantitative risk analysis is performed for estimating the risk of the project by numeric resources.Monte Carlo simulation method can be widely applied in this area due to the advantages recognized both by practitioners and the academic community.By using this method, the distribution of all possible outcomes of an event is generated by analyzing a model several times, each time using random input values selected from the probability distributions considered normal of the components that comprise the model.

Abstract:Numerical calculations of risk measures and risk contributions in credit risk models amount to the evaluation of various forms of quantiles, tail probabilities and tail expectations of the portfolio loss distribution. Though the moment generating function of the loss distribution in the [Formula: see text] model is available in analytic closed form, efficient, accurate and reliable computation of risk measures (Value-at-Risk and Expected Shortfall) and risk contributions for the [Formula: see text] model poses technical challenges. We propose various numerical algorithms for risk measures and risk contributions calculations of the enhanced [Formula: see text] model under the common background vector framework using the Johnson curve fitting method, saddlepoint approximation method, importance sampling in Monte Carlo simulation and check function formulation. Our numerical studies on stylized credit portfolios and benchmark industrial credit portfolios reveal that the Johnson curve fitting approach works very well for credit portfolios with a large number of obligors, demonstrating high level of numerical reliability and computational efficiency. Once we implement the systematic procedure of finding the saddlepoint within an approximate domain, the saddlepoint approximation schemes provide efficient calculation and accurate numerical results. The importance sampling in Monte Carlo simulation methods are easy to implement, but they compete less favorably in accuracy and efficiency with other numerical algorithms. The less commonly used check function formulation is limited to risk measures calculations. It competes favorably in accuracy and reliability, but an extra optimization algorithm is required.

Abstract:Since exchange economy considerably varies in the market assets, asset prices have become an attractive research area for investigating and modeling ambiguous and uncertain information in today markets. This paper proposes a new generative uncertainty mechanism based on the Bayesian Inference and Correntropy (BIC) technique for accurately evaluating asset pricing in markets. This technique examines the potential processes of risk, ambiguity, and variations of market information in a controllable manner. We apply the new BIC technique to a consumption asset-pricing model in which the consumption variations are modeled using the Bayesian network model with observing the dynamics of asset pricing phenomena in the data. These dynamics include the procyclical deviations of price, the countercyclical deviations of equity premia and equity volatility, the leverage impact and the mean reversion of excess returns. The key findings reveal that the precise modeling of asset information can estimate price changes in the market effectively.

Abstract:At present, the economy has entered the new normal. In the environment of economic slowdown, agricultural operation and investment risk management is of great significance in investment activities. In order to avoid the related risks of the agricultural operation and investment, improve the stability of agricultural operation and investment risk assessment, and ensure the effect of the agricultural operation and investment risk assessment, an agricultural operation and investment risk assessment method based on genetic neural network is proposed. This method fully considers the global optimization capability of the genetic algorithm and optimizes the weights and thresholds of the BP neural network. According to the construction principle of the index system, from the perspective of systemic risk and nonsystematic risk, a risk assessment index system for agricultural business investment has been established. Based on the establishment of risk evaluation index system, using the genetic neural network method, the agricultural operation investment risk evaluation model is established to realize the agricultural operation investment risk evaluation. The experimental results show that the proposed method has a good effect on the risk assessment of the agricultural operation and investment and can effectively improve the stability of the risk assessment of agricultural operation and investment.

Value-at-Risk-Based Portfolio Insurance: Performance Evaluation and Benchmarking Against CPPI in a Markov-Modulated Regime-Switching Market

Abstract:Designing dynamic portfolio insurance strategies under market conditions switching between two or more regimes is a challenging task in financial economics. Recently, a promising approach employing the value-at-risk (VaR) measure to assign weights to risky and riskless assets has been proposed in [Jiang C., Ma Y. and An Y. "The effectiveness of the VaR-based portfolio insurance strategy: An empirical analysis" , International Review of Financial Analysis 18(4) (2009): 185-197]. In their study, the risky asset follows a geometric Brownian motion with constant drift and diffusion coefficients. In this paper, we first extend their idea to a regime-switching framework in which the expected return of the risky asset and its volatility depend on an unobservable Markovian term which describes the cyclical nature of asset returns in modern financial markets. We then analyze and compare the resulting VaR-based portfolio insurance (VBPI) strategy with the well-known constant proportion portfolio insurance (CPPI) strategy. In this respect, we employ a variety of performance evaluation criteria such as Sharpe, Omega and Kappa ratios to compare the two methods. Our results indicate that the CPPI strategy has a better risk-return tradeoff in most of the scenarios analyzed and maintains a relatively stable return profile for the resulting portfolio at the maturity.
