Abstract:Nominal classifiers are used to indicate quantity and measurement of nouns.When combined with numerals and nouns,the nominal classifiers,in Thai and Zhuang,both languages of the Tai sub-branch of the Kam-Tai branch,show both similarities and diversities in terms of their grammatical distribution and functions.This paper observes the distribution of nominal classifiers in various endocentric substantial structures,and analyzes their similarities and differences in distribution features and their grammatical functions.It argues that Thai and Zhuang are distinct in their manners of expressing the two grammatical meanings of categories and units:Thai differentiates the two functions of categories and units by way of different distributions of nominal classifiers while Zhuang expresses the two functions by way of identical distribution.Their inconformity entails from their different stages of historical development.

Abstract:Investigating lexical features with statistical methods has always been a key object of quantitative linguistic research. However, though Zhuang is the mother tongue of the minority with the largest population in China, its lexical features have attracted little attention from the researchers employing quantitative means. Based on a corpus (CZL) of over 500,000 tokens of the Zhuang language, this study addresses the features of word frequency distribution of Zhuang. The results show that Zhuang shares the universal feature of other tested languages in that its word frequency distribution abides by the Zipf's Law and the "Least Effort Principle". The study also tests the word frequency distribution of Zhuang texts of different genres, which shows that for different genres, the values of some parameters, such as b, are different. Moreover, in order to test whether Zhuang language has any distinctive or typological features in word frequency distribution, the values of the h-point and a-index of the texts in CZL are computed as well. It is found that the two indexes are effective in distinguishing Zhuang from other languages, and the position of Zhuang on the analytism-synthetism continuum proposed by Popescu is close to those of the Polynesian language family, which may be helpful for intersubjective placement of Zhuang into a language group. This study would open a new perspective in the statistical lexical research of Zhuang language and present a "new" corroborated language with respect to the laws in quantitative linguistics.

Abstract:Mandarin classifiers are a complex system, but little is known about how Mandarin-speaking children manage to learn the system. Based on the extant literature, we explored potential factors influencing the comprehension and production of Mandarin shape classifiers, including classifier-based semantic categorization and errors pertaining to the semantic strategies, input frequency of classifier-noun combinations, and vocabulary knowledge. In total, 138 typically developing monolingual Mandarin-speaking children between ages 4;1 and 6;5 completed an object categorization task, shape classifier comprehension and production tasks, and a vocabulary test. The results showed that classifier-based categorization did not significantly relate to classifier knowledge, but children’s comprehension errors were mostly selecting an object that is perceptually similar to the target object. Estimated input frequency of classifier-noun combinations was significantly related to classifier comprehension, and there was differential accuracy for different classifier-noun combinations, which may indicate item-by-item learning of individual classifier-noun pairings. Mandarin-speaking children may take a combined approach by sorting semantic features for different classifiers and learning individual classifier-noun combinations. The interplay of the two approaches can be very complex and should be further investigated in future studies. Vocabulary knowledge was significantly related to classifier comprehension and production, indicating common traits between classifier learning and noun learning.
Word Length Distribution in Zhuang Language.

Abstract:The present study focuses on the word length distribution (WLD) of Zhuang language. The results show that the WLDs of all texts investigated can be described by the Positive Cohen-Poisson model when the word length is measured by the syllable numbers. However, when the word length is measured by the letter numbers, they do not follow any model from the Poisson or Binomial distribution families widely observed in other languages. However, the WLDs of all the Zhuang texts investigated follow the Zipf-Alekseev function either in terms of syllable or letter numbers. Moreover, the research on the WLDs of different Zhuang genres indicates that WLD may not be a sensitive index in distinguishing different Zhuang genres but an effective one in distinguishing different Zhuang styles (spoken or written). Then, the study of the relationship between the parameters a and b in the Zipf-Alekseev function shows that the self-organizing regularity observed in other languages also exists in Zhuang. Finally, the study of the word length-frequency relationship of Zhuang indicates that Zhuang word length is influenced by its frequency, which can be explained by Zipf's 'Principle of Least Effort' and thus follow the law of lexical synergetic subsystem in synergetic linguistics.

Abstract:The predicate-object structure of the Lahu language is an OV pattern which falls into three groups.Its features find expression in the different semantic relations between predicate and object.Lahu sentences are usually SVO patterns while the positions of the predicate and the object of the Lahu language are in reverse to those of the Chinese language.Putting the object at the beginning of the sentence can help arouse the attention of the audience.

Based on the collocation between the multi-category words of verb-noun and the corresponding classifiers in a large-scale corpus, we describe the verb-noun words phenomenon considering words’ syntactic characteristics and semantic characteristics. The data shows that di4zhen4, jiu4ji4, pei2tong2, shen1qing3 can collocate with classifiers as nouns or verbs and the collocations are distinct. We could see these four as multi-category words of verb-noun because of their evident noun’s and verb’s characteristics. Feng4xian4, ji4zai3 do not have ample collocations with action measure words, neither do with static measure words, but we also consider these two as multi-category words of verb-noun.

Abstract:This article delineates the internal structure of mensural classifiers in Mandarin Chinese by arguing that each mensural classifier in Mandarin Chinese contains a silent semantic primitive SCALE, which can be modified by a restricted set of gradable adjectives. Viewing this silent scalar element as a grammatical object explains away a set of puzzles in Chinese linguistics, including the restricted use of adjectives before mensural classifiers, the seemingly free distributional patterns of verbal measure phrases, and the number indeterminacy in the verb reduplication construction.

Abstract:One of the central issues in cognition is identifying universal and culturally specific patterns of thought. In this study, we examined how one aspect of culture, a linguistic part of speech known asclassifiers, are related to categorization of solid objects. In Experiment 1, we used a numeral classifier elicitation task to examine the classifiers used by speakers of Hmong, Japanese, and Mandarin Chinese (N = 34) with 135 nouns that referred to solid objects. In Experiment 2, adult speakers of English, Japanese, Mandarin Chinese, and Hmong (N = 64) rated the similarity of 39 pictured objects that depicted a subset of the nouns. All groups classified the objects into natural kinds and artifacts, with the category of humans anchoring both divisions. The main difference that emerged from the study was that speakers of Japanese and English rated humans and animals as more similar to each other than Hmong speakers; Mandarin speakers' ratings of the similarity between humans and animals fell in between those of Hmong and English speakers. However, the pattern of categorization of humans and animals found among speakers of the classifier languages contradicted their patterns of classifier use. The findings help to tease apart the effects of language from other cultural factors that impact cognition.

Abstract:While idiosyncrasies of the Chinese classifier system have been a richly studied topic among linguists (Adams and Conklin, 1973; Erbaugh, 1986; Lakoff, 1986), not much work has been done to quantify them with statistical methods. In this paper, we introduce an information-theoretic approach to measuring idiosyncrasy; we examine how much the uncertainty in Mandarin Chinese classifiers can be reduced by knowing semantic information about the nouns that the classifiers modify. Using the empirical distribution of classifiers from the parsed Chinese Gigaword corpus (Graff et al., 2005), we compute the mutual information (in bits) between the distribution over classifiers and distributions over other linguistic quantities. We investigate whether semantic classes of nouns and adjectives differ in how much they reduce uncertainty in classifier choice, and find that it is not fully idiosyncratic; while there are no obvious trends for the majority of semantic classes, shape nouns reduce uncertainty in classifier choice the most.

Abstract:The length of language units, such as word length or sentence length, plays a critical role in register classification studies. However, in this line of work, little attention has been paid to the relationship between the lengths of language units at different levels. The Menzerath-Altmann law (MAL) reflects the functional relationship between the lengths of linguistic units at different levels, and its parameters were shown to be register-sensitive. This article focuses on two interrelated questions based on the MAL: (1) whether there are variations in the hierarchical relationships between language units at different levels and (2) whether such variations will influence register classifications. The results based on written Chinese show that (1) the MAL fittings at the 'sentence > clause > word' levels outperform that at the 'clause > word > character' levels and (2) the classifications based on two registers, i.e., Press (reportage) and Science (academic prose), demonstrate that the fitting parameters at the 'sentence > clause > word' levels also outperform those at the 'clause > word > character' levels. These indicate that the variations of hierarchical relationships between language units at different levels should be considered in register analysis. Further interpretations were given from perspectives of the information-theoretic principle and language evolution.
