Abstract:Discrete droplet transport has drawn much interest in a broad range of applications. Controlling the motion direction in droplet transport, however, is a long-lasting challenge. In this work, a simple yet efficient approach is demonstrated to realize the motion of droplets with directional control on nanostructured surfaces with predefined channels. Light is used as the external stimulus to induce the uneven thermal expansion of the substrate, which leads to the tilting of nanostructured channels so that the droplet is driven to move along the channel. Due to the easy manipulation of light, including both the light position and power density, this study demonstrates the controllable entrance of static water droplets into targeted channels and the simultaneous control of the motion of multiple droplets in multi-channel systems, using just one light source. Besides static droplets, this approach can also be applied for the directional control of moving droplets in multi-channel systems. As a proof-of-concept, such an approach has been utilized for efficient multiplexed reactions for chemical sensing or microreactor applications. This work offers an alternative approach for the manipulation of droplet movement in applications that involve the control of droplet motion.

Abstract:A droplet in an immiscible phase is flexibly and precisely manipulated by light to behave like a submarine. This light method enables flexible 3D transportation, stable suspension, and floating of a droplet, which can be freely altered. The light‐fueled submarine‐like droplet shows promising perspective for long‐sought precise droplet manipulation in various applications. Flexibly and precisely manipulating 3D droplet transportation is a fundamental challenge for broad implications in diagnostics, drug delivery, bioengineering, etc. Herein, a light method is developed for manipulating a droplet to make it behave like a submarine. This light method enables flexible 3D transportation, stable suspension, and floating of a droplet, which can be freely altered. It is demonstrated that the localized photothermal effect induced thermocapillary flow in the water droplet/oil phase is responsible for energizing and manipulating the droplet. With such remarkable motility, the light‐fueled submarine‐like droplet successfully realizes various functions such as the acid‐base detection, particle capture and transportation, and target crystal collection, dissolution and transportation. It is demonstrated that the light‐fueled submarine‐like droplet shows promising perspective for long‐sought precise droplet manipulation in various applications.

Abstract:Droplet crystallization behavior held great potential in crystal preparation, micromaterial engineering, and molecular assembly. However, restricted by natural surface tension, the intrinsic crystallization reg-ulation and efficient harvest of high quality crystal in diverse droplet features were still a great challenge. Herein, we developed a 3D printed semiflexible micro crystallizer with two aspectant sessile platforms that could simultaneously construct a series of heteromorphic droplets (HDs) and controllable HD shape. By shaping HD on the interface of the platform, central-converging micro-flows were generated by coor-dinating the gas-liquid interface and flow intensity (i.e., Ra/Ma) during HD crystallization from 'barrel', 'can', to 'sand clock' shape, which was validated via simulative and experimental research. Therefore, HDs, constructed in semiflexible micro crystallizer, exhibited efficient screening (>70 %) of single cubic crystal just at the center zone of platform, even under wide ranges of concentration and volume, mani-festing excellent repeatability on high quality crystal harvest and relevant interfacial science research. Abstract:Flexible control of droplet transportation is crucial in various applications but constrained by liquid-solid friction. The development of biomimetic lubricant-impregnated slippery surfaces provides a new solution to flexible manipulation of droplet transportation. Herein, a light strategy is reported for flexibly controlling droplet transportation on photosensitive lubricant-impregnated slippery surfaces. Owing to the localized heating effect of a focused laser beam via photothermal conversion, the resultant thermal Marangoni flow and horizontal component of the surface tension associated with the asymmetric wetting ridges are together responsible for actuating droplet transportation. It is found that the the asymmetry of the wetting ridge is dominated by the thickness of the infused oil layer, which directly affects the droplet transportation. The feasibility of this light strategy is also demonstrated by uphill movement, droplet coalescence, and fixed-point chemical reaction. This study provides a new design for potential applications in open droplet microfluidics, analytical chemistry, diagnosis, etc.

Abstract:ABSTRACT The manipulation of droplets plays a vital role in fundamental research and practical applications, from chemical reactions to bioanalysis. As an intriguing and active format, light control of droplets, typically induced by photochemistry, photomechanics, light-induced Marangoni effects or light-induced electric fields, enables remote and contactless control with remarkable spatial and temporal accuracy. However, current light control of droplets suffers from poor performance and limited reliability. Here we develop a new superamphiphobic material that integrates the dual merits of light and electric field by rationally preparing liquid metal particles/poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene) polymer composites with photo-induced charge generation capability in real time, enabling light control of droplets on the basis of photo-induced dielectrophoretic force. We demonstrate that this photo-induced charged surface (PICS) imparts a new paradigm for controllable droplet motion, including high average velocity (∼35.9 mm s−1), unlimited distance, multimode motions (e.g. forward, backward and rotation) and single-to-multiple droplet manipulation, which are otherwise unachievable in conventional strategies. We further extend light control of droplets to robotic and bio-applications, including transporting a solid cargo in a closed tube, crossing a tiny tunnel, avoiding obstacles, sensing the changing environment via naked-eye color shift, preparing hydrogel beads, transporting living cells and reliable biosensing. Our PICS not only provides insight into the development of new smart interface materials and microfluidics, but also brings new possibilities for chemical and biomedical applications.

Abstract:A new optical‐thermal‐electrical platform for droplet manipulation with the pyroelectric crystal surface parallel to the polarization axis achieves multiplex behaviors involving lossless transportation, positioning, rapid mixing, and precise splitting, which offers a promising strategy for well‐controlled manipulation of liquids and is expected to possess a broader application in chemical and biomedical areas. The light‐excited droplet manipulation is crucial in diverse industrial and health domains, owning to the merits of real‐time control and noncontact operation. However, strong driving forces and high‐precision maneuverability for splitting or mixing are still the challenges. Here a novel concept of configurating pyroelectric crystal surface is put forward to carry out multifunctional manipulation of the droplet by optical‐thermal‐electrical effect. Dipole‐like electric charge distribution is excited around the light spot to generate sharper inversion of electric field gradient and 10‐fold stronger dielectrophoretic (DEP) force than conventional photopyroelectric approaches. Both the stable mode and metastable‐oscillation mode are found and can be positively used to make on‐demand sliding and inside mixing of droplets. Especially, various droplets with the surface tension ranging from 25.7 to 85.4 mN m−1 can be split by light. The present droplet manipulation technique demonstrates its promising applications in cargo transportation, combinatorial chemistry and biomedical analysis.

Effects of chemical and geometric micro-structures on crystallization of surface droplets during solvent exchange

Abstract:In this work, we investigate crystallization from droplets formed on micro-patterned surfaces. By solvent exchange in a micro-chamber, a ternary solution consisting of a model compound beta-alanine, water, and isopropanol, was displaced by a flow of isopropanol. In the process, oiling-out droplets formed and crystallized. Our results showed that the shape and size of the crystals on micro-patterned surfaces could be simply mediated by the flow conditions of solvent exchange. Varying flow rate, concentration, or channel height led to the formation of a thin film with micro-holes, connected network of crystals, or small diamond-shaped crystals. Rough micro-structures on the surface allowed the easy detachment of crystals from the surface. Beyond oiling-out crystallization, we demonstrated that the crystal formation from another solute dissolved in the droplets could be triggered by solvent exchange. The length of crystal fibers after the solvent exchange process was shorter at a faster flow rate. This study may provide further understanding to effectively obtain crystallization from surface droplets through the solvent exchange approach.
Charge Density Gradient Propelled Ultrafast Sweeping Removal of Dropwise Condensates

Abstract:Continuous sweeping of dropwise condensates is an effective form of vapor to liquid transition in terms of thermal transport at a solid/liquid interface. However, using conventional approaches, it is difficult to simultaneously achieve small activating size and fast departure of condensed droplets with high efficiency, due to the insufficient driving force compared to adhesion. Her; we propose an unexplored method to stimulate a frequent sweeping removal of dropwise condensates at ultrahigh efficiency on a superhydrophobic substrate, aided by a charge density gradient (CDG). We show that the CDG can be injected inside a superhydrophobic substrate on which the condensate droplet with jump-induced charges starts to sweep at a small size down to the microscale followed by quick snowball-like growing and chase-like propelling. The incorporation of the CDG on a superhydrophobic substrate enables a continuous, fast, frequent, long-range, and gravity-independent droplet removal during condensation, making this strategy a promising solution for diverse applications in water harvesting, antifogging, and anti-icing.

Abstract:Actuating droplet bouncing from a rigid surface is of considerable interest for potential applications, ranging from novel droplet microfluidics to self-cleaning and anti-icing. The photothermal effect and the accompanying phase change initiate a route for manipulating the tiny amount of liquid. In this work, we present a concept of droplet bouncing from a cavity trap-assisted superhydrophobic platform actuated by the photothermal effect-induced intense evaporation, which enables the purposeful manipulation of the droplet bouncing. It is demonstrated that such a design limits the vapor transport so that the vapor pressure under the droplet is considerably improved to overcome the gravity and liquid–solid adhesion force, leading to the droplet bouncing. Moreover, experimental results indicate that droplet bouncing behaviors can be easily tuned by simply adjusting the cavity dimension and the input laser power. Abstract:Surface condensation control strategies are crucial but commonly require relatively tedious, time-consuming, and expensive techniques for surface-chemical and topographical engineering. Here we report a strategy to alter surface condensation behavior without resorting to any molecule-type or topographical transmutations. After ultrafast contact of liquids with and removal from surfaces, the condensation rate and density of water droplets on the surfaces decrease, the extent of which is positively correlated with the polarity of the liquid and the duration of contact. The liquid contact-induced condensation rate/density decrease (LCICD) can be attributed to the decrease of nucleation site density resulted from the liquid contact-induced adaption of surface molecular conformation. Based on this, we find that LCICD is applicable to various surfaces, on condition that there are flexible segments capable of shielding at least part of nucleation sites through changing the conformation under liquid contact induction. Leveraging the LCICD effect, we achieve erasable information storage on diverse substrates. Furthermore, our strategy holds promise for controlling condensation of other substances since LCICD is not specific to the water condensation process.

Abstract:This work presents a novel strategy of performing a reversible microcrystalline-spherulite morphology transition based on photo-triggered immiscible phase aggregation in semi-crystalline block polymer. We propose that by assembling or disintegrating immiscible photo-active aggregates during melt crystallization under illuminations, end-to-end distance R of the photo-inactive semi-crystalline polymer chains can be adjusted to generate high-entropy state, R< R 0 or low-entropy state, R > R 0. Thus, the corresponding entropic effect influences chain nucleation and can be used to control crystallization morphologies. Besides, photo-tunable mechanical and electrical properties can be also simultaneously endowed. Promising potential applications of this study for optical patterning, memory materials and solid-state electrochemistry can be anticipated.

Dynamic control of active droplets using light-responsive chiral liquid crystal environment

Abstract:Microscopic active droplets are of interest since they can be used to transport matter from one point to another. The challenge is to control the trajectory. In this work, we demonstrate an approach to control the direction of active droplet propulsion by a photoresponsive cholesteric liquid crystal environment. The active droplet represents a water dispersion of bacterial B. subtilis microswimmers. When placed in a cholesteric, a surfactant-stabilized active droplet distorts the local director field, producing a point defect-hedgehog, which breaks the fore-aft symmetry. The chaotic motion of the bacteria inside the droplet is rectified into directional motion by the asymmetric director field outside the droplet. When the pitch of the cholesteric is altered by visible light irradiation, the asymmetry axis and thus the droplet trajectory realign along a new direction. Droplets realign counterclockwise on exposure to light of 535 nm, and clockwise on exposure to light of 450 nm, as dictated by the photoinduced change in the handedness of the cholesteric. The strategy allows for a non-contact dynamic control of active droplets trajectories and demonstrates the advantage of orientationally ordered media in control of active matter over their isotropic counterparts.

Abstract:Charged microdroplets are favored in microfluidic control, biomedicine, chemistry and materials processing due to their unique physicochemical environment, including interface double layers, high electric fields, surface concentration enrichment, and more. Herein, we investigated the crystallization of charged sodium chloride microdroplets and achieved the formation of hollow single crystals in a single-step process lasting only a few seconds, without the use of templates. Additionally, we discussed the plausible crystal growth mechanism, which appears to be an unconventional outward-inward growth process.
Photoreversible fragmentation of a liquid interface for micro-droplet generation by light actuation

Abstract:We describe a method to induce by light a reversible switch from a continuous two-phase laminar flow to a droplet generating regime, in microfluidic devices with a usual water-in-oil flow focusing geometry. It consists in adding a photosensitive surfactant to the aqueous phase to modulate using light the interfacial energy between flowing liquids and the microfluidic substrate. We show that UV irradiation induces liquid fragmentation into monodisperse water microdroplets and that many cycles of reversible and rapid switches (<2 s) between continuous laminar flows and stable droplet regimes can be realized. By spatially controlling the application of the light stimulus, we also demonstrate the first spatially resolved remote induction of droplet generation.

Abstract:Water-in-oil droplet generation for object encapsulation is of increasing importance in biochemical reaction, drug diagnostics, and environmental science. Optofluidic technique is a powerful tool for manipulating mesoscopic particles and droplets within a continuous liquid phase. Here, we report a flexible and miniaturized droplet generator based on a microvortex chip by light-heat energy conversion to fuse, trap, and release picoliter aqueous droplets in the immiscible carrier oil. The droplet sizes in the generators can be tuned by the flow rate of the vortices. Further, it is demonstrated that the generated droplet can realize size-selective encapsulation of micro-matters with tunable rotating trajectories. The results showed that the microvortex-based droplet generator propose a method for the stable fusion and encapsulation of droplet with controllable positions and volumes. This system will provide a controllable microfluidic environment for droplet tweezers, micro-reactors, micro-mixers, and object encapsulation in practical applications.

Abstract:Harnessing photoresponsive behavior in organic crystals, such as shape and morphology deformation, on multiple scales is intriguing with respect to precise spatiotemporal operation, because dynamic deformations are promising in fabricating future intelligent devices. Here, we synthesized a new photo responsive molecular crystal composed of dimethyl (E)-2-(3-(naphthalen-1-yl)allylidene)malonate ((E)-DNAM) that undergoes E-to -Z photoisomerization accompanied by photoinduced crystal-to-liquid melting phase transition when exposed to visible light. Instead of expanding in bulk polycrystals, single-crystal (E)-DNAM rectangular microplates in an aqueous solution rapidly collapsed into liquid droplets, showing a remarkable drastic reduction in surface area of more than 97% after light illumination. We deduce that the unique microscopic morphology of microplates with high aspect ratios of length-to thickness reaching up to 1000 is mainly responsible for the photoinduced melting leading to drastic collapse. In addition, the cohesive forces of liquid photoproduct facilitate the overall deformations and transformation. We have shown a facile way to achieve the remarkable collapse of molecular crystals into droplets by photochemical reaction and phase transition.
