Abstract:In this paper, we investigate $C^2$ super-smoothness of the full $C^1$ cubic spline space on a Powell-Sabin refined triangulation, for which a B-spline basis can be constructed. Blossoming is used to identify the $C^2$ smoothness conditions between the functionals of the dual basis. Some of these conditions can be enforced without difficulty on general triangulations. Others are more involved but greatly simplify if the triangulation and its corresponding Powell-Sabin refinement possess certain symmetries. Furthermore, it is shown how the $C^2$ smoothness constraints can be integrated into the spline representation by reducing the set of basis functions. As an application of the super-smooth basis functions, a reduced spline space is introduced that maintains the cubic precision of the full $C^1$ spline space.

Abstract:Pseudo-splines of type I were introduced in [I. Daubechies, B. Han, A. Ron, Z. Shen, Framelets: MRA-based constructions of wavelet frames, Appl. Comput. Harmon. Anal. 14 (2003) 1–46] and [Selenick, Smooth wavelet tight frames with zero moments, Appl. Comput. Harmon. Anal. 10 (2000) 163–181] and type II were introduced in [B. Dong, Z. Shen, Pseudo-splines, wavelets and framelets, Appl. Comput. Harmon. Anal. 22 (2007) 78–104]. Both types of pseudo-splines provide a rich family of refinable functions with B-splines, interpolatory refinable functions and refinable functions with orthonormal shifts as special examples. In [B. Dong, Z. Shen, Pseudo-splines, wavelets and framelets, Appl. Comput. Harmon. Anal. 22 (2007) 78–104], Dong and Shen gave a regularity analysis of pseudo-splines of both types. The key to regularity analysis is Proposition 3.2 in [B. Dong, Z. Shen, Pseudo-splines, wavelets and framelets, Appl. Comput. Harmon. Anal. 22 (2007) 78–104], which also appeared in [A. Cohen, J.P. Conze, Régularité des bases d'ondelettes et mesures ergodiques, Rev. Mat. Iberoamericana 8 (1992) 351–365] and [I. Daubechies, Ten Lectures on Wavelets, CBMS-NSF Series in Applied Mathematics, SIAM, Philadelphia, 1992] for the case l=N−1. In this note, we will give a new insight into this proposition.

Abstract:The space of $C^1$ cubic Clough-Tocher splines is a classical finite element approximation space over triangulations for solving partial differential equations. However, for such a space there is no B-spline basis available, which is a preferred choice in computer aided geometric design and isogeometric analysis. A B-spline basis is a locally supported basis that forms a convex partition of unity. In this paper, we explore several alternative $C^1$ cubic spline spaces over triangulations equipped with a B-spline basis. They are defined over a Powell-Sabin refined triangulation and present different types of $C^2$ super-smoothness. The super-smooth B-splines are obtained through an extraction process, i.e., they are expressed in terms of less smooth basis functions. These alternative spline spaces maintain the same optimal approximation power as Clough-Tocher splines. This is illustrated with a selection of numerical examples in the context of least squares approximation and finite element approximation for second and fourth order boundary value problems.

Explicit Formulas for Bicubic Spline Surface Interpolation

Abstract:In this paper, explicit formulas are developed for representing a uniform bicubic spline surface that passes through an array of data points. The interpolated surface in the closed case is topologically equivalent to a torus. Open surface cases are reduced to closed surface cases by introducing one or two rows of `free points' such that the spline surface wraps around its boundaries. Ordinary interpolation surfaces in open cases can thus be constructed with the same formulas. It turns to be more intuitive and effective to control and modify the shape of the resultant surfaces by adjusting `free points' than by the usual derivatives and twist vectors. The interpolation surface is obtained in a two step way and the procedure is very easy to implement. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed formulas are practically useful.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate a new family of refinable functions named pseudo box splines which generalize univariate pseudo-splines to the multivariate setting. The properties of pseudo box splines including stability and regularity are analyzed. Furthermore, we obtain a series of compactly supported C∞ refinable functions by applying nonstationary cascade algorithms to the masks of pseudo box splines. Using these functions, we construct compactly supported nonstationary C∞ tight wavelet frames in L2(Rs) with the spectral frame approximation order.

Abstract:We deal with the problem of constructing, representing, and manipulating C 3 quartic splines on a given arbitrary triangulation T , where every triangle of T is equipped with the quartic Wang–Shi macro-structure. The resulting C 3 quartic spline space has a stable dimension and any function in the space can be locally built via Hermite interpolation on each of the macro-triangles separately, without any geometrical restriction on T . We provide a simplex spline basis for the space of C 3 quartics defined on a single macro-triangle which behaves like a B-spline basis within the triangle and like a Bernstein basis for imposing smoothness across the edges of the triangle. The basis functions form a nonnegative partition of unity, inherit recurrence relations and differentiation formulas from the simplex spline construction, and enjoy a Marsden-like identity.

Abstract:Basis functions of biquadratic polynomial spline spaces over hierarchical T-meshes are constructed. The basis functions are all tensor-product B-splines, which are linearly independent, nonnegative and complete. To make basis functions more efficient for geometric modeling, we also give out a new basis with the property of unit partition. Two preliminary applications are given to demonstrate that the new basis is efficient.

Abstract:We introduce here a direct method to construct multivariate explicit B-spline bases. B-splines are piecewise polynomials, which are defined on adjacent tetrahedra and which are $C^{r}$ continuous throughout. The $C^{r}$ continuity is enforced by making sure that all directional derivatives of order $r$, and lower, on the boundaries of adjacent tetrahedra give the same values for both tetrahedra. The method presented here is explicit, in that we will provide an algorithm with which one can analytically construct the B-spline base that enforces $C^{r}$ continuity for a given geometry.

Abstract:The material point method (MPM) enhanced with B‐spline basis functions, referred to as B‐spline MPM (BSMPM), is developed and demonstrated using representative quasi‐static and dynamic example problems. Smooth B‐spline basis functions could significantly reduce the cell‐crossing error as known for the original MPM. A Gauss quadrature scheme is designed and shown to be able to diminish the quadrature error in the BSMPM analysis of large‐deformation problems for the improved accuracy and convergence, especially with the quadratic B‐splines. Moreover, the increase in the order of the B‐spline basis function is also found to be an effective way to reduce the quadrature error and to improve accuracy and convergence. For plate impact examples, it is demonstrated that the BSMPM outperforms the generalized interpolation material point (GIMP) and convected particle domain interpolation (CPDI) methods in term of the accuracy of representing stress waves. Thus, the BSMPM could become a promising alternative to the MPM, GIMP, and CPDI in solving certain types of transient problems.

Abstract:Determining the lowest degree, dimensions and basis functions of btp (bivariate truncated power(s)) spaces with given smoothness requirements and establishing the calculation formulae of btp on a three- and four-direction mesh, we give the necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of the bivariate BM-spline in S42,Z2 and the bivariate BM-spline in S21,Z2 in terms of linear combinations of btp. Abstract:For a subdivision Δ of a region in d-dimensional Euclidean space, we consider computation of dimension and of basis function in spline space S k r (Δ) consisting of all C piecewise polynomial functions over Δ of degree at most k. A computational scheme is presented for computing the dimension and bases of spline space S k r (Δ). This scheme based on the Grobner basis algorithm and the smooth co-factor method for computing multivariate spline. For bivariate splines, explicit basis functions of S k r (Δ) are obtained for any integer k and r when Δ is a cross-cut partition.

Abstract:Surface blending is a useful operation in geometric design for rounding sharp edges or corners. Meanwhile, NURBS has already become the de facto industrial standard in existing CAD/CAM systems. Therefore, it is required to study how to blend two B -spline surfaces. However, two arbitrary B -spline surfaces (called base surfaces) are hard to be blended with a B -spline surface (called blending surface) because the knot vectors of the two base surfaces are usually mismatched. In this paper, we proposed a curve-based spline representation, i.e., the semi-structured B-spline surface, which is generated by skinning a series of B -spline curves with different knot vectors. By assigning suitable knot vectors to the head and tail skinned curves, the semi-structured B -spline surface can blend two B -spline surfaces smoothly without disturbing them at all. We formulated the B -spline surface blending problem as an optimization problem with continuity constraints, and the continuity between the base and blending surfaces can reach G 2 or C 2 . Examples illustrated in this paper validate the effectiveness and efficiency of our method.

Abstract:In this work we present a new construction of basis functions that generate the space of geometrically smooth splines on an unstructured quadrilateral mesh. The basis is represented in terms of biquintic Bézier polynomials on each quadrilateral face. The gluing along the face boundaries is achieved using quadratic gluing data functions, leading to globally G 1 –smooth spaces. We analyze the latter space and provide a combinatorial formula for its dimension as well as an explicit basis construction. Moreover, we assess the use of this basis in point cloud fitting problems. To apply G 1 least squares fitting, a quadrilateral structure as well as parameters in each quadrilateral is required. Even though the general problem of segmenting and parametrizing point clouds is beyond the focus of the present work, we describe a procedure that produces such a structure as well as patch-local parameters. Our experiments demonstrate the accuracy and smoothness of the obtained reconstructed models in several challenging instances.

Abstract:An integer generalized spline is a set of vertex labels on an edge-labeled graph that satisfy the condition that if two vertices are joined by an edge, the vertex labels are congruent modulo the edge label. Foundational work on these objects comes from Gilbert, Polster, and Tymoczko, who generalize ideas from geometry/topology (equivariant cohomology rings) and algebra (algebraic splines) to develop the notion of generalized splines. Gilbert, Polster, and Tymoczko prove that the ring of splines on a graph can be decomposed in terms of splines on its subgraphs (in particular, on trees and cycles), and then fully analyze splines on trees. Following Handschy-Melnick-Reinders and Rose, we analyze splines on cycles, in our case integer generalized splines. The primary goal of this paper is to establish two new bases for the module of integer generalized splines on cycles: the triangulation basis and the King basis. Unlike bases in previous work, we are able to characterize each basis element completely in terms of the edge labels of the underlying cycle. As an application we explicitly construct the multiplication table for the ring of integer generalized splines in terms of the King basis.
A general class of $C^1$ smooth rational splines: Application to construction of exact ellipses and ellipsoids

Abstract:In this paper, we describe a general class of $C^1$ smooth rational splines that enables, in particular, exact descriptions of ellipses and ellipsoids - some of the most important primitives for CAD and CAE. The univariate rational splines are assembled by transforming multiple sets of NURBS basis functions via so-called design-through-analysis compatible extraction matrices; different sets of NURBS are allowed to have different polynomial degrees and weight functions. Tensor products of the univariate splines yield multivariate splines. In the bivariate setting, we describe how similar design-through-analysis compatible transformations of the tensor-product splines enable the construction of smooth surfaces containing one or two polar singularities. The material is self-contained, and is presented such that all tools can be easily implemented by CAD or CAE practitioners within existing software that support NURBS. To this end, we explicitly present the matrices (a) that describe our splines in terms of NURBS, and (b) that help refine the splines by performing (local) degree elevation and knot insertion. Finally, all $C^1$ spline constructions yield spline basis functions that are locally supported and form a convex partition of unity.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the progressive iteration approximation property of a curve (tensor product surface) generated by blending a given data point set and a set of basis functions. The curve (tensor product surface) has the progressive iteration approximation property as long as the basis is totally positive and the corresponding collocation matrix is nonsingular. Thus, the B-spline and NURBS curve (surface) have the progressive iteration approximation property, and Bézier curve (surface) also has the property if the corresponding collocation matrix is nonsingular.

Abstract:Splines over triangulations and splines over quadrangulations (tensor product splines) are two common ways to extend bivariate polynomials to splines. However, combination of both approaches leads to splines defined over mixed triangle and quadrilateral meshes using the isogeometric approach. Mixed meshes are especially useful for representing complicated geometries obtained e.g. from trimming. As (bi-)linearly parameterized mesh elements are not flexible enough to cover smooth domains, we focus in this work on the case of planar mixed meshes parameterized by (bi-)quadratic geometry mappings. In particular we study in detail the space of $C^1$-smooth isogeometric spline functions of general polynomial degree over two such mixed mesh elements. We present the theoretical framework to analyze the smoothness conditions over the common interface for all possible configurations of mesh elements. This comprises the investigation of the dimension as well as the construction of a basis of the corresponding $C^1$-smooth isogeometric spline space over the domain described by two elements. Several examples of interest are presented in detail.
