Abstract:The updated Higgs measurements in various search channels with ATLAS Run 1 data are reviewed. Both the Standard Model (SM) Higgs results, such as H → γγ, ZZ, WW, ττ, μμ, bb̄, and Beyond Standard Model (BSM) results, such as the charged Higgs, Higgs invisible decay and tensor couplings, are summarized. Abstract:Combining measurements of many production and decay channels of the observed Higgs boson allows for the highest possible measurement precision for the properties of the Higgs boson and its interactions. These combined measurements are interpreted in various ways; specific scenarios of physics beyond the Standard Model (SM) are tested, as well as a generic extension in the framework of the Standard Model Effective Field Theory. The latest highlight results of these measurements and their interpretations performed by the ATLAS Collaboration are discussed.

Abstract:After the Higgs boson discovery in 2012, the experiments at the LHC are continuing to study this particle and look for physics beyond the standard model. Some of the Higgs boson properties, such as the mass, has been measured with sub-percent level accuracy. Yet the present integrated luminosity is still a limiting factor for measuring the Higgs boson self-coupling or the first generation Yukawa couplings. The current constraints on the Higgs boson couplings would still allow for a sizeable branching fraction into undetected final states, which motivates the direct searches for rare and exotic decay modes. This presentation discusses several new results from these searches utilizing advanced online selection methods or analysis techniques with the entire Run 2 data.

Abstract:We report on the potential for the discovery of a Standard Model Higgs boson with the vector boson fusion mechanism in the mass range $115<M_H<500 \gev$ with the ATLAS experiment at the LHC. Feasibility studies at hadron level followed by a fast detector simulation have been performed for $H\to W^{(*)}W^{(*)}\to l^+l^-\sla{p_T}$, $H\to\gamma\gamma$ and $H\to ZZ\to l^+l^-q\bar{q}$. The results obtained show a large discovery potential in the range $115<M_H<300 \gev$. Results obtained with multivariate techniques are reported for a number of channels.
Discovery Potential of the Standard Model Higgs Boson Through H -> WW Decay Mode with the ATLAS Detector at LHC

Abstract:We report results of a study of the Standard Model Higgs boson discovery potential through the W-pair leptonic decay modes with the ATLAS detector at LHC at 14 TeV center-of-mass energy. We used MC samples with full detector simulation and reconstruction of the ATLAS experiment to estimate the ATLAS detection sensitivity for the reaction of pp -> H -> WW -> e\nu \mu\nu with no hard jet or two hard jets in the final states. The prospects for the Higgs boson searches at ATLAS are presented, including trigger efficiencies and data-driven methods to estimate the backgrounds using control samples in data. With 10/fb of integrated luminosity, one would expect to discover a Standard Model Higgs boson with ATLAS detector in Higgs boson mass range 135 < m_H < 190 GeV. If the Higgs boson does not exist, we will extend and confirm the exclusion produced by the Tevatron Higgs boson search result, which has ruled out the Higgs boson mass range of 160 < m_H < 170 GeV at 95% confidence level. If Higgs boson would be discovered, ATLAS could measure its mass with a precision of about 2 and 7 GeV for Higgs boson mass around 160 GeV and 130 GeV, respectively.
Characterising the Higgs boson with ATLAS data from Run 2 of the LHC

Abstract:The Higgs boson was discovered by the ATLAS and CMS Collaborations in 2012 using data from Run 1 of the Large Hadron Collider (2010$-$2012). In Run 2 (2015$-$2018), about 140 fb$^{-1}$ of proton$-$proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV were collected by the ATLAS experiment. This review presents the most important Run 2 results obtained by the ATLAS Collaboration regarding the properties of the Higgs boson and its interactions with other particles. The performed studies significantly enhance the understanding of the Higgs boson, while hunting for deviations from the predictions of the Standard Model of particle physics.

Abstract:Since the discovery of the Higgs boson in 2012 by the ATLAS and CMS Collaborations a lot of progress has been made in verifying the nature of this new bosonic particle. Still, questions remain as to whether this new particle is the standard model (SM) Higgs boson, and whether it gives us hints of where physics beyond the SM (BSM) might be hidden. This overview tries to tackle these questions by looking at three types of analyses 1) Total cross section measurements of the various Higgs boson production and decay modes, allowing us access to the various Higgs boson couplings to SM bosons and fermions, 2) Differential Higgs boson cross section measurements such as in the STXS framework allowing for a model independent search for BSM and, finally, 3) The searches for di-Higgs production which give access to the trilinear Higgs self coupling $\lambda$ and the Higgs potential itself.

Abstract:The latest results of Higgs boson searches beyond the Standard Model from the ATLAS and CMS experiments are reviewed. This includes searches for additional neutral, charged, and double charged Higgs-like bosons, searches for dark matter produced in association with a Higgs boson, and searches for new physics in Higgs boson production and decay processes. Interpretations are given within the hMSSM, a special parameterization of the Minimal Supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model, in which the mass of the lightest Higgs boson is set to the value of 125 GeV measured at the LHC.

Abstract:Extending the Higgs sector by introducing additional scalar fields to account for the electroweak symmetry breaking, can provide solutions to some of the questions the Standard Model fails to answer. Introducing additional scalar fields leads to extra Higgs like particles, which can be either neutral or charged. Abstract:The Standard Model predicts several rare Higgs boson decay channels, among which are the decays to a Z boson and a photon, to a low-mass lepton pair and a photon, and to a meson and a photon. The observation of some of these decays could open the possibility of studying the CP and coupling properties of the Higgs boson in a complementary way to other analyses. In addition, lepton-flavor-violating decays of the observed Higgs boson are searched for, where an observation would be a clear sign of physics effects beyond the Standard Model. These proceedings present selected recent results for such decays based on proton-proton collision data at 13 TeV collected by the ATLAS experiment in Run 2 of the LHC.

Abstract:This paper presents an investigation into the properties of the new particle discovered in the search for the Standard Model Higgs boson by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC. The searches in the H → ZZ(*) → 4ℓ, H → γγ, H → WW(*) → ℓνℓν , H → H → τ+τ− and H → bb̅ channels include several exclusive final states, which provide sensitivity to the coupling properties of the observed particle through the various production and decay modes. Several benchmarks are considered that are designed to probe different aspects of the SM Higgs boson couplings. No significant deviation from the prediction for a SM Higgs boson is found.

Abstract:The potential for the discovery of a Standard Model Higgs boson in the mass range m_H < 2 m_Z in the vector boson fusion mode has been studied for the ATLAS experiment at the LHC. The characteristic signatures of additional jets in the forward regions of the detector and of low jet activity in the central region allow for an efficient background rejection. Analyses for the H -> WW and H -> tau tau decay modes have been performed using a realistic simulation of the expected detector performance. The results obtained demonstrate the large discovery potential in the H -> WW decay channel and the sensitivity to Higgs boson decays into tau-pairs in the low-mass region around 120 GeV.

Abstract:This report reviews the published results of searches for possible additional scalar particles and exotic decays of the Higgs boson performed by the ATLAS Collaboration using up to 140 fb$^{-1}$ of 13 TeV proton-proton collision data collected during Run 2 of the Large Hadron Collider. Key results are examined, and observed excesses, while never statistically compelling, are noted. Constraints are placed on parameters of several models which extend the Standard Model, for example by adding one or more singlet or doublet fields, or offering exotic Higgs boson decay channels. Summaries of new searches as well as extensions of previous searches are discussed. These new results have a wider reach or attain stronger exclusion limits. New experimental techniques that were developed for these searches are highlighted. Search channels which have not yet been examined are also listed, as these provide insight into possible future areas of exploration.

Abstract:The Higgs boson, a fundamental scalar, was discovered at CERN in 2012 with mass 125 GeV, a mass that turned out to be a remarkable choice of Nature. In the Standard Model of particle physics, the Higgs boson is closely linked to the mechanism that gives mass to the W and Z gauge bosons that mediate the weak interactions and to the charged fermions. Following discovery of the Higgs boson, present measurements at the Large Hadron Collider are focused on testing the Higgs boson's couplings to other elementary particles, precision measurements of the Higgs boson's properties and initial investigation of the Higgs boson's self-interaction and shape of the Higgs potential. With the Higgs boson mass of 125 GeV the vacuum sits very close to the border of stable and metastable, which may be a hint to deeper physics beyond the Standard Model. The Higgs potential also plays an important role in ideas about the cosmological constant or dark energy that drives the accelerating expansion of the Universe, the mysterious dark matter that comprises about 80% of the matter component in the Universe, as well as a possible phase transition in the early Universe that might be responsible for baryogenesis. Detailed study of the Higgs boson is at the centre of the recent European Strategy for Particle Physics update. Here we review the present status of this physics and discuss the new insights expected from present and future experiments.

Abstract:The large dataset of about 3000 fb$^{-1}$ that will be collected by both the ATLAS and CMS experiments at the High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) will be used to measure Higgs boson properties in detail. Studies based on current analyses have been carried out to understand the expected precision and limitations of these measurements. The large dataset will also allow for better sensitivity to Higgs boson pair production processes and the Higgs boson self-coupling. This proceeding presents the prospects for the precise measurements of the Higgs boson properties and Higgs boson pair production with the ATLAS and CMS detectors at the HL-LHC.

Abstract:The present status of ATLAS searches for Higgs bosons in extensions of the Standard Model (SM) is presented. This includes searches for the Higgs bosons of the Two-Higgs-Doublet Model (2HDM), the Minimal Supersymmetric Model (MSSM), the Next-to-Minimal Supersymmetric Model (NMSSM) and models with an invisibly decaying Higgs boson. A review of the phenomenology of the Higgs sectors of these models is given together with the search strategy and the resulting experimental constraints.

Abstract:The Standard Model of particle physics describes the known fundamental particles and forces that make up our universe, with the exception of gravity. One of the central features of the Standard Model is a field that permeates all of space and interacts with fundamental particles. The quantum excitation of this field, known as Higgs field, manifests itself as the Higgs boson, the only fundamental particle with no spin. In 2012, a particle with properties consistent with the Higgs boson of the Standard Model was observed by the ATLAS and CMS experiments at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. Since then, more than 30 times as many Higgs bosons have been recorded by the ATLAS experiment, allowing much more precise measurements and new tests of the theory. Here, on the basis of this larger dataset, we combine an unprecedented number of production and decay processes of the Higgs boson to scrutinize its interactions with elementary particles. Interactions with gluons, photons, and $W$ and $Z$ bosons -- the carriers of the strong, electromagnetic, and weak forces -- are studied in detail. Interactions with three third-generation matter particles (bottom ($b$) and top ($t$) quarks, and tau leptons ($\tau$)) are well measured and indications of interactions with a second-generation particle (muons, $\mu$) are emerging. These tests reveal that the Higgs boson discovered ten years ago is remarkably consistent with the predictions of the theory and provide stringent constraints on many models of new phenomena beyond the Standard Model.

Observation of the Higgs Particle in Gamma+gamma Events and Search for the Higgs Particle in Z+gamma Events at ATLAS

Abstract:This thesis focuses on the searches for the Higgs boson in events with photons in the final states, using the full proton-proton collision data collected by ATLAS at center-mass-energy of 7 TeV and 8 TeV in 2011 and 2012.Higgs boson decays to photon pairs or to a photon and a Z boson decaying to di-electrons or di-muons are investigated. The event selection, the main backgrounds, the signal properties, and the statistical discrimination between the signal and background in data and the interpretation of the results in terms of a Standard Model Higgs boson are discussed. In the H decays to diphoton channel a clear excess over the background is seen at a mass of mH= 126.8 +- 0.2(stat) +- 0.7(syst) GeV, with a local significance of 7.4 sigma. In the rare decay channel H decays to Z+gamma no evidence of excess over the background is observed in the mass range 120-150 GeV, and, for a Higgs boson mass near the one obtained from the combined mass measurement in the diphoton and 4-lepton final states, mH=125.5 GeV, an upper limit of 11 times the SM prediction, at 95% confidence level, is set on the production cross section times the H to Z+gamma cross section. One of the most important ingredient for these measurements is the efficient reconstruction and identification of photons, and a precise knowledge of the trigger and identification performance. A significant part of the document is thus devoted to the photon performance optimisation and measurement activities that I carried on in the past three years.
