Abstract:In the 1990's exponential-type error bounds appeared in the theory of radial basis functions. This kind of error bounds is very powerful. However it only measures the difference between the approximant and approximand. Mathematicians and engineers often need to know the matching of the derivatives when dealing with partial differential equations. In this paper we extend this kind of error bounds to a form which measures the difference between the derivatives of the approximant and approximand.

Abstract:In this paper, the refined estimates on aliasing errors on integration of Chebyshev polynomials by Gauss quadrature are present, which, together with the asymptotic formulae on the coefficients of Chebyshev expansions, deduces an improved convergence rate for Gauss quadrature. The convergence orders are attainable for some functions of finite regularities.

Abstract:Chebyshev interpolation is a highly effective, intensively studied method and enjoys excellent numerical properties which provides tremendous application potential in mathematical finance. The interpolation nodes are known beforehand, implementation is straightforward and the method is numerically stable. For efficiency, a sharp error bound is essential, in particular for high-dimensional applications. For tensorized Chebyshev interpolation, we present an error bound that improves existing results significantly.

Abstract: We study in this paper the function approximation error of linear interpolation and extrapolation. Several upper bounds are presented along with the conditions under which they are sharp. All results are under the assumptions that the function has Lipschitz continuous gradient and is interpolated on an affinely independent sample set. Errors for quadratic functions and errors of bivariate linear extrapolation are analyzed in depth.

Abstract:This paper improves error bounds for Gauss, Clenshaw–Curtis and Fejér’s first quadrature by using new error estimates for polynomial interpolation in Chebyshev points. We also derive convergence rates of Chebyshev interpolation polynomials of the first and second kind for numerical evaluation of highly oscillatory integrals. Preliminary numerical results show that the improved error bounds are reasonably sharp.

Abstract:This paper proposes a new error upper bound formula for the Gaussian integration of the near-singular integral using the Boundary Element Method. First, this study found through numerical tests that the maximum relative error of the Gaussian integration has a downward concave shape but an approximately linear relationship with the relative distance, which is defined as the ratio of the distance from the source point to the element over the element length in a semi-logarithmic plot. Thus, the error upper bound can be defined as a line that closely approaches the computed error data points from the upper side. This line can be obtained by connecting two specified data points that are located outside, but very close to, the considered error range. Further research indicates that one parameter of the fitted line has a linear relationship with the number of Gaussian integration points and singularity orders and the other parameter can be treated as a constant, which together make the proposed Gaussian integration error upper bound formula widely applicable. Compared to the Lachat and Watson criterion, the proposed formula requires fewer integration points when the source point is very close to the element and thus serves to improve computational efficiency. The proposed formula also avoids calculation failure that can occur when using the Davies and Bu criterion. The numerical example results show that the proposed error upper bound formula can evaluate the integration accuracy well and improve computational efficiency when using an adaptive Gaussian integration method.

Abstract:This paper presents new asymptotics on the coefficients of f(x) expanded in forms of ultraspherical or Jacobi polynomial series, which imply the rate of the decay of the coefficients and derive the truncated error bounds. Moreover, we show that the Chebyshev coefficient alpha(n) decays a factor of root n faster than the Legendre coefficient u(n). By using the Chebyshev expansion for f(x) of finite regularity, we give new error bounds for a Gauss-type quadrature and present the aliasing error between the coefficients, which shows the equal accuracy of these quadratures for nonanalytic functions.

Abstract:Using the result of the error estimate of the simple extended Newton method established in the present paper for solving abstract inequality systems, we study the error bound property of approximate solutions of abstract inequality systems on Banach spaces with the involved function F being Fréchet differentiable and its derivative F^' satisfying the center-Lipschitz condition (not necessarily the Lipschitz condition) around a point x 0 . Under some mild conditions, we establish results on the existence of the solutions, and the error bound properties for approximate solutions of abstract inequality systems. Applications of these results to finite/infinite systems of inequalities/equalities on Banach spaces are presented and the error bound properties of approximate solutions of finite/infinite systems of inequalities/equalities are also established. Our results extend the corresponding results in [ 3 , 18 , 19 ].

Abstract:An interpolation error is an integral of the squared error of a regression model over a domain of interest. We consider the interpolation error for the case of misspecified Gaussian process regression: used covariance function differs from the true one. We derive the interpolation error for an infinite grid design of experiments. In particular, we show that for Matern 1/2 covariance function poor estimation of parameters only slightly affects the quality of interpolation. Then we proceed to numerical experiments that consider the misspecification for the most common covariance functions including other Matern and squared exponential covariance functions. For them, the quality of estimates of parameters affects the interpolation error.

Our main focus is on the sharpness of the error bounds. We first derive two general lower estimates for the worst-case integration error, and then apply these to establish lower bounds for various quadrature rules. These bounds turn out to either be novel or improve upon existing results, leading to lower bounds that closely match upper bounds for various formulas. Specifically, for the suitably truncated trapezoidal rule, we improve upon general lower bounds on the worst-case error obtained by Sugihara [Numer. Math., 75 (1997), pp. 379–395] and provide exceptionally sharp lower bounds apart from a polynomial factor, and in particular we show that the worst-case error for the trapezoidal rule by Sugihara is not improvable by more than a polynomial factor. Additionally, our research reveals a discrepancy between the error decay of the trapezoidal rule and Sugihara's lower bound for general numerical integration rules, introducing a new open problem. Moreover, the Gauss–Hermite quadrature is proven suboptimal under the decay conditions on integrands we consider, a result not deducible from upper-bound arguments alone. Furthermore, to establish the near-optimality of the suitably scaled Gauss–Legendre and Clenshaw–Curtis quadratures, we generalize a recent result of Trefethen [SIAM Rev., 64 (2022), pp. 132–150] for the upper error bounds in terms of the decay conditions.

Abstract:In this paper we present a new perspective on error analysis of Legendre approximations for differentiable functions. We start by introducing a sequence of Legendre-Gauss-Lobatto polynomials and prove their theoretical properties, such as an explicit and optimal upper bound. We then apply these properties to derive a new and explicit bound for the Legendre coefficients of differentiable functions and establish some explicit and optimal error bounds for Legendre projections in the $L^2$ and $L^{\infty}$ norms. Illustrative examples are provided to demonstrate the sharpness of our new results.

Abstract:For the quadratic Lagrange interpolation function, an algorithm is proposed to provide explicit and verified bound for the interpolation error constant that appears in the interpolation error estimation. The upper bound for the interpolation constant is obtained by solving an eigenvalue problem along with explicit lower bound for its eigenvalues. The lower bound for interpolation constant can be easily obtained by applying the Rayleigh–Ritz method. Numerical computation is performed to demonstrate the sharpness of lower and upper bounds of the interpolation constants over triangles of different shapes. Abstract:We consider interpolation of univariate functions on arbitrary sets of nodes by Gaussian radial basis functions or by exponential functions. We derive closed-form expressions for the interpolation error based on the Harish-Chandra-Itzykson-Zuber formula. We then prove the exponential convergence of interpolation for functions analytic in a sufficiently large domain. As an application, we prove the global exponential convergence of optimization by expected improvement for such functions.

Asymptotic Bounds for Smoothness Parameter Estimates in Gaussian Process Interpolation

Abstract:It is common to model a deterministic response function, such as the output of a computer experiment, as a Gaussian process with a Matérn covariance kernel. The smoothness parameter of a Matérn kernel determines many important properties of the model in the large data limit, including the rate of convergence of the conditional mean to the response function. We prove that the maximum likelihood estimate of the smoothness parameter cannot asymptotically undersmooth the truth when the data are obtained on a fixed bounded subset of $\mathbb{R}^d$. That is, if the data-generating response function has Sobolev smoothness $\nu_0 > d/2$, then the smoothness parameter estimate cannot be asymptotically less than $\nu_0$. The lower bound is sharp. Additionally, we show that maximum likelihood estimation recovers the true smoothness for a class of compactly supported self-similar functions. For cross-validation we prove an asymptotic lower bound $\nu_0 - d/2$, which however is unlikely to be sharp. The results are based on approximation theory in Sobolev spaces and some general theorems that restrict the set of values that the parameter estimators can take.

Abstract:We study the algebraic structure of error formulas for ideal interpolation. We introduce the so-called “normal” error formulas and prove that the lexicographic order reduced Gröbner basis admits such a formula for all ideal interpolations. This formula is a generalization of the “good” error formula proposed by Carl deBoor. Finally, we discuss a Shekhtman’s example and give an explicit form of “normal” error formula for this example.
The Error in Multivariate Linear Extrapolation with Applications to Derivative-Free Optimization

Abstract:We study in this paper the function approximation error of multivariate linear extrapolation. While the sharp error bound of linear interpolation already exists in the literature, linear extrapolation is used far more often in applications such as derivative-free optimization, and its error is not well-studied. A method to numerically compute the sharp error bound is introduced, and several analytical bounds are presented along with the conditions under which they are sharp. The approximation error achievable by quadratic functions and the error bound for the bivariate case are analyzed in depth. Additionally, we provide the convergence theories regarding the simplex derivative-free optimization method as a demonstration of the utility of the derived bounds. All results are under the assumptions that the function being interpolated has Lipschitz continuous gradient and is interpolated on an affinely independent sample set.
