Abstract:We propose a general extended coherent state approach to the qubit (orfermion) and multi-mode boson coupling systems. The application to thespin-boson model with the discretization of a bosonic bath with arbitrarycontinuous spectral density is described in detail, and very accurate solutionscan be obtained. The quantum phase transition in the nontrivial sub-Ohmic casecan be located by the fidelity and the order-parameter critical exponents forthe bath exponents s<1/2 can be correctly given by the fidelitysusceptibility, demonstrating the strength of the approach.

Abstract:A variational approach based on the multi-coherent-state ansatz with asymmetric parameters is employed to study the ground state of the spin-boson model. Without any artificial approximations except for the finite number of the coherent states, we find the robust Gaussian critical behavior in the whole sub-Ohmic bath regime. The converged critical coupling strength can be estimated with the 1/N scaling, where N is the number of the coherent states. It is strongly demonstrated the breakdown of the well-known quantum-to-classical mapping for 1/2<s<1. In addition, the entanglement entropy displays more steep jump around the critical points for the Ohmic bath than the sub-Ohmic bath.

Abstract:The dipole-coupled two-level atoms (qubits) in a single-mode resonant cavity are studied by extended bosonic coherent states. The numerical solution is presented. The first-order quantum phase transitions may occur in finite systems, in contrast to the original Dicke model. This system also exhibits a second-order quantum phase transition from the normal to the superradiant phase, as in the original Dicke model. Finite-size scaling for several observables-such as average fidelity susceptibility, order parameter, and concurrence-is performed for different interatomic interactions. The scaling exponents obtained suggest that interatomic interactions do not change the universality class.

Abstract:A crossover between the Bose Einstein condensation (BEC) and BCS superconducting state is described topologically in the chiral symmetric fermion system with attractive interaction. Using a local Z_2 Berry phase, we found a quantum phase transition between the BEC and BCS phases without accompanying the bulk gap closing.

Abstract:We investigate the finite-temperature superfluid behavior of ultracold atomic Fermi gases in quasi-two-dimensional Lieb lattices with a short-range attractive interaction, using a pairing fluctuation theory within the BCS-BEC crossover framework. We find that the presence of a flat band, along with van Hove singularities, leads to exotic quantum phenomena. As the Fermi level enters the flat band, both the gap and the superfluid transition temperature $T_c$ as a function of interaction change from a conventional exponential behavior into an unusual power law, and the evolution of superfluid densities with temperature also follows a power law even at weak interactions. The quantum geometric effects, manifested by an enhanced effective pair hopping integral, may contribute significantly to both $T_c$ and the superfluidities. As the chemical potential crosses the van Hove singularities in the weak interaction regime, the nature of pairing changes between particle-like and hole-like. A pair density wave state emerges at high densities with a relatively strong interaction strength.

Abstract:We present a theoretical study of the ground state of the BCS-BEC crossover in dilute two-dimensional Fermi gases. While the mean-field theory provides a simple and analytical equation of state, the pressure is equal to that of a noninteracting Fermi gas in the entire BCS-BEC crossover, which is not consistent with the features of a weakly interacting Bose condensate in the BEC limit and a weakly interacting Fermi liquid in the BCS limit. The inadequacy of the two-dimensional mean-field theory indicates that the quantum fluctuations are much more pronounced than those in three dimensions. In this work, we show that the inclusion of the Gaussian quantum fluctuations naturally recovers the above features in both the BEC and the BCS limits. In the BEC limit, the missing logarithmic dependence on the boson chemical potential is recovered by the quantum fluctuations. Near the quantum phase transition from the vacuum to the BEC phase, we compare our equation of state with the known grand canonical equation of state of two-dimensional Bose gases and determine the ratio of the composite boson scattering length a(B) to the fermion scattering length a(2D). We find a(B) similar or equal to 0.56a(2D), in good agreement with the exact four-body calculation. We compare our equation of state in the BCS-BEC crossover with recent results from the quantum Monte Carlo simulations and the experimental measurements and find good agreements.

Abstract:In this work, we study the BCS-BEC crossover and quantum phase transition in a Fermi gas under Rashba spin-orbit coupling close to a Feshbach resonance. By adopting a two-channel model, we take into account of the closed channel molecules, and show that combined with spin-orbit coupling, a finite background scattering in the open channel can lead to two branches of solution for both the two-body and the many-body ground states. The branching of the two-body bound state solution originates from the avoided crossing between bound states in the open and the closed channels, respectively. For the many-body states, we identify a quantum phase transition in the upper branch regardless of the sign of the background scattering length, which is in clear contrast to the case without spin-orbit coupling. For systems with negative background scattering length in particular, we show that the bound state in the open channel, and hence the quantum phase transition in the upper branch, are induced by spin-orbit coupling. We then characterize the critical detuning of the quantum phase transition for both positive and negative background scattering lengths, and demonstrate the optimal parameters for the critical point to be probed experimentally.

Abstract:In this paper we study the BCS Bose-Einstein condensation ~BEC! crossover scenario within the superconducting state, using a T-matrix approach which yields the ground state proposed by Leggett. Here we extend this ground state analysis to finite temperatures T and interpret the resulting physics. We find two types of bosoniclike excitations of the system: long lived, incoherent pair excitations and collective modes of the superconducting order parameter, which have different dynamics. Using a gauge invariant formalism, this paper addresses their contrasting behavior as a function of T and superconducting coupling constant g .A t a more physical level, our paper emphasizes how, at finite T, BCS-BEC approaches introduce an important parameter D pg 5D 2 2D sc into the description of superconductivity. This parameter is governed by the pair excitations and is associated with particle-hole asymmetry effects that are significant for sufficiently largeg .I n the fermionic regime, D pg represents the difference between the square of the excitation gap D 2 and that of the superconducting order parameter D sc . The parameter D pg , which is necessarily zero in the BCS ~mean field! limit increases monotonically with the strength of the attractive interaction g. It follows that there is a significant physical distinction between this BCS-BEC crossover approach ~in which g is the essential variable which determines D pg) and the widely discussed phase fluctuation scenario in which the plasma frequency is the tuning parameter. Finally, we emphasize that in the strong coupling limit, there are important differences between the composite bosons that arise in crossover theories and the usual bosons of the ~interacting! Bose liquid. Because of constraints imposed on the fermionic excitation gap and chemical potential, in crossover theories, the fermionic degrees of freedom can never be fully removed from consideration.

Abstract:Using the Gaussian pair fluctuation theory, we investigate quantum fluctuations of a strongly interacting two-dimensional chiral \textit{p}-wave Fermi superfluid at the transition from a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) to a topologically non-trivial Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) superfluid. Near the topological phase transition at zero chemical potential, $\mu=0$, we observe that quantum fluctuations strongly renormalize the zero-temperature equations of state, sound velocity, pair-breaking velocity, and Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) critical temperature of the Fermi superfluid, all of which can be non-analytic functions of the interaction strength. The indication of non-analyticity is particularly evident in the BKT critical temperature, which also exhibits a pronounced peak near the topological phase transition. Across the transition and towards the BEC limit we find that the system quickly becomes a trivial interacting Bose liquid, whose properties are less dependent on the interparticle interaction. The qualitative behavior of composite bosons in the BEC limit remains to be understood.
BCS-BEC Quantum Phase Transition and Collective Excitations in Two-Dimensional Fermi Gases Withp- Andd-Wave Pairings

Abstract:It is generally believed that the BCS-BEC evolution in fermionic systems with s-wave pairing is a smooth crossover. However, for nonzero orbital-angular-momentum pairing such as p- or d-wave pairing, the system undergoes a quantum phase transition at the point where the chemical potential mu vanishes. In this paper, we study the BCS-BEC quantum phase transition and the collective excitations associated with the order-parameter fluctuations in two-dimensional fermionic systems with p-and d-wave pairings. We show that the quantum phase transition in such systems can be generically traced back to the infrared behavior of the fermionic excitation at mu = 0: E-k similar to k(l), where l = 1,2 is the quantum number of the orbital angular momentum. The nonanalyticity of the thermodynamic quantities is due to the infrared divergence caused by the fermionic excitation at mu = 0. As a result, the evolution of the Anderson-Bogoliubov mode is not smooth: Its velocity is nonanalytical across the quantum phase transition. DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevA.87.013613

Abstract:In a trapped atomic Fermi gas, one can tune continuously via a Feshbach resonance the effective pairing interaction between fermionic atoms from very weak to very strong. As a consequence, the low temperature superfluidity evolves continuously from the BCS type in the weak interaction limit to that of Bose-Einstein condensation in the strong pairing limit, exhibiting a BCS-BEC crossover. In this paper, we review recent experimental progress in atomic Fermi gases which elucidates the nature of the superfluid phase as the interaction is continuously tuned. Of particular interest is the intermediate or crossover regime where the $s$-wave scattering length diverges. We will present an intuitive pairing fluctuation theory, and show that this theory is in quantitative agreement with existing experiments in cold atomic Fermi gases.
Crossover from Integer to Fractional Quantum Hall Effect

Abstract:The parton theory constructs candidate fractional quantum Hall states by decomposing the physical particles into unphysical partons, placing the partons in integer quantum Hall states, and then gluing the partons back into the physical particles. Field theoretical formulations execute the gluing process through the device of emergent gauge fields. Here we study numerically the process of going from the integer quantum Hall effect of two species of fermionic partons to the fractional quantum Hall effect of bosons by introducing an attractive interaction between the fermions of different species and continuously increasing its strength to glue them into bosons. To properly capture the physics in the bulk, we implement this process in a lattice version of the spherical geometry, which allows us to keep the full Hilbert space. Even though the two end-point states are topologically distinct, we find that, for the small system sizes accessible to our study, the energy gap remains open, indicating a crossover between these two states.

Abstract:We review the BCS to Bose Einstein condensation (BEC) crossover scenario which is based on the well known crossover generalization of the BCS ground state wavefunction $\Psi_0$. While this ground state has been summarized extensively in the literature, this Review is devoted to less widely discussed issues: understanding the effects of finite temperature, primarily below $T_c$, in a manner consistent with $\Psi_0$. Our emphasis is on the intersection of two important problems: high $T_c$ superconductivity and superfluidity in ultracold fermionic atomic gases. We address the "pseudogap state" in the copper oxide superconductors from the vantage point of a BCS-BEC crossover scenario, although there is no consensus on the applicability of this scheme to high $T_c$. We argue that it also provides a useful basis for studying atomic gases near the unitary scattering regime; they are most likely in the counterpart pseudogap phase. That is, superconductivity takes place out of a non-Fermi liquid state where preformed, metastable fermion pairs are present at the onset of their Bose condensation. As a microscopic basis for this work, we summarize a variety of $T$-matrix approaches, and assess their theoretical consistency. A close connection with conventional superconducting fluctuation theories is emphasized and exploited.

Abstract:In this paper we present predictions for thermodynamic and transport properties of a BCS to Bose-Einstein crossover theory, below T(c), which satisfies the reasonable constraints that it yields (i) the Leggett ground state and (ii) BCS theory at weak coupling and all temperatures T. The nature of the strong coupling limit is inferred, along with the behavior of the Knight shift, superfluid density, and specific heat. Comparisons with existing data on short coherence length superconductors, such as organic and high T(c) systems, are presented, which provide some support for the present picture.
Distinguishing Quantum Phases through Cusps in Full Counting Statistics

Abstract:Measuring physical observables requires averaging experimental outcomes over numerous identical measurements. The complete distribution function of possible outcomes or its Fourier transform, known as the full counting statistics, provides a more detailed description. This method captures the fundamental quantum fluctuations in many-body systems and has gained significant attention in quantum transport research. In this letter, we propose that cusp singularities in the full counting statistics are a novel tool for distinguishing between ordered and disordered phases. As a specific example, we focus on the superfluid-to-Mott transition in the Bose-Hubbard model and introduce $Z_A(\alpha)=\langle \exp({i\alpha \sum_{i\in A}(\hat{n}_i}-\overline{n}))\rangle $ with $\overline{n}=\langle n_i \rangle$. Through both analytical analysis and numerical simulations, we demonstrate that $\partial_\alpha \log Z_A(\alpha)$ exhibits a discontinuity near $\alpha=\pi$ in the superfluid phase when the subsystem size is sufficiently large, while it remains smooth in the Mott phase. This discontinuity can be interpreted as a first-order transition between different semi-classical configurations of vortices. We anticipate that our discoveries can be readily tested using state-of-the-art ultracold atom and superconducting qubit platforms.

Abstract:We study thermodynamics of a two-species Feshbach-resonant atomic Fermi gas in a periodic potential, focusing in a deep optical potential where a tight binding model is applicable. We show that for more than half-filled band the gas exhibits a reentrant crossover with decreased detuning (increased attractive interaction), from a paired BCS superfluid to a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) of molecules of holes, back to the BCS superfluid, and finally to a conventional BEC of diatomic molecules. This behavior is associated with the non-monotonic dependence of the chemical potential on detuning and the concomitant Cooper-pair/molecular size, larger in the BCS and smaller in the BEC regimes. For a single filled band we find a quantum phase transition from a band insulator to a BCS-BEC superfluid, and map out the corresponding phase diagram.

Abstract:By adopting a T-matrix-based method within the G_0G approximation for the pair susceptibility, we study the effects of the pairing fluctuation on the three-dimensional spin-orbit coupled Fermi gases at finite temperature. The critical temperatures of the superfluid/normal phase transition are determined for three different types of spin-orbit coupling (SOC): (1) the extreme oblate (EO) or Rashba SOC, (2) the extreme prolate (EP) or equal Rashba-Dresselhaus SOC, and (3) the spherical (S) SOC. For EO- and S-type SOC, the SOC dependence of the critical temperature signals a crossover from BCS to BEC state; at strong SOC limit, the critical temperature recover those of ideal BEC of rashbons. The pairing fluctuation induces a pseudogap in the fermionic excitation spectrum in both superfluid and normal phases. We find that, for EO- and S-type SOC, even at weak coupling, sufficiently strong SOC can induce sizable pseudogap. Our research suggests that the spin-orbit coupled Fermi gases may open new means to the study of the pseudogap formation in fermionic systems.

Abstract:The stable Bardeen-Schrieffer-Cooper (BCS) pairing state of a bosonic system has long been sought theoretically and experimentally. Here we study the BCS state of a binary Bose gas with $s$-wave intra-species repulsions and an inter-species attraction in the mean-field-stable region. We find that above the Bose-Einstein-Condensation (BEC) transtion temperature, there is a phase transtion from the normal state to the BCS state due to inter-species pairing. When the temperature decreases, another phase transtion from the BCS state to the mixture state with both atomic BEC and inter-species pairs occurs. As the temperature is further lowered, the mixuture state is taken over by the BEC state. The phase diagram of this system is presented and experimental implications are discussed.
