Abstract:In this review work, we outline a conceptual path that, starting from the numerical investigation of the transition between weak chaos and strong chaos in Hamiltonian systems with many degrees of freedom, comes to highlight how, at the basis of equilibrium phase transitions, there must be major changes in the topology of submanifolds of the phase space of Hamiltonian systems that describe systems that exhibit phase transitions. In fact, the numerical investigation of Hamiltonian flows of a large number of degrees of freedom that undergo a thermodynamic phase transition has revealed peculiar dynamical signatures detected through the energy dependence of the largest Lyapunov exponent, that is, of the degree of chaoticity of the dynamics at the phase transition point. The geometrization of Hamiltonian flows in terms of geodesic flows on suitably defined Riemannian manifolds, used to explain the origin of deterministic chaos, combined with the investigation of the dynamical counterpart of phase transitions unveils peculiar geometrical changes of the mechanical manifolds in correspondence to the peculiar dynamical changes at the phase transition point. Then, it turns out that these peculiar geometrical changes are the effect of deeper topological changes of the configuration space hypersurfaces ∑v=VN−1(v) as well as of the manifolds {Mv=VN−1((−∞,v])}v∈R bounded by the ∑v. In other words, denoting by vc the critical value of the average potential energy density at which the phase transition takes place, the members of the family {∑v}v vc; additionally, the members of the family {Mv}v>vc are not diffeomorphic to those of {Mv}v>vc. The topological theory of the deep origin of phase transitions allows a unifying framework to tackle phase transitions that may or may not be due to a symmetry-breaking phenomenon (that is, with or without an order parameter) and to finite/small N systems.

Abstract:We perform dynamical QCD simulations with $n_f=2$ overlap fermions by hybrid Monte-Carlo method on $6^4$ to $8^3\times 16$ lattices. We study the problem of topological sector changing. A new method is proposed which works without topological sector changes. We use this new method to determine the topological susceptibility at various quark masses.

Abstract:Numerical simulations of lattice quantum field theories whose continuum counterparts possess classical solutions with nontrivial topology face a severe critical slowing down as the continuum limit is approached. Standard Monte Carlo algorithms develop a loss of ergodicity, with the system remaining frozen in configurations with fixed topology. We analyze the problem in a simple toy model, consisting of the path integral formulation of a quantum mechanical particle constrained to move on a circumference. More specifically, we implement for this toy model various techniques which have been proposed to solve or alleviate the problem for more complex systems, like non-Abelian gauge theories, and compare them both in the regime of low temperature and in that of very high temperature. Among the various techniques, we propose an alternative algorithm which completely solves the freezing problem, but unfortunately is specifically tailored for this particular model and not easily exportable to more complex systems.

Abstract:Using analytic and numerical methods, we study a $2d$ Hamiltonian model of interacting particles carrying ferro-magnetically coupled continuous spins which are also locally coupled to their own velocities. This model has been characterised at the mean field level in a parent paper. Here, we first obtain its finite size ground states, as a function of the spin-velocity coupling intensity and system size, with numerical techniques. These ground states, namely a collectively moving polar state of aligned spins, and two non moving states embedded with topological defects, are recovered from the analysis of the continuum limit theory and simple energetic arguments that allow us to predict their domains of existence in the space of control parameters. Next, the finite temperature regime is investigated numerically. In some specific range of the control parameters, the magnetisation presents a maximum at a finite temperature. This peculiar behaviour, akin to an order-by-disorder transition, is explained by the examination of the free energy of the system and the metastability of the states of minimal energy. The robustness of our results is checked against the geometry of the boundary conditions and the dimensionality of space.

Topological Phases and Phase Transitions with Dipolar Symmetry Breaking

Abstract:Systems with dipole moment conservation have been of recent interest, as they realize both novel quantum dynamics and exotic ground state phases. In this work, we study some generic properties of 1-D and 2-D dipole-conserving fermionic models at integer fillings. We find that a dipolar symmetry-breaking phase can result in a mean-field band insulator whose topological indices can strongly affect the low-energy physics of the dipolar Goldstone modes. We study the 2-D topological phase transition of the mean-field ground states in the presence of the Goldstone modes. The critical theory resembles the 2+1d quantum electrodynamics coupled to massless Dirac fermions with some crucial differences and shows a novel quantum critical point featuring a nontrivial dynamical exponent. We also discuss the analogous case of 1-D dipole-conserving models and the role of topological invariants.

Focusing on the solutions of the corresponding Liouville equation, we show that propagation of chaos holds. Moreover, considering monokinetic solutions, we also obtain a rigorous derivation of the hydrodynamic description given by a pressureless Euler-type system.

Annual Review of Statistics and Its Application

Abstract:Markov chain Monte Carlo methods have revolutionized mathematical computation and enabled statistical inference within many previously intractable models. In this context, Hamiltonian dynamics have been proposed as an efficient way of building chains that can explore probability densities efficiently. The method emerges from physics and geometry, and these links have been extensively studied over the past thirty years. The aim of this review is to provide a comprehensive introduction to the geometric tools used in Hamiltonian Monte Carlo at a level accessible to statisticians, machine learners, and other users of the methodology with only a basic understanding of Monte Carlo methods. This will be complemented with some discussion of the most recent advances in the field, which we believe will become increasingly relevant to scientists.

Abstract:In this article, we continue the program started in [2] of exploring an important class of thermodynamic systems from a geometric point of view. The contents of this paper and the one already published in [2] provide a geometrical formulation, which tries to shed more light on the properties of thermodynamic systems without claiming to be a definitive theory. In order to model the time evolution of systems verifying the two laws of thermodynamics, we show that the notion of evolution vector field is adequate to appropriately describe such systems. Our formulation naturally arises from the introduction of a skew-symmetric bracket to which numerical methods based on discrete gradients fit nicely. Moreover, we study the corresponding Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formalism, discussing the fundamental principles from which the equations are derived. An important class of systems that is naturally covered by our formalism are composed thermodynamic systems, which are described by at least two thermal variables and exchange heat between its components.

Emergent Topology in Many-Body Dissipative Quantum Matter

Abstract:The identification, description, and classification of topological features is an engine of discovery and innovation in several fields of physics. This research encompasses a broad variety of systems, from the integer and fractional Chern insulators in condensed matter, to protected states in complex photonic lattices in optics, and the structure of the QCD vacuum. Here, we introduce another playground for topology: the dissipative dynamics of pseudo-Hermitian many-body quantum systems. For that purpose, we study two different systems, the dissipative Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model, and a quantum chaotic dephasing spin chain. For the two different many-body models, we find the same topological features for a wide range of parameters suggesting that they are universal. In the SYK model, we identify four universality classes, related to pseudo-Hermiticity, characterized by a rectangular block representation of the vectorized Liouvillian that is directly related to the existence of an anomalous trace of the unitary operator implementing fermionic exchange. As a consequence of this rectangularization, we identify a topological index $\nu$ that only depends on symmetry. Another distinct consequence of the rectangularization is the observation, for any coupling to the bath, of purely real topological modes in the Liouvillian. The level statistics of these real modes agree with that of the corresponding random matrix ensemble and therefore can be employed to characterize the four topological symmetry classes. In the limit of weak coupling to the bath, topological modes govern the approach to equilibrium, which may enable a direct path for experimental confirmation of topology in dissipative many-body quantum chaotic systems.

Abstract:Using extensive molecular dynamics simulations we explore the fine-grained phase space structure of systems with long-range interactions. We find that if the initial phase space particle distribution has no holes, the final stationary distribution will also contain a compact simply connected region. The microscopic holes created by the filamentation of the initial distribution function are always restricted to the outer regions of the phase space. In general, for complex multilevel distributions it is very difficult to a priori predict the final stationary state without solving the full dynamical evolution. However, we show that for multilevel initial distributions satisfying a generalized virial condition, it is possible to predict the particle distribution in the final stationary state using Casimir invariants of the Vlasov dynamics.

Abstract:It has been shown that contact geometry is the proper framework underlying classical thermodynamics and that thermodynamic fluctuations are captured by an additional metric structure related to Fisher's Information Matrix. In this work we analyze several unaddressed aspects about the application of contact and metric geometry to thermodynamics. We consider here the Thermodynamic Phase Space and start by investigating the role of gauge transformations and Legendre symmetries for metric contact manifolds and their significance in thermodynamics. Then we present a novel mathematical characterization of first order phase transitions as equilibrium processes on the Thermodynamic Phase Space for which the Legendre symmetry is broken. Moreover, we use contact Hamiltonian dynamics to represent thermodynamic processes in a way that resembles the classical Hamiltonian formulation of conservative mechanics and we show that the relevant Hamiltonian coincides with the irreversible entropy production along thermodynamic processes. Therefore, we use such property to give a geometric definition of thermodynamically admissible fluctuations according to the Second Law of thermodynamics. Finally, we show that the length of a curve describing a thermodynamic process measures its entropy production.

Abstract:For a smooth Morse-Smale vector field with Lyapunov constraints (Lyapunov function) one shows how and why the non-triviality of the cohomology, as concluded from its additive structure, detects rest points and the multiplicative structure of the cohomology detects instantons (trajectories between rest points). The same remains true for Lyapunov closed one form, a more general Lyapunov constraint, but in this presentation this fact is discussed only informally. These observations are based on the smooth " manifold with corner structures" of the stable/unstable sets and of the set of trajectories of such vector fields. (This paper is a written version of two talks with the same title given at IMAR Bucharest in November 2023.)
