Abstract:The Edelman-Jamison problem is to characterize those abstract convex geometries that are representable by a set of points in the plane. We show that some natural modification of the Edelman-Jamison problem is equivalent to the well known NP-hard order type problem.

This bears to the finite case proved by P.H.~Edelman and R.E.~Jamison to the greater extent than was thought earlier.

Abstract:We prove that any convex geometry $\mathcal{A}=(U,\mathcal{C})$ on $n$ points and any ideal $\mathcal{I}=(U',\mathcal{C}')$ of $\mathcal{A}$ can be realized as the intersection pattern of an open convex polyhedral cone $K\subseteq {\mathbb R}^n$ with the orthants of ${\mathbb R}^n$. Furthermore, we show that $K$ can be chosen to have at most $m$ facets, where $m$ is the number of critical rooted circuits of $\mathcal{A}$. We also show that any convex geometry of convex dimension $d$ is realizable in ${\mathbb R}^d$ and that any multisimplicial complex (a basic example of an ideal of a convex geometry) of dimension $d$ is realizable in ${\mathbb R}^{2d}$ and that this is best possible. From our results it also follows that distributive lattices of dimension $d$ are realizable in ${\mathbb R}^{d}$ and that median systems are realizable. We leave open %the question whether each median system of dimension $d$ is realizable in ${\mathbb R}^{O(d)}$.

Representation of convex geometries of convex dimension 3 by spheres

Abstract:A convex geometry is a closure system satisfying the anti-exchange property. This paper, following the work of Adaricheva and Bolat (2019) and the Polymath REU (2020), continues to investigate representations of convex geometries with small convex dimension by convex shapes on the plane and in spaces of higher dimension. In particular, we answer in the negative the question raised by Polymath REU (2020): whether every convex geometry of $cdim=3$ is representable by the circles on the plane. We show there are geometries of $cdim=3$ that cannot be represented by spheres in any $\mathbb{R}^k$, and this connects to posets not representable by spheres from the paper of Felsner, Fishburn and Trotter (1999). On the positive side, we use the result of Kincses (2015) to show that every finite poset is an ellipsoid order.

Characterizing graphs with convex and connected configuration spaces

Abstract:We define and study exact, efficient representations of realization spaces Euclidean Distance Constraint Systems (EDCS), which includes Linkages and Frameworks. Each representation corresponds to a choice of Cayley parameters and yields a different parametrized configuration space. Significantly, we give purely graph-theoretic, forbidden minor characterizations that capture (i) the class of graphs that always admit efficient configuration spaces and (ii) the possible choices of representation parameters that yield efficient configuration spaces for a given graph. In addition, our results are tight: we show counterexamples to obvious extensions. This is the first step in a systematic and graded program of combinatorial characterizations of efficient configuration spaces. We discuss several future theoretical and applied research directions. Some of our proofs employ an unusual interplay of (a) classical analytic results related to positive semi-definiteness of Euclidean distance matrices, with (b) recent forbidden minor characterizations and algorithms related to the notion of d-realizability of EDCS. We further introduce a novel type of restricted edge contraction or reduction to a graph minor, a "trick" that we anticipate will be useful in other situations.

Abstract:In this note, we introduce a family of bipartite graphs called path restricted ordered bipartite graphs and present it as an abstract generalization of some well known geometric graphs like unit distance graphs on convex point sets. In the framework of convex point sets, we also focus on a generalized version of Gabriel graphs known as locally Gabriel graphs or $LGGs$. $LGGs$ can also be seen as the generalization of unit distance graphs. The path restricted ordered bipartite graph is also a generalization of $LGGs$. We study some structural properties of the path restricted ordered bipartite graphs and also show that such graphs have the maximum edge complexity of $\theta(n \log n)$. It gives an alternate proof to the well known result that $UDGs$ and $LGGs$ on convex points have $O(n \log n)$ edges.

Liftable Point-Line Configurations: Defining Equations and Irreducibility of Associated Matroid and Circuit Varieties

Abstract:We study point-line configurations through the lens of projective geometry and matroid theory. Our focus is on their realisation spaces, where we introduce the concepts of liftable and quasi-liftable configurations, exploring cases in which an $n$-tuple of collinear points can be lifted to a non-degenerate realisation of a point-line configuration. We show that forest configurations are liftable and characterise the realisation space of liftable configurations as the solution set of certain linear systems of equations. Moreover, we study the Zariski closure of the realisation spaces of liftable and quasi-liftable configurations, known as matroid varieties, and establish their irreducibility. Additionally, we compute an irreducible decomposition for their corresponding circuit varieties. Applying these liftability properties, we present a procedure generate some of the defining equations of the associated matroid varieties. As corollaries, we provide a geometric representation for the defining equations of two specific examples: the quadrilateral set and the $3\times4$ grid. While the polynomials for the latter were previously computed using specialised algorithms tailored for this configuration, the geometric interpretation of these generators was missing. We compute a minimal generating set for the corresponding ideals.

A note on faces of convex sets

Abstract:The faces of a convex set owe their relevance to an interplay between convexity and topology that is systematically studied in the work of Rockafellar. Infinite-dimensional convex sets are excluded from this theory as their relative interiors may be empty. Shirokov and the present author answered this issue by proving that every point in a convex set lies in the relative algebraic interior of the face it generates. This theorem is proved here in a simpler way, connecting ideas scattered throughout the literature. This article summarizes and develops methods for faces and their relative algebraic interiors and applies them to spaces of probability measures.

Abstract:Building sets were introduced in the study of wonderful compactifications of hyperplane arrangement complements and were later generalized to finite meet-semilattices. Convex geometries, the duals of antimatroids, offer a robust combinatorial abstraction of convexity. Supersolvable convex geometries and antimatroids appear in the study of poset closure operators, Coxeter groups, and matroid activities. We prove that the building sets on a finite meet-semilattice form a supersolvable convex geometry. As an application, we demonstrate that building sets and nested set complexes respect certain restrictions of finite meet-semilattices unifying and extending results of several authors.

Happy Ending: An Empty Hexagon in Every Set of 30 Points

Abstract:Satisfiability solving has been used to tackle a range of long-standing open math problems in recent years. We add another success by solving a geometry problem that originated a century ago. In the 1930s, Esther Klein's exploration of unavoidable shapes in planar point sets in general position showed that every set of five points includes four points in convex position. For a long time, it was open if an empty hexagon, i.e., six points in convex position without a point inside, can be avoided. In 2006, Gerken and Nicolás independently proved that the answer is no. We establish the exact bound: Every 30-point set in the plane in general position contains an empty hexagon. Our key contributions include an effective, compact encoding and a search-space partitioning strategy enabling linear-time speedups even when using thousands of cores.

Abstract:Let denote the simplicial complex of -crossing-free subsets of edges in . Here and . Jonsson (2003) proved that [neglecting the short edges that cannot be part of any -crossing], is a shellable sphere of dimension , and conjectured it to be polytopal. The same result and question arose in the work of Knutson and Miller (Adv Math 184(1):161-176, 2004) on subword complexes. Despite considerable effort, the only values of ( k , n ) for which the conjecture is known to hold are (Pilaud and Santos, Eur J Comb. 33(4):632–662, 2012. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.ejc.2011.12.003) and (2, 8) (Bokowski and Pilaud, On symmetric realizations of the simplicial complex of 3-crossing-free sets of diagonals of the octagon. In: Proceedings of the 21st annual Canadian conference on computational geometry, 2009). Using ideas from rigidity theory and choosing points along the moment curve we realize as a polytope for . We also realize it as a simplicial fan for all and arbitrary k , except the pairs (3, 12) and (3, 13). Finally, we also show that for and no choice of points can realize via bar-and-joint rigidity with points along the moment curve or, more generally, via cofactor rigidity with arbitrary points in convex position.

Abstract:Consider a complex projective space with its Fubini-Study metric. We study certain one parameter deformations of this metric on the complement of an arrangement (= finite union of hyperplanes) whose Levi-Civita connection is of Dunkl type. Interesting examples are obtained from the arrangements defined by finite complex reflection groups. We determine a parameter interval for which the metric is locally of Fubini-Study type, flat, or complex-hyperbolic. We find a finite subset of this interval for which we get a complete orbifold or at least a Zariski open subset thereof, and we analyze these cases in some detail (e.g., we determine their orbifold fundamental group). In this set-up, the principal results of Deligne-Mostow on the Lauricella hypergeometric differential equation and work of Barthel-Hirzebruch-Höfer on arrangements in a projective plane appear as special cases. Along the way we produce in a geometric manner all the pairs of complex reflection groups with isomorphic discriminants, thus providing a uniform approach to work of Orlik-Solomon.

Abstract:The classical theory of plane projective geometry is examined constructively, using both synthetic and analytic methods. The topics include Desargues's Theorem, harmonic conjugates, projectivities, involutions, conics, Pascal's Theorem, poles and polars. The axioms used for the synthetic treatment are constructive versions of the traditional axioms. The analytic construction is used to verify the consistency of the axioms; it is based on the usual model in three-dimensional Euclidean space, using only constructive properties of the real numbers. The methods of strict constructivism, following principles put forward by Errett Bishop, reveal the hidden constructive content of a portion of classical geometry. A number of open problems remain for future studies.

Abstract:We consider geodesically convex optimization problems involving distances to a finite set of points $A$ in a CAT(0) cubical complex. Examples include the minimum enclosing ball problem, the weighted mean and median problems, and the feasibility and projection problems for intersecting balls with centers in $A$. We propose a decomposition approach relying on standard Euclidean cutting plane algorithms. The cutting planes are readily derivable from efficient algorithms for computing geodesics in the complex.

Abstract:Weighted cone-volume functionals are introduced for the convex polytopes in $\mathbb{R}^n$. For these functionals, geometric inequalities are proved and the equality conditions are characterized. A variety of corollaries are derived, including extremal properties of the regular polytopes involving the $L_p$ surface area. Some applications to crystallography and quantum theory are also presented.

Abstract:We prove new results of Mattila–Sjölin type, giving lower bounds on Hausdorff dimensions of thin sets ensuring that various k -point configuration sets, generated by elements of E , have nonempty interior. The dimensional thresholds in our previous work (Greenleaf et al., Mathematika 68(1):163–190, 2022) were dictated by associating to a configuration function a family of generalized Radon transforms, and then optimizing -Sobolev estimates for them over all nontrivial bipartite partitions of the k points. In the current work, we extend this by allowing the optimization to be done locally over the configuration's incidence relation, or even microlocally over the conormal bundle of the incidence relation. We use this approach to prove Mattila–Sjölin type results for (i) areas of subtriangles determined by quadrilaterals and pentagons in a set ; (ii) pairs of ratios of distances of 4-tuples in ; and (iii) similarity classes of triangles in , as well as to (iv) give a short proof of Palsson and Romero Acosta's result on congruence classes of triangles in .

Abstract:Inspired by locale theory, pointfree convex geometry was first proposed and studied by Yoshihiro Maruyama. In this paper, we shall continue to his work and investigate the related topics on pointfree convex spaces. Concretely, the following results are obtained: (1) A Hofmann–Lawson-like duality for pointfree convex spaces is established. (2) The -injective objects in the category of -convex spaces are proved precisely to be sober convex spaces, where is the class of strict maps of convex spaces; (3) A convex space X is sober iff there never exists a nontrivial identical embedding such that its dualization is an isomorphism, and a convex space X is iff there never exists a nontrivial identical embedding such that its dualization is an isomorphism. (4) A dual adjunction between the category of continuous lattices with continuous D -homomorphisms and the category of -convex spaces with CP -maps is constructed, which can further induce a dual equivalence between and a subcategory of ; (5) The relationship between the quotients of a continuous lattice L and the convex subspaces of is investigated and the collection of all algebraic quotients of L is proved to be an algebraic join-sub-complete lattice of of all quotients of L , where denote the set of non-bottom compact elements of L . Furthermore, it is shown that is isomorphic to the collection of all sober convex subspaces of ; (6) Several necessary and sufficient conditions for all convex subspaces of to be sober are presented.
