Abstract:We systematically construct an extensive list of realistic mass matrix textures for leptons. For this set of matrices, we discuss the parameter space, and illustrate how these textures could be generated in explicit models from flavor symmetries.

Abstract:Against the conventional picture that the mass matrix forms in the quark sectors will take somewhat different structures from those in the lepton sectors, on the basis of an idea that all the mass matrices of quarks and leptons have the same texture, a universal texture of quark and lepton mass matrices is proposed by assuming a discrete symmetry Z_3 and an extended flavor 2\leftrightarrow 3 symmetry. The texture is described by three parameters (including phase parameter). According to this ansatz, the neutrino masses and mixings are investigated.

Abstract:We perform a systematic analysis of all possible texture zeros in general and symmetric quark mass matrices. Using the values of masses and mixing parameters at the electroweak scale, we identify for both cases the maximally restrictive viable textures. Furthermore, we investigate the predictive power of these textures by applying a numerical predictivity measure recently defined by us. With this measure we find no predictive textures among the viable general quark mass matrices, while in the case of symmetric quark mass matrices most of the 15 maximally restrictive textures are predictive with respect to one or more light quark masses.

Abstract:The mass matrix forms of quarks and leptons are discussed in theory with permutation flavor symmetry. The structure of scalar potential is analyzed in case that electroweak doublet Higgs fields have non-trivial flavor symmetry charges. We find that realistic forms of mass matrices are obtained dynamically in the vacuum of the theory, where some of Higgs bosons have vanishing expectation values which lead to vanishing elements in quark and lepton mass matrices. Mass textures are realized in the true vacuum and their positions are controlled by flavor symmetry. An interesting point is that, due to the flavor group structure, the up and down quark mass matrices are automatically made different in the vacuum, which lead to non-vanishing generation mixing. It is also discussed that flavor symmetry is needed to be broken in order not to have too light scalars. The lower bounds of Higgs masses are derived from the experimental data of flavor-changing rare processes such as the neutral K meson mixing.

Texture-zero patterns of lepton mass matrices from modular symmetry

Abstract:Texture zeros in fermion mass matrices have been widely considered in tackling the Standard Model flavour puzzle. In this work, we perform a systematic analysis of texture zeros in lepton mass matrices in the framework of modular symmetry. Assuming that the lepton fields transform as irreducible representations of T ′, we obtain all possible texture-zero patterns for both charged-lepton and neutrino mass matrices which can be achieved from T ′ modular symmetry. We provide representative models for the phenomenologically-viable textures which can accommodate the experimental data. The predictions for lepton mixing angles, CP-violating phases, light neutrino masses and effective neutrino mass relevant for neutrinoless double beta decay, are discussed. We find that the minimal viable lepton model depends on only 7 real free parameters including the modulus τ (the corresponding charged-lepton mass matrix contains 4 vanishing entries, and the neutrino mass matrix has 1 texture zero). Finally, we study in detail three benchmark models, one for each neutrino mass generation mechanism considered (Dirac, Majorana via Weinberg operator and Majorana via minimal type-I seesaw mechanism).

Modular Symmetry Origin of Texture Zeros and Quark Lepton Unification

Abstract:The even weight modular forms of level $N$ can be arranged into the common irreducible representations of the inhomogeneous finite modular group $\Gamma_N$ and the homogeneous finite modular group $\Gamma'_N$ which is the double covering of $\Gamma_N$, and the odd weight modular forms of level $N$ transform in the new representations of $\Gamma'_N$. We find that the above structure of modular forms can naturally generate texture zeros of the fermion mass matrices if we properly assign the representations and weights of the matter fields under the modular group. We perform a comprehensive analysis for the $\Gamma'_3\cong T'$ modular symmetry. The three generations of left-handed quarks are assumed to transform as a doublet and a singlet of $T'$, we find six possible texture zeros structures of quark mass matrix up to row and column permutations. We present five benchmark quark models which can produce very good fit to the experimental data. These quark models are further extended to include lepton sector, the resulting models can give a unified description of both quark and lepton masses and flavor mixing simultaneously although they contain less number of free parameters than the observables.
Minimally modified Fritzsch texture for quark masses and CKM mixing

Abstract:The Standard Model does not constrain the form of the Yukawa matrices and thus the origin of fermion mass hierarchies and mixing pattern remains puzzling. On the other hand, there are intriguing relations between fermion masses and mixing angles which may point towards specific textures of Yukawa matrices. One of the classic hypothesis is the zero texture proposed by Fritzsch which is, however, excluded by present precision tests since it predicts a too large value of $|V_{cb}|$ as well as a too small value of the ratio $|V_{ub}/V_{cb}|$. In this paper we discuss a minimal modification which still maintains the six zero entries as in the original Fritzsch ansatz. This modification consists in introducing an asymmetry between the 23 and 32 entries in the down-quark Yukawa matrix. We show that this flavour structure can naturally emerge in the context of models with inter-family $SU(3)_H$ symmetry. We present a detailed analysis of this Fritzsch-like texture by testing its predictions and showing that it is perfectly compatible with the present precision data on quark masses and CKM mixing matrix.

Textures of Neutrino Mass Matrix from $S_4$-flavor Symmetry

Abstract:We study a texture of neutrino mass matrix characterized by two constraints consisting of one equality and another antiequality between two elements corresponding to two pairs of the matrix entries. Amidst such textures, we limit our study to three patterns which were realizable assuming an $S_4$-symmetry within type II-seesaw scenario. Three such cases were found and studied: I ($M_{\n 22}=-M_{\n 33}$ \& $M_{\n 11}=+M_{\n 23}$), II ($M_{\n 11}=-M_{\n 33}$ \& $M_{\n 22}=+M_{\n 13}$) and III ($M_{\n 11}=-M_{\n 22}$ \& $M_{\n 33}=+M_{\n 12}$). We specify the role of unphysical phases in the definition of the textures under study which were tested against experimental constraints, and were found to accommodate data with both hierarchies allowed. However, switching off the unphysical phases allows only for inverted hierarchy, except for the texture III which allows also, albeit for a very narrow parameter space region, for normal ordering. We stress that the different phenomenologies when including/excluding unphysical phases stem from the different definitions of the texture one has to adopt in order to make it insensitive to unphysical phases, rather than to any `absent' physical effects of unphysical phases. We present a complete phenomenological analysis of these three textures and justify analytically the resulting correlations. We detail the effect of the unphysical phases in diluting/deforming several correlations, which otherwise would have been ``clear". Finally, we give theoretical realizations within seesaw type II scenarios for such textures.

Abstract:We look for all weak bases that lead to texture zeroes in the quark mass matrices and contain a minimal number of parameters in the framework of the standard model. Since there are ten physical observables, namely, six nonvanishing quark masses, three mixing angles and one CP phase, the maximum number of texture zeroes in both quark sectors is altogether nine. The nine zero entries can only be distributed between the up- and down-quark sectors in matrix pairs with six and three texture zeroes or five and four texture zeroes. In the weak basis where a quark mass matrix is nonsingular and has six zeroes in one sector, we find that there are 54 matrices with three zeroes in the other sector, obtainable through right-handed weak basis transformations. It is also found that all pairs composed of a nonsingular matrix with five zeroes and a nonsingular and nondecoupled matrix with four zeroes simply correspond to a weak basis choice. Without any further assumptions, none of these pairs of up- and down-quark mass matrices has physical content. It is shown that all non-weak-basis pairs of quark mass matrices that contain nine zeroes are not compatible with current experimental data. The particular case of the so-called nearest-neighbour-interaction pattern is also discussed.

Abstract:In an attempt at explaining the observed neutrino mass-squared differences and leptonic mixing, lepton mass matrices with zero textures have been widely studied. In the weak basis where the charged lepton mass matrix is diagonal, various neutrino mass matrices with two zeros have been shown to be consistent with the current experimental data. Using the canonical and Smith normal form methods, we construct the minimal Abelian symmetry realizations of these phenomenological two-zero neutrino textures. The implementation of these symmetries in the context of the seesaw mechanism for Majorana neutrino masses is also discussed.

Abstract:We endeavor to constrain the neutrino mass matrix on the phenomenological ground and procure model-independent textures by emphasizing on the simple linear relationships among the mass matrix elements. These simple textures predict the two Majorana phases. In this regard, two types of parametrization of neutrino mass matrix: general and exponential are employed. We obtain fifty-three predictive neutrino mass matrix textures, out of which twenty-eight are associated with the general parametrization, and the rest belong to the exponential one. Apart from Type-A/P textures, the rest deal with the prediction of a few other oscillation parameters as well. We try to realize the proposed textures in the light of $A_4$, $\Delta\,(27)$ and $T_7$ symmetry groups.

We highlight the role played by the phases, physical and non-physical, and undergo a thorough phenomenological analysis, first (second) when the non-physical (CP) phases are vanishing, then move on to the general case where all phases exist. Finally we present a theoretical realization of the texture based on $A_5$ non-abelian flavor symmetry.

Abstract:We propose two new neutrino mass matrix textures deviating from $\mu-\tau$ symmetry and explore their phenomenological implications. Both textures predict $\theta_{23}$ and $\delta$ within sharp bounds while considering both normal and inverted ordering of neutrino masses. We try to realize these proposed textures within the framework of the seesaw mechanism, in association with the $SU(2)_L \times A_4 \times Z_3$ symmetry group.

Abstract:Phenomenological aspects of non-invertible symmetries, in particular the flavor structure of quarks and leptons, are studied. We start with a $\mathbb{Z}_M$ discrete symmetry and gauge $\mathbb{Z}_2$ so as to obtain a non-invertible symmetry. We study which Yukawa textures can be derived from the non-invertible symmetries. Various textures can be realized and some of them cannot be realized by a conventional symmetry. For example, the nearest neighbor interaction texture as well as other interesting textures of quarks and leptons are obtained.

Abstract:We study the implications of the simultaneous existence of a texture zero and a vanishing minor in the neutrino mass matrix. There are thirty six possible texture structures of this type, twenty one of which reduce to two texture zero cases which have, already, been extensively studied. Of the remaining fifteen textures only six are allowed by the current data. We examine the phenomenological implications of the allowed texture structures for Majorana type CP-violating phases, 1-3 mixing angle and Dirac type CP-violating phase. All these possible textures can be generated through the seesaw mechanism and realized in the framework of discrete abelian flavor symmetry. We present the symmetry realization of these texture structures.

Abstract:In present paper we construct classical and quantum models of an extended charged particle. One shows that consecutive modelling can be based on the hollow thin-wall charged texture (in the hydrodynamical approach of a perfect fluid) which acquires gravitational mass due to Einstein-Maxwell interaction. We demonstrate that such a model has equilibrium states at the radius equal to the established classical radius of a charged particle. Also we consider quantum aspects of the theory and obtain the (internal) Dirac sea conception in a natural way. Besides, the phenomenological unification on the mass level of the two families of elementary particles, charged pions and electrons and positrons, evidently arises as the effect induced by classical and quantum gravity prior to Standard Model. Finally, in the cosmological connection our model proposes the answer on the important question, what are the real sources of texture matter. Besides, the texture hypothesis means that in the early Universe the topological texture foam phase existed before the lepton-hadron one.

Exploring Exponential Parametrization of Neutrino Mass Matrix

Abstract:We explore the exponential parameterization of the Majorana neutrino mass matrix texture. In this regard, the elements of the mass matrix are expressed in terms of their absolute values and arguments. We propose a neutrino mass matrix texture that highlights four correlations among its elements. The mixing scheme obtained from the proposed texture is consistent with experimental observations. In addition, we derive the proposed texture from the $SU(2)_L \times U(1)_Y \times A_4 \times Z_{10}$ group in the light of the seesaw mechanism.

Abstract:It has been recognized recently that there is a remarkable empirical relation between lepton and quark mixing angles, theta_{12} + theta_C \approx pi/4. If not accidental, it should testify for yet uncovered new relationship between the fundamental twin particles in nature which only differ in their ability to feel color. The nontrivial structure which is presumed to exist behind the empirical relation is named as ``quark-lepton complementarity''. In this talk, I review the idea at the kind request of the organizer. Starting from pedagogical discussions of bimaximal mixing, which likely to be involved in the whole picture, I try to give a flavor of the new field which is still in rapid development. Toward the more balanced knowledges of flavor mixing in lepton and quark sectors, I describe a promising way for precision measurement of theta_{12} which utilizes solar and reactor neutrinos.

Abstract:In this talk, I will present the status of lepton flavor physics in composite Higgs models with partial compositeness in the light of recent data in the lepton sector. I will consider anarchic flavor setups, scenarios with flavor symmetries, and minimal incarnations of the see-saw mechanism that naturally predict non-negligible lepton compositeness. The focus will be on lepton flavor violating processes, dipole moments, and on probes of lepton flavor universality, all providing stringent tests of partial compositeness. The expected size of effects in the different approaches to lepton flavor and the corresponding constraints will be discussed, including "UV complete", effective, and holographic descriptions.

Abstract:We use the permutational symmetry group $S_{3}$ as a symmetry of flavour, which leads to a unified treatment of masses and mixings of the quarks and leptons. In this framework all mass matrices of the fermions in the theory have the same form with four texture zeroes of class of I. Also, with the help of six elements of real matrix representation of $S_ {3}$ as transformation matrices of similarity classes, we make a classification of the sets of mass matrices with texture zeroes in equivalence classes. This classification reduce the number of phenomenologically viable textures for the non-singulars mass matrices of $3\times3$, from thirty three down to only eleven independent sets of matrices. Each of these sets of matrices has exactly the same physical content.
