Abstract:Simultaneous measurements of giant pulses from the Crab pulsar were taken at two widely spaced frequencies using the real-time detection of a giant pulse at 1.4 GHz at the Very Large Array to trigger the observation of that same pulse at 0.6 GHz at a 25-m telescope in Green Bank, WV. Interstellar dispersion of the signals provided the necessary time to communicate the trigger across the country via the Internet. About 70% of the pulses are seen at both 1.4 GHz and 0.6 GHz, implying an emission mechanism bandwidth of at least 0.8 GHz at 1 GHz for pulse structure on time scales of one to ten microseconds. The arrival times at both frequencies display a jitter of 100 microseconds within the window defined by the average main pulse profile and are tightly correlated. This tight correlation places limits on both the emission mechanism and on frequency dependent propagation within the magnetosphere. At 1.4 GHz the giant pulses are resolved into several, closely spaced components. Simultaneous observations at 1.4 GHz and 4.9 GHz show that the component splitting is frequency independent. We conclude that the multiplicity of components is intrinsic to the emission from the pulsar, and reject the hypothesis that this is the result of multiple imaging as the signal propagates through the perturbed thermal plasma in the surrounding nebula. At both 1.4 GHz and 0.6 GHz the pulses are characterized by a fast rise time and an exponential decay time which are correlated. The pulse broadening with its exponential decay form is most likely the result of multipath propagation in intervening ionized gas.

Abstract:The Crab pulsar has striking radio emission properties, with the two dominant pulse components—the main pulse and the interpulse—consisting entirely of giant pulses. The emission is scattered in both the Crab Nebula and the interstellar medium, causing multipath propagation and thus scintillation. We study the scintillation of the Crab's giant pulses using phased Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope data at 1668 MHz. We find that giant pulse spectra correlate at only ~2%, much lower than the one-third correlation expected from a randomized signal imparted with the same impulse response function. In addition, we find that the main pulse and the interpulse appear to scintillate differently; the 2D cross-correlation of scintillation between the interpulse and main pulse has a lower amplitude and is wider in time and frequency delay than the 2D autocorrelation of the main pulses. These lines of evidence suggest that the giant pulse emission regions are extended, and that the main pulse and interpulse arise in physically distinct regions that are resolved by the scattering screen. Assuming the scattering takes place in the nebular filaments, the emission regions are of order a light-cylinder radius, as projected on the sky. With further very long baseline interferometry and multifrequency data, it may be possible to measure the distance to the scattering screens, the size of giant pulse emission regions, and the physical separation between the pulse components.
Scattering features and variability of the Crab pulsar

Abstract:We report on Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope observations of the Crab pulsar at 350 MHz from 2012 November 24 until 2015 June 21. During this period we consistently observe variations in the pulse profile of the Crab. Both variations in the scattering width of the pulse profile as well as delayed copies, also known as echoes, are seen regularly. These observations support the classification of two types of echoes: those that follow the truncated exponential shape expected for the thin-screen scattering approximation, and echoes that show a smoother, more Gaussian shape. During a sequence of high-cadence observations in 2015, we find that these non-exponential echoes evolve in time by approaching the main pulse and interpulse in phase, overlapping the main pulse and interpulse, and later receding. We find a pulse scatter-broadening time scale, $\tau$, scaling with frequency as $\nu^{\alpha}$, with $\alpha=-3.9\pm0.5$, which is consistent with expected values for thin-screen scattering models

A Low Frequency Survey of Giant Pulses from the Crab Pulsar

Abstract:We present a large survey of giant pulses from the Crab Pulsar as observed with the first station of the Long Wavelength Array. Automated methods for detecting giant pulses at low frequencies where scattering becomes prevalent are also explored. More than 1400 pulses were detected across four frequency bands between 20 - 84 MHz over a seven month period beginning in 2013, with additional followup observations in late 2014 and early 2015. A handful of these pulses were detected simultaneously across all four frequency bands. We examine pulse characteristics, including pulse broadening and power law indices for amplitude distributions. We find that the flux density increases toward shorter wavelengths, consistent with a spectral turnover at 100 MHz. Our observations uniquely span multiple scattering epochs, manifesting as a notable trend in the number of detections per observation. These results are characteristic of the variable interface between the synchrotron nebula and the surrounding interstellar medium.

Abstract:The equations that govern the temporal evolution of two photons in the Schr{ö}dinger picture are derived, taking into account the effects of loss, group-velocity dispersion, temporal phase modulation, linear coupling among different optical modes, and four-wave mixing. Inspired by the formalism, we propose the concept of quantum temporal imaging, which uses dispersive elements and temporal phase modulators to manipulate the temporal correlation of two entangled photons. We also present the exact solution of a two-photon vector soliton, in order to demonstrate the ease of use and intuitiveness of the proposed formulation.

Abstract:In separate series of observations of the Crab pulsar, pulse broadening due to scattering was measured at 111 MHz, and variations of dispersion due to pulse delay were measured at higher radio frequencies. In a remarkable event lasting 200 days a large increase occurred in both parameters and with similar time signatures. The increases in scattering and dispersion measure observed over the 200 days MJD 53 950-54 150 are attributable to the effects of an ionised cloud or filament crossing the line of sight. The cloud would be m across, with electron density cm-3. The increased scattering might originate within the cloud itself, or the moving filament might induce turbulence in a separate higher density cloud in the line of sight.

The Brightest Pulses in the Universe: Multifrequency Observations of the Crab Pulsar's Giant Pulses

Abstract:We analyze the Crab pulsar at ten frequencies from 0.43 to 8.8 GHz using data obtained at the Arecibo Observatory. Giant pulses occur only in the main and interpulse components manifest from radio frequencies to gamma-ray energies. Individual giant pulses reach brightness temperatures of at least $10^{32}$K in our data, which do not resolve the narrowest pulses, and are known to reach $10^{37}$K in nanosecond-resolution observations (Hankins et al 2003). Giant pulses are therefore the brightest known in the observable universe and represent an important milestone for theories of the pulsar emission mechanism to explain. Their short durations allow them to serve as especially sensitive probes of the Crab Nebula and the interstellar medium. We analyze frequency structure in individual giant pulses using a scintillating, amplitude-modulated,polarized shot-noise model. The frequency structure associated with multipath propagation decorrelates on a time scale of 25 sec at 1.5 GHz, which requires that multipath propagation be strongly influenced by material within the Crab Nebula. Additional frequency structure decorrelates faster than one spin period, as would be expected from the shot-noise pattern of nanosecond duration pulses emitted by the pulsar. Taking into account the Crab pulsar's locality inside a bright supernova remnant, we conclude that the brightest pulse in a typical 1-hour observation would be most easily detectable in our lowest frequency band (0.43 GHz) to a distance of 1.6 Mpc. We also discuss the detection of such pulses using future instruments such as LOFAR and the SKA.

Crab Giant Pulses at Low Frequencies

Abstract:We report observations of the Crab pulsar at frequencies in the range of 110-180 MHz. The combination of coherent dedispersion and the narrow synthesised beam of the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope resulted in a sensitive observation. Our improved sensitivity and resolution allow us to confirm the presence of a precursor to the interpulse at these frequencies. We also detected more than 1000 giant pulses and find that the interpulse precursor component shows no giant pulse emission. Therefore, we attribute it to a similar emission source as the precursor to the mainpulse. Together these precursors might be the normal emission seen from the majority of radio pulsars. From the dispersion-free giant pulses, we find that the emission rate is similar to 10-20 x 10(-3) s(-1) and the scatter timescale in the range of similar to 1.5-5.6 ms. We further find that the radio flux of the pulsar is 6-11 Jy in this frequency range.

Abstract:The high sensitivity and wide frequency coverage of the Murchison Widefield Array allow for the measurement of the spectral scaling of the pulsar scattering timescale, $\alpha$, from a single observation. Here we present three case studies targeted at bright, strongly scattered pulsars J0534+2200 (the Crab pulsar), J0835-4510 (the Vela pulsar) and J0742-2822. We measure the scattering spectral indices to be $-3.8\pm0.2$, $-4.0\pm1.5$, and $-2.5\pm0.6$ for the Crab, Vela, and J0742-2822, respectively. We find that the scattered profiles of both Vela and J0742-2822 are best described by a thin screen model where the Gum Nebula likely contributes most of the observed scattering delay. For the Crab pulsar we see characteristically different pulse shapes compared to higher frequencies, for which none of the scattering screen models we explore are found to be optimal. The presence of a finite inner scale to the turbulence can possibly explain some of the discrepancies.

Abstract:A small number of pulsars are known to emit giant pulses, single pulses much brighter than average. Among these is PSR J0534+2200, also known as the Crab pulsar, a young pulsar with high giant pulse rates. Long-term monitoring of the Crab pulsar presents an excellent opportunity to perform statistical studies of its giant pulses and the processes affecting them, potentially providing insight into the behavior of other neutron stars that emit bright single pulses. Here, we present an analysis of a set of 24,985 Crab giant pulses obtained from 88 hours of daily observations at a center frequency of 1.55 GHz by the 20-meter telescope at the Green Bank Observatory, spread over 461 days. We study the effects of refractive scintillation at higher frequencies than previous studies and compare methods of correcting for this effect. We also search for deterministic patterns seen in other single-pulse sources, possible periodicities seen in several rotating radio transients and fast radio bursts, and clustering of giant pulses like that seen in the repeating fast radio burst FRB121102.

Abstract:We present a study of shape, spectra and polarization properties of giant pulses (GPs) from the Crab pulsar at the very high frequencies of 8.5 and 15.1 GHz. Studies at 15.1 GHz were performed for the first time. Observations were conducted with the 100-m radio telescope in Effelsberg in Oct-Nov 2007 at the frequencies of 8.5 and 15.1 GHz as part of an extensive campaign of multi-station multi-frequency observations of the Crab pulsar. A selection of the strongest pulses was recorded with a new data acquisition system, based on a fast digital oscilloscope, providing nanosecond time resolution in two polarizations in a bandwidth of about 500 MHz. We analyzed the pulse shapes, polarisation and dynamic spectra of GPs as well as the cross-correlations between their LHC and RHC signals. No events were detected outside main pulse and interpulse windows. GP properties were found to be very different for GPs emitted at longitudes of the main pulse and the interpulse. Cross-correlations of the LHC and RHC signals show regular patterns in the frequency domain for the main pulse, but these are missing for the interpulse GPs. We consider consequences of application of the rotating vector model to explain the apparent smooth variation in the position angle of linear polarization for main pulse GPs. We also introduce a new scenario of GP generation as a direct consequence of the polar cap discharge. We find further evidence for strong nano-shot discharges in the magnetosphere of the Crab pulsar. The repetitive frequency spectrum seen in GPs at the main pulse phase is interpreted as a diffraction pattern of regular structures in the emission region. The interpulse GPs however have a spectrum that resembles that of amplitude modulated noise. Propagation effects may be the cause of the differences.

High Sensitivity Beamformed Observations of the Crab Pulsar's Radio Emission

Abstract:We analyzed four epochs of beamformed EVN data of the Crab Pulsar at 1658.49 MHz. With the high sensitivity resulting from resolving out the Crab Nebula, we are able to detect even the faint high-frequency components in the folded profile. We also detect a total of 65951 giant pulses, which we use to investigate the rates, fluence, phase, and arrival time distributions. We find that for the main pulse component, our giant pulses represent about 80% of the total flux. This suggests we have a nearly complete giant pulse energy distribution, although it is not obvious how the observed distribution could be extended to cover the remaining 20% of the flux without invoking large numbers of faint bursts for every rotation. Looking at the difference in arrival time between subsequent bursts in single rotations, we confirm that the likelihood of finding giant pulses close to each other is increased beyond that expected for randomly occurring bursts - some giant pulses consist of causally related microbursts, with typical separations of $\sim\!30{\rm\;\mu s}$ - but also find evidence that at separations $\gtrsim\!100{\rm\;\mu s}$ the likelihood of finding another giant pulse is suppressed. In addition, our high sensitivity enabled us to detect weak echo features in the brightest pulses (at $\sim\!0.4\%$ of the peak giant pulse flux), which are delayed by up to $\sim\!300{\rm\;\mu s}$.

Radio Emission Physics in the Crab Pulsar

Abstract:We review our high-time-resolution radio observations of the Crab pulsar and compare our data to a variety of models for the emission physics. The Main Pulse and the Low-Frequency Interpulse come from regions somewhere in the high-altitude emission zones (caustics) that also produce pulsed X-ray and gamma-ray emission. Although no emission model can fully explain these two components, the most likely models suggest they arise from a combination of beam-driven instabilities, coherent charge bunching and strong electromagnetic turbulence. Because the radio power fluctuates on a wide range of timescales, we know the emission zones are patchy and dynamic. It is tempting to invoke unsteady pair creation in high-altitude gaps as source of the variability, but current pair cascade models cannot explain the densities required by any of the likely models. It is harder to account for the mysterious High-Frequency Interpulse. We understand neither its origin within the magnetosphere nor the striking emission bands in its dynamic spectrum. The most promising models are based on analogies with solar zebra bands, but they require unusual plasma structures which are not part of our standard picture of the magnetosphere. We argue that radio observations can reveal much about the upper magnetosphere, but work is required before the models can address all of the data.

Giant Radio Pulses from the Crab Pulsar

Abstract:Individual giant radio pulses (GRPs) from the Crab pulsar last only a few microseconds. However, during that time they rank among the brightest objects in the radio sky reaching peak flux densities of up to 1500 Jy even at high radio frequencies. Our observations show that GRPs can be found in all phases of ordinary radio emission including the two high frequency components (HFCs) visible only between 5 and 9 GHz (Moffett & Hankins, 1996). This leads us to believe that there is no difference in the emission mechanism of the main pulse (MP), inter pulse (IP) and HFCs. High resolution dynamic spectra from our recent observations of giant pulses with the Effelsberg telescope at a center frequency of 8.35 GHz show distinct spectral maxima within our observational bandwidth of 500 MHz for individual pulses. Their narrow band components appear to be brighter at higher frequencies (8.6 GHz) than at lower ones (8.1 GHz). Moreover, there is an evidence for spectral evolution within and between those structures. High frequency features occur earlier than low frequency ones. Strong plasma turbulence might be a feasible mechanism for the creation of the high energy densities of ~6.7 x 10^4 erg cm^-3 and brightness temperatures of 10^31 K.

The Crab Pulsar at Centimeter Wavelengths: I. Ensemble Characteristics

Abstract:We have observed the pulsar in the Crab Nebula at high radio frequencies and high time resolution. We present continuously sampled data at 640-ns time resolution, and individual bright pulses recorded at down to 0.25-ns time resolution. Combining our new data with previous data from our group and from the literature shows the dramatic changes in the pulsar's radio emission between low and high radio frequencies. Below about 5 GHz the mean profile is dominated by the bright Main Pulse and Low-Frequency Interpulse. Everything changes, however, above about 5 GHz; the Main Pulse disappears, the mean profile of the Crab pulsar is dominated by the High-Frequency Interpulse (which is quite different from its low-frequency counterpart) and the two High-Frequency Components. We present detailed observational characteristics of these different components which future models of the pulsar's magnetosphere must explain.

Abstract:Using archival data from the 42-foot telescope at the Jodrell Bank Observatory, we produce daily stacks of aligned giant pulses for the Crab pulsar, to study changes to the daily profiles between 2012 April and 2016 December. From these, we identify echoes, where intervening material away from the line of sight causes pulsed emission to be redirected toward the observer, with delay corresponding to the increased distance of travel, resulting in additional profile components. These observations show that such echoes may be far more common than implied by the previous rate of detections. All the observed echoes are consistent with approaching zero delay at their closest approach to the normal giant pulse emission. This indicates that the structures responsible for producing these events must be highly anisotropic, with typical lengths greater than ∼4 au, typical widths on the sky of ∼0.1 au, and typical depths of ∼5 au, given the previously observed electron densities of the nebular filaments, on the order of 1000 cm −3 . This suggests that these inhomogeneities are likely to be offshoot substructure from the larger nebular filaments of the Crab nebula.

Abstract:In October 1997 daily monitoring observations of the Crab pulsar at 327 MHz and 610 MHz with an 85ft telescope in Green Bank, WV showed a jump in the dispersion by 0.12 cm^{-3} pc. Pulses were seen simultaneously at both old and new dispersions for a period of days. In the months before this event faint ghost emission, a replica of the pulse, was detected with a nearly frequency independent delay that quadratically diminished to zero. There was also a curious shift in the phase, a slowdown, at all frequencies at the time of the dispersion jump. I attribute most of these phenomena to the perturbing optics of a plasma prism that is located in the filamentary interface between the synchrotron nebula and the supernova ejecta and which crosses the line of sight over a period of months. The required density, scale length and velocity are reasonable given detailed HST and previous observations of these filaments.
