Abstract:Chirality is ubiquitous in nature across all length scales, with major implications spanning fields from biology, chemistry and physics to materials science. How chirality propagates from nanoscale building blocks to meso- and macroscopic helical structures remains an open issue. Here, working with a canonical system of filamentous viruses, we demonstrate that their self-assembly into chiral liquid crystal phases quantitatively results from the interplay between two main mechanisms of chirality transfer: electrostatic interactions from the helical charge patterns on the virus surface, and fluctuation-based helical deformations leading to viral backbone helicity. Our experimental and theoretical approach provides a comprehensive framework for deciphering how chirality is hierarchically and quantitatively propagated across spatial scales. Our work highlights the ways in which supramolecular helicity may arise from subtle chiral contributions of opposite handedness that act either cooperatively or competitively, thus accounting for the multiplicity of chiral behaviours observed for nearly identical molecular systems.

Abstract:An off-lattice Monte Carlo method is used to study the conformations of semiflexible polymer chains confined in spheres. The local coil-helix transition is observed for the chains with moderate rigidity confined in small spheres, and the helical structures can be identified by the combination of the dihedral angles and the correlation functions between the tangent vectors. Through calculating the average number of monomers per helix turn, the average number of helix turns per chain, and the ratio of average helix pitch to average helix radius, we find that the radius of the confining sphere and the bending energy are the key factors in the formation of helical structures. This study can help us understand how DNA chains fold in confined spaces, such as viruses and cells.

Abstract:Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films can homogeneously align the nematic liquid crystal. Atomic force microscopy of PMMA LB films, reveals a helical chain structure, based on which the alignment mechanism is discussed. However, no capability of alignment could be observed on rubbed PMMA films, which is probably due to the easy fracture of PMMA chains under rubbing.

Abstract:Twisted nematic liquid crystals were uniformly aligned on Phthalocyanine (Pc)-derived Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films. By scanning tunneling microscopy imaging, it was found that the Pc-LB film has a well-ordered in-plane column-like structure oriented in the dipping direction, based on which the alignment mechanisms are discussed.

Abstract:Nematic and smectic liquid crystals are homogeneously aligned on polyimide Langmuir–Blodgett films prepared by horizontal lifting on a novel Langmuir trough using a flowing subphase. Atomic force microscopy observation of the polymer monolayer deposited on graphite reveals that the polymer chains are elongated and aligned in the flow direction. Thus the alignment may act through the orientation of polyimide molecules.

Abstract:Composites of DNA origami nanostructures dispersed in a lyotropic chromonic liquid crystal are studied by polarizing optical microscopy. The homogeneous aqueous dispersions can be uniformly aligned by confinement between two glass substrates, either parallel to the substrates owing to uniaxial rubbing or perpendicular to the substrates using ozonized graphene layers. These opportunities of uniform alignment may pave the way for tailored anisometric plasmonic DNA nanostructures to photonic materials. In addition, a decorated texture with nonuniform orientation is observed on substrates coated with pristine graphene. When the water is allowed to evaporate slowly, microscopic crystal needles appear, which are aligned along the local orientation of the director. This decoration method can be used for studying the local orientational order and the defects in chromonic liquid crystals.

Abstract:We study the liquid crystalline phase behavior of a concentrated suspension of helical flagella isolated from {\it Salmonella typhimurium}. Flagella are prepared with different polymorphic states, some of which have a pronounced helical character while others assume a rod-like shape. We show that the static phase behavior and dynamics of chiral helices are very different when compared to simpler achiral hard rods. With increasing concentration, helical flagella undergo an entropy driven first order phase transition to a liquid crystalline state having a novel chiral symmetry.

Abstract:In some liquid crystal (LC) mixtures of bent-core host molecules that form helical nanofilaments (HNFs) and chiral, rod-shaped molecular guests, the spontaneous chirality of the HNFs is not influenced by the guest handedness. In other mixtures, the filaments become homochiral, responding to the handedness of the guest. We show that the important distinction between these two behaviours is the solubility of the guest material in the HNF phase. In our experiments, chiral LC mesogens doped into the HNF phase result in an enantiomeric imbalance and sometimes change the phase sequence on cooling from the isotropic melt.[GRAPHICS].

Abstract:In the formation of chiral crystals, the tendency for twist in the orientation of neighboring molecules is incompatible with ordering into a lattice: Twist is expelled from planar layers at the expense of local strain. We report the ordered state of a neat material in which a local chiral structure is expressed as twisted layers, a state made possible by spatial limitation of layering to a periodic array of nanoscale filaments. Although made of achiral molecules, the layers in these filaments are twisted and rigorously homochiral—a broken symmetry. The precise structural definition achieved in filament self-assembly enables collective organization into arrays in which an additional broken symmetry—the appearance of macroscopic coherence of the filament twist—produces a liquid crystal phase of helically precessing layers.
Chiral edge fluctuations of colloidal membranes

Abstract:We study edge fluctuations of a flat colloidal membrane comprised of a monolayer of aligned filamentous viruses. Experiments reveal that a peak in the spectrum of the in-plane edge fluctuations arises for sufficiently strong virus chirality. Accounting for internal liquid crystalline degrees of freedom by the length, curvature, and geodesic torsion of the edge, we calculate the spectrum of the edge fluctuations. The theory quantitatively describes the experimental data, demonstrating that chirality couples in-plane and out-of-plane edge fluctuations to produce the peak.

Abstract:Detecting the chirality of material is very important in material science, chemistry, pharmacology, and biomaterial science because it is useful for identifying and discarding unintended side effects. Here, directly visualized is the optical activity of chiral samples using an orientation‐controlled helical nanofilament (HNF, B4) liquid crystal (LC) phase made of achiral bent‐shaped molecules. The vertical orientation of the HNFs is induced by shining unpolarized UV light. Right‐ or left‐handed domains of the HNFs are formed because of the lack of molecular chirality, each single‐handed domain is large enough to be seen with the naked eye, up to ≈several mm2. The periodic arrays of aligned HNFs reflect a specific color, here green, due to the Bragg reflection. Such a reflector enables an easy detection of optical activity of a sample placed on it. The device is tested with naturally chiral substances, like fructose and glucose, which exhibit opposite sense of optical activity, as well as with structurally chiral nematic LC phase and reveals high sensitivity of a detection.

Abstract:Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) are bio-based nanoparticles that, under the right conditions, self-align into chiral nematic liquid crystals with a helical pitch. In this work, we exploit the inherent confocal effect of second-harmonic generation (SHG) microscopy to acquire highly resolved three-dimensional (3D) images of the chiral nematic phase of CNCs in a label-free manner. An in-depth analysis revealed a direct link between the observed variations in SHG intensity and the pitch. The highly contrasted 3D images provided unprecedented detail into liquid crystal's native structure. Local alignment, morphology, as well as the presence of defects are readily revealed, and a provisional framework relating the SHG response to the orientational distribution of CNC nanorods within the liquid crystal structure is presented. This paper illustrates the numerous benefits of using SHG microscopy for visualizing CNC chiral nematic systems directly in the suspension-liquid phase and paves the road for using SHG microscopy to characterize other types of aligned CNC structures, in wet and dry states.

Abstract:Molecular chirality leads to a wonderful variety of equilibrium structures, from the simple cholesteric phase to the twist-grain-boundary phases, and it is responsible for interesting and technologically important materials like ferroelectric liquid crystals. This paper will review some recent advances in our understanding of the connection between the chiral geometry of individual molecules and the important phenomenological parameters that determine macroscopic chiral structure. It will then consider chiral structure in columnar systems and propose a new equilibrium phase consisting of a regular lattice of twisted ropes.

Reversal of Helicoidal Twist Handedness Near Point Defects of Confined Chiral Liquid Crystals

Abstract:Handedness of the director twist in cholesteric liquid crystals is commonly assumed to be the same throughout the medium, determined solely by the chirality of constituent molecules or chiral additives, albeit distortions of the ground-state helicoidal configuration often arise due to the effects of confinement and external fields. We directly probe the twist directionality of liquid crystal director structures through experimental three-dimensional imaging and numerical minimization of the elastic free energy and show that spatially localized regions of handedness opposite to that of the chiral liquid crystal ground state can arise in the proximity of twisted-soliton-bound topological point defects. In chiral nematic liquid crystal confined to a film that has a thickness less than the cholesteric pitch and perpendicular surface boundary conditions, twisted solitonic structures embedded in a uniform unwound far-field background with chirality-matched handedness locally relieve confinement-imposed frustration and tend to be accompanied by point defects and smaller geometry-required energetically costly regions of opposite twist handedness. We also describe a new spatially localized structure, dubbed a "twistion", in which a twisted solitonic three-dimensional director configuration is accompanied by four point defects. We discuss how our findings may impinge on the stability of localized particle-like director field configurations in chiral and non-chiral liquid crystals.

Director Deformations, Geometric Frustration, and Modulated Phases in Liquid Crystals

Abstract:This article analyzes modulated phases in liquid crystals, from the long-established cholesteric and blue phases to the recently discovered twist-bend, splay-bend, and splay nematic phases, as well as the twist-grain-boundary (TGB) and helical nanofilament variations on smectic phases. The analysis uses the concept of four fundamental modes of director deformation: twist, bend, splay, and a fourth mode related to saddle-splay. Each mode is coupled to a specific type of molecular order: chirality, polarization perpendicular and parallel to the director, and octupolar order. When the liquid crystal develops one type of spontaneous order, the ideal local structure becomes nonuniform, with the corresponding director deformation. In general, the ideal local structure is frustrated; it cannot fill space. As a result, the liquid crystal must form a complex global phase, which may have a combination of deformation modes, and may have a periodic array of defects. Thus, the concept of an ideal local structure under geometric frustration provides a unified framework to understand the wide variety of modulated phases.

Abstract:The helical nanofilament (HNF) liquid crystal phase is a complex, hierarchical self-assembly in which bent-core molecules cooled from the isotropic melt form dense periodic arrays of nanoscale filaments of twisted smectic layers, a structure driven by an inherent tendency of the layers to be locally saddle-splayed. Here we report the results of a study of mixtures of an HNF-forming bent-core liquid crystal with a variety of organic guest molecules, showing that the high temperature, isotropic phase is completely mixed but that upon cooling the filaments form and grow, expelling the guest material from their internal volume. The nanofilaments form a network which acts as a porous nanoconfinement medium of large internal area (similar to 100 m(2) cm(-3)), with the guest material confined to nanoscale interstitial volumes between the filaments. Such helical nanofilament networks represent a robust platform for potential applications in chiral separations, asymmetric synthesis, and photonic metamaterials.

Abstract:The ability of thin materials to shape-shift is a common occurrence that leads to dynamic pattern formation and function in natural and man-made structures. However, harnessing this concept to design inorganic structures at the nanoscale rationally has remained far from reach due to a lack of fundamental understanding of the essential physical components. Here, we show that the interaction between organic ligands and the nanocrystal surface is responsible for the full range of chiral shapes seen in colloidal nanoplatelets. The adsorption of ligands results in incompatible curvatures on the top and bottom surfaces of NPL, causing them to deform into helicoïds, helical ribbons, or tubes depending on the lateral dimensions and crystallographic orientation of the NPL. We demonstrate that nanoplatelets belong to the broad class of geometrically frustrated assemblies and exhibit one of their hallmark features: a transition between helicoïds and helical ribbons at a critical width. The effective curvature $\bar{\kappa}$ is the single aggregate parameter that encodes the details of the ligand/surface interaction, determining the nanoplatelets' geometry for a given width and crystallographic orientation. The conceptual framework described here will aid the rational design of dynamic, chiral nanostructures with high fundamental and practical relevance.
