Abstract:We establish several new fractal and number theoretical phenomena connected with expansions which are generated by infinite linear iterated function systems. First of all we show that the systems $\Phi$ of cylinders of generalized Lüroth expansions are, generally speaking, not faithful for the Hausdorff dimension calculation. Using Yuval Peres' approach, we prove sufficient conditions for the non-faithfulness of such families of cylinders. On the other hand, rather general sufficient conditions for the faithfulness of such covering systems are also found. As a corollary of our main results, we obtain the non-faithfullness of the family of cylinders generated by the classical Lüroth expansion. Possible infinite entropy of the stochastic vector $Q_\infty$ which determines the metric relations for partitions of the generalized Lüroth expansions, possible non-faithfulness of the family $\Phi(Q_\infty)$ and the absence of general formulae for the calculation of the Hausdorff dimension even for probability measures with independent identically distributed symbols of generalized Lüroth expansions are all facts that do not allow to apply usual probabilistic methods, as well as methods of dynamical systems to study fractal properties of corresponding subsets of non-normal numbers. Despite of the above mentioned difficulties, we develop new approach to the study of subsets of $Q_\infty$-essentially non-normal numbers and prove (without any additional restrictions on the stochastic vector $Q_{\infty}$) that this set is superfractal. This result answers the open problem mentioned in \cite{AKNT2} and completes the metric, dimensional and topological classification of real numbers via the asymptotic behaviour of frequencies their digits in the generalized Lüroth expansion.

Abstract:Loop counting functions $U(x)$ estimate the number of "weighted" loops in a digital representation of $x\in[-1,1]$. Roughly speaking, each $x$ is considered as an infinite walk, where the steps of the walk correspond to digits of $x$. The graph of loop counting functions $U$ has a fractal structure that resembles complex mountain landscapes. In some sense, $U$ allows us to look at random walks globally. These functions may be helpful in the analysis of some hard problems related to the distribution of self-avoiding random walks (SAW) in a multi-dimensional case since SAW closely relate to zeros of $U(x)$. We note here that $U(x)$ can be naturally extended to a multidimensional argument $x$. In this article, the focus will be on some analytic aspects. It will be shown that integrals $\int x^AU(x)^Bdx$ with non-negative integers $A$ and $B$ can be expressed in terms of integrals of rational functions with integer coefficients. Moreover, it will be shown that $\int x^A U(x)dx$ admits closed-form expressions. Fourier series for $U$ is also computed. Finally, we discuss some connections with special functions and generalized continued fractions, and other perspectives.

Abstract:Working with sets of infinite -Hausdorff measures can be cumbersome, so simplifying them to sets of positive finite general fractal measures proves to be highly beneficial. This paper aims to demonstrate that the -Hausdorff measures adhere to the property of being a subset of positive and finite measures. Our main result is then applied to establish that the general fractal function dimension is defined as the supremum of the general fractal dimension across all Borel probability measures.

Abstract:In this work we start developing a Riemann-type integration theory on spaces which are equipped with a fractal structure. These topological structures have a recursive nature, which allows us to guarantee a good approximation to the true value of a certain integral with respect to some measure defined on the Borel σ-algebra of the space. We give the notion of Darboux sums and lower and upper Riemann integrals of a bounded function when given a measure and a fractal structure. Furthermore, we give the notion of a Riemann-integrable function in this context and prove that each μ-measurable function is Riemann-integrable with respect to μ. Moreover, if μ is the Lebesgue measure, then the Lebesgue integral on a bounded set of Rn meets the Riemann integral with respect to the Lebesgue measure in the context of measures and fractal structures. Finally, we give some examples showing that we can calculate improper integrals and integrals on fractal sets.

Numerical evaluation of singular integrals on non-disjoint self-similar fractal sets

Abstract:We consider the numerical evaluation of a class of double integrals with respect to a pair of self-similar measures over a self-similar fractal set (the attractor of an iterated function system), with a weakly singular integrand of logarithmic or algebraic type. In a recent paper [Gibbs, Hewett and Moiola, Numer. Alg., 2023] it was shown that when the fractal set is "disjoint" in a certain sense (an example being the Cantor set), the self-similarity of the measures, combined with the homogeneity properties of the integrand, can be exploited to express the singular integral exactly in terms of regular integrals, which can be readily approximated numerically. In this paper we present a methodology for extending these results to cases where the fractal is non-disjoint but non-overlapping (in the sense that the open set condition holds). Our approach applies to many well-known examples including the Sierpinski triangle, the Vicsek fractal, the Sierpinski carpet, and the Koch snowflake.

Abstract:We consider several distances between two sets of points, which are modifications of the Hausdorff metric, and apply them to describe some fractals such as $\delta$-quasi-self-similar sets, and some other geometric notions in Euclidean space, such as tilings with quasi-prototiles and patterns with quasi-motifs. For the $\delta$-quasi-self-similar sets satisfying the open set condition we obtain the same result as a classical theorem due to P. A. P. Moran. In this paper we try to gaze on fractals in an aspect of their "form" and suggest a few of related questions. Finally, we attempt to inquire an issue -- what nature and behavior do non-crystalline solids that approximate to crystals show?

Abstract:We introduce a notion of gap sequences for compact sets E subset of R(d), which is a generalization of the gap sequences of compact sets on the real line. We show that if the gap sequences of two fractal sets are not equivalent, then these two sets cannot be Lipschitz equivalent, where the latter fact is usually very hard to verify. Finally, we show that for some typical fractal sets, the gap sequences characterize the upper box dimension.

Abstract:This paper provides a new model to compute the fractal dimension of a subset on a generalized-fractal space. Recall that fractal structures are a perfect place where a new definition of fractal dimension can be given, so we perform a suitable discretization of the Hausdorff theory of fractal dimension. We also find some connections between our definition and the classical ones and also with fractal dimensions I & II (see <a class="link-internal link-http" href="http://arxiv.org/submit/0080421/pdf">http://arxiv.org/submit/0080421/pdf</a>). Therefore, we generalize them and obtain an easy method in order to calculate the fractal dimension of strict self-similar sets which are not required to verify the open set condition.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the fractal properties of the boundary of the Cantorval connected with Guthrie-Nymann's series. In particular, we prove that such a Cantorval can be represented as a union of open intervals and a Cantor set having zero Lebesgue measure and a fractional Hausdorff dimension. Moreover, we extend the result to a countable family of Cantorvals with a similar structure.

Abstract:In this article, we study two problems concerning the size of the set of finite point configurations generated by a compact set $E\subset \mathbb{R}^d$. The first problem concerns how the Lebesgue measure or the Hausdorff dimension of the finite point configuration set depends on that of $E$. In particular, we show that if a planar set has dimension exceeding $\frac{5}{4}$, then there exists a point $x\in E$ so that for each integer $k\geq2$, the set of "$k$-chains" with initial point at $x$ has positive Lebesgue measure. The second problem is a continuous analogue of the Erdős unit distance problem, which aims to determine the maximum number of times a point configuration with prescribed gaps can appear in $E$. For instance, given a triangle with prescribed sides and given a sufficiently regular planar set $E$ with Hausdorff dimension no less than $\frac{7}{4}$, we show that the dimension of the set of vertices in $E$ forming said triangle does not exceed $3\,\dim_{\mathcal{H}} (E)-3$. In addition to the Euclidean norm, we consider more general distances given by functions satisfying the so-called Phong-Stein rotational curvature condition. We also explore a number of examples to demonstrate the extent to which our results are sharp.

Abstract:We study algorithmic problems on subsets of Euclidean space of low fractal dimension. These spaces are the subject of intensive study in various branches of mathematics, including geometry, topology, and measure theory. There are several well-studied notions of fractal dimension for sets and measures in Euclidean space. We consider a definition of fractal dimension for finite metric spaces which agrees with standard notions used to empirically estimate the fractal dimension of various sets. We define the fractal dimension of some metric space to be the infimum $\delta>0$, such that for any $\epsilon > 0$, for any ball $B$ of radius $r\geq 2\epsilon$, and for any $\epsilon $-net $N$ (that is, for any maximal $\epsilon $-packing), we have $|B\cap N|=O((r/\epsilon)^\delta)$. Using this definition we obtain faster algorithms for a plethora of classical problems on sets of low fractal dimension in Euclidean space. Our results apply to exact and fixed-parameter algorithms, approximation schemes, and spanner constructions. Interestingly, the dependence of the performance of these algorithms on the fractal dimension nearly matches the currently best-known dependence on the standard Euclidean dimension. Thus, when the fractal dimension is strictly smaller than the ambient dimension, our results yield improved solutions in all of these settings.

Abstract:By juxtaposing ideas from fractal geometry and dynamical systems, Furstenberg proposed a series of conjectures in the late 1960's that explore the relationship between digit expansions with respect to multiplicatively independent bases. In this work, we introduce and study — in the discrete context of the integers — analogs of some of the notions and results surrounding Furstenberg's work. In particular, we define a new class of fractal sets of integers that parallels the notion of ×r ‐invariant sets on the 1‐torus and investigate the additive and geometric independence between two such fractal sets when they are structured with respect to multiplicatively independent bases. Our main results in this direction parallel the works of Furstenberg, Hochman–Shmerkin, Shmerkin, Wu, and Lindenstrauss–Meiri–Peres and include: a classification of all subsets of the positive integers that are simultaneously ×r ‐ and ×s ‐invariant; integer analogs of two of Furstenberg's transversality conjectures pertaining to the dimensions of the intersection A∩B and the sumset A+B of ×r ‐ and ×s ‐invariant sets A and B when r and s are multiplicatively independent; and a description of the dimension of iterated sumsets A+A+⋯+A for any ×r ‐invariant set A . We achieve these results by combining ideas from fractal geometry and ergodic theory to build a bridge between the continuous and discrete regimes. For the transversality results, we rely heavily on quantitative bounds on the Lq ‐dimensions of projections of restricted digit Cantor measures obtained recently by Shmerkin. We end by outlining a number of open questions and directions regarding fractal subsets of the integers.

Abstract:Consider a standard Cantor set in the plane of Hausdorff dimension 1. If the linear density of the associated measure $\mu$ vanishes, then the set of points where the principal value of the Cauchy singular integral of $\mu$ exists has Hausdorff dimension 1. The result is extended to Cantor sets in $\mathbb{R}^d$ of Hausdorff dimension $\alpha$ and Riesz singular integrals of homogeneity $-\alpha$, 0 < $\alpha$ < d : the set of points where the principal value of the Riesz singular integral of $\mu$ exists has Hausdorff dimension $\alpha$. A martingale associated with the singular integral is introduced to support the proof.

Abstract:In this work, we aim to advance the development of a fractal theory for sets of integers. The core idea is to utilize the fractal structure of $p$-adic integers, where $p$ is a prime number, and compare this with conventional densities and counting measures for integers. Our approach yields some results in combinatorial number theory. The results show how the local fractal structure of a set in $\mathbb{Z}_p$ can provide bounds for the counting measure for its projection onto $\mathbb{Z}$. Additionally, we establish a relationship between the counting dimension of a set of integers and its box-counting dimension in $\mathbb{Z}_p$. Since our results pertain to sets that are projections of closed sets in $\mathbb{Z}_p$, we also provide both necessary and sufficient combinatorial conditions for a set $E\subset \mathbb{Z}$ to be the projection of a closed set in $\mathbb{Z}_p$.
