Abstract:Abstract The double longitudinal-spin asymmetry, A LL , of the J/ψ production in polarized proton-proton collisions is presented in this paper at QCD next-to-leading order. It is found that the obtained values of A LL are in general consistent with the PHENIX measurements. Various sets of the long-distance matrix elements (LDMEs) are employed in our calculation to study the possible theoretical uncertainties. It is found that, for p t < 5 GeV, all these LDMEs lead to almost the same results, which are within the tolerance of the experimental data uncertainties.

Abstract:Understanding the spin structure of the proton is of large interest to the nuclear physics community and it is one of the main goals of the spin physics program at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). Measurements from data taken by the PHENIX detector with transverse ($p^{\uparrow} + p$, $p^{\uparrow}$ + Al, $p^{\uparrow}$ + Au) proton polarization play an important role in this, in particular, due to the leading order access to gluons in polarized protons. Transverse single-spin asymmetries (TSSAs) provide insight into initial and final state spin-momentum and spin-spin parton-hadron correlations. In addition to possible final state contributions, $\pi^{0}$ and $\eta$ TSSAs access both quark and gluon correlations in the polarized proton. Furthermore, the $p^{\uparrow} + A$ data from RHIC provides an opportunity to study the effect of TSSAs in the presence of additional nuclear matter. Midrapidity $\pi^{0}$ and $\eta$ mesons are measured at PHENIX by detecting the 2$\gamma$ decay with the electromagnetic calorimeter (EMCal) in the central arm spectrometer, which has fine granularity for the resolution of separate decay photons. New results for TSSAs of midrapidity $\pi^{0}$ and $\eta$ mesons in $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 200$ GeV $p^{\uparrow}$ + Au and $p^{\uparrow}$ + Al collisions from the 2015 running year will be presented, and compared with the recent $\sqrt{s} = 200$ GeV $p^{\uparrow} + p$ results.

Abstract:This article is based on my Proceedings for the 47th Course of the International School of Subnuclear Physics on the Most Unexpected at LHC and the Status of High Energy Frontier, Erice, Sicily, Italy, 2009. Results from the PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) in nucleus-nucleus and proton-proton collisions at c.m. energy $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=200$ GeV are presented in the context of the methods of single and two-particle inclusive reactions which were used in the discovery of hard-scattering in p-p collisions at the CERN ISR in the 1970's. These techniques are used at RHIC in A+A collisions because of the huge combinatoric background from the large particle multiplicity. Topics include $J/\Psi$ suppression, jet quenching in the dense medium (sQGP) as observed with $\pi^0$ at large transverse momentum, thermal photons, collective flow, two-particle correlations, suppression of heavy quarks at large $p_T$ and its possible relation to Higgs searches at the LHC. The differences and similarities of the measurements in p-p and A+A collisions are presented. The two discussion sessions which followed the lectures on which this article is based are included at the end.

Abstract:We review some aspects of spin physics where QCD instantons play an important role. In particular, their large contributions in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering and polarized proton on proton scattering. We also review their possible contribution in the $\mathcal{P}$-odd pion azimuthal charge correlations in peripheral $AA$ scattering at collider energies.

Abstract:The BRAHMS experiment at RHIC has measured the transverse single spin asymmetries in polarized pp induced pion production at RHIC. The results from the RHIC run-5 shows a significant asymmetry for pi+ and pi- at moderate xF. The trend of the data is in agreement with lower energy results while the absolute values are surprisingly large. The pT dependence is approximately inversely propotional to pT in agreement with the pQCD expectations.

Abstract:We report recent results from a multiphase transport (AMPT) model on the azimuthal anisotropies of particle momentum distributions in heavy ion collisions at the relativistic heavy ion collider. These include higher-order anisotropic flows and their scaling, the rapidity dependence of anisotropic flows and the elliptic flow of charm quarks.

Abstract:I outline experimental results on heavy ion collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider for a non-technical audience. This includes: elliptic flow and nearly ideal hydrodynamics; the suppression of hard particles and the ratio R_AA; and electromagnetic signals, including dileptons and direct photons. Especially puzzling is why the behavior of heavy (charm) quarks appears to be so similar to that of light quarks.

Abstract:We consider the inclusive production of longitudinally polarized baryons in p→p collisions at RHIC-BNL, with one longitudinally polarized proton. We study the spin transfer between the initial proton and the produced baryon as a function of its rapidity and we elucidate its sensitivity to the quark helicity distributions of the proton and to the polarized fragmentation functions of the quark into the baryon. We make predictions using an SU(6) quark spectator model and a perturbative QCD (pQCD) based model. We discuss these different predictions, and what can be learned from them, in view of the forthcoming experiments at RHIC-BNL.

Abstract:The results from data taken during the last several years at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider (RHIC) will be reviewed in the paper. Several selected topics that further our understanding of constituent quark scaling, jet quenching and color screening effect of heavy quarkonia in the hot dense medium will be presented. Detector upgrades will further probe the properties of Quark Gluon Plasma. Future measurements with upgraded detectors will be presented. The discovery perspectives from future measurements will also be discussed.

Abstract:We study the cross section for vector boson ($W^{\pm}/Z^0/\gamma^*$) production in polarized nucleon-nucleon collisions for low transverse momentum of the observed vector boson. For the case where one measures the transverse momentum and azimuthal angle of the vector bosons, we present the cross sections and the associated spin asymmetries in terms of transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions (TMDs) at tree level within the TMD factorization formalism. To assess the feasibility of experimental measurements, we estimate the spin asymmetries for $W^{\pm}/Z^0$ boson production in polarized proton-proton collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) by using current knowledge of the relevant TMDs. We find that some of these asymmetries can be sizable if the suppression effect from TMD evolution is not too strong. The $W$ program at RHIC can, thus, test and constrain spin theory by providing unique information on the universality properties of TMDs, TMD evolution, and the nucleon structure. For example, the single transverse spin asymmetries could be used to probe the well-known Sivers function $f_{1T}^{\perp q}$, as well as the transversal helicity distribution $g_{1T}^{q}$ via the parity-violating nature of $W$ production.

Exploring the Spin Structure of the Proton with Two-Body Partonic Scattering at RHIC

Abstract:The STAR collaboration at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider is using polarized proton beams at sqrt{s} = 200 GeV to study the spin structure of the proton. The first results for the double spin helicity dependence of inclusive jet production are presented along with projections for additional data taken in 2005 and 2006. When fully analyzed these data sets should place strong constraints on the possible contribution of gluonic spin to the proton spin as expressed by Delta G. Future studies using 2-jet or photon-jet coincidences to map out the gluon spin distribution vs. the gluon's momentum fraction of the proton are discussed.

Abstract:We investigate resonant tunneling through molecular states of coupled double quantum dots embedded in an Aharonov-Bohm (AB) interferometer. The conductance through the system consists of two resonances associated with the bonding and the antibonding quantum states. We predict that the two resonances are composed of a Breit-Wigner resonance and a Fano resonance, those widths and Fano factor depending on the AB phase very sensitively. Further, we point out that the bonding properties, such as the covalent and the ionic bonding, can be identified by the AB oscillations.

Abstract:The PHENIX experiment at RHIC has a unique large rapidity coverage ($1.2 < |y| < 2.2$) for heavy flavor studies in heavy-ion collisions. This kinematic region has a smaller particle density and may undergo different nuclear effects before and after the hard process when compared to mid-rapidity production. The latest PHENIX runs contain a large data set which allows, for the first time, the study of heavy flavor and $J/\psi$ flow at the large rapidity region in Au$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=$200 GeV. This measurement has the potential to reveal a medium evolution distinct from that known at mid-rapidity.

Abstract:Hydrodynamics has been rather successful at describing results obtained in relativistic nuclear collisions at RHIC. Here we show results obtained with NeXSPheRIO on Au+Au collisions and the less studied Cu+Cu collisions. We study elliptic flow and its connection with eccentricity suggested by PHOBOS, as well as present elliptic flow fluctuations. We also show results for directed flow and compare with PHOBOS and STAR data.
