Abstract:We investigate the prospects for detecting and constraining density and temperature inhomogeneities in the circumgalactic medium (CGM) using absorption measurements of metal ions. Distributions in the gas thermal properties could arise from turbulence, gas cooling from the hot phase, and mixing between the cool and hot phases. Focusing on these physically motivated models, we parameterize each with a single parameter for simplicity and provide empirical and theoretical estimates for reasonable parameter values. We then construct the probability distribution functions for each of these scenarios, calculate the effective ion fractions, and fit our models to the COS-Halos absorption measurements to infer the gas densities and metallicities. We find that the models we consider (i) produce similarly good fits to the observations with or without distributions in the gas thermal properties, and (ii) result in detectable changes in the column densities only at the boundaries of reasonable parameter values. We show that He II self-shielding can have a larger effect on the ion fractions than density and temperature fluctuations. As a result, uncertainties in cloud geometry and their spatial distribution, affecting the details of radiation transfer, may obscure the effect of inhomogeneities.

Detection of diffuse HI emission in the circumgalactic medium of NGC891 and NGC4565 -- II

Abstract:We probe the neutral circumgalactic medium (CGM) along the major axes of NGC891 and NGC4565 in 21-cm emission out to $\gtrsim 100$kpc using the Green Bank Telescope (GBT), extending our previous minor axes observations. We achieve an unprecedented $5\sigma$ sensitivity of $6.1\times 10^{16}$ cm$^{-2}$ per 20 km s$^{-1}$ velocity channel. We detect HI with diverse spectral shapes, velocity widths, and column densities. We compare our detections to the interferometric maps from the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope (WSRT) obtained as part of the HALOGAS survey. At small impact parameters, $> 31-43\%$ of the emission detected by the GBT cannot be explained by emission seen in the WSRT maps, and it increases to $> 64-73\%$ at large impact parameters. This implies the presence of diffuse circumgalactic HI. The mass ratio between HI in the CGM and HI in the disk is an order of magnitude larger than previous estimates based on shallow GBT mapping. The diffuse HI along the major axes pointings is corotating with the HI disk. The velocity along the minor axes pointings is consistent with an inflow and/or fountain in NGC891 and an inflow/outflow in NGC4565. Including the circumgalactic HI, the depletion time and the accretion rate of NGC4565 are sufficient to sustain its star formation. In NGC891, most of the required accreting material is still missing.

Absorption-based Circumgalactic Medium Line Emission Estimates

Abstract:Motivated by integral field units (IFUs) on large ground telescopes and proposals for ultraviolet-sensitive space telescopes to probe circumgalactic medium (CGM) emission, we survey the most promising emission lines and how such observations can inform our understanding of the CGM and its relation to galaxy formation. We tie our emission estimates to both HST/COS absorption measurements of ions around $z\approx 0.2$ Milky Way mass halos and models for the density and temperature of gas. We also provide formulas that simplify extending our estimates to other samples and physical scenarios. We find that OIII 5007 A and NII 6583 A, which at fixed ionic column density are primarily sensitive to the thermal pressure of the gas they inhabit, may be detectable with KCWI and especially IFUs on 30 m telescopes out to half a virial radius. OV 630 A and OVI $1032,1038$ A are perhaps the most promising ultraviolet lines, with models predicting intensities $>100~\gamma$ cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ sr$^{-1}$ in the inner 100 kpc of Milky Way-like systems. A detection of OVI would confirm the collisionally ionized picture and constrain the density profile of the CGM. Other ultraviolet metal lines constrain the amount of gas that is actively cooling and mixing. We find that CIII 978 A and CIV 1548 A may be detectable if an appreciable fraction of the observed OVI column is associated with mixing or cooling gas. H$\alpha$ emission within $100\;$kpc of Milky Way-like galaxies is within reach of current IFUs even for the minimum signal from ionizing background fluorescence, while Hydrogen $n>2$ Lyman-series lines are too weak to be detectable.

An HST/COS legacy survey of high-velocity ultraviolet absorption in the Milky Way's circumgalactic medium and the Local Group

Abstract:To characterize the absorption properties of this circumgalactic medium (CGM) and its relation to the LG we present the so-far largest survey of metal absorption in Galactic high-velocity clouds (HVCs) using archival ultraviolet (UV) spectra of extragalactic background sources. The UV data are obtained with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) onboard the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and are supplemented by 21 cm radio observations of neutral hydrogen. Along 270 sightlines we measure metal absorption in the lines of SiII, SiIII, CII, and CIV and associated HI 21 cm emission in HVCs in the velocity range |v_LSR|=100-500 km s^-1. With this unprecedented large HVC sample we were able to improve the statistics on HVC covering fractions, ionization conditions, small-scale structure, CGM mass, and inflow rate. For the first time, we determine robustly the angular two point correlation function of the high-velocity absorbers, systematically analyze antipodal sightlines on the celestial sphere, and compare the absorption characteristics with that of Damped Lyman alpha absorbers (DLAs) and constrained cosmological simulations of the LG. Our study demonstrates that the Milky Way CGM contains sufficient gaseous material to maintain the Galactic star-formation rate at its current level. We show that the CGM is composed of discrete gaseous structures that exhibit a large-scale kinematics together with small-scale variations in physical conditions. The Magellanic Stream clearly dominates both the cross section and mass flow of high-velocity gas in the Milky Way's CGM. The possible presence of high-velocity LG gas underlines the important role of the local cosmological environment in the large-scale gas-circulation processes in and around the Milky Way (abridged).

Abstract:The spatial distribution of the gaseous components of the Milky Way is of great importance for a number of different fields, e.g. Galactic structure, star formation and cosmic rays. However, obtaining distance information to gaseous clouds in the interstellar medium from Doppler-shifted line emission is notoriously difficult given our unique vantage point in the Galaxy. It requires precise knowledge of gas velocities and generally suffers from distance ambiguities. Previous works often assumed the optically thin limit (no absorption), a fixed velocity field, and lack resolution overall. We aim to overcome these issues and improve previous reconstructions of the gaseous constituents of the interstellar medium of the Galaxy. We use 3D Gaussian processes to model correlations in the interstellar medium, including correlations between different lines of sight, and enforce a spatially coherent structure in the prior. For modelling the transport of radiation from the emitting gas to us as observers, we take absorption effects into account. A special numerical grid ensures high resolution nearby. We infer the spatial distributions of HI, CO, their emission line-widths, and the Galactic velocity field in a joint Bayesian inference. We further constrain these fields with complementary data from Galactic masers and young stellar object clusters. Our main result consists of a set of samples that implicitly contain statistical uncertainties. The resulting maps are spatially coherent and reproduce the data with high fidelity. We confirm previous findings regarding the warping and flaring of the Galactic disc. A comparison with 3D dust maps reveals a good agreement on scales larger than approximately 400 pc. While our results are not free of artefacts, they present a big step forward in obtaining high quality 3D maps of the interstellar medium.

Detection of H-alpha emission from the Magellanic Stream: evidence for an extended gaseous Galactic halo

Abstract:We have detected faint, diffuse H$\alpha emission from several points along the Magellanic Stream, using the Rutgers Fabry--Perot Interferometer at the CTIO 1.5-m telescope. At points on the leading edges of the H I clouds MS II, MS III, and MS IV, we detect H$\alpha emission of surface brightness $0.37 \pm 0.02$ Rayleighs, $0.21 \pm 0.04$ R, and $0.20 \pm 0.02$ R respectively, corresponding to emission measures of 1.0 to 0.5 \cmsixpc. We have observed several positions near the MS IV concentration, and find that the strongest emission is on the sharp leading-edge density gradient. There is less emission at points away from the gradient, and halfway between MS III and MS IV the H$\alpha surface brightness is $< 0.04$ R. We attribute the H$\alpha emission at cloud leading edges to heating of the Stream clouds by ram pressure from ionized gas in the halo of the Galaxy. These observations suggest that ram pressure from halo gas plays a large role in stripping the Stream out of the Magellanic Clouds. They also suggest the presence of a relatively large density of gas, $n_{\rm H} \sim 10^{-4} cm^{-3}$, in the Galactic halo at $\sim 50$ kpc radius, and far above the Galactic plane, $b \sim -80°$. This implies that the Galaxy has a very large baryonic, gaseous extent, and supports models of Lyman-$\alpha and metal-line QSO absorption lines in which the absorption systems reside in extended galactic halos.

Abstract:We present the largest Galactic neutral hydrogen HI absorption survey to date, utilizing the Australian SKA Pathfinder Telescope at an unprecedented spatial resolution of 30''. This survey, GASKAP-HI, unbiasedly targets 2,714 continuum background sources over 250 square degrees in the direction of the Magellanic Clouds, a significant increase compared to a total of 373 sources observed by previous Galactic absorption surveys across the entire Milky Way. We aim to investigate the physical properties of cold (CNM) and warm (WNM) neutral atomic gas in the Milky Way foreground, characterized by two prominent filaments at high Galactic latitudes (between $-45^{\circ}$ and $-25^{\circ}$). We detected strong HI absorption along 462 lines of sight above the 3$\sigma$ threshold, achieving an absorption detection rate of 17%. GASKAP-HI's unprecedented angular resolution allows for simultaneous absorption and emission measurements to sample almost the same gas clouds along a line of sight. A joint Gaussian decomposition is then applied to absorption-emission spectra to provide direct estimates of HI optical depths, temperatures, and column densities for the CNM and WNM components. The thermal properties of CNM components are consistent with those previously observed along a wide range of Solar neighborhood environments, indicating that cold HI properties are widely prevalent throughout the local interstellar medium. Across our region of interest, CNM accounts for ~30% of the total HI gas, with the CNM fraction increasing with column density toward the two filaments. Our analysis reveals an anti-correlation between CNM temperature and its optical depth, which implies that CNM with lower optical depth leads to a higher temperature.

Revisiting the Vertical Distribution of HI Absorbing Clouds in the Solar Neighborhood. II. Constraints from a Large Catalog of 21 cm Absorption Observations at High Galactic Latitudes

Abstract:The cold neutral medium (CNM) is where neutral atomic hydrogen (HI) is converted into molecular clouds, so the structure and kinematics of the CNM are key drivers of galaxy evolution. Here we provide new constraints on the vertical distribution of the CNM using the recently-developed $\texttt{kinematic_scaleheight}$ software package and a large catalog of sensitive HI absorption observations. We estimate the thickness of the CNM in the solar neighborhood to be $\sigma_z\sim50$$\unicode{x2013}$$90~\mathrm{pc}$, assuming a Gaussian vertical distribution. This is a factor of $\sim2$ smaller than typically assumed, indicating the thickness of the CNM in the solar neighborhood is similar to that found in the inner Galaxy, consistent with recent simulation results. If we consider only structures with HI optical depths $\tau>0.1$ or column densities $N(\mathrm{HI})>10^{19.5}~\mathrm{cm^{-2}}$, which recent work suggests are thresholds for molecule formation, we find $\sigma_z\sim50~\mathrm{pc}$. Meanwhile, for structures with $\tau<0.1$ or column densities $N(\mathrm{HI})<10^{19.5}~\mathrm{cm^{-2}}$, we find $\sigma_z\sim120~\mathrm{pc}$. These thicknesses are similar to those derived for the thin- and thick-disk molecular cloud populations traced by CO emission, possibly suggesting that cold HI and CO are well-mixed. Approximately $20\%$ of CNM structures are identified as outliers, with kinematics that are not well-explained by Galactic rotation. We show that some of these CNM structures $\unicode{x2014}$ perhaps representing intermediate velocity clouds $\unicode{x2014}$ are associated with the Local Bubble wall. We compare our results to recent observations and simulations, and we discuss their implications for the multiphase structure of the Milky Way's interstellar medium.

The Carina Nebula and Gum 31 molecular complex: II. The distribution of the atomic gas revealed in unprecedented detail

Abstract:We report high spatial resolution observations of the HI 21cm line in the Carina Nebula and the Gum 31 region obtained with the Australia Telescope Compact Array. The observations covered $\sim$ 12 deg$^2$ centred on $l= 287.5°,b = -1°$, achieving an angular resolution of $\sim $ 35 arcseconds. The HI map revealed complex filamentary structures across a wide range of velocities. Several "bubbles" are clearly identified in the Carina Nebula Complex, produced by the impact of the massive star clusters located in this region. An HI absorption profile obtained towards the strong extragalactic radio source PMN J1032--5917 showed the distribution of the cold component of the atomic gas along the Galactic disk, with the Sagittarius-Carina and Perseus spiral arms clearly distinguishable. Preliminary calculations of the optical depth and spin temperatures of the cold atomic gas show that the HI line is opaque ($\tau \gtrsim$ 2) at several velocities in the Sagittarius-Carina spiral arm. The spin temperature is $\sim100$ K in the regions with the highest optical depth, although this value might be lower for the saturated components. The atomic mass budget of Gum 31 is $\sim35 \%$ of the total gas mass. HI self absorption features have molecular counterparts and good spatial correlation with the regions of cold dust as traced by the infrared maps. We suggest that in Gum 31 regions of cold temperature and high density are where the atomic to molecular gas phase transition is likely to be occurring.

Abstract:Abstract The nebular recombination line Hα is widely used as a star-formation rate (SFR) indicator in the local and high-redshift Universe. We present a detailed Hα radiative transfer study of high-resolution isolated Milky-Way and Large Magellanic Cloud simulations that include radiative transfer, non-equilibrium thermochemistry, and dust evolution. We focus on the spatial morphology and temporal variability of the Hα emission, and its connection to the underlying gas and star formation properties. The Hα and Hβ radial and vertical surface brightness profiles are in excellent agreement with observations of nearby galaxies. We find that the fraction of Hα emission from collisional excitation amounts to fcol ∼ 5–$10\%$, only weakly dependent on radius and vertical height, and that scattering boosts the Hα luminosity by $\sim 40\%$. The dust correction via the Balmer decrement works well (intrinsic Hα emission recoverable within 25%), though the dust attenuation law depends on the amount of attenuation itself both on spatially resolved and integrated scales. Important for the understanding of the Hα–SFR connection is the dust and helium absorption of ionizing radiation (Lyman continuum [LyC] photons), which are about $f_{\rm abs}\approx 28\%$ and $f_{\rm He}\approx 9\%$, respectively. Together with an escape fraction of $f_{\rm esc}\approx 6\%$, this reduces the available budget for hydrogen line emission by nearly half ($f_{\rm H}\approx 57\%$). We discuss the impact of the diffuse ionized gas, showing – among other things – that the extraplanar Hα emission is powered by LyC photons escaping the disc. Future applications of this framework to cosmological (zoom-in) simulations will assist in the interpretation of spectroscopy of high-redshift galaxies with the upcoming James Webb Space Telescope.

[C II] and [N II] from dense ionized regions in the Galaxy

Abstract:The interstellar medium (ISM) consists of highly ionized and neutral atomic, as well as molecular, components. Knowledge of their distribution is important for tracing the structure and lifecycle of the ISM. Here we determine the properties of the highly ionized and neutral weakly ionized gas in the Galaxy traced by the fine-structure lines of ionized nitrogen, [N II], and ionized carbon, [C II]. To analyze the ionized ISM we utilize [C II] 158 micron and [N II] 205 micron lines taken with the high spectral resolution Heterodyne Instrument in the Far-Infrared (HIFI) on the Herschel Space Observatory along ten lines of sight towards the inner Galaxy. [N II] emission can be used to estimate the contribution of the highly ionized gas to the [C II] emission and separate the highly ionized and weakly ionized neutral gas. We find that [N II] has strong emission in distinct spectral features along all lines of sight associated with strong [C II] emission. The [N II] arises from moderate density extended HII regions or ionized boundary layers of clouds. Comparison of the [N II] and [C II] spectra in 31 separate kinematic features shows that many of the [C II] spectra are affected by absorption from low excitation gas associated with molecular clouds, sometimes strongly so. The apparent fraction of the [C II] associated with the [N II] gas is unrealistically large in many cases, most likely due to the reduction of [C II] by absorption. In a few cases the foreground absorption can be modeled to determine the true source intensity. In these sources we find that the foreground absorbing gas layer has C$^+$ column densities of order 10$^{18}$ cm$^{-2}$. [C II] emission arising from strong sources of [N II] emission is frequently absorbed by low excitation foreground gas complicating the interpretation of the properties of the ionized and neutral gas components that give rise to [C II] emission.

The H-alpha Emission Signature: The Role of Critical Ionization Velocity in Interstellar Space

Abstract:Gaussian decomposition of HI4PI profiles was done for two regions along high velocity Complex M, the first with corresponding H-alpha emission and the second without. In the former, we detected the Critical Ionization Velocity (CIV) signature, a line width of 25 km/s, of H-alpha. In low-velocity gas, the CIV effect ionizes the atoms and produces the signatures of He (34 km/s), CNO (13.4 km/s), and the metals (around 6 km/s). In anomalous-velocity gas, the CIV effect ionizes the ions and produces the signatures of ionized CNO (20 km/s) and-or H-alpha (25.5 km/s), as well as the CIV signatures of metals around 6 km/s. These distinct CIV signatures indicate that the physical conditions are different in each velocity regime. The particles in the low-velocity gas cloud are initially neutral, the temperatures can be cold (50-100 K), and the abundances can be cosmic. The densities need to be high enough to impose regular recombination. The anomalous-velocity gas, on the other hand, initially contains a significant population of ionized and excited particles. The temperature and abundance values may be similar to those that characterize low-density gas, but the densities must be low enough so that the plasma is essentially collision-less, similar to the conditions in the solar wind.

Direct observations of the atomic-molecular phase transition in the Milky Way's nuclear wind

Abstract:Hundreds of high-velocity atomic gas clouds exist above and below the Galactic Centre, with some containing a molecular component. However, the origin of these clouds in the Milky Way's wind is unclear. This paper presents new high-resolution MeerKAT observations of three atomic gas clouds and studies the relationship between the atomic and molecular phases at $\sim 1$ pc scales. The clouds' atomic hydrogen column densities, $N_{\mathrm{HI}}$, are less than a $\mbox{few}\times 10^{20}$ cm$^{-2}$, but the two clouds closest to the Galactic Centre nonetheless have detectable CO emission. This implies the presence of H$_{2}$ at levels of $N_{\mathrm{HI}}$ at least a factor of ten lower than in the typical Galactic interstellar medium. For the cloud closest to the Galactic Centre, there is little correlation between the $N_{\mathrm{HI}}$ and the probability that it will harbour detectable CO emissions. In contrast, for the intermediate cloud, detectable CO is heavily biased toward the highest values of $N_{\mathrm{HI}}$. The cloud most distant from the Galactic Centre has no detectable CO at similar $N_{\mathrm{HI}}$ values. Moreover, we find that the two clouds with detectable CO are too molecule-rich to be in chemical equilibrium, given the depths of their atomic shielding layers, which suggests a scenario whereby these clouds consist of pre-existing molecular gas from the disc that the Galactic wind has swept up, and that is dissociating into atomic hydrogen as it flows away from the Galaxy. We estimate that entrained molecular material of this type has a $\sim \mathrm{few}-10$ Myr lifetime before photodissociating.

Abstract:Neutral atomic gas (HI) effectively traces galactic dynamics across mid to large galactocentric radii. However, its limitations in observing small-scale changes within the central few kiloparsecs, coupled with the often observed HI deficit in galactic centers, necessitates using molecular gas emission as a preferred tracer in these regions. Understanding the dynamics of both neutral atomic and molecular gas is crucial for a more complete understanding of how galaxies evolve, funnel gas from the outer disk into their central parts, and eventually form stars. In this work we aim to quantify the dynamics of both, the neutral atomic and molecular gas, in the nearby spiral galaxies NGC 1512, NGC 4535, and NGC 7496 using new MeerKAT-HI observations together with ALMA CO (2-1) observations from the PHANGS collaboration. We use the analysis tool 3D-Barolo to fit tilted ring models to the HI and CO observations. A combined approach of using the HI to constrain the true disk orientation parameters before applying these to the CO datasets is tested. This paper sets expectations for the results of the upcoming high-resolution HI coverage of many galaxies in the PHANGS-ALMA sample using MeerKAT or VLA, to establish a robust methodology for characterizing galaxy orientations and deriving dynamics from combining new HI with existing CO data.

Structural Study of Galactic Hot Gas Toward Markarian 421 from X-Ray Absorption and Emission Lines

Abstract:We present a detailed structural study of the hot ISM in the Galactic halo along the sight line toward the bright active galactic nucleus Mkn 421. The O VII and O VIII absorption lines were measured with the Low Energy Transmission Grating Spectrograph aboard Chandra toward Mkn 421, and the O VII and O VIII emission lines were observed in the vicinities of the sight line with the X-ray Imaging Spectrometer aboard Suzaku. We jointly analyzed the absorption and the emission spectra assuming exponential distributions of the gas temperature and density from the Galactic plane, and constrained the temperature and density at the plane to be 2.7(+0.6,-0.5)×106 K and 1.5(+0.7,-0.5)×10−3 cm−3, with the scale heights of 1.6(+3.6,-0.9)kpc and 5.1(> 1.2)kpc respectively. The results are consistent with those obtained in the LMC X-3 direction and the PKS 2155-304 direction, describing a thick disk-like hot gas with its height of a few kpc from the Galactic plane.
The Metallicity Mapping of the Ionized Diffuse Gas at the Milky Way Disk-halo Interface

Abstract:Metals in the diffuse, ionized gas at the boundary between the Milky Way's interstellar medium (ISM) and circumgalactic medium (CGM), known as the disk-halo interface (DHI), are valuable tracers of the feedback processes that drive the Galactic fountain. However, metallicity measurements in this region are challenging due to obscuration by the Milky Way ISM and uncertain ionization corrections that affect the total hydrogen column density. In this work, we constrain the ionization corrections to neutral hydrogen column densities using precisely measured electron column densities from the dispersion measure of pulsars that lie in the same globular clusters as UV-bright targets with high-resolution absorption spectroscopy. We address the blending of absorption lines with the ISM by jointly fitting Voigt profiles to all absorption components. We present our metallicity estimates for the DHI of the Milky Way based on detailed photoionization modeling to the absorption from ionized metal lines and ionization-corrected total hydrogen columns. Generally, the gas clouds show a large scatter in metallicity, ranging between $0.04-3.2\ Z_{\odot}$, implying that the DHI consists of a mixture of gaseous structures having multiple origins. We estimate the inflow and outflow timescales of the DHI ionized clouds to be $6 - 35$ Myr. We report the detection of an infalling cloud with super-solar metallicity that suggests a Galactic fountain mechanism, whereas at least one low-metallicity outflowing cloud ($Z < 0.1\ Z_{\odot}$) poses a challenge for Galactic fountain and feedback models.

Circumgalactic Medium at High Halo Masses -- Signatures of Cold Gas Depletion in Luminous Red Galaxies

Abstract:We study ultraviolet HI and metal line transitions in the circumgalactic medium (CGM) of 15 massive, quenched luminous red galaxies (LRGs) at redshift $z\sim 0.5$ and with impact parameters up to 400 kpc. We selected 8 of LRG-CGM systems to study general properties of the CGM around LRGs, while the other 7 are already known to contain cool CGM gas from MgII optical studies (MgII-LRGs). In the general LRGs population, we detect HI in 4 of 8 LRGs, in all cases with $N_{HI} < 10^{16.7} {\rm cm^{-2}}$. In contrast, all MgII-LRGs show HI; for four LRGs the HI column density is $N_{HI} \gtrsim 10^{18} {\rm cm^{-2}}$. The CGM of LRGs also shows low and intermediate ionized lines (such as CIII, CII, SiIII, SiII) and highly ionized lines of OVI (we detect OVI around 5 of 7 MgII-LRGs and 1 of 8 in the random sample). Next, we combine our sample with literature LRGs and $\lesssim L^{*}$ galaxies and we find that while for $\lesssim L^{*}$ galaxies CGM HI Ly$\alpha$ absorption is stronger as galaxies are more massive, the cool CGM traced by HI Ly$\alpha$ is suppressed above stellar masses of $M* \sim 10^{11.5}$ $M_{\odot}$. While most LRG CGM systems show weak or non-detectable OVI (equivalent width less than 0.2 Å), a few LRG CGM systems show strong OVI 1031, which in most cases likely originates from groups containing both a LRG and a blue star-forming neighboring galaxy.

Abstract:We present high resolution (R ~ 4 km/s) absorption measurements of the interstellar NaI and CaII lines measured towards 14 early-type stars of distance 123 pc - 1650 pc, located in the direction of the Ara OB1 stellar cluster. The line profiles can broadly be split into four distinct groupings of absorption component velocity, and we have attempted to identify an origin and distance to each of these interstellar features. For gas with absorption covering the velocity range -10 km/s < V_helio < +10 km/s, we can identify the absorbing medium with local gas belonging to the Lupus-Norma interstellar cavity located between 100 and 485 pc in this galactic direction. Gas with velocities spanning the range -20 km/s < V_helio < +20 km/s is detected towards stars with distances of 570-800 pc. We identify a wide-spread interstellar feature at V_helio ~ -15 km/s with the expanding HI shell called GSH 337+00-05, which is now placed at a distance of ~530 pc.

Abstract:Although the existence of large-scale hot gaseous halos around massive disk galaxies has been theorized for a long time, there is yet very little observational evidence. We report the Chandra and XMM-Newton grating spectral detection of O VII and Ne IX Kα absorption lines along the sight line of 4U 1957+11. The line absorption is consistent with the interstellar medium in origin. Attributing these line absorptions to the hot gas associated with the Galactic disk, we search for the gaseous halo around the Milky Way by comparing this sight line with more distant ones (toward the X-ray binary LMC X-3 and the active galactic nucleus Mrk 421). We find that all the line absorptions along the LMC X-3 and Mrk 421 sight lines are attributable to the hot gas in a thick Galactic disk, as traced by the absorption lines in the spectra of 4U 1957+11 after a Galactic latitude-dependent correction. We constrain the O VII column density through the halo to be NO VII < 5 × 1015 cm−2 (95% confidence limit) and conclude that the hot gas contribution to the metal line absorptions, if existing, is negligible.

Abstract:A growing body of evidence has been supporting the existence of so-called "dark molecular gas" (DMG), which is invisible in the most common tracer of molecular gas, i.e., CO rotational emission. DMG is believed to be the main gas component of the intermediate extinction region between A$\rm_v$$\sim$0.05-2, roughly corresponding to the self-shielding threshold of H$_2$ and $^{13}$CO. To quantify DMG relative to HI and CO, we are pursuing three observational techniques, namely, HI self-absorption, OH absorption, and TeraHz C$^+$ emission. In this paper, we focus on preliminary results from a CO and OH absorption survey of DMG candidates. Our analysis show that the OH excitation temperature is close to that of the Galactic continuum background and that OH is a good DMG tracer co-existing with molecular hydrogen in regions without CO. Through systematic "absorption mapping" by Square Kilometer Array (SKA) and ALMA, we will have unprecedented, comprehensive knowledge of the ISM components including DMG in terms of their temperature and density, which will impact our understanding of galaxy evolution and star formation profoundly.
