Abstract: By using analytic method, we prove that there exist rational curves on compact Hermitian manifolds with positive holomorphic bisectional curvature. It confirms a question of S.-T. Yau. It is well-known that Mori proved in \cite{Mori79} that every compact complex manifold $N$ with $c_1(N)>0$ contains at least one rational curve. However, as a borderline example, we show that the standard Hopf surface $S^1\times S^3$ has a Hermitian metric with non-negative holomorphic bisectional curvature (in particular, $c_1(S^1\times S^3)\geq 0$), but it contains no rational curve.

In this paper, some recent developments and new results on curvatures and fundamental groups of Finsler manifolds are summarized briefly. Abstract:We introduce a new approach to the geometric Bombieri--Lang conjecture for hyperbolic varieties in characteristic 0. The main idea is to construct an entire curve on a special fiber of a variety over a complex function field from an infinite sequence of rational points of the variety. The construction relies on the classical Brody lemma in complex geometry and is conditional on a non-degeneracy conjecture of partial heights. In particular, we prove the geometric Bombieri-Lang conjecture for hyperbolic projective varieties which have finite morphisms to abelian varieties over function fields of characteristic 0.

We survey recent advances in two of them, the descent and the fibration method, in a number-theoretical context (rational points over number fields) and in an algebro-geometric one (rational curves on real varieties), and discuss the question of rational points over function fields of p-adic curves.

$M_{0,5}$: Towards the Chabauty-Kim method in higher dimensions

Abstract:If Z is an open subscheme of Spec ZZ, X is a sufficiently nice Z-model of a smooth curve over QQ, and p is a closed point of Z, the Chabauty-Kim method leads to the construction of locally analytic functions on X(ZZ_p) which vanish on X(Z); we call such functions "Kim functions". At least in broad outline, the method generalizes readily to higher dimensions. In fact, in some sense, the surface M_{0,5} should be easier than the previously studied curve M_{0,4} since its points are closely related to those of M_{0,4}, yet they face a further condition to integrality. This is mirrored by a certain "weight advantage" we encounter, because of which, M_{0,5} possesses new Kim functions not coming from M_{0,4}. Here we focus on the case "ZZ[1/6] in half-weight 4", where we provide a first nontrivial example of a Kim function on a surface. Central to our approach to Chabauty-Kim theory (as developed in works by S. Wewers, D. Corwin, and the first author) is the possibility of separating the geometric part of the computation from its arithmetic context. However, we find that in this case the geometric step grows beyond the bounds of standard algorithms running on current computers. Therefore, some ingenuity is needed to solve this seemingly straightforward problem, and our new Kim function is huge.

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{I}_{d,g,R}$ be the union of irreducible components of the Hilbert scheme whose general points parametrize smooth, irreducible, curves of degree $d$, genus $g$, which are non--degenerate in the projective space $\mathbb{P}^R$. Under some numerical assumptions on $d$, $g$ and $R$, we construct irreducible components of $\mathcal{I}_{d,g,R}$ other than the so-called {\em distinguished component}, dominating the moduli space $\mathcal{M}_g$ of smooth genus--$g$ curves, which are generically smooth and turn out to be of dimension higher than the expected one. The general point of any such a component corresponds to a curve $X \subset \mathbb{P}^R$ which is a suitable ramified $m$--cover of an irrational curve $Y \subset \mathbb{P}^{R-1}$, $m \geqslant 2$, lying in a surface cone over $Y$. The paper extends some of the results in previous papers of Y. Choi, H. Iliev, S. Kim (cf. [12,13] in Bibliography).

Abstract:We give refined methods for proving finiteness of the Chabauty--Coleman--Kim set $X(\mathbb{Q}_2 )_2 $, when $X$ is a hyperelliptic curve with a rational Weierstrass point. The main developments are methods for computing Selmer conditions at $2$ and $\infty$ for the mod 2 Bloch--Kato Selmer group associated to the higher Chow group $\mathrm{CH}^2 (\mathrm{Jac}(X),1)$. As a result we show that most genus 2 curves in the LMFDB of Mordell--Weil rank 2 with exactly one rational Weierstrass point satsify $\# X(\mathbb{Q}_2 )_2 <\infty $. We also obtain a field-theoretic description of second descent on the Jacobian of a hyperelliptic curve (under some conditions).

Abstract:Complex rational curves have been used to represent circular splines as well as many classical curves including epicycloids, cardioids, Joukowski profiles, and the lemniscate of Bernoulli. Complex rational curves are known to have low degree (typically half the degree of the corresponding rational planar curve), circular precision, invariance with respect to Möbius transformations, special implicit forms, an easy detection procedure, and a fast algorithm for computing their μ-bases. But only certain very special rational planar curves are also complex rational curves. To construct a wider collection of curves with similar appealing properties, we generalize complex rational curves to hyperbolic and parabolic rational curves by invoking the hyperbolic and parabolic numbers. We show that the special properties of complex rational curves extend to these hyperbolic and parabolic rational curves. We also provide examples to flesh out the theory.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with rational curves on real classical groups. Our contributions are three-fold: (i) We determine the structure of quadratic rational curves on real classical groups. As a consequence, we completely classify quadratic rational curves on $\mathrm{U}_n$, $\mathrm{O}_n(\mathbb{R})$, $\mathrm{O}_{n-1,1}(\mathbb{R})$ and $\mathrm{O}_{n-2,2}(\mathbb{R})$. (ii) We prove a decomposition theorem for rational curves on real classical groups, which can be regarded as a non-commutative generalization of the fundamental theorem of algebra and partial fraction decomposition. (iii) As an application of (i) and (ii), we generalize Kempe's Universality Theorem to rational curves on homogeneous spaces.

Abstract:We present a preliminary investigation of algebraic surfaces that have non-planar degenerations, along with their Galois covers and fundamental groups. Specifically, we investigate the tetrahedron and the double tetrahedron. The resulting fundamental groups indicate that the tetrahedron and the double tetrahedron are in different components of the moduli space of algebraic surfaces.

A Remark on Fujino's work on the canonical bundle formula via period maps

Abstract:Fujino gave a proof in [Fuj03] for the semi-ampleness of the moduli part in the canonical bundle formula in the case when the general fibers are K3 surfaces or Abelian varieties. We show a similar statement when the general fibers are primitive symplectic varieties with mild singularities. This answers a question of Fujino raised in the same article. Moreover, using the structure theory of varieties with trivial first Chern class, we reduce the question of semi-ampleness in the case of families of K-trivial varieties to a question when the general fibers satisfy a slightly weaker Calabi-Yau condition.

Abstract:This paper introduces explicit Galois cohomological methods for determining the ranks of Bloch--Kato Selmer groups associated to the Tate twists of the 2-adic second étale cohomology of the Jacobian of a hyperelliptic curve with a rational Weierstrass point. In particular, this can give a method to determine the rational points on such curves via the Chabauty--Coleman--Kim method. This is applied to answer a question of Bugeaud, Mignotte, Siksek, Stoll and Tengely.

Abstract:Let be a nonempty subset of the set of prime numbers which is either equal to the entire set of prime numbers or of cardinality one. In the present paper, we continue our study of the pro- fundamental groups of hyperbolic curves and their associated configuration spaces over algebraically closed fields in which the primes of are invertible. The present paper focuses on the topic of comparison between the theory developed in earlier papers concerning pro- fundamental groups and various discrete versions of this theory. We begin by developing a theory concerning certain combinatorial analogues of the section conjecture and Grothendieck conjecture. This portion of the theory is purely combinatorial and essentially follows from a result concerning the existence of fixed points of actions of finite groups on finite graphs (satisfying certain conditions). We then examine various applications of this purely combinatorial theory to scheme theory. Next, we verify various results in the theory of discrete fundamental groups of hyperbolic topological surfaces to the effect that various properties of (discrete) subgroups of such groups hold if and only if analogous properties hold for the closures of these subgroups in the profinite completions of the discrete fundamental groups under consideration. These results make possible a fairly straightforward translation, into discrete versions, of pro- results obtained in previous papers by the authors. Finally, we discuss a construction that was considered previously by M. Boggi in the discrete case from the point of view of the present paper.

The Bieri-Neumann-Strebel sets of quasi-projective groups

Abstract:Let $X$ be a smooth complex quasi-projective variety and $\Gamma=\pi_1(X)$. Let $\chi \colon \Gamma \to \mathbb{R}$ be an additive character. We prove that the ray $[\chi]$ does not belong to the BNS set $\Sigma(\Gamma)$ if and only if it comes as a pullback along an algebraic fibration $f \colon X \to \mathcal{C}$ over a quasi-projective hyperbolic orbicurve $\mathcal{C}$. We also prove that if $\pi_1(X)$ admits a solvable quotient which is not virtually nilpotent, there exists a finite étale cover $X_1 \to X$ and a fibration $f \colon X_1 \to \mathcal{C}$ over a quasi-projective hyperbolic orbicurve $\mathcal{C}$. Both of these results were proved by Delzant in the case when $X$ is a compact Kähler manifold. We deduce that $\Gamma$ is virtually solvable if and only if it is virtually nilpotent, generalising the theorems of Delzant and Arapura-Nori. As a byproduct, we prove a version of Simpson's Lefschetz Theorem for the integral leaves of logarithmic $1$-forms that do not extend to any partial compactification. We give two applications of our results. First, we strengthen the recent theorem of Cadorel-Deng-Yamanoi on virtual nilpotency of fundamental groups of quasi-projective $h$-special and weakly special manifolds. Second, we prove the sharpness of Suciu's tropical bound for the fundamental groups of smooth quasi-projective varieties and answer a question of Suciu on the topology of hyperplane arrangements.

Abstract:Browning and Vishe used the Hardy-Littlewood circle method to show the moduli space of rational curves on smooth hypersurfaces of low degree is irreducible and of the expected dimension. We reinterpret the circle method geometrically and prove a generalization for higher genus smooth projective curves. In particular, we explain how the geometry of numbers can be understood via the Beauville-Laszlo theorem in terms of vector bundles on curves and their slopes, allowing us to prove a higher genus variant of Davenport's shrinking lemma. As a corollary, we apply this result to show the Fujita invariant of any proper subvariety of a smooth hypersurface of low degree is less than 1.

Abstract:We determine the rational class and Picard groups of the moduli space of stable logarithmic maps in genus zero, with target projective space relative a hyperplane. For the class group we exhibit an explicit basis consisting of boundary divisors. For the Picard group we exhibit a spanning set indexed by piecewise-linear functions on the tropicalisation. In both cases a complete set of boundary relations is obtained by pulling back the WDVV relations from the space of stable curves. Our proofs hinge on a controlled technique for manufacturing test curves in logarithmic mapping spaces, opening up the topology of these spaces to further study.

Rational Points of some genus $3$ curves from the rank $0$ quotient strategy

Abstract:In 1922, Mordell conjectured that the set of rational points on a smooth curve $C$ over $\mathbb{Q}$ with genus $g \ge 2$ is finite. This has been proved by Faltings in 1983. However, Coleman determined in 1985 an upper bound of $#C(\mathbb{Q})$ by following Chabauty's approach which considers the special case when the Jacobian variety of $C$ has Mordell-Weil rank $< g$. In 2006, Stoll improved the Coleman's bound. Balakrishnan with her co-authors in [1] implemented the Chabauty-Coleman method to compute the rational points of genus $3$ hyperelliptic curves. Then, Hashimoto and Morrison [8] did the same work for Picard curves. But it happens that this work has not yet been done for all genus 3 curves. In this paper, we describe an algorithm to compute the complete set of rational points $C(\mathbb{Q})$ for any genus $3$ curve $C/\mathbb{Q}$ that is a degree-$2$ cover of a genus $1$ curve whose Jacobian has rank $0$. We implemented this algorithm in Magma, and we ran it on approximately $40, 000$ curves selected from databases of plane quartics and genus $3$ hyperellitic curves. We discuss some interesting examples, and we exhibit curves for which the number of rational points meets the Stoll's bound

Abstract:We showcase a computation of the fundamental group of $\mathbb{CP}^2 - \mathcal{C}$ when $\mathcal{C}$ is a curve admitting a lot of symmetries. In particular, let $\mathcal{C}$ denote the Fermat line arrangement in $\mathbb{CP}^2$ defined by the vanishing locus of homogeneous polynomial $(x^n-y^n)(y^n-z^n)(z^n-x^n)$. In this article, we compute the fundamental group $\pi_1(\mathbb{CP}^2-\mathcal{C})$ of complement of this line arrangement in the complex projective plane. We show that this group is semi-direct product of $G$ and $F_n$, i.e., $\pi_1(\mathbb{CP}^2-\mathcal{C}, \overline{\epsilon}) = G \rtimes F_{n}$, where $G$ and $F_n$ is defined in 4.3, and 1.2 respectively.
