Abstract:The spectral landscape and the transport property of a translationally invariant network with side-coupled quantum dots are demonstrated within the tight-binding framework. For periodic environment band structure is demonstrated analytically in details. Moreover, if the side-coupling here follows a typical quasiperiodic Aubry-Andre-Harper type of modulation then such off-diagonal disorder invites an exotic spectral feature for this model quantum system. We perform an in-depth numerical analysis followed by the evaluation of the density of eigenstates and the inverse participation ratio. The description shows that this network creates a typical self-similar kind of multifractal pattern in the energy landscape. The impacts of the strength of such aperiodic connectivity and the slowness parameter are reported in this analysis. In the present era of advanced technology and lithography techniques all such non-trivial results definitely throw an achievable challenge to the experimentalists to study the localization of excitation in such network

Abstract:Quantum graphs were introduced to model free electrons in organic molecules using a self-adjoint Hamiltonian on a network of intervals. A second graph quantization describes wave propagation on a graph by specifying scattering matrices at the vertices. A question that is frequently raised is the extent to which these models are the same or complementary. In particular, are all energy independent unitary vertex scattering matrices associated with a self-adjoint Hamiltonian? Here we review results related to this issue. In addition, we observe that a self-adjoint Dirac operator with four component spinors produces a secular equation for the graph spectrum that matches the secular equation associated with wave propagation on the graph when the Dirac operator describes particles with zero mass and the vertex conditions do not allow spin rotation at the vertices.

Abstract:We consider a random family of Dirac operators on $N$ parallel real lines, modelling for example a graphene nanoribbon. We establish a localization criterion involving properties on the group generated by transfer matrices. In particular, we consider not only the case where this group is the symplectic group but also a strict subgroup of it. We establish under quite general hypotheses that the sum of the Lyapunov exponents and the integrated density of states are Hölder continuous. Moreover, for a set of concrete cases where the potentials are on Pauli matrices, we compute the transfer matrices and prove either localization or delocalization, depending on the potential and on the parity of $N$.

Localization in 2D Quantum percolation

Abstract:Quantum site percolation as a limiting case of binary alloy is studied numerically in 2D within the tight-binding model. We address the transport properties in all regimes - ballistic, diffusive (metallic), localized and crossover between the latter two. Special attention is given to the region close to the conduction band center, but even there the Anderson localization persists, without signs of metal - insulator transition. We found standard localization for sufficiently large samples. For smaller systems, novel partial quantization of Landauer conductances, i. e. most values close to small integers in arbitrary units is observed at band center. The crossover types of conductance distributions (outside the band center) are found to be similar to systems with corrugated surfaces. Universal conductance fluctuations in metallic regime are shown to approach the known, theoretically predicted value. The resonances in localized regime are Pendry necklaces. We tested Pendry's conjecture on the probability of such rare conducting samples and it proved consistent with our numerical results.

Abstract:We consider the properties of the random regular graph with node degree $d$ perturbed by chemical potentials $\mu_k$ for a number of short $k$-cycles. We analyze both numerically and analytically the phase diagram of the model in the $(\mu_k,d)$ plane. The critical curve separating the homogeneous and clusterized phases is found and it is demonstrated that the clusterized phase itself generically is separated as the function of $d$ into the phase with ideal clusters and phase with coupled ones when the continuous spectrum gets formed. The eigenstate spatial structure of the model is investigated and it is found that there are localized scar-like states in the delocalized part of the spectrum, that are related to the topologically equivalent nodes in the graph. We also reconsider the localization of the states in the non-perturbative band formed by eigenvalue instantons and find the semi-Poisson level spacing distribution. The Anderson transition for the case of combined ($k$-cycle) structural and diagonal (Anderson) disorders is investigated. It is found that the critical diagonal disorder gets reduced sharply at the clusterization phase transition, but does it unevenly in non-perturbative and mid-spectrum bands, due to the scars, present in the latter. The applications of our findings to $2$d quantum gravity are discussed.

Abstract:We show that, for one-dimensional discrete Schrödinger operators, stability of Anderson localization under a class of rank one perturbations implies absence of intervals in spectra. The argument is based on well-known result of Gordon and del Rio--Makarov--Simon, combined with a way to consider perturbations whose ranges are not necessarily cyclic. The main application of the results is showing that a class of quasiperiodic operators with sawtooth-like potentials, for which such a version of stable localization is known, has Cantor spectra. We also obtain several results on gap filling under rank one perturbations for some general (not necessarily monotone) classes of quasiperiodic operators with discontinuous potentials.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove pure point spectrum for a large class of Schrödinger operators over circle maps with conditions on the rotation number going beyond the Diophantine. More specifically, we develop the scheme to obtain pure point spectrum for Schrödinger operators with monotone bi-Lipschitz potentials over orientation-preserving circle homeomorphisms with Diophantine or weakly Liouville rotation number. The localization is uniform when the coupling constant is large enough.

Abstract:We analyze the spectrum of a periodic quantum graph of the Cairo lattice form. The used vertex coupling violates the time reversal invariance and its high-energy behavior depends on the vertex degree parity; in the considered example both odd and even parities are involved. The presence of the former implies that the spectrum is dominated by gaps. In addition, we discuss two modifications of the model in which this is not the case, the zero limit of the length parameter in the coupling, and the sign switch of the coupling matrix at the vertices of degree three; while different they both yield the same probability that a randomly chosen positive energy lies in the spectrum.

Abstract:We study quantum quenches in two-dimensional lattice gauge theories with fermions coupled to dynamical $\mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge fields. Through the identification of an extensive set of conserved quantities, we propose a generic mechanism of charge localization in the absence of quenched disorder both in the Hamiltonian and in the initial states. We provide diagnostics of this localization through a set of experimentally relevant dynamical measures, entanglement measures, as well as spectral properties of the model. One of the defining features of the models that we study is a binary nature of emergent disorder, related to $\mathbb{Z}_2$ degrees of freedom. This results in a qualitatively different behaviour in the strong disorder limit compared to typically studied models of localization. For example it gives rise to a possibility of a delocalization transition via a mechanism of quantum percolation in dimensions higher than 1D. We highlight the importance of our general phenomenology to questions related to dynamics of defects in Kitaev's toric code, and to quantum quenches in Hubbard models. While the simplest models we consider are effectively non-interacting, we also include interactions leading to many-body localization-like logarithmic entanglement growth. Finally, we consider effects of interactions that generate dynamics for conserved charges, which gives rise to only transient localization behaviour, or quasi-many-body-localization.

Galactic Halo Models and Particle Dark-Matter Detection

Abstract:Rates for detection of weakly-interacting massive-particle (WIMP) dark matter are usually carried out assuming the Milky Way halo is an isothermal sphere. However, it is possible that our halo is not precisely spherical; it may have some bulk rotation; and the radial profile may differ from that of an isothermal sphere. In this paper, we calculate detection rates in observationally consistent alternative halo models that produce the same halo contributions to the local and asymptotic rotation speeds to investigate the effects of theoretical uncertainty of the WIMP spatial and velocity distribution. We use self-consistent models to take into account the effects of various mass distributions on the local velocity distribution. The local halo density may be increased up to a factor of 2 by flattening or by an alternative radial profile (which may also decrease the density slightly). However, changes in the WIMP velocity distribution in these models produce only negligible changes in the WIMP detection rate. Reasonable bulk rotations lead to only an $O(10%)$ effect on event rates. We also show how the nuclear recoil spectrum in a direct-detection experiment could provide information on the shape and rotation of the halo.

Abstract:It is often overlooked that local quantum physics has a built in quantum localization structure which may under certain circumstances disagree with (differential, algebraic) geometric ideas. String theory originated from such a spectacular misinterpretation of a source-target embedding in which an inner symmetry of the source object becomes the Lorentz symmetry of the target space. The quantum localization reveals however that the resulting object is an infinite component pointlike field. There are also other other areas in QFT which suffered from having followed geometrical metaphors and payed too little attention to the autonomous localization properties. This will be illustrated in the concrete context of three examples. We also show that "modular localization ", i.e. the intrinsic localization theory of local quantum quantum physics, leads to a radiacal new way of looking at (nonperturbative) QFT. For the first time in the history of QFT there are now existence theorems for a class of strictly renormalizable (i.e. not superrenormalizable) factorizable QFTs which are based on these new concepts. The paper ends with some worrisome sociological observations about the state of particle physics and the direction in which it is heading. These remarks are based on the results presented in the three previous sections.

Localization and spectrum of quasiparticles in a disordered fermionic Dicke model

Abstract:We study a fermionic two-band model with the interband transition resonantly coupled to a cavity. This model was recently proposed to explain cavity-enhanced charge transport, but a thorough characterization of the closed system, in particular localization of various excitations, is lacking. In this work, using exact diagonalization, we characterize the system by its spectrum under various filling factors and variable disorder. As in the Dicke model, the effective light-matter coupling scales with the square root of the system size. However, there is an additional factor that decreases with increasing doping density. The transition from the weak-coupling regime to the strong-coupling regime occurs when the effective light-matter coupling is larger than the electronic bandwidth. Here, the formation of exciton-polaritons is accompanied by the formation of bound excitons. Photon spectral functions exhibit significant weights on the in-gap states between the polaritons, even without disorder. Finally, while the localization of electron-hole excitations in a disordered system is lifted by strong coupling, the same is not true for free charges, which remain localized at strong and even ultrastrong coupling. Based on this finding, we discuss scenarios for charge transport.

Abstract:We consider certain quantum spectral problems appearing in the study of local Calabi-Yau geometries. The quantum spectrum can be computed by the Bohr-Sommerfeld quantization condition for a period integral. For the case of small Planck constant, the periods are computed perturbatively by deformation of the Ω background parameters in the Nekrasov-Shatashvili limit. We compare the calculations with the results from the standard perturbation theory for the quantum Hamiltonian. There have been proposals in the literature for the non-perturbative contributions based on singularity cancellation with the perturbative contributions. We compute the quantum spectrum numerically with some high precisions for many cases of Planck constant. We find that there are also some higher order non-singular non-perturbative contributions, which are not captured by the singularity cancellation mechanism. We fix the first few orders formulas of such corrections for some well known local Calabi-Yau models.
Quantum Circuits Reproduce Experimental Two-dimensional Many-body Localization Transition Point

Abstract:While many studies point towards the existence of many-body localization (MBL) in one dimension, the fate of higher-dimensional strongly disordered systems is a topic of current debate. The latest experiments as well as several recent numerical studies indicate that such systems behave many-body localized -- at least on practically relevant time scales. However, thus far, theoretical approaches have been unable to quantitatively reproduce experimentally measured MBL features -- an important requirement to demonstrate their validity. In this work, we use fermionic quantum circuits as a variational method to approximate the full set of eigenstates of two-dimensional MBL systems realized in fermionic optical lattice experiments. Using entanglement-based features, we obtain a phase transition point in excellent agreement with the experimentally measured value. Moreover, we calculate, the filling fraction-dependent MBL phase diagram, an important feature which has not been addressed in previous literature. We argue that our approach best captures the underlying charge-density-wave experiments and compute the mean localization lengths, which can be compared to future experiments.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the spectral properties of a family of discrete one‐dimensional quasi‐periodic Schrödinger operators (depending on a phase theta). In large disorder, under some suitable conditions on v and a diophantine rotation number, we prove using basically KAM theory that the spectrum of this operator is pure point for all θ∈[0,2π) with exponential decaying eigenfunctions.

Abstract:We consider a particle governed by a one-dimensional Hamiltonian in which artificial periodic spin-orbit coupling and Zeeman lattice have incommensurate periods. Using best rational approximations to such quasiperiodic Hamiltonian, the problem is reduced to description of spinor states in a superlattice. In the absence of a constant Zeeman splitting, the system acquires an additional symmetry, which hinders the localization. However, if the lattices are deep enough, then localized states can appear even for Zeeman field with zero or small mean value. Spatial distribution of localized modes is nearly uniform and is directly related to the topological properties of the effective superlattice: center-of-mass coordinates of modes are determined by Zak phases computed from the superlattice band structure. The best rational approximations feature the `memory' effect: each rational approximation holds the information about the energies and spatial distribution of the modes obtained under preceding, less accurate approximations. Dispersion of low-energy initial wavepackets is characterized by the law $\propto t^\beta$ with $\beta$ varying between $1/2$ at the initial stage and $1$ at longer, but still finite-time, evolution. The dynamics of initial wavepackets, exciting mainly localized modes, manifests quantum revivals.

Abstract:The obstruction to constructing localized degrees of freedom is a signature of several interesting condensed matter phases. We introduce a localization renormalization procedure that harnesses this property, and apply our method to distinguish between topological and trivial phases in quantum Hall and Chern insulators. By iteratively removing a fraction of maximally-localized orthogonal basis states, we find that the localization length in the residual Hilbert space exhibits a power-law divergence as the fraction of remaining states approaches zero, with an exponent of $\nu=0.5$. In sharp contrast, the localization length converges to a system-size-independent constant in the trivial phase. We verify this scaling using a variety of algorithms to truncate the Hilbert space, and show that it corresponds to a statistically self-similar expansion of the real-space projector. This result accords with a renormalization group picture and motivates the use of localization renormalization as a versatile numerical diagnostic for quantum Hall systems.
