Abstract:We calculate the cordial edge deficiencies of the complete multipartite graphs and find an upper bound for their cordial vertex deficiencies. We also give conditions under which the tensor product of two cordial graphs is cordial.

Abstract:An undirected graph is said to be cordial if there is a friendly (0,1)-labeling of the vertices that induces a friendly (0,1)-labeling of the edges. An undirected graph $G$ is said to be $(2,3)$-orientable if there exists a friendly (0,1)-labeling of the vertices of $G$ such that about one third of the edges are incident to vertices labeled the same. That is, there is some digraph that is an orientation of $G$ that is $(2,3)$-cordial. Examples of the smallest noncordial/non-$(2,3)$-orientable graphs are given and upper bounds on the possible number of edges in a cordial/$(2,3)$-orientable graph are presented. It is also shown that if $T$ is a linear operator on the set of all undirected graphs on $n$ vertices that strongly preserves the set of cordial graphs or the set of $(2,3)$-orientable graphs then $T$ is a vertex permutation..

Abstract:The cordiality game is played on a graph G by two players, Admirable (A) and Impish (I), who take turns selecting unlabeled vertices of G . Admirable labels the selected vertices by 0 and Impish by 1, and the resulting label on any edge is the sum modulo 2 of the labels of the vertices incident to that edge. The two players have opposite goals: Admirable attempts to minimize the number of edges with different labels as much as possible while Impish attempts to maximize this number. When both Admirable and Impish play their optimal games, we define the game cordiality number , , as the absolute difference between the number of edges labeled zero and one. Let be the path on n vertices. We show when , when , and when . Furthermore, we show a similar bound, holds for any tree T .

Abstract:A graph $G$ is cordial if there exists a function $f$ from the vertices of $G$ to $\{0,1\}$ such that the number of vertices labelled $0$ and the number of vertices labelled $1$ differ by at most $1$, and if we assign to each edge $xy$ the label $|f(x)-f(y)|$, the number of edges labelled $0$ and the number of edges labelled $1$ also differ at most by $1$. We introduce two measures of how close a graph is to being cordial, and compute these measures for a variety of classes of graphs.

Abstract:Let be a polynomial ring over a filed . The edge ideal of a graph G is the monomial ideal, denoted by , whose generators correspond to the edges in G . The quotient ring is called the edge ring of G . In this paper, we study the minimal graded free resolution of edge ring of a k -partite n -crown graph . We give a combinatorial formula for the graded Betti numbers in the linear strand of . We also determine the Hilbert series of the edge ring both in terms of i -faces of its independence complex and the graded Betti numbers of its edge ring. We then compare these Hilbert Series and derive a combinatorial formula for other graded Betti numbers of . As a consequence, we also determine the extremal graded Betti number of the edge ring of a partite crown graph . Moreover, we determine the projective dimension and the Castelnuovo–Mumford regularity of the edge rings of these graphs.

Abstract:A proper edge coloring of a graph <math>G</math> with colors <math>1,2,…,t</math> is called a cyclic interval <math>t</math>-coloring if for each vertex <math>v</math> of <math>G</math> the edges incident to <math>v</math> are colored by consecutive colors, under the condition that color 1 is considered as consecutive to color <math>t</math>. In this paper we introduce and investigate a new notion, the cyclic deficiency of a graph <math>G</math>, defined as the minimum number of pendant edges whose attachment to <math>G</math> yields a graph admitting a cyclic interval coloring; this number can be considered as a measure of closeness of <math>G</math> of being cyclically interval colorable. We determine or bound the cyclic deficiency of several families of graphs. In particular, we present examples of graphs of bounded maximum degree with arbitrarily large cyclic deficiency, and graphs whose cyclic deficiency approaches the number of vertices. Finally, we conjecture that the cyclic deficiency of any graph does not exceed the number of vertices, and we present several results supporting this conjecture.

On Induced Versions of Menger's Theorem on Sparse Graphs

Abstract:Let $A$ and $B$ be sets of vertices in a graph $G$. Menger's theorem states that for every positive integer $k$, either there exists a collection of $k$ vertex-disjoint paths between $A$ and $B$, or $A$ can be separated from $B$ by a set of at most $k-1$ vertices. Let $\Delta$ be the maximum degree of $G$. We show that there exists a function $f(\Delta) = (\Delta+1)^{\Delta^2+1}$, so that for every positive integer $k$, either there exists a collection of $k$ vertex-disjoint and pairwise anticomplete paths between $A$ and $B$, or $A$ can be separated from $B$ by a set of at most $k \cdot f(\Delta)$ vertices. We also show that the result can be generalized from bounded-degree graphs to graphs excluding a topological minor. On the negative side, we show that no such relation holds on graphs that have degeneracy 2 and arbitrarily large girth, even when $k = 2$. Similar results were obtained independently and concurrently by Hendrey, Norin, Steiner, and Turcotte [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2309.07905" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2309.07905">arXiv:2309.07905</a>].

Abstract:We study the maximum number of edges in an $n$ vertex graph with Colin de Verdière parameter no more than $t$. We conjecture that for every integer $t$, if $G$ is a graph with at least $t$ vertices and Colin de Verdière parameter at most $t$, then $|E(G)| \leq t|V(G)|-\binom{t+1}{2}$. We observe a relation to the graph complement conjecture for the Colin de Verdière parameter and prove the conjectured edge upper bound for graphs $G$ such that either $\mu(G) \leq 7$, or $\mu(G) \geq |V(G)|-6$, or the complement of $G$ is chordal, or $G$ is chordal.

Abstract:The bounded edge-connectivity λk(G) of a connected graph G with respect to k(≥d(G)) is the minimum number of edges in G whose deletion from G results in a subgraph with diameter larger than k and the edge-persistence D+(G) is defined as λd(G)(G), where d(G) is the diameter of G. This paper considers the Cartesian product G1×G2, shows λk1+k2(G1×G2)≥λk1(G1)+λk2(G2) for k1≥2 and k2≥2, and determines the exact values of D+(G) for G=Cn×Pm, Cn×Cm, Qn×Pm and Qn×Cm.
Deficiency of p-Class Tower Groups and Minkowski Units

Abstract:Let $p$ be a prime. We define the deficiency of a finitely-generated pro-$p$ group $G$ to be $r(G)-d(G)$ where $d(G)$ is the minimal number of generators of $G$ and $r(G)$ is its minimal number of relations. For a number field $K$, let $K_\emptyset$ be the maximal unramified $p$-extension of $K$, with Galois group $G_\emptyset = Gal(K_\emptyset/K)$. In the 1960s, Shafarevich (and independently Koch) showed that the deficiency of $G_\emptyset$ satisfies $$0\leq \mathrm{Def}({\rm G}_\emptyset) \leq dim (O_K^\times/(O_K^{\times })^p),$$ relating the deficiency of $G_\emptyset$ to the $p$-rank of the unit group $O_K^\times$ of the ring of integers $O_K$ of $K$. In this work, we further explore connections between relations of the group $G_\emptyset$ and the units in the tower $K_\emptyset/K$, especially their Galois module structure. In particular, under the assumption that $K$ does not contain a primitive $p$th root of unity, we give an exact formula for $\mathrm{Def}({\rm G}_\emptyset)$ in terms of the number of independent Minkowski units in the tower. The method also allows us to infer more information about the relations of G$_\emptyset$, such as their depth in the Zassenhaus filtration, which in certain circumstances makes it easier to show that G$_\emptyset$ is infinite. We illustrate how the techniques can be used to provide evidence for the expectation that the Shafarevich-Koch upper bound is "almost always" sharp.

Chordal graphs, even-hole-free graphs and sparse obstructions to bounded treewidth

Abstract:We present and study the following conjecture: for an integer $t\geq 4$ and a graph $H$, every even-hole-free graph of large enough treewidth has an induced subgraph isomorphic to either $K_t$ or $H$, if (and only if) $H$ is a $K_4$-free chordal graph. The ``only if'' part follows from the properties of the so-called layered wheels due to Sintiari and Trotignon. Alecu, Chudnovsky, Spirkl and the author recently proved the conjecture in two special cases: (a) when $t=4$; and (b) when $H=cone (F)$ for some forest $F$; that is, $H$ is obtained from $F$ by adding a universal vertex. Our first result is a common strengthening: for an integer $t\geq 4$ and graphs $F$ and $H$, (even-hole, $cone(cone (F))$, $H$, $K_t$)-free graphs have bounded treewidth if and only if $F$ is a forest and $H$ is a $K_4$-free chordal graph. Also, for general $t\geq 4$, we push the current state of the art further than (b) by settling the conjecture for the smallest choices of $H$ that are not coned forests. This follows from our second result: we prove the conjecture when $H$ is a crystal; that is, a graph obtained from several coned double stars by gluing them together along the middle edges of the double stars. In the first version of this paper, we suggested a strengthening of our main conjecture, that for every $t\geq 1$, every graph of sufficiently large treewidth has an induced subgraph of treewidth $t$ which is either complete, complete bipartite, or $2$-degenerate. This strengthening has now been refuted by Chudnovsky and Trotignon [On treewidth and maximum cliques, <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2405.07471" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2405.07471">arXiv:2405.07471</a>, 2024].

A Ramsey-type theorem on deficiency

Abstract:Ramsey's Theorem states that a graph $G$ has bounded order if and only if $G$ contains no complete graph $K_n$ or empty graph $E_n$ as its induced subgraph. The Gyárfás-Sumner conjecture says that a graph $G$ has bounded chromatic number if and only if it contains no induced subgraph isomorphic to $K_n$ or a tree $T$. The deficiency of a graph is the number of vertices that cannot be covered by a maximum matching. In this paper, we prove a Ramsey type theorem for deficiency, i.e., we characterize all the forbidden induced subgraphs for graphs $G$ with bounded deficiency. As an application, we answer a question proposed by Fujita, Kawarabayashi, Lucchesi, Ota, Plummer and Saito (JCTB, 2006).

Partially symmetric tensors and the non-defectivity of secant varieties of products with a projective line as a factor

Abstract:We prove (with a mild restriction on the multidegrees) that all secant varieties of Segre-Veronese varieties with $k>2$ factors, $k-2$ of them being $\mathbb{P}^1$, have the expected dimension. This is equivalent to compute the dimension of the set of all partially symmetric tensors with a fixed rank and the same format. The proof uses the case $k=2$ proved by Galuppi and Oneto. Our theorem is an easy consequence of a theorem proved here for arbitrary projective varieties with a projective line as a factor and with respect to complete linear systems.

Abstract:In this paper we prove the conjectured upper bound for Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of binomial edge ideals posed in [23], in the case of chordal graphs. Indeed, we show that the regularity of any chordal graph G is bounded above by the number of maximal cliques of G, denoted by c(G). Moreover, we classify all chordal graphs G for which L(G) = c(G), where L(G) is the sum of the lengths of longest induced paths of connected components of G. We call such graphs strongly interval graphs. Moreover, we show that the regularity of a strongly interval graph G coincides with L(G) as well as c(G).

Abstract:Perfect graphs form one of the distinguished classes of finite simple graphs. In 2006, Chudnovsky, Robertson, Seymour and Thomas proved that a graph is perfect if and only if it has no odd holes and no odd antiholes as induced subgraphs, which was conjectured by Berge. We consider the class ${\mathcal A}$ of graphs that have no odd holes, no antiholes and no odd stretchers as induced subgraphs. In particular, every graph belonging to ${\mathcal A}$ is perfect. Everett and Reed conjectured that a graph belongs to ${\mathcal A}$ if and only if it is perfectly contractile. In the present paper, we discuss graphs belonging to ${\mathcal A}$ from a viewpoint of commutative algebra. In fact, we conjecture that a perfect graph $G$ belongs to ${\mathcal A}$ if and only if the toric ideal of the stable set polytope of $G$ is generated by quadratic binomials. Especially, we show that this conjecture is true for Meyniel graphs, perfectly orderable graphs, and clique separable graphs, which are perfectly contractile graphs.

Abstract:A graph G is said to be strongly Menger edge-connected (SM- λ for short) if for every two of its vertices u and v , there are min{dG(u),dG(v)} ) edge-disjoint paths between them, where dG(u) is the degree of u in G . The maximum conditional edge-fault-tolerant number of order r with respect to the SM- λ property of G , denoted by smλr(G) , is the maximum integer m such that G−F remains SM- λ for every edge set F with |F|≤m and δ(G−F)≥r . So far, most of the exact values of smλr(G) are for the case r≤2 for special class of graphs. In this paper, we give a sufficient condition to give a bound of smλr(G) for general r on regular graphs. As an application, we determine the exact value of smλ2r−1(AQn) for 1≤r≤n−2 where AQn is the n -dimensional augmented cube.

Abstract:Let . Motivated by the notion of jumbled graphs introduced by Thomason, the expander mixing lemma and Haemers's vertex separation inequality, we say that a graph G with n vertices is a weakly -graph if holds for every pair of disjoint proper subsets X , Y of V ( G ) with no edge between X and Y . It is an -graph if in addition X and Y are not necessarily disjoint. Using graph eigenvalues, we show that every graph can be an -graph and/or a weakly -graph for some specific value . For instances, the expander mixing lemma implies that a d -regular graph on n vertices with the second largest absolute eigenvalue at most is an -graph, and Haemers's vertex separation inequality implies that every graph is a weakly -graph with , where denotes the i -th smallest Laplacian eigenvalue. This motivates us to study -graph and weakly -graph in general. Our main results include the following. (i) For any weakly -graph G , the matching number . If in addition G is a ( U , W )-bipartite graph with where , then . (ii) For any -graph G , If in addition G is a ( U , W )-bipartite graph with and no isolated vertices, then . (iii) If G is a weakly -graph for or an -graph for , then G has a fractional perfect matching. In addition, G has a perfect matching when n is even and G is factor-critical when n is odd. (iv) For any connected -graph G , the toughness . For any connected weakly -graph G , and if n is large enough, then for any . The results imply many old and new results in spectral graph theory, including several new lower bounds on matching number, fractional matching number and toughness from eigenvalues. In particular, we obtain a new lower bound on toughness via normalized Laplacian eigenvalues that extends a theorem originally conjectured by Brouwer from regular graphs to general graphs.

Abstract:We prove that the proper amalgam of matroids $M_1$ and $M_2$ along their common restriction $N$ exists if and only if the tropical fibre product of Bergman fans ${B(M_1) \times_{B(N)} B(M_2)}$ is positive. We introduce tropical correspondences between Bergman fans as tropical subcycles in their product, similar to correspondences in algebraic geometry, and define a "graph correspondence" of the map of lattices. We prove that graph construction is a functor for the "covering" maps of lattices, exploiting a generalization of Bergman fan which we call a "Flag fan".

Characterizing graph-nonedge pairs with single interval Cayley configuration spaces in 3-dimensions

Abstract:A linkage $(G,\ell)$ is a pair containing a finite simple undirected graph $G$ and a squared edge-length map $\ell$ that assigns squared Euclidean lengths to the edges of $G$. A $d$-realization of $(G,\ell)$ is an assignment of points in $\mathbb{R}^d$ to the vertices of $G$ for which pair-wise distances between points agree with $\ell$. For $d \leq 3$, we characterize pairs $(G,f)$, where $f$ is a nonedge of $G$, such that, for any squared edge-length map $\ell$, there is a single interval of attained distance values between the endpoints of $f$ over all $d$-realizations of $(G,\ell)$, answering a question posed in \cite{sitharam2010characterizing} a decade ago, which gave an equivalent characterization for $d\le 2$ that does not generalize to $d\ge 3$. Two notable byproducts of this characterization are a new tool for partial $3$-tree completion, a well-studied problem, and a deeper understanding of the realization space of partial $3$-tree linkages through the lens of Cayley realization spaces. Although related to the minor closed class of $3$-flattenable graphs, the class of pairs $(G,f)$ with the above property is not minor closed, has no obvious well quasi-ordering, and there are infinitely many minimal graphs-nonedge pairs - w.r.t. edge contractions - in the complement class. Our characterization overcomes these obstacles, is based on the forbidden minors of the class of $3$-flattenable graphs, and contributes to the theory of Cayley configurations used for analyzing distance-constrained configuration spaces in a range of application domains. Generalizations to higher dimensions and efficient algorithmic characterizations are conjectured.
