Abstract:We introduce a new, open-source computational general relativity framework for the Wolfram Language called Gravitas, which boasts a number of novel and distinctive features as compared to the many pre-existing computational and numerical relativity frameworks currently available within the open-source community. These include, but are not limited to: seamless integration of its powerful symbolic and numerical subsystems, and, by extension, seamless transition between analytic/continuous representations and numerical/discrete representations of arbitrary spacetime geometries; highly modular, general and extensible representations of spacetime geometries, spacetime topologies, gauge conditions, coordinate systems, matter fields, evolution equations and initial data; ability to set up and run complex numerical relativity simulations, and to perform 2D and 3D visualizations, symbolic computations and numerical analysis (including the extraction of gravitational wave signals) on the resulting data, all from within a single notebook environment; and a totally-unstructured adaptive refinement scheme based on hypergraph rewriting, allowing for exceedingly efficient discretization and numerical evolution of Cauchy initial data for a wide range of challenging computational problems involving strong relativistic field dynamics. In this first in a series of two articles covering the framework, we focus on the design and capabilities of Gravitas's symbolic subsystem, including its general and flexible handling of arbitrary geometries parametrized by arbitrary curvilinear coordinate systems (along with an in-built library of standard metrics and coordinate conditions), as well as its various high-level tensor calculus and differential geometry features. We proceed to show how this subsystem can be used to solve the Einstein field equations both analytically and numerically.

This transcript should be of use to the beginning student and assumes only very basic familiarity with tensor analysis and modern notation. Abstract:This is the second in a series of two articles introducing the Gravitas computational general relativity framework, in which we now focus upon the design and capabilities of Gravitas's numerical subsystem, including its ability to perform general 3+1 decompositions of spacetime via the ADM formalism, its support for the definition and construction of arbitrary Cauchy surfaces as initial data, its support for the definition and enforcement of arbitrary gauge and coordinate conditions, its various algorithms for ensuring the satisfaction of the ADM Hamiltonian and momentum constraints, and its unique adaptive refinement algorithms based on hypergraph rewriting via Wolfram model evolution. Particular attention is paid to the seamless integration between Gravitas's symbolic and numerical subsystems, its ability to configure, run, analyze and visualize complex numerical relativity simulations and their outputs within a single notebook environment, and its capabilities for handling generic curvilinear coordinate systems and spacetimes with general (and often highly non-trivial) topologies using its specialized and highly efficient hypergraph-based numerical algorithms. We also provide illustrations of Gravitas's functionality for the visualization of hypergraph geometries and spacetime embedding diagrams, the ability for Gravitas's symbolic and numerical subsystems to be used in concert for the extraction of gravitational wave signals and other crucial simulation data, and Gravitas's in-built library of standard initial data, matter distributions and gauge conditions. We conclude by demonstrating how the numerical subsystem can be used to set up, run, visualize and analyze a standard yet nevertheless reasonably challenging numerical relativity test case: a binary black hole collision and merger within a vacuum spacetime (including the extraction of its outgoing gravitational wave profile).

A Tetrad-First Approach to Robust Numerical Algorithms in General Relativity

Abstract:General relativistic Riemann solvers are typically complex, fragile and unwieldy, at least in comparison to their special relativistic counterparts. In this paper, we present a new high-resolution shock-capturing algorithm on curved spacetimes that employs a local coordinate transformation at each inter-cell boundary, transforming all primitive and conservative variables into a locally flat spacetime coordinate basis (i.e., the tetrad basis), generalizing previous approaches developed for relativistic hydrodynamics. This algorithm enables one to employ a purely special relativistic Riemann solver, combined with an appropriate post-hoc flux correction step, irrespective of the geometry of the underlying Lorentzian manifold. We perform a systematic validation of the algorithm using the Gkeyll simulation framework for both general relativistic electromagnetism and general relativistic hydrodynamics, highlighting the algorithm's superior convergence and stability properties in each case when compared against standard analytical solutions for black hole magnetosphere and ultra-relativistic black hole accretion problems. However, as an illustration of the generality and practicality of the algorithm, we also apply it to more astrophysically realistic magnetosphere and fluid accretion problems in the limit of high black hole spin, for which standard general relativistic Riemann solvers are often too unstable to produce useful solutions.

Abstract:The aim of this work is to present a series of concrete examples which illustrate how the computer algebra system Cadabra can be used to manipulate expressions appearing in General Relativity and other gravitational theories. We highlight the way in which Cadabra's philosophy differs from other systems with related functionality. The use of various new built-in packages is discussed, and we show how such packages can also be created by end-users directly using the notebook interface.

Abstract:We give a pedagogical introduction of the essential features of General Theory of Relativity (GTR) in the format of an undergraduate (UG) project. A set of simple MATHEMATICA code is developed which enables the UG students to calculate the tensorial objects without prior knowledge of any package operation. The orbit equations of light and material particle in Minkowski and Schwarzschild spacetime are solved numerically to illustrate the crucial tests of GTR.

GRDzhadzha: A code for evolving relativistic matter on analytic metric backgrounds

Abstract:GRDzhadzha is an open-source code for relativistic simulations of matter fields on curved spacetimes that admit an analytic description (e.g. stationary black holes). It is based on the publicly available 3+1D numerical relativity code GRChombo. Such a description is valid where the density of the matter is small compared to the curvature scale of the spacetime, which is the case for many physical scenarios - for example, dark matter environments. The approach offers significant savings on memory and speed compared to running full numerical relativity simulations, since the metric variables and their derivatives are calculated analytically, and therefore are not evolved or stored on the grid. This brief paper introduces the code and gives details of some applications for which it has already been used.

Abstract:Different implementations of Clifford algebra: spinors, quaternions, and geometric algebra, are used to describe physical and technical systems. The geometric algebra formalism is a relatively new approach, destined to be used primarily by engineers and applied researchers. In a number of works, the authors examined the implementation of the geometric algebra formalism for computer algebra systems. In this article, the authors extend elliptic geometric algebra to hyperbolic space-time algebra. The results are illustrated by different representations of Maxwell's equations. Using a computer algebra system, Maxwell's vacuum equations in the space-time algebra representation are converted to Maxwell's equations in vector formalism. In addition to practical application, the authors would like to draw attention to the didactic significance of these studies.

OGRePy: An Object-Oriented General Relativity Package for Python

Abstract:We present OGRePy, the official Python port of the popular Mathematica tensor calculus package OGRe (Object-Oriented General Relativity) - a powerful, yet user-friendly, tool for advanced tensor calculations in mathematics and physics, especially suitable for general relativity. The Python port uses the same robust and performance-oriented algorithms as the original package, and retains its core design principles. However, its truly object-oriented interface, enabled by Python, is more intuitive and flexible than the original Mathematica implementation. It utilizes SymPy for symbolic computations and Jupyter as a notebook interface. OGRePy allows calculating arbitrary tensor formulas using any combination of addition, multiplication by scalar, trace, contraction, partial derivative, covariant derivative, and permutation of indices. Transformations of the tensor components between different index configurations and/or coordinate systems are performed seamlessly behind the scenes as needed, eliminating user error due to combining incompatible representations, and guaranteeing consistent results. In addition, the package provides facilities for easily calculating various curvature tensors and geodesic equations in multiple representations. This paper presents the main features of the package in great detail, including many examples of its use in the context of general relativity research.

GRoovy: A General Relativistic Hydrodynamics Code for Dynamical Spacetimes with Curvilinear Coordinates, Tabulated Equations of State, and Neutrino Physics

Abstract:Many astrophysical systems of interest to numerical relativity, such as rapidly rotating stars, black hole accretion disks, and core-collapse supernovae, exhibit near-symmetries. These systems generally consist of a strongly gravitating central object surrounded by an accretion disk, debris, and ejecta. Simulations can efficiently exploit the near-axisymmetry of these systems by reducing the number of points in the angular direction around the near-symmetry axis, enabling efficient simulations over seconds-long timescales with minimal computational expense. In this paper, we introduce GRoovy, a novel code capable of modeling astrophysical systems containing compact objects by solving the equations of general relativistic hydrodynamics (GRHD) in full general relativity using singular curvilinear (spherical-like and cylindrical-like) and Cartesian coordinates. We demonstrate the code's robustness through a battery of challenging GRHD tests, ranging from flat, static spacetimes to curved, dynamical spacetimes. These tests further showcase the code's capabilities in modeling systems with realistic, finite-temperature equations of state and neutrino cooling via a leakage scheme. GRoovy extensively leverages GRHayL, an open-source, modular, and infrastructure-agnostic general relativistic magnetohydrodynamics library built from the highly robust algorithms of IllinoisGRMHD. Long-term simulations of binary neutron star and black hole-neutron star post-merger remnants will benefit greatly from GRoovy to study phenomena such as remnant stability, gamma-ray bursts, and nucleosynthesis.

ExaGRyPE: Numerical General Relativity Solvers Based upon the Hyperbolic PDEs Solver Engine ExaHyPE

Abstract:ExaGRyPE describes a suite of solvers for numerical relativity, based upon ExaHyPE 2, the second generation of our Exascale Hyperbolic PDE Engine. The presented generation of ExaGRyPE solves the Einstein equations in the CCZ4 formulation under a 3+1 foliation and focuses on black hole spacetimes. It employs a block-structured Cartesian grid carrying a higher-order order Finite Difference scheme with adaptive mesh refinement, it facilitates massive parallelism combining message passing, domain decomposition and task parallelism, and it supports the injection of particles into the grid as data probes or tracers. We introduce the ExaGRyPE-specific building blocks within ExaHyPE 2, and discuss its software architecture and compute-n-feel: For this, we formalize the creation of any specific simulation with ExaGRyPE as a sequence of lowering operations, where abstract logical tasks are successively broken into finer tasks until we obtain an abstraction level that can be mapped onto a C++ executable. The overall program logic is fully specified via a domain-specific Python interface, we map this logic onto a more detailed set of numerical tasks, subsequently lower this representation onto technical tasks that the underlying ExaHyPE engine uses to parallelize the application, before eventually the technical tasks are mapped onto task graphs including the actual PDE term evaluations, initial conditions, boundary conditions, and so forth. We end up with a rigorous separation of concerns which shields ExaGRyPE users from technical details and hence simplifies the development of novel physical models. We present the simulations and data for the gauge wave, static single black holes and rotating binary black hole systems, demonstrating that the code base is mature and usable. However, we also uncover domain-specific numerical challenges that need further study by the community in future work.

Conformal Geometric Algebra and Galilean Spacetime

Abstract:This paper explores the use of geometric algebra to study the Galilean spacetime and its physical implications. The authors introduce the concept of geometric algebra and its advantages over tensor algebra for describing physical phenomena. They define the Galilean-spacetime algebra (GSTA) as a geometric algebra generated by a four-dimensional vector space with a degenerate metric. They show how the GSTA can be used to represent Galilean transformations, rotations, translations, and boosts. The authors also derive the general form of Galilean transformations in the GSTA and show how they preserve the scalar product and the pseudoscalar. They develop a tensor formulation of Galilean electromagnetism using the GSTA and show how it reduces to the usual Maxwell equations in the non-relativistic limit. They introduce the concept of Galilean spinors as elements of the minimal left ideals of the GSTA and show how the Galilean spinors can be used to construct the Levy-Leblond equation for a free electron and its matrix representation. They provide a suitable matrix representation for the Galilean gamma matrices and the Galilean pseudoscalar. They relate the GSTA to the four component dual numbers introduced by Majernik to express Galilean transformations and show how the dual numbers can be used to develop a Newton-Cartan theory of gravity. The paper concludes by summarizing the main results and suggesting some possible applications and extensions of the GSTA.

Abstract:The design and implementation of parallel algorithms is a fundamental task in computer algebra. Combining the computer algebra system Singular and the workflow management system GPI-Space, we have developed an infrastructure for massively parallel computations in commutative algebra and algebraic geometry. In this note, we give an overview on the current capabilities of this framework by looking into three sample applications: determining smoothness of algebraic varieties, computing GIT-fans in geometric invariant theory, and determining tropicalizations. These applications employ algorithmic methods originating from commutative algebra, sheaf structures on manifolds, local geometry, convex geometry, group theory, and combinatorics, illustrating the potential of the framework in further problems in computer algebra.

Supercomputers against strong coupling in gravity with curvature and torsion

Abstract:Many theories of gravity are spoiled by strongly coupled modes: the high computational cost of Hamiltonian analysis can obstruct the identification of these modes. A computer algebra implementation of the Hamiltonian constraint algorithm for curvature and torsion theories is presented. These non-Riemannian or Poincaré gauge theories suffer notoriously from strong coupling. The implementation forms a package (the `Hamiltonian Gauge Gravity Surveyor' - HiGGS) for the xAct tensor manipulation suite in Mathematica. Poisson brackets can be evaluated in parallel, meaning that Hamiltonian analysis can be done on silicon, and at scale. Accordingly HiGGS is designed to survey the whole Lagrangian space with high-performance computing resources (clusters and supercomputers). To demonstrate this, the space of `outlawed' Poincaré gauge theories is surveyed, in which a massive parity-even/odd vector or parity-odd tensor torsion particle accompanies the usual graviton. The survey spans possible configurations of teleparallel-style multiplier fields which might be used to kill-off the strongly coupled modes, with the results to be analysed in subsequent work. All brackets between the known primary and secondary constraints of all theories are made available for future study. Demonstrations are also given for using HiGGS - on a desktop computer - to run the Dirac-Bergmann algorithm on specific theories, such as Einstein-Cartan theory and its minimal extensions.

Conserved quantities in STEGR and applications

Abstract:We derive conservation laws in Symmetric Teleparallel Equivalent of General Relativity (STEGR) with direct application of Noether's theorem. This approach allows us to construct covariant conserved currents, corresponding superpotentials and invariant charges. A necessary component of our constructions is the concept of "turning off" gravity, introduced in the framework of STEGR to define the flat and torsionless connection. By calculating currents, one can obtain local characteristics of gravitational field like energy density. Surface integration of superpotentials gives charges which correspond to global quantities of the system like mass, momentum, etc. To test our results for the obtained currents and superpotentials, we calculate the energy density measured by freely falling observer in the simple solutions (Friedman universe, Schwartzchild black hole) and total mass of the Schwartzchild black hole. We find ambiguities in obtaining the connection, which explicitly affect the values of conserved quantities, and discuss possible solutions to this problem.

Abstract:We extend recent work on quantum geodesics on the Heisenberg algebra for flat spacetime to quantum geodesics on the algebra $D(M)$ of differential operators on a Riemannian or pseudo-Riemannian manifold $M$. The required differential structure has a hidden non-associativity for the product of 1-forms with functions at order $\hbar^2$ due the Riemann curvature, i.e. in the presence of gravity, which is not visible at the operator level. The calculus commutation relations involve the Ricci curvature. As an application, the case of $M$ spacetime provides a new approach to general relativistic quantum mechanics on curved spacetime, with an operator version of the geodesic equations in the Heisenberg picture. In the case of a static metric, there is an effective Schroedinger-like equation with an induced potential depending on the energy with respect to coordinate time. The case of $M$ a Schwarzschild black hole is exhibited in detail and the black-hole gravatom is solved. It is found that its eigenfunctions exhibit probability density banding of a fractal nature approaching the horizon.

Abstract:Contemporary relativity theory is restricted in two points: (1) a use of the Riemannian space-time geometry and (2) a use of inadequate (nonrelativistic) concepts. Reasons of these restrictions are analysed in [1]. Eliminating these restrictions the relativity theory is generalized on the case of non-Riemannian (nonaxiomatizable) space-time geometry. Taking into account a progress of a geometry and introducing adequate relativistic concepts, the elementary particle dynamics is generalized on the case of arbitrary space-time geometry. A use of adequate relativistic concepts admits one to formulate the simple demonstrable dynamics of particles.
