Abstract:A profinite group $G$ is just infinite if every closed normal subgroup of $G$ is of finite index. We prove that an infinite profinite group is just infinite if and only if, for every open subgroup $H$ of $G$, there are only finitely many open normal subgroups of $G$ not contained in $H$. This extends a result recently established by Barnea, Gavioli, Jaikin-Zapirain, Monti and Scoppola, who proved the same characterisation in the case of pro-$p$ groups. We also use this result to establish a number of features of the general structure of profinite groups with regard to the just infinite property.

Abstract:This survey paper concerns mainly with some asymptotic topological properties of finitely presented discrete groups: quasi-simple filtration (QSF), geometric simple connectivity (GSC), topological inverse-representations, and the notion of easy groups. As we will explain, these properties are central in the theory of discrete groups seen from a topological viewpoint at infinity. Also, we shall outline the main steps of the achievements obtained in the last years around the very general question whether or not all finitely presented groups satisfy these conditions.

Abstract:We investigate whether a finitely generated profinite group G could have a finitely generated infinite image. A result of Dan Segal shows that this is impossible if G is prosoluble. We prove that such an image does not exist if G is semisimple or nonuniversal. We also investigate the existense of dense normal subgroups in $G$.

Abstract:Let $\mathfrak C$ be a class of finite groups which is closed for subgroups, quotients and direct products. Given a profinite group $G$ and an element $x\in G$, we denote by $P_{\mathfrak{C}}(x,G)$ the probability that $x$ and a randomly chosen element of $G$ generate a pro-${\mathfrak C}$ subgroup. We say that a profinite group $G$ is $\mathfrak C$-positive if $P_{\mathfrak{C}}(x,G)>0$ for all $x \in G.$ %Moreover we say that $G$ is $\mathfrak C$-bounded-positive if there exists a positive constant $\eta$ such that $P_{\mathfrak{C}}(x,G)>\eta$ for all $x \in G.$ We establish several equivalent conditions for a profinite group to be $\mathfrak C$-positive when $\mathfrak C$ is the class of finite soluble groups or of finite nilpotent groups. In particular, for the above classes, the profinite $\mathfrak C$-positive groups are virtually prosoluble (resp., virtually nilpotent). We also draw some consequences on the prosoluble (resp. pronilpotent) graph of a profinite group.

On the lattice of closed subgroups of a profinite group

Abstract:The subgroup lattice of a group is a great source of information about the structure of the group itself. The aim of this paper is to use a similar tool for studying profinite groups. In more detail, we study the lattices of closed or open subgroups of a profinite group and its relation with the whole group. We show, for example, that procyclic groups are the only profinite groups with a distributive lattice of closed or open subgroups, and we give a sharp characterization of profinite groups whose lattice of closed (or open) subgroups satisfies the Dedekind modular law; we actually give a precise description of the behaviour of modular elements of the lattice of closed subgroups. We also deal with the problem of carrying some structural information from a profinite group to another one having an isomorphic lattice of closed (or open) subgroups. Some interesting consequences and related results concerning decomposability and the number of profinite groups with a given lattice of closed (or open) subgroups are also obtained.

Abstract:This article explores the interplay between the finite quotients of finitely generated residually finite groups and the concept of amenability. We construct a finitely generated, residually finite, amenable group $A$ and an uncountable family of finitely generated, residually finite non-amenable groups all of which are profinitely isomorphic to $A$. All of these groups are branch groups. Moreover, picking up Grothendieck's problem, the group $A$ embeds in these groups such that the inclusion induces an isomorphism of profinite completions. In addition, we review the concept of uniform amenability, a strengthening of amenability introduced in the 70's, and we prove that uniform amenability indeed is detectable from the profinite completion.

Positive positive-definite functions and measures on locally compact abelian groups

Abstract:The author was recently able to provide a cohomological interpretation of Tate's Riemann-Roch formula for number fields using some new harmonic analysis objects, ghost-spaces. When trying to investigate these objects in general, we realized the importance of functions and measures on locally compact abelian groups that are both positive and positive-definite at the same time. It looks like this class of functions and measures was not systematically studied before. The goal of this paper is to partially fill in this gap. We answer some of the natural questions involving these functions and measures, especially those that satisfy some extra integrability conditions. We also study some operations and constructions involving these functions and measures. There are several very interesting open questions, that we are only able to point out at this moment. In particular, the structure of the cone of such functions is not clear even when the group is just $\R.$

Abstract:Let S be either a free group or the fundamental group of a closed hyperbolic surface. We show that if G is a finitely generated residually- p group with the same pro- p completion as S , then two-generated subgroups of G are free. This generalises (and gives a new proof of) the analogous result of Baumslag for parafree groups. Our argument relies on the following new ingredient: if G is a residually-(torsion-free nilpotent) group and is a virtually polycyclic subgroup, then H is nilpotent and the pro- p topology of G induces on H its full pro- p topology. Then we study applications to profinite rigidity. Remeslennikov conjectured that a finitely generated residually finite G with profinite completion is necessarily . We confirm this when G belongs to a class of groups that has a finite abelian hierarchy starting with finitely generated residually free groups. This strengthens a previous result of Wilton that relies on the hyperbolicity assumption. Lastly, we prove that the group is profinitely rigid within finitely generated residually free groups.

Abstract:Henry Wilton classified when a prime three-manifold $M$ has a residually free fundamental group $\pi_1 M$. We prove that the groups $\pi_1 M\times \mathbb Z^n$ are profinitely rigid within finitely generated residually free groups. We also establish other profinite invariants of the class of residually free groups such as coherence and subgroup separability. In the course of our proofs, we generalise a lemma of Wilton and Zalesskii on profinitely recognising when a central extension of groups splits.

Finite subgroups of the profinite completion of good groups

Abstract:Let $G$ be a residually finite, good group of finite virtual cohomological dimension. We prove that the natural monomorphism $G\hookrightarrow\hat{G}$ induces a bijective correspondence between conjugacy classes of finite $p$-subgroups of $G$ and those of its profinite completion $\hat{G}$. Moreover, we prove that the centralizers and normalizers in $\hat{G}$ of finite $p$-subgroups of $G$ are the closures of the respective centralizers and normalizers in $G$. With somewhat more restrictive hypotheses, we prove the same results for finite solvable subgroups of $G$. In the last section, we give a few applications of this theorem to hyperelliptic mapping class groups and virtually compact special toral relatively hyperbolic groups (these include fundamental groups of $3$-orbifolds and of uniform standard arithmetic hyperbolic orbifolds).

Abstract:We show that finite (i.e. locally finite and decomposition-finite) objects of a connected Grothendieck topos span a Boolean pretopos with an essentially unique Galois point. The automorphism group of this point carries a profinite topology whose classifying topos is equivalent to the given Grothendieck topos if the latter is finitely generated. This leads to an intrinsic definition of the fundamental group of any connected Grothendieck topos.

Lannes' $T$-functor and mod-$p$ cohomology of profinite groups

Abstract:The Lannes-Quillen theorem relates the mod-$p$ cohomology of a finite group $G$ with the mod-$p$ cohomology of centralizers of abelian elementary $p$-subgroups of $G$, for $p>0$ a prime number. This theorem was extended to profinite groups whose mod-$p$ cohomology algebra is finitely generated by Henn. In a weaker form, the Lannes-Quillen theorem was then extended by Symonds to arbitrary profinite groups. Building on Symonds' result, we formulate and prove a full version of this theorem for all profinite groups. For this purpose, we develop a theory of products for families of discrete torsion modules, parameterized by a profinite space, which is dual, in a very precise sense, to the theory of coproducts for families of profinite modules, parameterized by a profinite space, developed by Haran, Melnikov and Ribes. In the last section, we give applications to the problem of conjugacy separability of $p$-torsion elements and finite $p$-subgroups.

Abstract:We undertake the study of profinite quandles. We provide several constructions of profinite quandles from profinite groups, and from other profinite quandle. We characterize which subquandles of profinite quandles are again profinite. Finally, we provide a characterization of algebraically connected profinite quandles in terms of the profinite completion of their inner automorphism groups $\widehat{\Inn(Q)}$. It is anticipated that the results herein will find applications to the étale homotopy theory of number fields. v.2 has been updated to include an example due to Ariel Davis settling in the negative the question of whether all Stone topological quandles are profinite.
