Abstract:In this paper we study the existence of closed convex hypersurfaces in the Euclidean space Rn+1 such that a Weingarten curvature, regarded as a function of their unit normal, is equal to a given positive function on the unit sphere Sn. Two classical problems of this type, namely the Christoffel problem [6] and the Minkowski problem [16], which address respectively the cases of harmonic and Gauss curvature, were completely solved in the 1970’s [7,9,17]. Besides the harmonic and Gauss curvatures, the most interesting Weingarten curvatures are probably the mean curvature, or more generally the k-curvatures (1 ≤ k ≤ n)

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the geometry of the moduli space of curves by using the curvature properties of direct image sheaves of vector bundles. We show that the moduli space $(M_g, \omega_{WP})$ of curves with genus $g>1$ has dual-Nakano negative and semi-Nakano-negative curvature, and in particular, it has non-positive Riemannain curvature operator and also non-positive complex sectional curvature. As applications, we prove that any submanifold in $M_g$ which is totally geodesic in $A_g$ with finite volume must be a ball quotient. We also show that, on a Kodaira (deformation) surface, there is no K\"ahler metric with non-positive Riemannain sectional curvature although it possesses K\"ahler metrics with strictly negative holomorphic bisectional curvature.

Abstract:In this paper we consider the optimal transportation on Riemannian surfaces when the cost function is squared distance. The main ingredient is the verification of MTW condition. It is known that MTW condition holds if Gauss curvature is sufficiently close to $1$ in $C^{2}$ norm. In this paper we give an explicit condition on Gauss curvature such that MTW condition is satisfied.

Abstract:In this article we first show that any finite cover of the moduli space of closed Riemann surfaces of genus $g$ with $g\geq 2$ does not admit any Riemannian metric $ds^2$ of nonnegative scalar curvature such that $ds^2 \succ ds_{T}^2$ where $ds_{T}^2$ is the Teichm\"uller metric. Our second result is the proof that any cover $M$ of the moduli space $\mathbb{M}_{g}$ of a closed Riemann surface $S_{g}$ does not admit any complete Riemannian metric of uniformly positive scalar curvature in the quasi-isometry class of the Teichm\"uller metric, which implies a conjecture of Farb-Weinberger.

Abstract:Fix a number $g>1$, let $S$ be a close surface of genus $g$, and $Teich(S)$ be the Teichm\uller space of $S$ endowed with the Weil-Petersson metric. In this paper we show that the Riemannian sectional curvature operator of $Teich(S)$ is non-positive definite. As an application we show that any twist harmonic map from rank-one hyperbolic spaces $H_{Q,m}=Sp(m,1)/Sp(m)\cdot Sp(1)$ or $H_{O,2}=F_{4}^{-20}/SO(9)$ into $Teich(S)$ is a constant.

Abstract:The paper presents some recent results on the Weil-Petersson geometry theory of the universal Teichmüller space, a topic which is important in Teichmüller theory and has wide applications to various areas such as mathematical physics, differential equation and computer vision. \noindent (1) It is shown that a sense-preserving homeomorphism $h$ on the unit circle belongs to the Weil-Petersson class, namely, $h$ can be extended to a quasiconformal mapping to the unit disk whose Beltrami coefficient is squarely integrable in the Poincaré metric if and only if $h$ is absolutely continuous such that $\log h'$ belongs to the Sobolev class $H^{\frac 12}$. This solves an open problem posed by Takhtajan-Teo [TT2] in 2006 and investigated later by Figalli [Fi], Gay-Balmaz-Marsden-Ratiu ([GMR], [GR]) and others. \noindent The intrinsic characterization (1) of the Weil-Petersson class has the following applications which are also explored in this paper: \noindent (2) It is proved that there exists a quasisymmetric homeomorphism of the Weil-Petersson class which belongs neither to the Sobolev class $H^{\frac 32}$ nor to the Lipschitz class $\Lambda^1$, which was conjectured very recently by Gay-Balmaz-Ratiu [GR] when studying the classical Euler-Poincaré equation in the new setting that the involved sense-preserving homeomorphisms on the unit circle belong to the Weil-Petersson class. \noindent (3) It is proved that the flows of the $H^{\frac 32}$ vector fields on the unit circle are contained in the Weil-Petersson class, which was also conjectured by Gay-Balmaz-Ratiu [GR] during their above mentioned research. \noindent (4) A new metric is introduced on the Weil-Petersson Teichmüller space and is shown to be topologically equivalent to the Weil-Petersson metric.

Abstract:A basic feature of Teichmüller theory of Riemann surfaces is the interplay of two dimensional hyperbolic geometry, the behavior of geodesic-length functions and Weil-Petersson geometry. Let $\mathcal{T}_g$ $(g\geq 2)$ be the Teichmüller space of closed Riemann surfaces of genus $g$. Our goal in this paper is to study the gradients of geodesic-length functions along systolic curves. We show that their $L^p$ $(1\leq p \leq \infty)$-norms at every hyperbolic surface $X\in \mathcal{T}_g$ are uniformly comparable to $\ell_{sys}(X)^{\frac{1}{p}}$ where $\ell_{sys}(X)$ is the systole of $X$. As an application, we show that the minimal Weil-Petersson holomorphic sectional curvature at every hyperbolic surface $X\in \mathcal{T}_g$ is bounded above by a uniform negative constant independent of $g$, which negatively answers a question of M. Mirzakhani. Some other applications to the geometry of $\mathcal{T}_g$ will also be discussed.

Among other results, we show that the minimal Weil–Petersson holomorphic sectional curvature of a sufficiently thick hyperbolic surface is comparable to −1 , independently of the genus. This provides a counterexample to some suggestions that the Weil–Petersson metric becomes asymptotically flat, as the genus g goes to infinity, in the thick loci in Teichmüller space. Adopting a different perspective on curvature, we also show that the minimal (most negative) eigenvalue of the curvature operator at any point in the Teichmüller space Teich(Sg) of a closed surface Sg of genus g is uniformly bounded away from zero. Restricting to a thick part of Teich(Sg) , we show that the minimal eigenvalue is uniformly bounded below by an explicit constant which does not depend on the topology of the surface but only on the given bound on injectivity radius.

Abstract:We study the geometry of the Thurston metric on Teichmuller space by examining its geodesics and comparing them to Teichmuller geodesics. We show that, similar to a Teichmuller geodesic, the shadow of a Thurston geodesic to the curve graph is a reparametrized quasi-geodesic. However, we show that the set of short curves along the two geodesics are not identical.

Divergent geodesics in the Universal Teichmüller space

Abstract:Thurston boundary of the universal Teichmüller space $T(\mathbb{D})$ is the space $PML_{bdd}(\mathbb{D})$ of projective bounded measured laminations of $\mathbb{D}$. A geodesic ray in $T(\mathbb{D})$ is of generalized Teichmüller type if it shrinks the vertical foliation of a holomorphic quadratic differential. We provide the first examples of generalized Teichmüller rays which diverge near Thurston boundary $PLM_{bdd}(\mathbb{D})$. Moreover, for every $k\geq 1$ we construct examples of rays with limit sets homeomorphic to $k$-dimensional cubes. For the latter result we utilize the classical Kronecker approximation theorem from number theory which states that if $\theta_1,\ldots,\theta_k$ are rationally independent reals then the sequence $(\{\theta_1 n\},\ldots,\{\theta_k n\})$ is dense in the $k$-torus $\mathbb{T}^k$.

Geodesic Envelopes in the Thurston Metric on Teichmuller space

Abstract:The Thurston metric on Teichmuller space, first introduced by W. P. Thurston is an asymmetric metric on Teichmuller space defined by $d_{Th}(X,Y) = \frac12 log\sup_{\alpha} \frac{l_{\alpha}(Y)}{l_{\alpha}(X)}$. This metric is geodesic, but geodesics are far from unique. In this thesis, we show that in the once-punctured torus, and in the four-times punctured sphere, geodesics stay a uniformly-bounded distance from each other. In other words, we show that the \textbf{width} of the geodesic envelope, E(X,Y) between any pair of points $X,Y \in T(S)$ (where $S = S_{1,1}$ or $S = S_{0,4}$) is bounded uniformly. To do this, we first identify extremal geodesics in Env(X,Y), and show that these correspond to stretch vectors, proving a conjecture of Huang, Ohshika and Papadopoulos. We then compute Fenchel-Nielsen twisting along these paths, and use these computations, along with estimates on earthquake path lengths, to prove the main theorem.

Abstract:In this paper, we define and study the Weil-Petersson geometry. Under the framework of the Weil-Petersson geometry, we study the Weil-Petersson metric and the Hodge metric. Among the other results, we represent the Hodge metric in terms of the Weil-Petersson metric and the Ricci curvature of the Weil-Petersson metric for Calabi-Yau fourfold moduli. We also prove that the Hodge volume of the moduli space is finite. Finally, we proved that the curvature of the Hodge metric is bounded if the Hodge metric is complete and the dimension of the moduli space is 1.
