Abstract:The Japan-China international solar neutron observation program at Yangbajing (30.11N 90.53E, 4300m), Tibet has been started in October 1998. 28 NM-64 counters were installed and the single counts and multiplicities from one to eight counts are recorded for every second. Now we have more than 2 and a half-year data for October 1998 to April 2001.Recently we have observed a large Forbush decease related to the solar flare series occurred at April 2001. We also searched for a possible solar neutron signal using our data and the GOSE X-ray data but we could not find any significant signal during this period.

Abstract:Neutrinos generated during solar flares remain elusive. However, after $50$ years of discussion and search, the potential knowledge unleashed by their discovery keeps the search crucial. Neutrinos associated with solar flares provide information on otherwise poorly known particle acceleration mechanisms during solar flare. For neutrino detectors, the separation between atmospheric neutrinos and solar flare neutrinos is technically encumbered by an energy band overlap. To improve differentiation from background neutrinos, we developed a method to determine the temporal search window for neutrino production during solar flares. Our method is based on data recorded by solar satellites, such as Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES), Reuven Ramaty High Energy Solar Spectroscopic Imager (RHESSI), and GEOTAIL. In this study, we selected 23 solar flares above the X5.0 class that occurred between 1996 and 2018. We analyzed the light curves of soft X-rays, hard X-rays, $\gamma$-rays, line $\gamma$-rays from neutron capture as well as the derivative of soft X-rays. The average search windows are determined as follows: $4,178$ s for soft X-ray, $700$ s for derivative of soft X-ray, $944$ s for hard X-ray ($100$-$800$ keV), $1,586$ s for line $\gamma$-ray from neutron captures, and $776$ s for hard X-ray (above $50$ keV). This method allows neutrino detectors to improve their sensitivity to solar flare neutrinos.

Abstract: Neutrinos associated with solar flares (solar-flare neutrinos) provide information on particle acceleration mechanisms during the impulsive phase of solar flares. We searched using the Super-Kamiokande detector for neutrinos from solar flares that occurred during solar cycles $23$ and $24$, including the largest solar flare (X28.0) on November 4th, 2003. In order to minimize the background rate we searched for neutrino interactions within narrow time windows coincident with $\gamma$-rays and soft X-rays recorded by satellites. In addition, we performed the first attempt to search for solar-flare neutrinos from solar flares on the invisible side of the Sun by using the emission time of coronal mass ejections (CMEs). By selecting twenty powerful solar flares above X5.0 on the visible side and eight CMEs whose emission speed exceeds $2000$ $\mathrm{km \, s^{-1}}$ on the invisible side from 1996 to 2018, we found two (six) neutrino events coincident with solar flares occurring on the visible (invisible) side of the Sun, with a typical background rate of $0.10$ ($0.62$) events per flare in the MeV-GeV energy range. No significant solar-flare neutrino signal above the estimated background rate was observed. As a result we set the following upper limit on neutrino fluence at the Earth $\mathit{\Phi}<1.1\times10^{6}$ $\mathrm{cm^{-2}}$ at the $90\%$ confidence level for the largest solar flare. The resulting fluence limits allow us to constrain some of the theoretical models for solar-flare neutrino emission.

Abstract:Large solar flares occasionally trigger significant space-weather disturbances that affect the technological infrastructures of modern civilization, and therefore require further investigation. Although these solar flares have been monitored by satellite observations since the 1970s, large solar flares occur only infrequently and restrict systematic statistical research owing to data limitations. However, Toyokawa Observatory has operated solar radio observations at low frequencies (at 3.75 and 9.4 GHz) since 1951 and captured the early great flares as solar radio bursts. To estimate the magnitudes of flares that occurred before the start of solar X-ray (SXR) observations with the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) satellites, we show the relationship between microwave fluxes at 3.75 and 9.4 GHz and X-ray fluxes of flares that occurred after 1988. In total, we explored 341 solar flares observed with the Nobeyama Radio Polarimeters and Toyokawa Observatory from 1988-2014 and compared them with the SXR observations recorded by the GOES satellites. The correlation coefficient was approximately 0.7. Therefore, the GOES X-ray class can be estimated from the peak flux at 3.75 and 9.4 GHz with a large variance and an error of factor of 3 (1 sigma). Thus, for the first time, we quantitatively estimated the light curves of two early solar flares observed in 1956 February by the Toyokawa solar radio observations using the relationship between SXR thermal radiation and microwave nonthermal radiation (Neupert, 1968, ApJ, 153, 59).

Abstract:The newly built back-streaming white neutron beam line (Back-n) at China spallation Neutron Source (CSNS) makes a breakthrough for China's domestic nuclear data measurement, which is pushing nuclear data measurement in China towards higher precision and wider energy range. The neutron flux of the facility was measured at the first beginning since it is an extremely important characterization for the experiment proposal and data analysis. The neutron fluxes under big collimators in end station 1 (ES#1) and end station 2 (ES#2) had been characterized by a fission chamber. In this paper, the first measurement of the neutron flux of Back-n ES#1 with small collimators is reported. The neutron flux from 0.5 eV to 300 MeV was measured by three detectors: a silicon monitor based on a 6 LiF sample for the energy range below 200 keV, a fast multi-layer fission ionization chamber for the range from 10 keV to 300 MeV, and a proton recoil telescope for the high energy region from 10 to 70 MeV. The flux and its uncertainty with 50 bins per decade were finally evaluated by combining the data of the three detectors. The integrated flux in the full energy range at CSNS beam power of 100 kW is 1.642 × 10 6 n/cm 2 /s, which is consistent with the FLUKA simulation within a difference of about 4%.

Using the Maximum X-ray Flux Ratio and X-ray Background to Predict Solar Flare Class

Abstract:We present the discovery of a relationship between the maximum ratio of the flare flux (namely, 0.5-4 Ang to the 1-8 Ang flux) and non-flare background (namely, the 1-8 Ang background flux), which clearly separates flares into classes by peak flux level. We established this relationship based on an analysis of the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites (GOES) X-ray observations of ~ 50,000 X, M, C, and B flares derived from the NOAA/SWPC flares catalog. Employing a combination of machine learning techniques (K-nearest neighbors and nearest-centroid algorithms) we show a separation of the observed parameters for the different peak flaring energies. This analysis is validated by successfully predicting the flare classes for 100% of the X-class flares, 76% of the M-class flares, 80% of the C-class flares and 81% of the B-class flares for solar cycle 24, based on the training of the parametric extracts for solar flares in cycles 22-23.

Statistical Studies on the Excess Peak Flux in Soft X-Rays and Euv Bands from Solar Flares

Abstract:Based on the solar X-ray data in the band of 0.1 – 0.8 nm observed by Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites (GOES), the XUV and EUV data in the bands of 26 – 34 nm and 0.1 – 50 nm observed by the Solar EUV Monitor (SEM) onboard the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO), a statistical analysis on the excess peak flux (the pre-flare flux is subtracted) in two SEM bands during M- and X-class flares from 1998 to 2007 is given. The average ratio of the excess peak flux to the pre-flare flux for the M-class flares is 5.5 %±3.7 % and that for the X-class flares is 16 %±11 %. The excess peak fluxes in two SEM bands are positively correlated with the X-ray flare class; with the increase in the X-ray flare class, the excess peak flux in two SEM bands increases. However, a large dispersion in the excess peak flux in the SEM bands and their ratio is found for the same X-ray flare class. The relationship between the excess peak fluxes of the two SEM bands also shows large dispersion. It is considered that the diversity we found in the flare spectral irradiance is caused by many variable factors related to the structure and evolution of solar flares.

Abstract:The solar soft X-ray observations from the GOES satellites provide one of the best quantitative records of solar activity, with nearly continuous flare records since 1975. We present a uniform analysis of the entire time series for 1975 to 2022 at NOAA class C1 level or above, to characterize the occurrence distribution function (ODF) of the flares observed in the 1-8 A spectral band. The analysis includes estimations of the peak fluxes of the 12 flares that saturated the 1-8 A time series. Our new estimates include NOAA's recently established correction factor (1.43) to adjust the GOES-1 through GOES-15 data covering 1975-2016. For each of the 12 saturated events we have made new estimates of peak fluxes based on fits to the rise and fall of the flare time profile, and have validated our extrapolation schemes by comparing with artificially truncated but unsaturated X10-class events. SOL2003-11-04 now has a peak flux of 4.32e-3 W/m^2. This corresponds to X43 on the new scale, or X30 on the old scale. We provide a list in the Appendix for peak fluxes of all 38 events above 10^-3 W/m^2, the GOES X10 level, including the 12 saturated events. The full list now gives us a first complete sample from which we obtain an occurrence distribution function (ODF) for peak energy flux , often represented as a power law dF/dE ~ E^-alpha, for which we find alpha = 1.973 +- 0.014 in the range M1 to X3. The power-law description fails at the high end, requiring a downward break in the ODF above the X10 level. We give a tapered powerlaw description of the resulting CCDF (complementary cumulative distribution function) and extrapolate it into the domain of "superflares," i.e. flares with bolometric energies > 10^33 erg. Extrapolation of this fit provides estimates of 100-yr and 1000-yr GOES peak fluxes that agree reasonably well with other such estimates using different data sets and methodology.

Abstract:Solar flares convert magnetic energy into thermal and non-thermal plasma energy, the latter implying particle acceleration of charged particles such as protons. Protons are injected out of the coronal acceleration region and can interact with dense plasma in the lower solar atmosphere, producing mesons that subsequently decay into gamma rays and neutrinos at O(MeV-GeV) energies. We present the results of the first search for GeV neutrinos emitted during solar flares carried out with the IceCube Neutrino Observatory. While the experiment was originally designed to detect neutrinos with energies between 10 GeV and a few PeV, a new approach allowing for a O(GeV) energy threshold will be presented. The resulting limits allow us to constrain some of the theoretical estimates of the expected neutrino flux.

Abstract:The hadronic interaction of cosmic rays with solar atmosphere can produce high energy gamma-rays. The gamma-ray luminosity is correlated both with the flux of primary cosmic rays and the intensity of the solar magnetic field. The gamma-rays below 200 GeV have been observed by Fermi without any evident energy cutoff. The bright gamma-ray flux above 100 GeV has been detected only during solar minimum. The only available data in the TeV range come from the HAWC observations, however, outside the solar minimum. The ARGO-YBJ data set has been used to search for sub-TeV/TeV gamma-rays from the Sun during the solar minimum from 2008 to 2010, the same time period covered by the Fermi data. A suitable model containing the Sun shadow, solar disk emission, and inverse-Compton emission has been developed, and the chi-square minimization method was used to quantitatively estimate the disk gamma-ray signal. The result shows that no significant gamma-ray signal is detected and upper limits to the gamma-ray flux at 0.3-7 TeV are set at the 95% confidence level. In the low energy range these limits are consistent with the extrapolation of the Fermi-LAT measurements taken during solar minimum and are compatible with a softening of the gamma-ray spectrum below 1 TeV. They also provide an experimental upper bound to any solar disk emission at TeV energies. Models of dark matter annihilation via long-lived mediators predicting gamma-ray fluxes > 10(-7) GeV cm(-2) s(-1) below 1 TeV are ruled out by the ARGO-YBJ limits.

Abstract:An enhancement in the activity of the early young Sun resulting in a high charged particle flux has been invoked to explain excesses in spallation-induced nuclides in primitive planetary materials. Astronomical observations of energetic outbursts of young stellar objects (YSOs) also support the idea of an active young Sun. However, the early solar cosmic-ray (SCR) flux has not been well constrained. Here we use measured concentrations of SCR-produced nuclides that formed and are preserved in meteoritical hibonite and spinel, some of the solar system's oldest solids, and physical models for dust transport in the early protoplanetary disk to determine the magnitude of the early SCR flux. We focus our attention on cosmogenic neon, which cannot have been inherited from precursors and can only be produced in situ in solids. Our modeled effective exposure time to SCRs for these solids is very short, on the order of years. This indicates that the young Sun's SCR flux recorded in refractory mineral hibonite was up to ∼7 orders of magnitude higher than the contemporary level. Our flux estimate is consistent with the >10 5 × enhanced flux inferred from astronomical observations of greatly enhanced flare activities of YSOs.

Abstract:We investigate the near-Earth observation of interplanetary protons and electrons that result from the in-flight beta decay of low-energy (1–10 MeV) solar neutrons. We use in situ measurements throughout solar cycle 23 of 1–11 MeV protons and 50–400 keV electrons by the 3DP experiment on board the Wind spacecraft. We select a sample of isolated large (X-class) eastern hemisphere flares occurring during quiescent interplanetary conditions with the goal of discriminating neutron-decay particles from primary solar energetic particles. Unfortunately, all major flares of solar cycle 23 have to be excluded, with the largest flare in our sample being a X3.6 flare. For these relatively small event sizes, no in situ events due to the decay of solar flare neutrons are observed by Wind. From the one event with simultaneous γ-ray observations, we estimate the expected signal of neutron-decay protons in the Wind/3DP detectors. We use theoretical calculations of the spectrum of escaping neutrons at the Sun combined with an interplanetary propagation model to predict the neutron-decay proton spectrum expected near the Earth. We find that the expected spectrum is indeed well below the background intensities. However, using the estimates derived from the largest solar event of cycle 23 (2003 October 28) and assuming the flare would have occurred isolated in the eastern hemisphere, a clear signal above 5 MeV is expected to be seen.
Observation of solar high energy gamma and X-ray emission and solar energetic particles

Abstract:We considered 18 solar flares observed between June 2010 and July 2012, in which high energy >100 MeV γ-emission was registered by the Large Area Telescope (LAT) aboard FermiGRO. We examined for these γ-events soft X-ray observations by GOES, hard X-ray observations by the Anti-Coincidence Shield of the SPectrometer aboard INTEGRAL (ACS SPI) and the Gamma-Ray burst Monitor (GBM) aboard FermiGRO. Hard X-ray and π0-decay γ-ray emissions are used as tracers of electron and proton acceleration, respectively. Bursts of hard X-ray were observed by ACS SPI during impulsive phase of 13 events. Bursts of hard X- ray >100 keV were not found during time intervals, when prolonged hard y-emission was registered by LAT/FermiGRO. Those events showing prolonged high-energy gamma-ray emission not accompanied by >100 keV hard X-ray emission are interpreted as an indication of either different acceleration processes for protons and electrons or as the presence of a proton population accelerated during the impulsive phase of the flare and subsequently trapped by some magnetic structure. In-situ energetic particle measurements by GOES and STEREO (High Energy Telescope, HET) shows that five of these y-events were not accompanied by SEP events at 1 AU, even when multi-point measurements including STEREO are taken into account. Therefore accelerated protons are not always released into the heliosphere. A longer delay between the maximum temperature and the maximum emission measure characterises flares with prolonged high energy γ-emission and solar proton events.

Abstract:Insight-HXMT was taking data normally around the trigger time (T0=2020-04-10T23:19:55.49 UTC) of this high-energy neutrino event (GCN #27534), which was monitored without any occultation by the Earth. Within T0 +/- 100 s, no significant excess events (SNR > 3 sigma) are found in a search of the Insight-HXMT/HE raw light curves. Assuming the counterpart GRB with three typical GRB Band spectral models, two typical duration timescales(1 s, 10 s) coming from the position of this neutrino event, the 5-sigma upper-limits fluence (0.2 - 5 MeV, incident energy) are reported below: Band model 1 (alpha=-1.9, beta=-3.7, Ep=70 keV): 1s: 1.3e-07 erg cm^-2 10s: 6.1e-07 erg cm^-2 Band model 2 (alpha=-1.0, beta=-2.3, Ep=230 keV): 1s: 2.1e-07 erg cm^-2 10s: 9.6e-07 erg cm^-2 Band model 3 (alpha=-0.0, beta=-1.5, Ep=1000 keV): 1s: 5.4e-07 erg cm^-2 10s: 2.1e-06 erg cm^-2 Further analysis will be reported in the following circulars. All measurements above are made with the CsI detectors operating in the regular mode with the energy range of about 80-800 keV (record energy). Only gamma-rays with energy greater than about 200 keV can penetrate the spacecraft and leave signals in the CsI detectors installed inside of the telescope. Insight-HXMT is the first Chinese space X-ray telescope, which was funded jointly by the China National Space Administration (CNSA) and the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). The dominant uncertainty on the neutron detection efficiency is reduced by 56% with respect to the previous measurement through a comprehensive neutron calibration and detailed data and simulation analysis. The new average IBD yield is determined to be $(5.91pm0.09)times10^{-43}~rm{cm}^2/rm{fission}$ with total uncertainty improved by 29%. The corresponding mean fission fractions from the four main fission isotopes $^{235}$U, $^{238}$U, $^{239}$Pu, and $^{241}$Pu are 0.564, 0.076, 0.304, and 0.056, respectively. The ratio of measured to predicted antineutrino yield is found to be $0.952pm0.014pm0.023$ ($1.001pm0.015pm0.027$) for the Huber-Mueller (ILL-Vogel) model, where the first and second uncertainty are experimental and theoretical model uncertainty, respectively. This measurement confirms the discrepancy between the world average of reactor antineutrino flux and the Huber-Mueller model.

Abstract:Abstract The energy and spectral shape of radio bursts may help us understand the generation mechanism of solar eruptions, including solar flares, coronal mass ejections, eruptive filaments, and various scales of jets. The different kinds of flares may have different characteristics of energy and spectral distribution. In this work, we selected 10 mostly confined flare events during October 2014 to investigate their overall spectral behaviour and the energy emitted in microwaves by using radio observations from microwaves to interplanetary radio waves, and X-ray observations of GOES , RHESSI, and Fermi/GBM. We found that: all the confined flare events were associated with a microwave continuum burst extending to frequencies of 9.4 ∼ 15.4 GHz, and the peak frequencies of all confined flare events are higher than 4.995 GHz and lower than or equal to 17 GHz. The median value is around 9 GHz. The microwave burst energy (or fluence) and the peak frequency are found to provide useful criteria to estimate the power of solar flares. The observations imply that the magnetic field in confined flares tends to be stronger than that in 412 flares studied by Nita et al. (2004). All 10 events studied did not produce detectable hard X-rays with energies above ∼300 keV indicating the lack of efficient acceleration of electrons to high energies in the confined flares.

Abstract:The proton-proton ($pp$) fusion chain dominates the neutrino production from the Sun. The uncertainty of the predicted $pp$ neutrino flux is at the sub-percent level, whereas that of the best measurement is $\mathcal{O}(10\%)$. In this paper, we present the first result to measure the solar $pp$ neutrinos in the electron recoil energy range from 24 to 144 keV, using the PandaX-4T commissioning data with 0.63 tonne$\times$year exposure. The $pp$ neutrino flux is determined to be $(8.0 \pm 3.9 \,{\rm{(stat)}} \pm 10.0 \,{\rm{(syst)}} )\times 10^{10}\, $$\rm{s}^{-1} \rm{cm}^{-2}$, consistent with Standard Solar Model and existing measurements, corresponding to a flux upper limit of $23.3\times 10^{10}\, $$\rm{s}^{-1} \rm{cm}^{-2}$ at 90\% C.L..

Abstract:Quite often powerful flares occur during a decrease of solar activity. In this work, we make an attempt to consider X-class flares at the minima of solar activity cycles as a separate group of events. Out of nine X-class flares we selected three such events that occurred at the minima of solar cycles 22–24: SOL1996-07-09T-09:09 (X2.6), SOL2006-12-13T-10:26 (X3.4), and SOL2017-09-06T-11:53 (X9.3); they were well observed by various instruments. All three selected flares are characterized by significant gamma-ray emission, which indicates ion acceleration during the impulsive phase. For the selected events, we estimated the energetics and distribution of the released free energy of the magnetic field between different flare components, including thermal energy and the energy of accelerated electrons and ions. No preferred energy-release channels have been identified for the considered flares at the solar activity minima. It turned out that the amount of magnetic free energy is several times higher than the amount of thermal energy and the energy of accelerated electrons and ions; the possible causes of this imbalance are discussed.
