Stochastic Processes and their Applications

Abstract:We establish moduli of continuity and large increment properties for stationary increment Gaussian processes in order to study the path behavior of infinite series of independent Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes. The existence and continuity of the latter infinite series type Gaussian processes are proved via showing that under a global condition their partial sum processes converge uniformly over finite intervals with probability one.

Abstract:In this paper, we show the invariance principle for the partial sum processes of fractionally integrated processes, otherwise known as I(d + m) processes, where |d| < 1/2 and m is a nonnegative integer, with strong near-epoch dependent innovations. The results are applied to the test of unit root. The conditions given improve previous results in the literature concerning fractionally integrated processes.

Abstract:Semi-Levy process is an additive process with periodically stationary increments. In particular, it is a generalization of Levy process. The dichotomy of recurrence and transience of Levy processes is well known, but this is not necessarily true for general additive processes. In this paper, we prove the recurrence and transience dichotomy of semi-Levy processes. For the proof, we introduce a concept of semi-random walk and discuss its recurrence and transience properties. An example of semi-Levy process constructed from two independent Levy processes is investigated. Finally, we prove the laws of large numbers for semi-Levy processes.

Abstract:The important application of semi-static hedging in financial markets naturally leads to the notion of quasi self-dual processes. The focus of our study is to give new characterizations of quasi self-duality for exponential Lévy processes such that the resulting market does not admit arbitrage opportunities. We derive a set of equivalent conditions for the stochastic logarithm of quasi self-dual martingale models and derive a further characterization of these models not depending on the Lévy-Khintchine parametrization. Since for non-vanishing order parameter two martingale properties have to be satisfied simultaneously, there is a non-trivial relation between the order and shift parameter representing carrying costs in financial applications. This leads to an equation containing an integral term which has to be inverted in applications. We first discuss several important properties of this equation and, for some well-known models, we derive a family of closed-form inversion formulae leading to parameterizations of sets of possible combinations in the corresponding parameter spaces of well-known Lévy driven models.

Abstract:A spectral criterion involving the model parameters is given for the existence and uniqueness of a periodically correlated and seasonal non‐negative integer‐valued autoregressive process. The structure of the mean and covariance functions of the periodically stationary distribution of the model is derived using its implicit state‐space representation. Two infinite series representations for the process, the moving average, and the immigrant generation, are established. Based on the latter representation, a novel and parallelizable simulation method is proposed to generate the process.

Abstract:In the article we consider the Levy processes and the corresponding semigroups. We represent the generators of these semigroups in convolution forms. Using the obtained convolution form and the theory of integral equations we investigate the properties of a wide class of Levy processes (potential, quasi-potential, the probability of the Levy process remaining within the given domain, long time behavior). We analyze in detail a number of concrete examples of the Levy processes (the stable processes, the variance damped Levy processes, the variance gamma processes, the normal Gaussian process, the Meixner process, the compound Poisson process.)

Abstract:We propose a novel class of first-order integer-valued AutoRegressive (INAR(1)) models based on a new operator, the so-called geometric thinning operator, which induces a certain non-linearity to the models. We show that this non-linearity can produce better results in terms of prediction when compared to the linear case commonly considered in the literature. The new models are named non-linear INAR(1) (in short NonLINAR(1)) processes. We explore both stationary and non-stationary versions of the NonLINAR processes. Inference on the model parameters is addressed and the finite-sample behavior of the estimators investigated through Monte Carlo simulations. Two real data sets are analyzed to illustrate the stationary and non-stationary cases and the gain of the non-linearity induced for our method over the existing linear methods. A generalization of the geometric thinning operator and an associated NonLINAR process are also proposed and motivated for dealing with zero-inflated or zero-deflated count time series data.

Abstract:To introduce more flexibility in process‐parameters through a regime‐switching behavior, the classical autoregressive (AR) processes have been extended to self‐exciting threshold autoregressive (SETAR) processes. However, the stationary marginal distributions of SETAR processes are usually difficult to obtain in explicit forms and, therefore, they lack appropriate characterizations. The stationary marginal distribution of a multivariate (‐dimensional) SETAR process of order one with multivariate normal innovations is shown to belong to the unified skew‐normal () family and characterized under a fairly broad condition. This article also characterizes the stationary marginal distributions of a subclass of the processes with symmetric multivariate stable innovations. To characterize the stationary marginal distributions of these processes, the authors show that they belong to specific skew‐distribution families, and for a given skew‐distribution from the corresponding family, an process, with stationary marginal distribution identical to the given skew‐distribution, can be associated. Furthermore, this article illustrates a diagnostic of an model using the corresponding stationary marginal density.

Abstract:Dilative semistability extends the notion of semi-selfsimilarity for infinitely divisible stochastic processes by introducing an additional scaling in the convolution exponent. It is shown that this scaling relation is a natural extension of dilative stability and some examples of dilatively semistable processes are given. We further characterize dilatively stable and dilatively semistable processes as limits for certain rescaled aggregations of independent processes.

Abstract:Derivatives and integration operators are well-studied examples of linear operators that commute with scaling up to a fixed multiplicative factor; i.e., they are scale-invariant. Fractional order derivatives (integration operators) also belong to this family. In this paper, we extend the fractional operators to complex-order operators by constructing them in the Fourier domain. We analyze these operators in details with a special emphasis on the decay properties of the outputs. We further use these operators to introduce a family of complex-valued stable processes that are self-similar with complex-valued Hurst indices. These processes are expressed via the characteristic functionals over the Schwartz space of functions. Besides the self-similarity and stationarity, we study the regularity (in terms of Sobolev spaces) of the proposed processes.

Abstract:Constructing \Levy-driven Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes is a task closely related to the notion of self-decomposability. In particular, their transition laws are linked to the properties of what will be hereafter called the \emph{a-reminder} of their self-decomposable stationary laws. In the present study we fully characterize the Lévy triplet of these a-reminder s and we provide a general framework to deduce the transition laws of the finite variation Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes associated with tempered stable distributions. We focus finally on the subclass of the exponentially-modulated tempered stable laws and we derive the algorithms for an exact generation of the skeleton of Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes related to such distributions, with the further advantage of adopting a procedure computationally more efficient than those already available in the existing literature.

Abstract:In this paper we present a general mathematical construction that allows us to define a parametric class of $H$-sssi stochastic processes (self-similar with stationary increments), which have marginal probability density function that evolves in time according to a partial integro-differential equation of fractional type. This construction is based on the theory of finite measures on functional spaces. Since the variance evolves in time as a power function, these $H$-sssi processes naturally provide models for slow and fast anomalous diffusion. Such a class includes, as particular cases, fractional Brownian motion, grey Brownian motion and Brownian motion.

Abstract:We propose a change in focus from the prevalent paradigm based on the branching property as a tool to analyze the structure of population models, to one based on the self-similarity property, which we also introduce for the first time in the setting of measure-valued processes. By extending the well-known Lamperti transformation for self-similar Markov processes to the Banach-valued case we are able to generalize celebrated results in population genetics that describe the frequency-process of measure-valued stable branching processes in terms of the subfamily of Beta-Fleming-Viot processes. In our work we describe the frequency process of populations whose total size evolves as any positive self-similar Markov process in terms of general $\Lambda$-Fleming-Viot processes. Our results demonstrate the potential power of the self-similar perspective for the study of population models in which the reproduction dynamics of the individuals depend on the total population size, allowing for more complex and realistic models.

Abstract:Stochastic principles for constructing the process of anomalous diffusion are considered, and corresponding models of random processes are reviewed. The self-similarity and the independent-increments principles are used to extend the notion of diffusion process to the class of Levy-stable processes. Replacing the independent-increments principle with the renewal principle allows us to take the next step in generalizing the notion of diffusion, which results in fractional-order partial space–time differential equations of diffusion. Fundamental solutions to these equations are represented in terms of stable laws, and their relationship to the fractality and memory of the medium is discussed. A new class of distributions, called fractional stable distributions, is introduced.

Weak Convergence for Self-Normalized Partial Sum Processes in the Skorokhod M1 Topology with Applications to Regularly Varying Time Series

Abstract:In this paper we study the weak convergence of self-normalized partial sum processes in the Skorokhod M1 topology for sequences of random variables which exhibit clustering of large values of the same sign. We show that for stationary regularly varying sequences with such properties, their corresponding properly centered self-normalized partial sums processes converge to a stable Levy process. The convergence is established in the space of cadlag functions endowed with Skorohod's M1 topology, which is more suitable especially for cases in which the standard J1 topology fails to induce weak convergence of joint stochastic functionals.

Abstract:We define a new type of self-similarity for one-parameter families of stochastic processes, which applies to a number of important families of processes that are not self-similar in the conventional sense. This includes a new class of fractional Hougaard motions defined as moving averages of Hougaard Lévy process, as well as some well-known families of Hougaard Lévy processes such as the Poisson processes, Brownian motions with drift, and the inverse Gaussian processes. Such families have many properties in common with ordinary self-similar processes, including the form of their covariance functions, and the fact that they appear as limits in a Lamperti-type limit theorem for families of stochastic processes.
