Abstract:We begin this thesis with an extensive pedagogical introduction aimed at clarifying the foundations of the hierarchy problem. After introducing effective field theory, we discuss renormalization at length from a variety of perspectives. We focus on conceptual understanding and connections between approaches, while providing a plethora of examples for clarity. With that background we can then clearly understand the hierarchy problem, which is reviewed primarily by introducing and refuting common misconceptions thereof. We next discuss some of the beautiful classic frameworks to approach the issue. However, we argue that the LHC data have qualitatively modified the issue into `The Loerarchy Problem'---how to generate an IR scale without accompanying visible structure---and we discuss recent work on this approach. In the second half, we present some of our own work in these directions, beginning with explorations of how the Neutral Naturalness approach motivates novel signatures of electroweak naturalness at a variety of physics frontiers. Finally, we propose a New Trail for Naturalness and suggest that the physical breakdown of EFT, which gravity demands, may be responsible for the violation of our EFT expectations at the LHC.

Abstract:Lowering the string scale in the TeV region provides a theoretical framework for solving the mass hierarchy problem and unifying all interactions. The apparent weakness of gravity can then be accounted by the existence of large internal dimensions, in the submillimeter region, and transverse to a braneworld where our universe must be confined. I review the main properties of this scenario and its implications for observations at both particle colliders, and in non-accelerator gravity experiments. Such effects are for instance the production of Kaluza-Klein resonances, graviton emission in the bulk of extra dimensions, and a radical change of gravitational forces in the submillimeter range. I also discuss the warped case and localization of gravity in the presence of infinite size extra dimensions.

Abstract:We review ideas relating the breaking of Supersymmetry in de Sitter (dS) space-time to amplitudes in which gravitinos are reflected from the dS horizon. A self consistent evaluation of such amplitudes leads to the estimate $m_{3/2} = K \Lambda^{1/4}$, with a constant $K$ that is not easily calculable. LHC bounds on superpartner masses, plus the structure of low energy effective field theory then imply that there must be new superfields with standard model quantum numbers in the region below $100$ TeV. Only one class of models, the Pyramid Schemes, has been found, which is compatible with one loop coupling unification. They have a new strongly coupled gauge sector with a confinement scale in the multi TeV region. We outline the general predictions of these models, which include Dirac gauginos and a novel solution of the strong CP problem. The models all appear to have a "little hierarchy problem": the expectation value of the standard model Higgs field, and its mass, must be a factor of $10$ or more smaller than the masses of the second Higgs doublet or standard model superpartners. Since all of these models contain uncertainties from the strong coupling physics, as well as the physics of the dS horizon, it is difficult to determine how serious this fine tuning problem is.

Abstract:We introduce a new scenario to solve the hierarchy problem based on $\mathcal{N}=2$, five-dimensional supergravity compactified on Calabi-Yau threefold down from $\mathcal{D}=11$ supergravity. When modeling the universe as a 3-brane embedded in a five-dimensional bulk, the background metric is proportional to one of the hypermultiplets fields, namely the dilaton, the volume modulus of the Calabi-Yau space. When solving the dilaton field equation, we find that it is dependent on the extra dimension. We solve the modified Friedmann equations and find the implications of the model on the relation between the effective four-dimensional gravity scale in the brane and the Planck scale of the fifth extra dimension ($\mathcal{M} $). A couple of different scales are considered for the extra dimension, the first where the extra dimension is in range of the solar system and $\mathcal{M} $ is of order of the electroweak scale, and the second where the scale of the extra dimension is of order $\mu m$ and the higher dimensional Planck scale $\mathcal{M} \sim 10^{13} ~ \text{GeV}$. In both cases, the signatures of Kaluza-Klein excitations are quite distinct from the signatures of any previous extra dimensions model.

Constraints on Models with Warped Extra Dimensions

Abstract:It has been known for some time that warped extra dimensions offer a potential explanation of the large hierarchy that exists between the electroweak scale and the Planck scale. The majority of this work has focused on a five dimensional slice of AdS space. This thesis attempts to address the question, what possible spaces offer phenomenologically viable resolutions to this gauge hierarchy problem. In order for a space to offer a potential resolution to the hierarchy problem two conditions must be met: Firstly one should be able to demonstrate that the space can be stabilised such that a small effective electroweak scale (or large effective Planck scale) can be obtained. Secondly one must demonstrate that the space allows for a Kaluza Klein (KK) scale that is small enough such that one does not reintroduce a hierarchy in the effective theory. Here we focus on the second condition and examine the constraints, on the KK scale, coming from corrections to electroweak observables and flavour physics which arise when gauge fields propagate in an additional dimension. We study a large class of possible spaces of different geometries and dimensionalities. In five dimensions it is found that such constraints are generically large. In more than five dimensions it is found that a significant proportion of such spaces suffer from either a high density of KK modes or alternatively strongly coupled KK fields. The latter would not offer viable resolutions to the hierarchy problem. Models in which the Higgs propagates in the bulk are also studied, in the context of models with a `soft wall' and it is found these have significantly reduced constraints from flavour physics as well as a notion of a minimum fermion mass.

Abstract:This is a written version of lectures delivered at TASI 2022 ``Ten Years After the Higgs Discovery: Particle Physics Now and Future''. Mechanisms and symmetries beyond the Standard Model (BSM) are presented capable of elegantly and robustly generating the striking hierarchies we observe in particle physics. They are shown to be among the central archetypes of quantum effective field theory and to strongly resonate with the tight structure and phenomenology of the Standard Model itself, allowing one to motivate, develop and test a worthy successor. The (Little) Hiearchy Problem is discussed within this context. The lectures culminate in specific BSM case-studies, gaugino-mediated (dynamical) supersymmetry breaking to generate the weak/Planck hierarchy, and (in less detail) extra-dimensional wavefunction overlaps to generate flavor hierarchies.

Abstract:We discuss the role of the top-quark Yukawa coupling $y_t$ concerning the hierarchy problem and construct an alternative scheme to the conventional solutions with top partners. In traditional models, like SUSY or composite Higgs, top partners cancel the top loop contribution to the Higgs quadratic term. The lack of evidence for such colored partners however drives these models into more and more fine-tuned regions. Here, an alternative means to mitigate the top loop, allowing for natural electroweak symmetry breaking, is presented. Emphasizing that we have not measured the top-Higgs interactions at high scales yet, we envisage scenarios where this interaction is only approaching its sizable strength in the infra-red, but gets strongly suppressed at high scales. We first discuss possible effects via a modification of the running of the top Yukawa coupling. Then, we turn to models where the top Yukawa is generated at one-loop level. Originated from a dimension-six operator, it drops when crossing the mass threshold of new degrees of freedom. In either case, the top partners are replaced by some new top-philic particles with strong interaction. Thus, a very different phenomenology, such as large top mass running and signals in four top final states, is introduced, which will be discussed in detail. With the assistance of this mechanism, the solution to the hierarchy problem can be pushed to a (well-defined) higher scale, and a final test of naturalness might be deferred to a 100 TeV Collider, like the FCC.

Abstract:The Hierarchy Problem is arguably the most important guiding principle concerning the extension to high-energy scales of the Standard Model (SM) of Fundamental Interactions. Every scenario for addressing this issue unavoidably predicts new physics in the TeV energy range, which is currently being probed directly by the LHC experimental program. Among the possible solutions to the Hierarchy Problem, the scenario of a composite Higgs boson is a very simple idea and a rather plausible picture has emerged over the years by combining the following ingredients: First, the Higgs must be a (pseudo-) Nambu-Goldstone boson, rather than a generic hadron of the new strong sector. Second, through the so-called 'partial compositeness', SM particles mix with strong sector resonances with suitable quantum numbers, so that they become a linear combination of elementary and composite degrees of freedom. Recently, general descriptions of the Composite Higgs Scenario were developed which successfully capture the relevant features of this theoretical framework in a largely model-independent way. The present book provides a concise and illustrative introduction to the subject for a broad audience of graduate students and non-specialist researchers in the fields of particle, nuclear and gravitational physics.
Reexamination of the hierarchy problem from a novel geometric perspective

Abstract:A lucid interpretation of the longstanding hierarchy problem is proposed based on the unconventional model of the universe recently proposed by the authors. Our heuristic cosmological model is developed by considering Penrose and Petit's original ideas as the Weyl curvature hypothesis, conformal cyclic cosmology, and the twin universe model. The uniqueness of our model lies in its incorporation of dark energy and matter, and its single key parameter, adjusted by observational data, is the radius ($R_{dS}$) of a four-dimensional ($4D$) hypersphere called de Sitter space. We presuppose that our $4D$ universe originated from the spontaneous conformal symmetry (SCS) breaking of a light field with a null distance. We show that in this SCS breaking state, the energy--momentum tensor of the space-like electromagnetic field, whose existence is inevitable for quantum electromagnetic field interactions (Greenberg--Robinson theorem), becomes isomorphic to the divergence-free Einstein tensor in the general theory of relativity. Furthermore, we reveal the $R_{dS}$ dependency of the $4D$ gravitational field. Based on these findings, we show an intriguing relation between the magnitude of the gravitational coupling constant and $R_{dS}$. A solution to the hierarchy problem is derived by assuming that $R_{dS}$ depends on the "newly defined cosmological time".

Abstract:In this talk, an alternative to top partner solutions and its consequences on phenomenology are discussed. The hierarchy problem from the top loop contribution is solved by mitigating the top Yukawa coupling at high scales. In this scenario, the new degrees of freedom appearing at the cut-off scale of the top loop should then be some new top-philic particles instead of traditional top partners. The idea can be directly tested through measurements in top physics, including $t\bar{t}h$, $t\bar{t}$ differential cross section, and $t\bar{t}t\bar{t}$ cross section.

Abstract:The Standard Model calculation of $H\rightarrow\gamma\gamma$ has the curious feature of being finite but regulator-dependent. While dimensional regularization yields a result which respects the electromagnetic Ward identities, additional terms which violate gauge invariance arise if the calculation is done setting $d=4$. This discrepancy between the $d=4-\epsilon$ and $d=4$ results is recognized as a true ambiguity which must be resolved using physics input; as dimensional regularization respects gauge invariance, the $d=4-\epsilon$ calculation is accepted as the correct SM result. However, here we point out another possibility; working in analogy with the gauge chiral anomaly, we note that it is possible that the individual diagrams do violate the electromagnetic Ward identities, but that the gauge-invariance-violating terms cancel when all contributions to $H\rightarrow\gamma\gamma$, both from the SM and from new physics, are included. We thus examine the consequences of the hypothesis that the $d=4$ calculation is valid, but that such a cancellation occurs. We work in general renormalizable gauge, thus avoiding issues with momentum routing ambiguities. We point out that the gauge-invariance-violating terms in $d=4$ arise not just for the diagram containing a SM $W^{\pm}$ boson, but also for general fermion and scalar loops, and relate these terms to a lack of shift invariance in Higgs tadpole diagrams. We then derive the analogue of "anomaly cancellation conditions", and find consequences for solutions to the hierarchy problem. In particular, we find that supersymmetry obeys these conditions, even if it is softly broken at an arbitrarily high scale.

Towers and Hierarchies in the Standard Model from Emergence in Quantum Gravity

Abstract:Based on Quantum Gravity arguments, it has been suggested that all kinetic terms of light particles below the UV cut-off could arise in the IR via quantum (loop) corrections. These loop corrections involve infinite towers of states becoming light (e.g. Kaluza-Klein or string towers). We study implications of this Emergence Proposal for fundamental scales in the Standard Model (SM). In this scheme all Yukawa couplings are of order one in the UV and small Yukawas for lighter generations appear via large anomalous dimensions induced by the towers of states. Thus, the observed hierarchies of quark and lepton masses are a reflection of the structure of towers of states that lie below the Quantum Gravity scale, $\Lambda_{\text{QG}}$. Small Dirac neutrino masses consistent with experimental observation appear due to the existence of a tower of SM singlet states of mass $m_{0}\simeq Y_{\nu_3}M_p\simeq 7\times 10^5$ GeV, opening up a new extra dimension, while the UV cut-off occurs at $\Lambda_{\text{QG}}\lesssim 10^{14}$ GeV. Additional constraints relating the Electro-Weak (EW) and cosmological constant (c.c.) scales (denoted $M_{\text{EW}}$ and $V_0$) appear if the Swampland condition $m_{\nu_1}\lesssim V_0^{1/4}$ is imposed (with $\nu_1$ denoting the lightest neutrino), which itself arises upon applying the AdS non-SUSY Conjecture or the AdS/dS Distance Conjecture to the 3d vacua from circle compactifications of the SM. In particular, the EW scale and that of the extra dimension fulfill ${m_0 \, M_{\text{EW}}\lesssim 10^{2}\, V_0^{1/4}M_p}$, thus relating the EW hierarchy problem to that of the c.c. Hence, all fundamental scales may be written as powers of the c.c., i.e. $m_{\bullet}\sim V_0^\delta M_p^{1-4\delta}$. The scale of SUSY breaking is $m_{3/2}\lesssim 7\times 10^5$ GeV, which favours a Mini-Split scenario that could be possibly tested at LHC and/or FCC.

Abstract:Little Higgs models address the hierarchy problem by identifying the SM Higgs doublet as pseudo-Nambu--Goldstone bosons (pNGB) arising from global symmetries with collective breakings. These models are designed to address the little hierarchy problem up to a scale of $\Lambda\!\sim\! {\cal O}(10)$ TeV. Consequently, these models necessitate an ultraviolet (UV) completion above this scale. On the other hand, conformal extensions of the Standard Model are intriguing because scales emerge as a consequence of dimensional transmutation. In this study, we present a unified framework in which the electroweak hierarchy problem is tackled through a conformal symmetry collectively broken around the TeV scale, offering an appealing UV completion for little Higgs models. Notably, this framework automatically ensures the presence of the required UV fixed points, eliminating the need for careful adjustments to the particle content of the theory. Moreover, this framework naturally addresses the flavor puzzles associated with composite or little Higgs models. Furthermore, we suggest that in this framework all known little Higgs models can be UV-completed through conformal dynamics above the scale $\Lambda$ up to arbitrary high scales.

Abstract:If scale invariance is a classical symmetry then both the Planck scale and the weak scale should emerge as quantum effects. We show that this can be realized in simple scale invariant theories with a hidden sector. The weak/Planck scale hierarchy emerges in the (technically natural) limit where the hidden sector decouples from the ordinary sector. The weak scale is protected from quadratic divergences because of classical scale invariance, so there is no hierarchy problem.

Abstract:One of the most important issue in soft tissue modeling is to assess the quality of the simulations. A validation protocol is presented based on two CT scans of the patient acquired before and after cranio-maxillofacial surgery. The actual bones repositioning realized during the intervention are accurately measured and reproduced. A evaluation of the soft tissue deformation is then computed using a finite element model of the face. The simulations are therefore compared, qualitatively and quantitatively, with the actual outcome of the surgery. This protocol enable to rigorously evaluate different modeling methods, and to assess the clinical relevance of soft tissue simulation in maxillofacial surgery.

Abstract:I am considering Veltman's "The Infrared - Ultraviolet Connection" addressing the issue of quadratic divergences and the related huge radiative correction predicted by the electroweak Standard Model (SM) in the relationship between the bare and the renormalized theory, commonly called "the hierarchy problem" which usually is claimed that this has to be cured. After the discovery of the Higgs particle at CERN, which essentially completed the SM, an amazing interrelation of the leading interaction strengths of the gauge bosons, the top-quark and the Higgs boson showed up amounting that the SM allows for a perturbative extrapolation of the running couplings up to the Planck scale. The central question concerns the stability of the electroweak vacuum, which requires that the running Higgs self-coupling stays positive. Although several evaluations seem to favor the meta-stability within the experimental and theoretical parameter-uncertainties, one should not exclude the possibility that other experiments and improved matching conditions will be able to establish the absolute stability of the SM vacuum in the future. I will discuss the stable vacuum scenario and its impact on early cosmology, revealing the Higgs boson as the inflaton. It turns out that the Standard Model's presumed "hierarchy problem" and similarly the "cosmological constant problem" resolve themselves when we understand the SM as a low energy effective tail that is emergent from a cutoff-medium at the Planck scale. "The Infrared - Ultraviolet Connection" conveyed by the Higgs boson mass renormalization appears in a new light when the energy dependence of the SM couplings is taken into account. The bare Higgs boson mass square then changes sign below the Planck scale where it is activating the Higgs mechanism.

Abstract:As is known, the Standard Model mainly ideologically and qualitatively focuss the experimenters in their search of new mass states (of EP- elementary particles). The exact quantitative prognosis of their properties, especially of masses, lays outside opportunities of the usual theory. Model of Stationary states of EP within the framework of the Wave Universe Concept [Chechelnitsky, 1980-2001] points on existence of Hierarchy of physically distinguished - stationary (elite, dominant) states described by the mass formulas, in particular, in a range 10-210 Gev/c^2. The states close to: ..., 101.5; 107.3; 112.76-113; 139.5-143; 147.6; 202 Gev/c^2 should be observed. Apparently, the experiment already confirms this prognosis in a range up to 100 Gev/c^2. You see preferable states, observable already now in experiment, it - not rejected by the usual theory as the candidates in constituents of Standard model (for example, not holding Higgs bosons), but quite real displays of stationary (first of all, -dominant) mass states. Last data of L3 (CERN) Collaboration really specify displays of new mass states and close to 103.7; 108.9; 114.5 Gev/c^2.

Abstract:We study scenarios in which there is a hierarchy of two sets of large compactified extra dimensions. One particularly interesting case has a single millimeter size extra dimension and five TeV−1 size dimensions. The Standard Model gauge bosons have Kaluza–Klein excitations with respect to one of the TeV scale dimensions. We discuss astrophysical constraints on this scenario, as well as prospects for signals at future high energy colliders.

Abstract:We live in a four dimensional world. But the idea of unification of fundamental interactions lead us to higher dimensional theories. Recently a new theory with extra dimensions has emerged, where only gravity propagates in the extra dimension and all other interactions are confined in only four dimensions. This theory gives us many new hopes. In earlier theories unification of strong, weak and the electromagnetic forces was possible at around (10^{16}) GeV in a grand unified theory (GUT) and it could get unified with gravity at around the Planck scale of (10^{19}) GeV. With this new idea it is possible to bring down all unification scales within the reach of the next generation accelerators, i.e., around $10^4$ GeV.
