Abstract:In distributed detection systems with wireless sensor networks, the communication between sensors and a fusion center is not perfect due to interference and limited transmitter power at the sensors to combat noise at the fusion center's receiver. The problem of optimizing detection performance with such imperfect communication brings a new challenge to distributed detection. In this paper, sensors are assumed to have independent but nonidentically distributed observations, and a multiple-input/multiple-output (MIMO) channel model is included to account for imperfect communication between the sensors and the fusion center. The J-divergence between the distributions of the detection statistic under different hypotheses is used as a performance criterion in order to provide a tractable analysis. Optimization of performance with individual and total transmitter power constraints on the sensors is studied, and the corresponding power allocation scheme strikes a tradeoff between two factors, the communication channel quality and the local decision quality. For the case with orthogonal channels, under certain conditions, the power allocation can be solved by a weighted water-filling al.gorithm. Simulations show that the proposed power allocation in certain cases only consumes as little as 25% of the total power used by an equal power allocation scheme while achieving the same performance.

J-Divergence Based Decentralized Power Allocation Scheme for Distributed Detection in Wireless Sensor Networks

Abstract:In a wireless sensor network with radar-like sensors, the allocation of the limited power of a sensor node between sensing module and communication module should be deliberated. Obviously, the energy consumption of the whole system can be lowered by jointly optimizing the detection performance of the sensor node and the communication performance between the sensor nodes and the fusion center. Therefore, the J-divergence between the distributions of the received local decisions at the fusion center under different hypotheses is used as a performance criterion to optimize the power allocation of sensor node. Numerical simulations shows that the proposed method can strike a good tradeoff between the communication channel quality and the detection quality of local sensor. Although the proposed method is suboptimum, it outperforms the best allocation scheme obtained by the uniform power allocation scheme and the identical symbol error-rate based Power Allocation under the typical fusion rules considered. Besides, the proposed method is independent of specific fusion rule and only needs local processing, which are another two key characteristics.
An Optimal Power Allocation Algorithm in Distributed Sensing

Abstract:We propose a optimal power allocation algorithm for Distributed Sensing networks under the assumption of a group of sensors observe the same quantity in independent additive observation noises with possibly different variances. Each node computes a local statistic and communicates it to the fusion center over rayleigh fading wireless channels. At the fusion, the linear minimum mean square error (LMMSE) is used. Sensor networks in which energy is a limited resource, our goal is to minimize the distortion under certain power constraints. In this paper, for a given power constraints, equal power transmission strategy and the optimal power allocation strategy is considered. In the later, we first discuss the problem with only a sum power constraint, and then discuss the general case with both sum and individual power constraints. Finally, we demonstrate the applicability of our results through numerical examples. Result shows that the optimal distributed estimation algorithm for homogeneous sensor networks achieves the power gain by turning off sensors that with bad channels and bad observation quality.

Abstract:For wireless sensor network specialized in distributed detection application, communication power of each sensor should dedicate to improve the total detection performance of the system and its utilization should be energy efficient. There is a balance point for communication power. Above the point, it is difficult to improve the system's detection performance. Below it, it is easy to improve system's detection performance by increasing the communication power of sensor node. Therefore, a method was given to guide the seeking of the balance point. Specifically, the objective is to determine the balance point according to the variations of global probability of detection versus channel SNR and allocate the communication power of each node according to the point. Numerical simulation shows that the method is practical and feasible.

Abstract:For multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO)space-time coded architecture based on distributed antenna system (DAS), signals from different transmit antennas arrive asynchronously to the receiving antennas due to the random channel propaga-tion delays among different links. Consequently, linear detection algorithms may be more complicated because of the complexity of inter-symbol interference.Furthermore,the optimal linear detection algorithm would not be obtained directly by applying minimum mean square error(MMSE)criterion. Focusing on the problem above, this paper supposes the optimal linear detection algorithm, named Joint-MMSE detection, in which maximum ratio combining(MRC)is implemented firstly, subsequently MMSE detection, and finally the diversity order by bounding bit error rate(BER).According to the simulation results,MRC-MMSE is authentically the optimal linear detection algorithm of MIMO with distributed transmit antennas.

Abstract:We consider a wireless sensor network, consisting of N heterogeneous sensors and a fusion center (FC), tasked with solving a binary distributed detection problem. Sensors communicate directly with the FC over orthogonal fading channels. Each sensor can harvest randomly arriving energy and store it in a battery. Also, it knows its quantized channel state information (CSI), acquired via a limited feedback channel from the FC. We propose a transmit power control strategy such that the J-divergence based detection metric is maximized, subject to an average transmit power per sensor constraint. The proposed strategy is parametrized in terms of the channel gain quantization thresholds and the scale factors corresponding to the quantization intervals, to strike a balance between the rates of energy harvesting and energy consumption for data transmission. This strategy allows each sensor to adapt its transmit power based on its battery state and its qunatized CSI. Finding the optimal strategy requires solving a non-convex optimization problem that is not differentiable with respect to the optimization <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://variables.We" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> propose near-optimal strategy based on hybrid search methods that have a low-computational complexity.

Massive MIMO-Based Distributed Signal Detection in Multi-Antenna Wireless Sensor Networks

Abstract:For massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) distributed wireless sensor networks, this paper investigates the role of multi-antenna sensors in improving network perception performance. First, we construct a distributed multi-antenna sensor network based on massive MIMO. By using the anti-fading characteristics of multi-antennas, it is better to achieve accurate detection than the single-antenna sensor network. Based on this, we derive a closed-loop expression for the detection probability of the best detector. Then, we consider the case that the sensor power resources are limited, and thus we want to use finite power to achieve higher detection probability. For this reason, the power was optimized by the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM). Moreover, we also prove that only statistical channel state is needed in large-scale antenna scenarios, which avoid the huge overhead of channel state information. Finally, according to the simulation results, the multi-antenna sensor network has better detection performance than the single-antenna sensor network which demonstrates the improved performance of the proposed schemes and also validates the theoretical findings.
Efficient Hybrid Distributed Detectors for Cell-Free Massive MIMO Systems

Abstract:Cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) is a promising technology to address user service inequity and frequent cell re-selection. However, most of the existing distributed detectors are based on the assumption that all users are served by each access point (AP) with simple linear detection methods, resulting in extremely high fronthaul overhead and performance degradation. In this paper, we propose a novel hybrid distributed detector for the user-centric cell-free massive MIMO system. Each AP pre-defines a load threshold to determine whether to use the low-complexity maximum ratio combining (MRC) algorithm or the high-performance expectation propagation (EP) algorithm to ensure detection accuracy while reducing the computational complexity. Moreover, we propose a sparsified EP (SEP) algorithm to further improve the detection performance, from the perspective of user interference suppression via channel sparsified transformation. Based on the properties of the distributed MRC-EP/MRCSEP detection scheme, an efficient hybrid fusion approach is proposed. Numerical results illustrate that the proposed hybrid distributed detectors achieve a good performance-complexity trade-off compared to the existing distributed detectors.
Adaptive Transmission for Distributed Detection in Energy Harvesting Wireless Sensor Networks

Abstract:We consider a wireless sensor network, consisting of N heterogeneous sensors and a fusion center (FC), tasked with detecting a known signal in uncorrelated Gaussian noises. Each sensor can harvest randomly arriving energy and store it in a finite-size battery. Sensors communicate directly with the FC over orthogonal fading channels. Each sensor adapts its transmit symbol power, such that the larger its stored energy and its quantized channel gain are, the higher its transmit symbol power is. To strike a balance between energy harvesting and energy consumption, we formulate two constrained optimization problems (P1) and (P2), where in both problems we seek the jointly optimal local decision thresholds and channel gain quantization thresholds. While in (P1) we maximize the Jdivergence of the received signal densities at the FC, in (P2) we minimize the average total transmit power, subject to certain constraints. We solve (P1) and (P2), assuming that the batteries reach their steady-state. Our simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of our optimization on enhancing the detection performance in (P1), and lowering the average total transmit power in (P2). They also reveal how the energy harvesting rate, the battery size, the sensor observation and communication channel parameters impact obtained solutions.

Abstract:This paper investigates the problem of power allocation for distributed estimation via diffusion in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) with simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT). We consider a WSN consisting of smart sensor nodes (SNs) and common sensor nodes (CNs), and each SN is capable of performing SWIPT via multi-antenna beamforming to its neighboring (i.e., near-tier) CNs. In each diffusion iteration, all nodes collect measurements and exchange intermediate estimates with their neighbors. We first analyze the effect of each SN's beamforming design and each near-tier CN's harvested power allocation on the steady-state network-wide mean square deviation (MSD) of the diffusion least-mean-squares (LMSs) strategy. Then, we formulate a problem to minimize an upper bound MSD by jointly optimizing the global power allocation weights for each SN to perform beamforming, and the local power allocation proportion for each CN to perform measurement collection. We further show that the formulated non-convex problem is decomposable and propose a gradient-based iterative algorithm to find the optimal solution. In addition, for practical implementation, we propose adaptive online approaches to estimate some parameters required for system optimization. Finally, extensive simulation results demonstrate that with optimal power allocation, our proposed scheme improves the MSD performance significantly, compared to the conventional diffusion LMS strategy without wireless power transfer (WPT).

Abstract:For multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless communication system with minimum mean square error (MMSE) detection, power allocation between pilot and data symbols is investigated under MMSE channel estimation in this paper. We first propose a novel soft-output MMSE MIMO detector by taking the channel estimation error into consideration. Then, by random matrix theorem, we propose an effective power allocation scheme between pilot and data symbols to maximize the average lower bound of minimum post-processing signal-to-interference and noise ratio (SINR) for the MIMO system, which has equal number of transmitter and receiver antennas. Simulation results validate our power allocation scheme.

Abstract:Radio resource allocation for multiuser multiple input multiple output orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (MIMO-OFDM) systems is an important issue to improve overall system performance. Although the achievable rate has been adopted for a performance indicator in most resource allocation schemes, it may not be practical if a nonideal receiver including a suboptimal detector is used instead of optimal one. Under this practical circumstance, we study the subcarrier and power allocation to minimize the average bit error rate (BER) subject to a total power constraint. Different allocation algorithms are proposed for various MIMO detectors such as the maximum likelihood (ML) detector, linear detectors and the successive interference cancellation (SIC) detector. We also propose suboptimal algorithms to reduce the complexity. Based on the simulation results, we can confirm that the proposed suboptimal algorithm for each detector can achieve a comparable performance with the optimal allocation with a much lower complexity.

Abstract:We develop an efficient hard-detector for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channels, which adaptively combines maximum-likelihood detection (MLD) and minimum-mean-square-error (MMSE) with a successive interference canceler (SIC) together. Unlike the conventional joint combination scheme which may suffer from considerable degradation in bit-error-rate (BER) performance over correlated channels and where only one data stream is detected by MLD, our proposed scheme adaptively controls the number of data streams to be detected by MLD based on the analytical characterization of reliability for the detection. Simulation results illustrate that near-optimal BER performance can be obtained at much lower computational complexity by the proposed method as compared to existing techniques, regardless of the spatial correlation of the MIMO channels.

Abstract:For multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless communication system with minimum mean square error (MMSE) detection, a new scheme of power allocation between pilot and data symbols is investigated under MMSE channel estimation in this paper. First, we propose a novel soft-output MMSE MIMO detector by taking into consideration the channel estimation error. Then, through the application of random matrix theorem, we propose an efficient scheme for power allocation between pilot and data symbols which maximizes the lower bound of postprocessing signal-to-interference-and-noise ratio (SINR) for MIMO systems with equal number of transmitter and receiver antennas. We have proven the existence and uniqueness of the proposed optimal power allocation settings. Furthermore, our analysis shows that the proposed power allocation is also valid and applicable for those MIMO systems with unequal number of transmitter and receiver antennas. Finally, our extensive simulation results have validated this novel power allocation scheme.

Abstract:Interference alignment (IA) can eliminate the interference among wireless nodes. In a multi-input multi-output (MIMO) heterogeneous sensor network (HSN), nodes need to send out their sensed information, and secondary nodes can coexist with primary nodes without generating any interference by using the IA technology. However, few works have considered the sum utility of secondary nodes. In this paper, we not only eliminate the interference by IA, but also maximize the sum utility of secondary nodes by using a game-theoretic power allocation algorithm in Heterogeneous Sensor Networks. Without losing generality, consider there are one primary node and K secondary nodes in the network. Assuming perfect channel knowledge at the primary node, the rate of the primary node is maximized by a water-filling algorithm and the interference from secondary nodes to the primary node is aligned into the unused spatial dimension. Also, an improved maximum signal-to-interference-plus-noise algorithm using channel reciprocity is proposed for the secondary nodes to eliminate the interference between secondary nodes. In addition, the sum rate of the secondary nodes is maximized by a non-cooperative game-theoretic power allocation algorithm. Simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms in terms of suppressed interference and maximized sum utility of secondary nodes.
On Distributed Detection in EH-WSNs With Finite-State Markov Channel and Limited Feedback

Abstract:We consider a network, tasked with solving binary distributed detection, consisting of N sensors, a fusion center (FC), and a feedback channel from the FC to sensors. Each sensor is capable of harvesting energy and is equipped with a finite size battery to store randomly arrived energy. Sensors process their observations and transmit their symbols to the FC over orthogonal fading channels. The FC fuses the received symbols and makes a global binary decision. We aim at developing adaptive channel-dependent transmit power control policies such that J-divergence based detection metric is maximized at the FC, subject to total transmit power constraint. Modeling the quantized fading channel, the energy arrival, and the battery dynamics as time-homogeneous finite-state Markov chains, and the network lifetime as a geometric random variable, we formulate our power control optimization problem as a discounted infinite-horizon constrained Markov decision process (MDP) problem, where sensors' transmit powers are functions of the battery states, quantized channel gains, and the arrived energies. We utilize stochastic dynamic programming and Lagrangian approach to find the optimal and sub-optimal power control policies. We demonstrate that our sub-optimal policy provides a close-to-optimal performance with a reduced computational complexity and without imposing signaling overhead on sensors.

Abstract:The design of wireless sensor networks for signal detection applications has to consider the limited battery power of the sensor nodes. Considering the scenario of using distributed radar-like sensors to detect the presence of an object through active sensing, we formulate the problem of power allocation between sensing and communication for signal detection under the Neyman-Pearson criterion. An allocation scheme of node's power budget between sensing and communication is presented. The objective is to maximize the global probability of detection under a fixed node's power constraint and a given global probability of false alarm. Simulation results show that the proposed method leads to a big gain in performance. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.
