Abstract:It is demonstrated that the "dressed particle" approach to relativistic local quantum field theories does not contradict Haag's theorem. On the contrary, "dressing" is the way to overcome the difficulties revealed by Haag's theorem.

Abstract:In this paper, a bottom-up architecture-based reliability estimation framework for component based software systems is presented. The approach takes the component composition mechanisms and the utilization frequency of each component into account, and it is general for different architecture styles. We first propose five basic component composition mechanisms and their reliability representation methods. Then we show how to estimate the reliability of heterogeneous architectures using these basic component composition mechanisms through an iterative process. Finally a case study of a stock trading system is used to illustrate the application of our approach.
Combining Model Checking and Testing with an Application to Reliability Prediction and Distribution

Abstract:Testing provides a probabilistic assurance of system correctness. In general, testing relies on the assumptions that the system under test is deterministic so that test cases can be sampled. However, a challenge arises when a system under test behaves non-deterministiclly in a dynamic operating environment because it will be unknown how to sample test cases. In this work, we propose a method combining hypothesis testing and probabilistic model checking so as to provide the ``assurance" and quantify the error bounds. The idea is to apply hypothesis testing to deterministic system components and use probabilistic model checking techniques to lift the results through non-determinism. Furthermore, if a requirement on the level of ``assurance" is given, we apply probabilistic model checking techniques to push down the requirement through non-determinism to individual components so that they can be verified using hypothesis testing. We motivate and demonstrate our method through an application of system reliability prediction and distribution. Our approach has been realized in a toolkit named RaPiD, which has been applied to investigate two real-world systems.
An Adaptive Reliability Analysis Using Path Testing for Complex Component-Based Software Systems

Abstract:With the growing size and complexity of software applications, traditional software reliability methods are insufficient to analyze inter-component interactions of modular software systems. The number of test cases may be extremely large for this application; therefore, it is hard for us to extensively test each software component given resource limitations. In this paper, we propose an adaptive framework of incorporating path testing into reliability estimation for modular software systems. Three estimated methods based on common program structures, namely, sequence, branch, and loop structures, are proposed to calculate the path reliability. Consequently, the derived path reliabilities can be applied to the estimates of software reliability. Some experiments are performed based on two real systems. In addition, the accuracy and correlation with respect to the experiments are investigated by simulation and sensitivity analysis. Experimental results show that the path reliability has a high correlation to the actual software reliability. For software with loop structures, a smaller loop number can be assigned to derive an acceptable estimation of path reliability. Further, the sensitivity analysis can be used to identify critical modules and paths for resource allocation. It can be concluded that the proposed methods are useful and helpful for estimating software reliability and can be adaptively used in the early stages of software development.

Abstract:Software reliability is an important characteristic for most systems. A number of reliability models have been developed to evaluate the reliability of a software system. The parameters in these software reliability models are usually directly obtained from the field failure data. Due to the dynamic properties of the system and the insufficiency of the failure data, the accurate values of the parameters are hard to determine. Therefore, the sensitivity analysis is often used in this stage to deal with this problem. Sensitivity analysis provides a way to analyzing the impact of the different parameters. In order to assess the reliability of a component-based software, we propose a new approach to analyzing the reliability of the system, based on the reliabilities of the individual components and the architecture of the system. Furthermore, we present the sensitivity analysis on the reliability of a component-based software in order to determine which of the components affects the reliability of the system most. Finally, three general examples are evaluated to validate and show the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Abstract:With the continuous improvement of the software quality requirements, more and more attentions are paid to the reliability of software systems. Most of the existing reliability models rely on the cumulative test time to characterize the reliability improvement, while ignoring the saturation effects and software module failure characteristic differences exist, making the test results to low confidence. In this paper, Markov description methods are utilized in reliability calculating process to improve the fictitious-excellence problem in current testing models. Finally, the method is applied to a flight control system software reliability testing. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of the method.

Abstract:Reliability is one of the most important quality dimensions for web services. Based on the proposed reliability model, we propose a QoS-aware service selection process that is CCF-aware. Thus to ensure the selected web services for the composition to meet the reliability requirement.

Abstract:Many studies have been performed on the subject of software reliability, but few explicitly consider the impact of software testing on the reliability process. This paper presents two important issues on software reliability modeling and software reliability economics: testing effort and efficiency. First, we will discuss on how to extend the logistic testing-effort function into a general form. The generalized logistic testing-effort function has the advantage of relating the work profile more directly to the natural flow of software development. Therefore, it can be used to describe the actual consumption of resources during software development process and get a conspicuous improvement in modeling testing-effort expenditures. Furthermore, we will incorporate the generalized logistic testing-effort function into software reliability modeling and its fault-prediction capability is evaluated through four numerical experiments on real data. Then, we will address the effects of automated techniques or tools on increasing the efficiency of software testing. New testing techniques will usually increase test coverage.We propose a modified software reliability cost model to reflect these effects. From the simulation results, we obtain a powerful software economic policy which clearly indicates the benefits of applying new automated testing techniques and tools during software development process.

Abstract:This paper is an attempt to relax and improve the assumptions regarding software reliability modeling. To approximate reality much more closely, we take into account the concepts of testing compression factor and the quantified ratio of faults to failures in the modeling. Numerical examples based on real failure data show that the proposed framework has a fairly good prediction capability. Further, we also address the optimal software release time problem and conduct a detailed sensitivity analysis through the proposed model.

Abstract:Due to the propagation, amplification, and concatenation in a failure process, the reliabilities of repairable multistate complex mechanical systems (RMCMSs) may be affected by a significant fluctuation due to a small exception associated with a reliability indicator. Focused on the problems arising from the lack of propagation relationships among fault modes, functional components, and failure causes in conventional reliability models, a novel framework for reliability modelling is proposed to comprehensively analyse the reliabilities of RMCMSs. First, the reliability models are abstracted as weighted and directed networks with five layers. Second, an improved failure mode and effects analysis (IFMEA) method combined with the D-number method and VIKOR approach is presented to determine the importance of reliability nodes. Third, a cut set of the reliability model is generated by any exception of a reliability indicator by considering the propagation relationships, and the reliability sensibility index is defined to characterize the fluctuations in system reliability. The effectiveness of the proposed framework is demonstrated in an actual reliability modelling application. As an intuitive method, the proposed framework inherits the advantages of conventional models but overcomes the drawbacks of these existing methods. Therefore, this method can be flexibly and efficiently used in the reliability modelling of RMCMSs. Moreover, the approach provides a foundation for comprehensive and dynamic reliability analysis and the failure mechanism mining of RMCMSs, and it can be used in other engineering applications.

Abstract:Considerable research efforts have been expended in modeling load-sharing systems. The existing models, however, have various limitations, such as being limited to the exponential time-to-failure distribution, constant component performances, or performances without constraints. In this article, we make contributions by modeling a dynamic load-sharing system (DLSS), where the performance of each component is dynamic according to prespecified load-sharing principles and is limited by its capacity constraint. Moreover, the capacity constraint of a component can reduce due to degradations. In the proposed model, increasing failure rates are also involved since the surviving components must share the load of the failed component and continue working with increasing stresses. When the desired performance for a component exceeds the limitation, the entire system fails. An extended Markov process (EMP) method is proposed for evaluating the reliability of the considered DLSS with nonrepairable components. The proposed analytical method is flexible in handling arbitrary component time-to-failure distributions and in handling diverse load allocation mechanisms. Numerical studies of a power transmission system and a water transmission system are provided to validate the proposed method and its advantages. Effects of several model parameters are also investigated through case studies.

Abstract:Many software systems need to provide services continuously and uninterruptedly. Meanwhile, these software systems need to keep evolving continuously to fix bugs, add functions, improve algorithms, adapt to new running environments and platforms, or prevent potential problems. This situation makes online evolution an important issue in the field of software maintenance and evolution. This paper proposes a component-based approach to online software evolution. Nowadays component technology has been widely adopted. Component technology facilitates software evolution, but also introduces some new issues. In our approach, an application server is used to evolve the application, without special support from the compiler or operating system. Abstract:With the scenario of reliability estimation, a geometrically complex mechanical/structural component with multiple damage sites should be treated as a system, since there are many links (damage sites) of similar failure probabilities on any of such a component and the failures of the individual damage sites are not perfectly dependent of each other. Conventional system reliability model is not applicable to such a system because of the statistical dependence among the element (damage site) failures. To estimate the reliability of a mechanical system (or a complex component) in which element (damage site) failure dependence plays an important role, a model capable of reflecting the effect of element failure dependence is necessary. The present paper develops models which can deal with multiple damage sites and multiple failure mechanisms, reflect the dependence among element failure events and that among different failure modes. Such models are applicable to both typical mechanical systems and various components.
A Hierarchical Reliability Model of Service-Based Software System

Abstract:Service-oriented architecture (SOA) introduces a new paradigm where data, service, and the service composition logic are decoupled in an open environment. Software systems are built and evolved online by dynamic discovering and binding to the open services accessible through standard protocols. It requires new reliability modeling techniques to facilitate the analysis of dynamic collaborations and to be adaptable to the changes of service composition and system configuration at runtime. The paper proposes a hierarchical reliability model, in which the system reliability is calculated according to the layered superimposition of the reliabilities of data, services, fault-tolerant mechanism and service composition logic. At the basic-service layer, the service reliability is considered in the context of data reliability and service pools with backup alternatives. At the composition layer, a DTMC (discrete time Markov chain) model is created for analyzing system reliability based on the reliability of the constituent services and their execution rate which are decided by the composite control structure and the operation scenarios. The DTMC state transition diagram can be automatically generated by analyzing and transforming the layered superimposition of the application following the transformation rules. The hierarchical modeling framework enables change adaptation at various levels. In addition, the models can be continuously learned and dynamically adjusted by profiling on the runtime monitoring log files.
Enhancing and Measuring the Predictive Capabilities of Testing-Effort Dependent Software Reliability Models

Abstract:Software testing is necessary to accomplish highly reliable software systems. If the project manager can conduct well-planned testing activities, the consumption of related testing-resources will be cost-effective. Over the past 30 years, many software reliability growth models (SRGMs) have been proposed to estimate the reliability growth of software, and they are mostly applicable to the late stages of testing in software development. Thus far, it appears that most SRGMs do not take possible changes of testing-effort consumption rates into consideration. However, in some cases, the policies of testing-resource allocation could be changed or adjusted. Thus, in this paper, we will incorporate the important concept of multiple change-points into Weibull-type testing-effort functions. The applicability and performance of the proposed models are demonstrated through two real data sets. Experimental results show that the proposed models give a fairly accurate prediction capability. Finally, based on the proposed SRGM, constructive rules are developed for determining optimal software release times.

Abstract:In the context of component-based software development, this paper proposes an approach to transforming UML diagrams of software architecture to Markov chain for the quantitative evaluation of reliability. Based on the component-based software architecture, it utilizes four types of UML diagrams: use case, sequence, activity and component diagrams, extending them and annotating them with reliability related attributes. Then, the diagrams are transformed into a Markov chain based analysis model by constructing an intermediate model called Component Transition Graph (CTG). Result of this transformation can be directly used in the existing analysis methods to predict software reliability, which facilitates the analysis task of software designer. © by Institute of Software, the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Abstract:The component-based software system has a core that is based on architecture design. Predicting the reliability growth trends of a software system in the early stages of the development process is conducive to reducing waste and loss caused by blind development. Restricted by the lack of information and data in the design and integration phase, it is difficult to implement reliability prediction research at this stage. In this article, we focus on a software system in which the reliability of each component follows the G-O model. First, two system-level parameters, which are the total number of system faults and the detection rate of the system faults, are defined. Then, by studying the relationship between the total number of faults and the detection rate of faults between the components and the system, the defined system parameters are calculated from the known component parameters. On this basis, and by incorporating the system parameters, we construct a reliability growth model for the software system, called the component-based generalized G-O model (CB-GGOM). Besides, two approximate models of CB-GGOM are proposed to facilitate reliability evaluation of the software system in the early and stable stages of the integration test. An engineering explanation of the proposed models is also provided, and their effectiveness is verified through simulation and with an authentic example. Since the proposed models are formulated without any integration test data, they are beneficial for developers to optimize test strategies of the software system and implement defect prevention in advance.

Abstract:Components are often subject to multiple competing degradation processes. This paper presents a reliability assessment framework for multicomponent systems whose component degradation processes are modeled by multistate and physics-based models with limited statistical degradation/failure data. The piecewise-deterministic Markov process modeling approach is employed to treat dependencies between the degradation processes within one component or/and among components. A computational method combining binary decision diagrams (BDDs) and Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) is developed to solve the model. A BDD is used to encode the fault tree of the system and obtain all the paths leading to system failure or operation. MCS is used to generate random realizations of the model and compute the system reliability. A case study is presented, with reference to one branch of the residual heat removal system of a nuclear power plant.

Abstract:This paper presents an approach for modeling software common cause failures (CCFs) within digital instrumentation and control (I&C) systems. CCFs consist of a concurrent failure between two or more components due to a shared failure cause and coupling mechanism. This work emphasizes the importance of identifying software-centric attributes related to the coupling mechanisms necessary for simultaneous failures of redundant software components. The groups of components that share coupling mechanisms are called common cause component groups (CCCGs). Most CCF models rely on operational data as the basis for establishing CCCG parameters and predicting CCFs. This work is motivated by two primary concerns: (1) a lack of operational and CCF data for estimating software CCF model parameters; and (2) the need to model single components as part of multiple CCCGs simultaneously. A hybrid approach was developed to account for these concerns by leveraging existing techniques: a modified beta factor model allows single components to be placed within multiple CCCGs, while a second technique provides software-specific model parameters for each CCCG. This hybrid approach provides a means to overcome the limitations of conventional methods while offering support for design decisions under the limited data scenario.
