Abstract:Analogues of invariant theory's well-known Roberts theorem are proved for ternary forms. We established that covariants, contravariants and mixed concomitants of a ternary form are uniquely determined by their lead coefficients.

Abstract:In the first part of this work \cite{Du}, a quantitative supplement to the Hasse principle was given for the count of the number of automorphic orbits of primitive zeros of a genus of ternary quadratic forms. This sequel contains, for certain special forms, an independent and elementary proof of this result. When combined with other results of \cite{Du}, this proof also leads to a refinement of an asymptotic result of \cite{Du} and some corollaries for these special forms.

Abstract:We study partially and totally associative ternary algebras of first and second kind. Assuming the vector space underlying a ternary algebra to be a topological space and a triple product to be continuous mapping we consider the trivial vector bundle over a ternary algebra and show that a triple product induces a structure of binary algebra in each fiber of this vector bundle. We find the sufficient and necessary condition for a ternary multiplication to induce a structure of associative binary algebra in each fiber of this vector bundle. Given two modules over the algebras with involutions we construct a ternary algebra which is used as a building block for a Lie algebra. We construct ternary algebras of cubic matrices and find four different totally associative ternary multiplications of second kind of cubic matrices. It is proved that these are the only totally associative ternary multiplications of second kind in the case of cubic matrices. We describe a ternary analog of Lie algebra of cubic matrices of second order which is based on a notion of j-commutator and find all commutation relations of generators of this algebra.

Abstract:An algebraic structure with two constants and one ternary operation, which is not completely commutative, is put forward to accommodate ternary Boolean algebras. When the ternary operation is interpreted as Church's conditioned disjunction, Boolean algebras are characterized as a subvariety. Different interpretations for the ternary operation lead to distinct subvarieties. Rings and near-rings of characteristic 2 are used to illustrate the procedure.

Ternary is Still Good for Parikh Matrices

Abstract:The focus of this work is the study of Parikh matrices with emphasis on two concrete problems. In the first part of our presentation we show that a conjecture by Dick at al. in 2021 only stands in the case of ternary alphabets, while providing counterexamples for larger alphabets. In particular, we show that the only type of distinguishability in the case of 3-letter alphabets is the trivial one. The second part of the paper builds on the notion of Parikh matrices for projections of words, discussed initially in this work, and answers, once more in the case of a ternary alphabet, a question posed by Atanasiu et al. in 2022 with regards to the minimal Hamming distance in between words sharing a congruency class.

Ternary Associativity and Ternary Lie Algebra at Cube Root of Unity

Abstract:We propose a new approach to extending the notion of commutator and Lie algebra to algebras with ternary multiplication laws. Our approach is based on ternary associativity of the first and second kind. We propose a ternary commutator, which is a linear combination of six (all permutations of three elements) triple products. The coefficients of this linear combination are the cube roots of unity. We find an identity for the ternary commutator that holds due to ternary associativity of the first or second kind. The form of the found identity is determined by the permutations of the general affine group GA(1,5). We consider the found identity as an analogue of the Jacobi identity in the ternary case. We introduce the concept of a ternary Lie algebra at the cubic root of unity and give examples of such an algebra constructed using ternary multiplications of rectangular and three-dimensional matrices. We point out the connection between the structure constants of a ternary Lie algebra with three generators and an irreducible representation of the rotation group.

Abstract:We study real ternary forms whose real rank equals the generic complex rank, and we characterize the semialgebraic set of sums of powers representations with that rank. Complete results are obtained for quadrics and cubics. For quintics we determine the real rank boundary: it is a hypersurface of degree 168. For quartics, sextics and septics we identify some of the components of the real rank boundary. The real varieties of sums of powers are stratified by discriminants that are derived from hyperdeterminants.

Abstract:We develop the algebraic formalism of the formal ternary laws of C. Walter and we compare them to Buchstaber's 2-valued formal group laws. We also compute the "elementary" formal ternary laws (after inverting 2) using a computer program available online.

Abstract:The dual codes of the ternary linear codes of the residual designs of biplanes on 56 points are used to prove the nonexistence of quasi-symmetric 2-$(56,12,9)$ and 2-$(57,12,11)$ designs with intersection numbers 0 and 3, and the nonexistence of a 2-$(267,57,12)$ quasi-3 design. The nonexistence of a 2-$(149,37,9)$ quasi-3 design is also proved.

Abstract:We determine the structure of the graded ring of Siegel modular forms of degree 3. It is generated by 19 modular forms, among which we identify a homogeneous system of parameters with 7 forms of weights 4, 12, 12, 14, 18, 20 and 30. We also give a complete dictionary between the Dixmier-Ohno invariants of ternary quartics and the above generators.

Abstract:The theory of ternary semigroups, groups and algebras is reformulated in the abstract arrow language. Then using the reversing arrow ansatz we define ternary comultiplication, bialgebras and Hopf algebras and investigate their properties. The main property "to be binary derived" is considered in detail. The co-analog of Post theorem is formulated. It is shown that there exist 3 types of ternary coassociativity, 3 types of ternary counits and 2 types of ternary antipodes. Some examples are also presented.

Abstract:Let $F$ be a non-degenerate integral ternary quadratic form and let $m_0\in\mathbb{Z}_{\neq 0}$. We study growth of rational points on the affine quadric $(F=m_0)$ and show that they are equidistributed in the adelic space off a finite place. This is closely related to Linnik's problem. Our approach is based on the $\delta$-variant of the Hardy--Littlewood circle method developed by Heath-Brown.

Abstract:We exhibit, for each even degree, a ternary form of rank strictly greater than the maximum rank of monomials. Together with an earlier result in the odd case, this gives the lower bound \[\operatorname{r_{max}}(3,d)\ge\left\lfloor\frac{d^2+2d+5}4\right\rfloor\] for $d\ge 2$, where $\operatorname{r_{max}}(n,d)$ denotes the maximum rank of degree $d$ forms in $n$ variables with coefficients in an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero.

On a geometric method for the identifiability of forms

Abstract:We introduce a new criterion which tests if a given decomposition of a given ternary form $T$ of even degree is unique. The criterion is based on the analysis of the Hilbert function of the projective set of points $Z$ associated to the decomposition, and on the Terracini's Lemma which describes tangent spaces to secant varieties. The criterion works in a range for the length of the decomposition which is equivalent to the range in which the reshaped Kruskal's criterion (see [1]) works. Our criterion determines an algorithm for the identifiability of $T$ which is sensibly faster than algorithms based on the reshaped Kruskal's criterion, especially when the set of points $Z$ is not in general position.

Abstract:The symmetric difference of the [Formula: see text]-binomial coefficients [Formula: see text] was introduced by Reiner and Stanton. They proved that [Formula: see text] is symmetric and unimodal for [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] even by using the representation theory for Lie algebras. Based on Sylvester’s proof of the unimodality of the Gaussian coefficients, as conjectured by Cayley, we find an interpretation of the unimodality of [Formula: see text] in terms of semi-invariants. In the spirit of the strict unimodality of the Gaussian coefficients due to Pak and Panova, we prove the strict unimodality of the symmetric difference [Formula: see text], except for the two terms at both ends, where [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text] and at least one of [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] is even.

Abstract:In finitely cocomplete homological categories, co-smash products give rise to (possibly higher-order) commutators of subobjects. We use binary and ternary co-smash products and the associated commutators to give characterisations of internal crossed modules and internal categories, respectively. The ternary terms are redundant if the category has the Smith is Huq property, which means that two equivalence relations on a given object commute precisely when their normalisations do. In fact, we show that the difference between the Smith commutator of such relations and the Huq commutator of their normalisations is measured by a ternary commutator, so that the Smith is Huq property itself can be characterised by the relation between the latter two commutators. This allows to show that the category of loops does not have the Smith is Huq property, which also implies that ternary commutators are generally not decomposable into nested binary ones. Thus, in contexts where Smith is Huq need not hold, we obtain a new description of internal categories, Beck modules and double central extensions, as well as a decomposition formula for the Smith commutator. The ternary commutator now also appears in the Hopf formula for the third homology with coefficients in the abelianisation functor.

The classification and representations of positive definite ternary quadratic forms of level 4N

Abstract:Classifications and representations are two main topics in the theory of quadratic forms. In this paper, we consider these topics of ternary quadratic forms. For a given squarefree integer $N$, first we give the classification of positive definite ternary quadratic forms of level $4N$ explicitly. Second, we give explicit formulas of the weighted sum of representations over each class in every genus of ternary quadratic forms of level $4N$, which are involved with modified Hurwitz class number. In the proof of the main results, we use the relations among ternary quadratic forms, quaternion algebras, and Jacobi forms. As a corollary, we get the formula for the class number of positive ternary quadratic forms of level $4N$. As applications, we derive an explicit base of Eisenstein series space of modular forms of weight $3/2$ and level $4N$, and give new proofs of some interesting identities involving representation number of ternary quadratic forms.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a systematic approach to the study of the composition of ternary relations from the point of view of the degrees of freedom available when linking a 3-tuple to two given 3-tuples. We propose a way of enumerating all possible 4-point compositions (one degree of freedom) and 5-point compositions (two degrees of freedom) of ternary relations, and establish a correspondence between them. Furthermore, we identify the associative compositions and explore interesting mixed-associativity cases. Finally, we use the tools of projection and cylindrical extension to relate the 4-point and 5-point compositions of ternary relations to the 3-point compositions of binary relations.
