Abstract:A lattice Delaunay polytope is known as perfect if the only ellipsoid, that can be circumscribed about it, is its Delaunay sphere. Perfect Delaunay polytopes are in one-to-one correspondence with arithmetic equivalence classes of positive quadratic functions on the n-dimensional integral lattice that can be recovered, up to a scale factor, from the representations of its minimum. We develop a structural theory of such polytopes and describe all known perfect Delaunay polytopes in dimensions one through eight. We suspect that this list is complete.

Abstract:You might know that the name "tree transducers" refers to various kinds of automata that compute functions on ranked trees, i.e. terms over a first-order signature. But have you ever wondered about how to remember what a macro tree transducer does? Or what are the connections between top-down tree(-to-string) transducers, multi bottom-up tree(-to-string) transducers, tree-walking transducers, (invisible) pebble tree transducers, monadic second-order transductions, unfoldings of rooted directed acyclic graphs (i.e. term graphs) -- and what happens when the functions that they compute are composed? The answers may be found in old papers (mostly coauthored by Engelfriet), but maybe you can save some time by first looking at this short note.

On Shuffling and Splitting Automata

Abstract:We consider a class of finite state three-tape transducers which models the operation of shuffling and splitting words. We present them as automata over the so-called Shuffling Monoid. These automata can be seen as either shufflers or splitters interchangeably. We prove that functionality is decidable for splitters, and we also show that the equivalence between functional splitters is decidable. Moreover, in the deterministic case, the algorithm for equivalence is polynomial on the number of states of the splitter.

Arbitrary-arity Tree Automata and QCTL

Abstract:We introduce a new class of automata (which we coin EU-automata) running on infininte trees of arbitrary (finite) arity. We develop and study several algorithms to perform classical operations (union, intersection, complement, projection, alternation removal) for those automata, and precisely characterise their complexities. We also develop algorithms for solving membership and emptiness for the languages of trees accepted by EU-automata. We then use EU-automata to obtain several algorithmic and expressiveness results for the temporal logic QCTL (which extends CTL with quantification over atomic propositions) and for MSO. On the one hand, we obtain decision procedures with optimal complexity for QCTL satisfiability and model checking; on the other hand, we obtain an algorithm for translating any QCTL formula with k quantifier alternations to formulas with at most one quantifier alternation, at the expense of a $(k + 1)$-exponential blow-up in the size of the formulas. Using the same techniques, we prove that any MSO formula can be translated into a formula with at most four quantifier alternations (and only two second-order-quantifier alternations), again with a $(k + 1)$-exponential blow-up in the size of the formula.

Abstract:We prove that for a given deterministic top-down transducer with look-ahead it is decidable whether or not its translation is definable (1)~by a linear top-down tree transducer or (2)~by a tree homomorphism. We present algorithms that construct equivalent such transducers if they exist.

The complexity of separability for semilinear sets and Parikh automata

Abstract:In a separability problem, we are given two sets $K$ and $L$ from a class $\mathcal{C}$, and we want to decide whether there exists a set $S$ from a class $\mathcal{S}$ such that $K\subseteq S$ and $S\cap L=\emptyset$. In this case, we speak of separability of sets in $\mathcal{C}$ by sets in $\mathcal{S}$. We study two types of separability problems. First, we consider separability of semilinear sets by recognizable sets of vectors (equivalently, by sets definable by quantifier-free monadic Presburger formulas). Second, we consider separability of languages of Parikh automata by regular languages. A Parikh automaton is a machine with access to counters that can only be incremented, and have to meet a semilinear constraint at the end of the run. Both of these separability problems are known to be decidable with elementary complexity. Our main results are that both problems are coNP-complete. In the case of semilinear sets, coNP-completeness holds regardless of whether the input sets are specified by existential Presburger formulas, quantifier-free formulas, or semilinear representations. Our results imply that recognizable separability of rational subsets of $\Sigma^*\times\mathbb{N}^d$ (shown decidable by Choffrut and Grigorieff) is coNP-complete as well. Another application is that regularity of deterministic Parikh automata (where the target set is specified using a quantifier-free Presburger formula) is coNP-complete as well.

Abstract:The notion of transducer integer sequences is considered through a series of examples. By definition, transducer integer sequences are integer sequences produced, under a suitable interpretation, by finite automata encoding tree morphisms (length and prefix preserving transformations of words). Transducer integer sequences are related to the notion of self-similar groups and semigroups, as well as to the notion of automatic sequences.

Abstract:Theory of tree transducers provides a foundation for understanding expressiveness and complexity of analysis problems for specification languages for transforming hierarchically structured data such as XML documents. We introduce streaming tree transducers as an analyzable, executable, and expressive model for transforming unranked ordered trees in a single pass. Given a linear encoding of the input tree, the transducer makes a single left-to-right pass through the input, and computes the output in linear time using a finite-state control, a visibly pushdown stack, and a finite number of variables that store output chunks that can be combined using the operations of string-concatenation and tree-insertion. We prove that the expressiveness of the model coincides with transductions definable using monadic second-order logic (MSO). Existing models of tree transducers either cannot implement all MSO-definable transformations, or require regular look ahead that prohibits single-pass implementation. We show a variety of analysis problems such as type-checking and checking functional equivalence are solvable for our model.

Abstract:Tree transductions are binary relations of finite trees. For tree transductions defined by non-deterministic top-down tree transducers, inclusion, equivalence and synthesis problems are known to be undecidable. Adding origin semantics to tree transductions, i.e., tagging each output node with the input node it originates from, is a known way to recover decidability for inclusion and equivalence. The origin semantics is rather rigid, in this work, we introduce a similarity measure for transducers with origin semantics and show that we can decide inclusion, equivalence and synthesis problems for origin-close non-deterministic top-down tree transducers.

Abstract:A separation of a graph $G$ is a partition $(A_1, A_2, C)$ of $V(G)$ such that $A_1$ is anticomplete to $A_2$. A classic result from Robertson and Seymour's Graph Minors Project states that there is a correspondence between tree decompositions and laminar collections of separations. A many-sided separation of a graph $G$ is a partition $(A_1, \ldots, A_k, C)$ of $V(G)$ such that $A_i$ is anticomplete to $A_j$ for all $1 \leq i < j \leq k$. In this note, we show a correspondence between tree decompositions with a certain parity property, called deciduous tree decompositions, and laminar collections of many-sided separations.

Abstract:A proof is given of a general theorem showing that for certain sets W a certain topological lower bound is valid in the algebraic computation tree model, even if the inputs are restricted to be integers. The theorem can be used to prove tight lower bounds for the integral-constrained form of many basic problems, such as element distinctness, set disjointness, and finding the convex hull. Through further transformations it leads to lower bounds for problems such as the integer max gap and closest pair of a simple polygon. The proof involves a nontrivial extension of the Milnor-Thom techniques for finding upper bounds on the Betti numbers of algebraic varieties

Abstract:We discuss the stochastic interpretation of a control system determined by a system of differential equations on a tree. For example, such a system on a finite tree arises after replacing the coefficients of the equation on an interval with stochastic processes in discrete time and with finitely many states. The countable number of states will correspond to a more complicated and, at the same time, more general case of an infinite tree, which is under consideration.

Abstract:Tree transducers are formal automata that transform trees into other trees. Many varieties of tree transducers have been explored in the automata theory literature, and more recently, in the machine translation literature. In this paper I review T and xT transducers, situate them among related formalisms, and show how they can be used to implement rules for machine translation systems that cover all of the cross-language structural divergences described in Bonnie Dorr's influential article on the topic. I also present an implementation of xT transduction, suitable and convenient for experimenting with translation rules.

Abstract:A tree automatic structure is a structure whose domain can be encoded by a regular tree language such that each relation is recognisable by a finite automaton processing tuples of trees synchronously. Words can be regarded as specific simple trees and a structure is word automatic if it is encodable using only these trees. The question naturally arises whether a given tree automatic structure is already word automatic. We prove that this problem is decidable for tree automatic scattered linear orderings. Moreover, we show that in case of a positive answer a word automatic presentation is computable from the tree automatic presentation.

Abstract:We introduce the class of tree constraint automata with data values in Z (equipped with the less than relation and equality predicates to constants) and we show that the nonemptiness problem is ExpTime-complete. Using an automata-based approach, we establish that the satisfiability problem for CTL(Z) (CTL with constraints in Z) is ExpTime-complete and the satisfiability problem for CTL*(Z) is 2ExpTime-complete solving a longstanding open problem (only decidability was known so far). By-product results with other concrete domains and other logics, such as description logics with concrete domains, are also briefly presented.

Nominal Tree Automata With Name Allocation

Abstract:Data trees serve as an abstraction of structured data, such as XML documents. A number of specification formalisms for languages of data trees have been developed, many of them adhering to the paradigm of register automata, which is based on storing data values encountered on the tree in registers for subsequent comparison with further data values. Already on word languages, the expressiveness of such automata models typically increases with the power of control (e.g. deterministic, non-deterministic, alternating). Language inclusion is typically undecidable for non-deterministic or alternating models unless the number of registers is radically restricted, and even then often remains non-elementary. We present an automaton model for data trees that retains a reasonable level of expressiveness, in particular allows non-determinism and any number of registers, while admitting language inclusion checking in elementary complexity, in fact in parametrized exponential time. We phrase the description of our automaton model in the language of nominal sets, building on the recently introduced paradigm of explicit name allocation in nominal automata.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose compositional separation logic with tree predicates (CSLTP), where properties such as sortedness and height-balancedness of complex data structures (for instance, AVL trees and red-black trees) can be fully specified. We show that the satisfiability problem of CSLTP is decidable. The main technical ingredient of the decision procedure is to compute the least fixed point of a class of inductively defined predicates that are non-linear and involve dense-order and difference-bound constraints, which are of independent interests.
On Tree Automata, Generating Functions, and Differential Equations

Abstract:In this paper we introduce holonomic tree automata: a common extension of weighted tree automata and holonomic recurrences. We show that the generating function of the tree series represented by such an automaton is differentially algebraic. Conversely, we give an algorithm that inputs a differentially algebraic power series, represented as a solution of a rational dynamical system, and outputs an automaton whose generating function is the given series. Such an automaton yields a recurrence that can be used to compute the terms of the power series. We use the algorithm to obtain automaton representations of exponential generating functions of families of combinatorial objects given as combinatorial species. Using techniques from differential algebra, we show that it is decidable both whether two automata represent the same formal tree series and whether they have the same generating function.

Abstract:In this paper, we look at an unambiguous version of Simon's forest factorization theorem, a very deep result which has wide connections in algebra, logic and automata. Given a morphism $\varphi$ from $\Sigma^+$ to a finite semigroup $S$, we construct a universal, unambiguous automaton A which is "good" for $\varphi$. The goodness of $\Aa$ gives a very easy proof for the forest factorization theorem, providing a Ramsey split for any word in $\Sigma^{\infty}$ such that the height of the Ramsey split is bounded by the number of states of A. An important application of synthesizing good automata from the morphim $\varphi$ is in the construction of regular transducer expressions (RTE) corresponding to deterministic two way transducers.
