Abstract:We analyzed conditions for Hopf and Turing instabilities to occur in two-component fractional reaction-diffusion systems. We showed that the eigenvalue spectrum and fractional derivative order mainly determine the type of instability and the dynamics of the system. The results of the linear stability analysis are confirmed by computer simulation of the model with cubic nonlinearity for activator variable and linear dependance for the inhibitor one. It is shown that pattern formation conditions of instability and transient dynamics are different than for a standard system. As a result, more complicated pattern formation dynamics takes place in fractional reaction-diffusion systems.

Abstract:In this paper, the asymptotic stability with probability one of multi-degree-of-freedom (MDOF) nonlinear oscillators with fractional derivative damping parametrically excited by Gaussian white noises is investigated. A stochastic averaging method and the Khasminskii’s procedure are employed to evaluate the largest Lyapunov exponent, whose sign determines the stability of the system. As an example, two coupled nonlinear oscillators with fractional derivative damping is worked out to demonstrate the proposed procedure and to examine the effect of fractional order on the stochastic stability of system. In particular, the case of factional order more than 1 is studied for the first time.

Abstract:Mittag–Leffler stability is a property of fractional-order dynamical systems, also called fractional Lyapunov stability, requiring the evolution of the positive-definite functions to be Mittag–Leffler, rather than the exponential meaning in Lyapunov stability theory. Similarly, fractional Lyapunov function plays an important role in the study of Mittag–Leffler stability. The aim of this study is to create closed-loop systems for commensurate fractional-order non-linear systems (FONSs) with Mittag–Leffler stability. We extend the classical backstepping to fractional-order backstepping for stabilising (uncertain) FONSs. For this purpose, several conditions of control fractional Lyapunov functions for FONSs are investigated in terms of Mittag–Leffler stability. Within this framework, (uncertain) FONSs Mittag–Leffler stabilisation is solved via fractional-order backstepping and the global convergence of closed-loop systems is guaranteed. Finally, the efficiency and applicability of the proposed fractional-order backstepping are demonstrated in several examples.

Abstract:Lyapunov direct method provides a very effective approach to analyze stability of nonlinear systems. However, the well-known Leibniz rule is not suitable for fractional derivatives, which is the main reason that there are few analytical results on stability of fractional systems. This paper deals with stability of fractional nonlinear singular systems and its applications in synchronization of complex dynamical networks. Applying fractional Lyapunov direct method and S-procedure lemma, several sufficient conditions on stability and a simple condition on global synchronization of a class of fractional singular dynamical networks in terms of linear matrix inequalities are derived. Finally, two simple examples are given to show that our proposed methods are simple and convenient in computation.

Abstract:Fractional derivatives provide a prominent platform for various chemical and physical system with memory and hereditary properties, while most of the previous differential systems used to describe dynamic phenomena including oscillation quenching are integer order. Here, effects of fractional derivative on the transition process from oscillatory state to stationary state are illustrated for the first time on mean-filed coupled oscillators. It is found the fractional derivative could induce the emergence of a first-order discrete transition with hysteresis between oscillatory and stationary state. However, if the fractional derivative is smaller than the critical value, the transition will be invertible. Besides, the theoretical conditions for the steady state are calculated via Lyapunov indirect method which probe that, the backward transition point is unrelated to mean-field density. Our result is a step forward in enlightening the control mechanism of explosive phenomenon, which is of great importance to highlight the function of fractional-order derivative in the emergence of collective behaviors on coupled nonlinear model.

Abstract:The periodic motions of the fractional order and/or delayed nonlinear systems are investigated in the frequency domain using a harmonic balance method with the analytical gradients of the nonlinear quality constraints and the sensitivity information of the Fourier coefficients can also obtained. The properties of fractional order derivatives and trigonometric functions are utilized to construct the fractional order derivatives, delayed and product operational matrices. The operational matrices are used to derive the analytical formulae of nonlinear systems of algebraic equations. The stability of periodic solutions for the delayed nonlinear systems is identified by an eigenvalue analysis of quasi-polynomials characteristic equations. Sensitivity analysis is performed to study the influence of the structural parameters on the system responses. Finally, three numerical examples are presented to illustrate the validity and feasibility of the developed method. It is concluded that the proposed methodology has the potential to facilitate highly efficient optimization, as well as sensitivity and uncertainty analysis of nonlinear systems with fractional derivatives and/or time delayed.

Abstract:In this paper, we first verify that fractional order systems using Caputo’s or Riemann–Liouville’s derivative can be represented by the continuous frequency distributed model with initial value carefully allocated. Then, the relation of the stability between the fractional order system and its corresponding integer order system is discussed and it is proven that stability of integer order system implies the stability of its corresponding fractional order system under some mild conditions. Moreover, we extend the stability theorems to the finite-dimensional case since fractional order systems are always implemented by approximation. Some illustrative examples are finally provided to show the usage and effectiveness of the proposed stability theorems.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the stability of nonlinear fractional-order time varying systems with Caputo derivative. By using Laplace transform, Mittag-Leffler function, and the Gronwall inequality, the sufficient condition that ensures local stability of fractional-order systems with fractional order alpha : 0 < alpha < 1 and 1 < alpha < 2 is proposed, respectively. Moreover, the condition of the stability of fractional-order systems with a state-feedback controller is been put forward. Finally, a numerical example is presented to show the validity and feasibility of the proposed method.

Abstract:This paper is devoted to studying the asymptotic behaviour of solutions to generalized non-commensurate fractional systems. To this end, we first consider fractional systems with rational orders and introduce a criterion that is necessary and sufficient to ensure the stability of such systems. Next, from the fractional-order pseudospectrum definition proposed by Šanca et al., we formulate the concept of a rational approximation for the fractional spectrum of a noncommensurate fractional systems with general, not necessarily rational, orders. Our first important new contribution is to show the equivalence between the fractional spectrum of a noncommensurate linear system and its rational approximation. With this result in hand, we use ideas developed in our earlier work to demonstrate the stability of an equilibrium point to nonlinear systems in arbitrary finite-dimensional spaces. A second novel aspect of our work is the fact that the approach is constructive. Finally, we give numerical simulations to illustrate the merit of the proposed theoretical results.

Abstract:In this study, the resonance, bifurcation and stability of a class of fractional quintic systems are discussed. The implicit function expressions of the amplitude–frequency relationship of the steady-state response of the system under Coulomb dry friction, linear viscous damping, square damping, and cubic damping are derived by using the average method. Lyapunov’s first method is used to study the stability of the steady-state response of the system under the action of Coulomb dry friction, linear viscous damping, cubic damping, and analyze the influence of system parameters on the steady-state response. The amplitude–frequency curve of the system is drawn based on the implicit function expression and compared with the numerical solution. The primary resonance behavior of the system under four damping conditions is discussed when the fractional differential order, cubic stiffness coefficient, quintic stiffness coefficient, and fractional differential term coefficient take different values. The fork bifurcation and saddle–node bifurcation caused by the change in damping coefficient and fractional differential term coefficient under different parameters are studied.

Abstract:The research on the stability theory of fractional order nonlinear system has an important value for the application of synchronization and the control of fractional order chaotic system. The discussion that the stability discrimination of fractional order nonlinear system is converted into that of corresponding integer order nonlinear system has an important significance. In this paper, through the examples, for time-varying coefficient matrix, we point out the existing mistake of the discrimination theorem that states that if the integer system is stable, then its corresponding fractional system with order less than one is also stable. We also analyze the causes of the mistake.

Abstract:This paper discusses the stability issues of fractional -order nonlinear scalar systems by using the distributed-order operators and the order sensitivity method. A positivity check method is proposed by the use of initialized fractional calculus. By doing so, the fractional-order system is converted to a corresponding distributed-order one, and a group of Lyapunov function candidates of the distributed-order system are derived from the Volterra integral equations. Particularly, it is proved that the stability conditions of fractional-order and integer-order nonlinear systems are consistent with each other, which is the main contribution of this paper, and it also provides a way to the stability analysis of distributed-order nonlinear systems. Several examples are illustrated to validate the above conclusions.

Abstract:The van der Pol–Duffing oscillator equipped with fractional time delay feedback is investigated, with emphasis on in-depth stability analysis of equilibrium. An analytical stability criterion is deduced, based on which the parameter space of the feedback gain coefficient and the fractional order is split into time-delay-dependent and -independent regions. In the time-delay-dependent region, it appears that the equilibrium may experience stability losing or gaining repeatedly, named as a stability switch. Moreover, the critical time delay for stability switch happening is determined semi-analytically. An interesting finding consists in a series of alternate stability switches as the fractional order is fixed in a certain range. It implies the fractional time delay feedback would be potentially applicable to design flexible and efficient controllers to suppress or actuate certain motions of nonlinear dynamical systems.

Abstract:This article investigates a class of Duffing nonlinear dynamic systems with fractional-order dry friction and conducts in-depth research on the stability, chaotic characteristics, and erosion of the safety basin of this system; the results are verified through numerical simulation. First, the average method is used to approximate the amplitude-frequency relationship of the system, and the accuracy of the analytical results is verified through numerical experiments. Second, the Melnikov method is used to obtain the conditions for the system to enter chaos in the Smale horseshoe sense, and the Melnikov curve is drawn for further verification. Then, bifurcation diagrams are drawn for the changes in various parameters in the system, with a focus on analyzing the influence of friction factors on chaotic bifurcation. By applying the definition and calculation principle of the maximum Lyapunov exponent, and drawing and utilizing the maximum Lyapunov exponent graph, the chaotic state that the system enters under different parameters is more clearly defined. Finally, the evolution law of the safety basin under various parameter changes, especially dry friction changes, is analyzed, and the erosion and bifurcation mechanism of the safety basin is studied. Comparing with the bifurcation diagram, it reveals that chaos primarily contributes to the erosion of the safety basin.
Stability of A Linear Oscillator with Damping Force of the Fractional-Order Derivative

Abstract:It begins with the study of damping representation of a linear vibration system of single degree of freedom (SDOF), from the view point of fractional calculus. By using the idea of stability switch, it shows that the linear term involving the fractional-order derivative of an order between 0 and 2 always acts as a damping force, so that the unique equilibrium is asymptotically stable. Further, based on the idea of stability switch again, the paper proposes a scheme for determining the stable gain region of a linear vibration system under a fractional-order control. It shows that unlike the classical velocity feedback which can adjust the damping force only, a fractional-order feedback can adjust not only the damping force, but also the elastic restoring force, and in addition, a fractional-order PD α control can either enlarge the stable gain region or narrow the stable gain region. For the dynamic systems described by integer-order derivatives, the asymptotical stability of an equilibrium is guaranteed if all characteristic roots stay in the open left half-plane, while for the systems with fractional-order derivatives, the asymptotical stability of an equilibrium is guaranteed if all characteristic roots stay within a sector in the complex plane. Analysis shows that the proposed method, based on the idea of stability switch, works effectively in the stability analysis of dynamical systems with fractional-order derivatives.
