Abstract:Asteroseismology has grown from its beginnings three decades ago to a mature field teeming with discoveries and applications. This phenomenal growth has been enabled by space photometry with precision 10–100 times better than ground-based observations, with nearly continuous light curves for durations of weeks to years, and by large-scale ground-based surveys spanning years designed to detect all time-variable phenomena. The new high-precision data are full of surprises, deepening our understanding of the physics of stars. ▪ This review explores asteroseismic developments from the past decade primarily as a result of light curves from the Kepler and Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite space missions for massive upper main sequence OBAF stars, pre-main-sequence stars, peculiar stars, classical pulsators, white dwarfs and subdwarfs, and tidally interacting close binaries. ▪ The space missions have increased the numbers of pulsators in many classes by an order of magnitude. ▪ Asteroseismology measures fundamental stellar parameters and stellar interior physics—mass, radius, age, metallicity, luminosity, distance, magnetic fields, interior rotation, angular momentum transfer, convective overshoot, core-burning stage—supporting disparate fields such as galactic archeology, exoplanet host stars, supernovae progenitors, gamma-ray and gravitational wave precursors, close binary star origins and evolution, and standard candles. ▪ Stars are the luminous tracers of the Universe. Asteroseismology significantly improves models of stellar structure and evolution on which all inference from stars depends. Some recent results for the roAp stars

Abstract:Three topics are discussed: 1) Photometric observations of the rapidly oscillating Ap stars have shown that the pulsation amplitude drops dramatically as a function of wavelength from the blue to the red. A theoretical derivation, plus modelling, indicates that this is because the vertical wavelength of the pulsation mode is short compared to the scale height of the atmosphere; in fact, it indicates that we are seeing a pulsation node in the observable atmosphere. Radial velocity observations, and theoretical calculations now support this. The implication for other research on CP stars is that this can provide observational constraints on the atmospheric structure independent of traditional spectral analysis. 2) Luminosities of roAp stars can be determined from asteroseismology. A recent comparison of such asteroseismic luminosities with HIPPARCOS luminosities is shown. This suggests that roAp stars have lower temperatures and/or smaller radii than previous models have used, or that the magnetic fields in these stars alter the frequency separations. 3) The latest results of our long-term monitoring of the pulsation frequencies in certain roAp stars are discussed. There is a clear cyclic variability to the pulsation cavity, hence the sound speed and/or sound travel time (radius) of these stars. This might be indicative of magnetic cycles at a level that magnetic measurements cannot currently detect, although there is no theoretical support for such an idea.

Abstract:The success of helioseismology is due to its capability of measuring p-mode oscillations in the Sun. This allows us to extract informations on the internal structure and rotation of the Sun from the surface to the core. Similarly, asteroseismology is the study of the internal structure of the stars as derived from stellar oscillations. In this review we highlight the progress in the observational asteroseismology, including some basic theoretical aspects. In particular, we discuss our contributions to asteroseismology through the study of chemically peculiar stars under the "Nainital-Cape Survey" project being conducted at ARIES, Nainital since 1999. This survey aims to detect new rapidly-pulsating Ap (roAp) stars in the northern hemisphere. We also discuss the contribution of ARIES towards the asteroseismic study of the compact pulsating variables. We comment on the future prospects of our project in the light of the new optical 3.6-m telescope to be install at Devasthal (ARIES). Finally, we present a preliminary optical design of the high-speed imaging photometers for this telescope.

Abstract:Rotation matters for the life of a star. It causes a multitude of dynamical phenomena in the stellar interior during a star's evolution and its effects accumulate until the star dies. All stars rotate at some level but those born with a mass above about 1.3 times the mass of the Sun rotate rapidly during more than 90% of their nuclear lifetime. Internal rotation guides the angular momentum and chemical element transport throughout the stellar interior. These transport processes change over time as the star evolves. The cumulative effects of stellar rotation and its induced transport processes determine the helium content of the core by the time it exhausts its hydrogen isotopes. The amount of helium at that stage also guides the heavy element yields by the end of the star's life. A proper theory of stellar evolution and any realistic models for the chemical enrichment of galaxies, must be based on observational calibrations of stellar rotation and of the induced transport processes. Since a few years, asteroseismology offers such calibrations, for single and binary stars. We review the current status of asteroseismic modelling of rotating stars for different stellar mass regimes, in an accessible way for the non-expert. While doing so, we describe exciting opportunities sparked by asteroseismology for various domains in astrophysics, touching upon topics from exoplanetary science to galactic structure and evolution towards gravitational wave physics. Along the way, we provide ample sneak-previews for future 'industrialised' applications of asteroseismology to slow and rapid rotators, from exploitation of combined Kepler, TESS, PLATO, Gaia, and spectroscopy surveys. We end the review with a list of take away messages and achievements of asteroseismology, which are of relevance for many fields of astrophysics.

Asteroseismology of high-mass stars: new insights of stellar interiors with space telescopes

Abstract:Massive stars are important metal factories in the Universe. They have short and energetic lives, and many of them inevitably explode as a supernova and become a neutron star or black hole. In turn, the formation, evolution and explosive deaths of massive stars impact the surrounding interstellar medium and shape the evolution of their host galaxies. Yet the chemical and dynamical evolution of a massive star, including the chemical yield of the ultimate supernova and the remnant mass of the compact object, strongly depend on the interior physics of the progenitor star. We currently lack empirically calibrated prescriptions for various physical processes at work within massive stars, but this is now being remedied by asteroseismology. The study of stellar structure and evolution using stellar oscillations - asteroseismology - has undergone a revolution in the last two decades thanks to high-precision time series photometry from space telescopes. In particular, the long-term light curves provided by the MOST, CoRoT, BRITE, Kepler/K2 and TESS missions provided invaluable data sets in terms of photometric precision, duration and frequency resolution to successfully apply asteroseismology to massive stars and probe their interior physics. The observation and subsequent modelling of stellar pulsations in massive stars has revealed key missing ingredients in stellar structure and evolution models of these stars. Thus asteroseismology has opened a new window into calibrating stellar physics within a highly degenerate part of the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram. In this review, I provide a historical overview of the progress made using ground-based and early space missions, and discuss more recent advances and breakthroughs in our understanding of massive star interiors by means of asteroseismology with modern space telescopes.

Towards the undestanding of radial velocity pulsation in roAp stars

Abstract:High-resolution spectroscopic time series of rapidly oscillating Ap stars show evidence for a co-existence of standing and running waves in their atmospheric layers. With the purpose of understanding these observations we have carried out a theoretical analysis of the pulsations in the outermost layers of these stars, starting from the simplest possible model that still retains all important physical ingredients. In our analysis we considered an isothermal atmosphere in a plane-parallel approximation. Moreover we assumed that in the region considered the magnetic pressure is much larger than the gas pressure and, consequently, that the magnetoacoustic wave has decoupled into its acoustic and magnetic components. Using the analytical solutions for the velocity components appropriate to this model we estimate the velocity component parallel to the line of sight averaged over the visible stellar disk. Fitting the latter to a function of the form Acos($\sigma$t+phase), with $\sigma$ the dimensionless oscillation frequency and t the dimensionless time, we derive the amplitude A and the phase for our model as function of height in the atmosphere.

Abstract:Compact stars have been perceived as natural laboratories of matter at an extremely high density. The uncertainties of the equation of state (EOS) of matter can be constrained by observing compact stars. In this review, we investigate the EOSs, global structure, and elastic properties of compact stars. We focus in detail on how to constrain the above properties of compact stars via asteroseismology. Observations that include studies of quasi-periodic oscillations from giant flares of soft gamma-ray repeaters and gravitational waves provide information about the elastic properties and internal compositions of compact stars.

Pulsation in the atmosphere of roAp stars

Abstract:High time resolution spectroscopy of roAp stars at large telescopes has led to a major breakthrough in our understanding of magnetoacoustic pulsations in these interesting objects. New observations have allowed to uncover a number of intricate relations between stellar oscillations, magnetic field, and chemical inhomogeneities. It is now understood that unusual pulsational characteristics of roAp stars arise from an interplay between short vertical length of pulsation waves and extreme chemical stratification. Here I review results of recent studies which utilize these unique properties to map 3D pulsation geometry using a combination of Doppler imaging, vertical pulsation tomography, interpretation of line profile variation, and ultraprecise space photometry. I also describe recent attempts to interpret theoretically the complex observational picture of roAp pulsations.

Making waves in massive star asteroseismology

Abstract:Massive stars play a major role not only in stellar evolution but also galactic evolution theory. This is because of their dynamical interaction with binary companions, and because their strong winds and explosive deaths as supernovae provide chemical, radiative and kinematic feedback to their environments. Yet this feedback strongly depends on the physics of the supernova progenitor star. It is only in recent decades that asteroseismology - the study of stellar pulsations - has developed the necessary tools to a high level of sophistication to become a prime method at the forefront of astronomical research for constraining the physical processes at work within stellar interiors. For example, precise and accurate asteroseismic constraints on interior rotation, magnetic field strength and geometry, mixing and angular momentum transport processes of massive stars are becoming increasingly available across a wide range of masses. Moreover, ongoing large-scale time-series photometric surveys with space telescopes have revealed a large diversity in the variability of massive stars, including widespread coherent pulsations across a large range in mass and age, and the discovery of ubiquitous stochastic low-frequency (SLF) variability in their light curves. In this invited review, I discuss the progress made in understanding the physical processes at work within massive star interiors thanks to modern asteroseismic techniques, and conclude with a future outlook.

Abstract:We present the results of a systematic search of the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) 2-min cadence data for new rapidly oscillating Ap (roAp) stars observed during the Cycle 2 phase of its mission. We find seven new roAp stars previously unreported as such and present the analysis of a further 25 roAp stars that are already known. Three of the new stars show multiperiodic pulsations, while all new members are rotationally variable stars, leading to almost 70 per cent (22) of the roAp stars presented being $\alpha^2$ CVn-type variable stars. We show that targeted observations of known chemically peculiar stars are likely to overlook many new roAp stars, and demonstrate that multi-epoch observations are necessary to see pulsational behaviour changes. We find a lack of roAp stars close to the blue edge of the theoretical roAp instability strip, and reaffirm that mode instability is observed more frequently with precise, space-based observations. In addition to the Cycle 2 observations, we analyse TESS data for all known roAp stars. This amounts to 18 further roAp stars observed by TESS. Finally, we list six known roAp stars that TESS is yet to observe. We deduce that the incidence of roAp stars amongst the Ap star population is just 5.5 per cent, raising fundamental questions about the conditions required to excite pulsations in Ap stars. This work, coupled with our previous work on roAp stars in Cycle 1 observations, presents the most comprehensive, homogeneous study of the roAp stars in the TESS nominal mission, with a collection of 112 confirmed roAp stars in total.

Rapidly-oscillating {\it TESS} A--F main sequence stars: are the roAp stars a distinct class?

Abstract:From sector 1--44 {\em TESS} observations, 19 new roAp stars, 103 ostensibly non-peculiar stars with roAp-like frequencies and 617 $\delta$~Scuti stars with independent frequencies typical of roAp stars were found. Examination of all chemically peculiar stars observed by {\em TESS} resulted in the discovery of 199 Ap stars which pulsate as $\delta$~Sct or $\gamma$~Dor variables. The fraction of pulsating Ap stars is the same as the fraction of pulsating chemically normal stars. There is no distinct separation in frequency or radial order between chemically peculiar $\delta$~Sct stars and roAp stars. In fact, all the features which originally distinguished roAp from $\delta$~Sct stars in the past have disappeared. There is no reason to assume that the high frequencies in roAp stars are driven by a different mechanism from the high frequencies in chemically normal stars. However, chemically peculiar stars are far more likely to pulsate with high frequencies. The term "roAp" should be dropped: all roAp stars are normal $\delta$~Scuti stars.

Abstract:Small cyclic variations in the frequencies of acoustic modes are expected to be a common phenomenon in solar-like pulsators, as a result of stellar magnetic activity cycles. The frequency variations observed throughout the solar and stellar cycles contain information about structural changes that take place inside the stars as well as about variations in magnetic field structure and intensity. The task of inferring and disentangling that information is, however, not a trivial one. In the sun and solar-like pulsators, the direct effect of the magnetic field on the oscillations might be significantly important in regions of strong magnetic field (such as solar- / stellar-spots), where the Lorentz force can be comparable to the gas-pressure gradient. Our aim is to determine the sun- / stellar-spots effect on the oscillation frequencies and attempt to understand if this effect contributes strongly to the frequency changes observed along the magnetic cycle. The total contribution of the spots to the frequency shifts results from a combination of direct and indirect effects of the magnetic field on the oscillations. In this first work we considered only the indirect effect associated with changes in the stratification within the starspot. Based on the solution of the wave equation and the variational principle we estimated the impact of these stratification changes on the oscillation frequencies of global modes in the sun and found that the induced frequency shifts are about two orders of magnitude smaller than the frequency shifts observed over the solar cycle.

Abstract:Asteroseismology is the only observational tool in astronomy that can probe the interiors of stars, and is a benchmark method for deriving fundamental properties of stars and exoplanets. Over the coming decade, space-based and ground-based observations will provide a several order of magnitude increase of solar-like oscillators, as well as a dramatic increase in the number and quality of classical pulsator observations, providing unprecedented possibilities to study stellar physics and galactic stellar populations. In this white paper, we describe key science questions and necessary facilities to continue the asteroseismology revolution into the 2020's.

Super-slowly rotating Ap (ssrAp) stars: Spectroscopic study

Abstract:The fact that the rotation periods of Ap stars span five to six orders of magnitude and that the longest ones reach several hundred years represents one of the main unsolved challenges of stellar physics. Our goal is to gain better understanding of the occurrence and properties of the longest period Ap stars. We obtained high resolution spectra of a sample of super-slowly rotating Ap (ssrAp) star candidates identified by a TESS photometric survey to confirm that they are indeed Ap stars, to check that their projected equatorial velocities are compatible with super-slow rotation, and to obtain a first estimate of their magnetic field strengths. For the confirmed Ap stars, we determined whenever possible their mean magnetic field modulus, their mean quadratic magnetic field, and an upper limit of their projected equatorial velocities. Eighteen of the 27 stars studied are typical Ap stars; most of the other nine appear to be misclassified. One of the Ap stars is not a slow rotator; it must be seen nearly pole-on. The properties of the remaining 17 are compatible with moderately to extremely long rotation periods. Eight new stars with resolved magnetically split lines in the visible range were discovered; their mean magnetic field modulus and their mean quadratic magnetic field were measured. The mean quadratic field could also be determined in five more stars. Five spectroscopic binaries containing an Ap star, which were not previously known, were identified. Among the misclassified stars, one double-lined spectroscopic binary with two similar, sharp-lined Am components was also discovered. The technique that we used to carry out a search for ssrAp star candidates using TESS data is validated. Its main limitation appears to arise from uncertainties in the spectral classification of Ap stars. The new magnetic field measurements obtained as part of this study lend further support to the tentative conclusions of our previous studies: the absence of periods $ in stars with $B_0 the lower rate of occurrence of super-slow rotation for field strengths $B_0 than in the range kG B_0 and the deficiency of slowly rotating Ap stars with (phase-averaged) field strengths between sim 2 and sim 3\,kG.

Abstract:Asteroseismology is a powerful tool to infer fundamental stellar properties. The use of these asteroseismic-inferred properties in a growing number of astrophysical contexts makes it vital to understand their accuracy. Consequently, we performed a hare-and-hounds exercise where the hares simulated data for 6 artificial main-sequence stars and the hounds inferred their properties based on different inference procedures. To mimic a pipeline such as that planned for the PLATO mission, all hounds used the same model grid. Some stars were simulated using the physics adopted in the grid, others a different one. The maximum relative differences found (in absolute value) between the inferred and true values of the mass, radius, and age were 4.32 per cent, 1.33 per cent, and 11.25 per cent, respectively. The largest systematic differences in radius and age were found for a star simulated assuming gravitational settling, not accounted for in the model grid, with biases of -0.88 per cent (radius) and 8.66 per cent (age). For the mass, the most significant bias (-3.16 per cent) was found for a star with a helium enrichment ratio outside the grid range. Moreover, a ~7 per cent dispersion in age was found when adopting different prescriptions for the surface corrections or shifting the classical observations by $\pm 1\sigma$. The choice of the relative weight given to the classical and seismic constraints also impacted significantly the accuracy and precision of the results. Interestingly, only a few frequencies were required to achieve accurate results on the mass and radius. For the age the same was true when at least one $l=2$ mode was considered.

Observations of pulsations in roAp stars

Abstract:I review recent results of the observations of magnetoacoustic p-mode oscillations in roAp stars with the focus on time-resolved spectroscopic studies. Time-series spectroscopy of roAp stars reveals unexpected and diverse pulsational behaviour in the spectral lines of different chemical elements. These unique pulsational characteristics arise from an interplay between short vertical length of pulsation waves and extreme chemical stratification in the atmospheres of peculiar stars. This enables a tomographic reconstruction of the depth-dependence of chemical composition and pulsation wave properties. Combination of magnetoacoustic tomography with the Doppler imaging of the horizontal non-radial pulsation pattern opens possibility for an unprecedented three-dimensional mapping of roAp atmospheres.

Abstract:A better understanding and description of the stellar core overshooting process would constitute a significant step toward a more precise determination of stellar ages. S-Scuti stars are considered to be a promising source of information on this crucial hydrodynamical process. The investigation of their pulsational behaviour within the instability strip has motivated several surveys and statistical studies during the last decades. In particular, several attempts were made to establish clear correlations between the observed amplitudes of pulsation and other parameters characterizing the stars, like the absolute magnitude or the mean period.Here we discuss how this kind of studies can take advantage of recent works on delta -Scuti stars in open clusters and proposed methods to better take into account the effect of fast rotation. An illustration is given with stars belonging to the Praesepe Cluster.
Long-period Ap stars discovered with TESS data: Cycles 3 and 4

Abstract:One of the most challenging aspects of the Ap stars is the extreme differentiation of their rotation periods, which span more than five orders of magnitude. The physical origin of this differentiation remains poorly understood. The consideration of the most slowly rotating Ap stars represents a promising approach to gain insight into the processes responsible for the rotational braking to which the Ap stars are subject. However, historically, the study of these stars focused primarily on the most strongly magnetic among them. This bias introduced an ambiguity in the conclusions that could be drawn, as it did not allow the distinction between the rotational and magnetic effects, nor the investigation of possible correlations between rotational and magnetic properties. We previously showed that the identification of super-slowly rotating Ap (ssrAp) star candidates (defined as Ap stars that have rotation periods $ through systematic exploitation of the available TESS photometric observations of Ap stars is an effective approach to build a sample devoid of magnetic bias. This approach rests on the presence of brightness spots on the surface of Ap stars that are not distributed symmetrically about their rotation axes and show long-term stability, hence are responsible for photometric variations with the stellar rotation period. In our previous analyses of TESS Cycle 1 and Cycle 2 data, we interpreted the Ap stars showing no such variability over the 27-d duration of a TESS sector as being ssrAp star candidates. Here, we applied the same approach to TESS Cycle 3 and Cycle 4 observations of Ap stars. We show, however, that two issues that had not been fully appreciated until now may lead to spurious identification of ssrAp star candidates. On the one hand, a considerable fraction of the Ap stars in the existing lists turn out to have erroneous or dubious spectral classifications. On the other hand, the TESS data processing may remove part of the variability signal, especially for stars with moderately long periods ($20\ d After critical evaluation of these effects, we report the identification of 25 new ssrAp star candidates and of eight stars with moderately long periods. Combining this list with the lists of ssrAp stars from Cycles 1 and 2 and with the list of ssrAp stars that were previously known but whose lack of variability was not detected in our study, we confirmed at a higher significance level the conclusions drawn in our earlier work. These include the lower rate of occurrence of super-slow rotation among weakly magnetic Ap stars than among strongly magnetic ones, the probable existence of a gap between sim 2 and sim 3\,kG in the distribution of the magnetic field strengths of the ssrAp stars, and the much higher rate of occurrence of rapid oscillations in ssrAp stars than in the whole population of Ap stars. The next step to gain further understanding of the ssrAp stars will be to obtain high-resolution spectra of those for which such observations have not been made yet, to constrain their rotation velocities and their magnetic fields.
