Abstract:I want to write about what I know and remember about the activities of Leonid Vital'evich Kantorovich, an outstanding scientist of the 20th century; about his dramatic struggle for recognition of his mathematical economic theories; about the initial stage of the history of linear programming; about beautuful Kantorovich metric, about the creation of a new area of mathematical activity related to economic applications, which is called sometimes operation research, sometimes mathematical economics, sometimes linear and convex programming, or economic cybernetics, etc.; about its place in the modern mathematical landscape; and, finally, about several personal impressions of this distinguished scientist. The notes in no way pretend to exhaust these topics.

Abstract:We study Kantorovich type optimal transportation problems with nonlinear cost functions, including dependence on conditional measures of transport plans. A range of nonlinear Kantorovich problems for cost functions of a special form is considered and results on existence (or non-existence) of optimal solutions are proved. We also establish the connection between the nonlinear Kantorovich problem with the cost function of some special form and the Monge problem with convex dominance.

Abstract:Publisher This chapter discusses the linear programming. The linear programming problems involve the optimization of a linear function, called the “objective function,” subject to linear constraints, which may be either equalities or inequalities. The chapter discusses the new methods for solving linear programs problems and providing a development of the simplex method and the basic theory of linear programming. The geometry of linear programming models is presented and relevant geometrical concepts are algebraically characterized. The simplex method from a geometric point of view is developed. This development produces, as a by-product, various basic theorems concerning conditions for optimality and unboundedness, and leads in a natural way to the revised version of the simplex method. Duality theory and sensitivity analysis are also covered in the book. The chapter discusses the complexity of linear programming and two new methods—the ellipsoid method and Karmarkar's projective method. These are distinguished from the simplex method and have the desirable theoretical property of polynomial-time boundedness.

Abstract:This article focuses on numerical efficiency of projection algorithms for solving linear optimization problems. The theoretical foundation for this approach is provided by the basic result that bounded finite dimensional linear optimization problem can be solved by single projection operation on the feasible polyhedron. The further simplification transforms this problem into projection of a special point onto a convex polyhedral cone generated basically by inequalities of the original linear optimization problem.

Abstract:Unitary equivariance is a natural symmetry that occurs in many contexts in physics and mathematics. Optimization problems with such symmetry can often be formulated as semidefinite programs for a -dimensional matrix variable that commutes with , for all . Solving such problems naively can be prohibitively expensive even if is small but the local dimension d is large. We show that, under additional symmetry assumptions, this problem reduces to a linear program that can be solved in time that does not scale in d , and we provide a general framework to execute this reduction under different types of symmetries. The key ingredient of our method is a compact parametrization of the solution space by linear combinations of walled Brauer algebra diagrams. This parametrization requires the idempotents of a Gelfand–Tsetlin basis, which we obtain by adapting a general method inspired by the Okounkov–Vershik approach. To illustrate potential applications of our framework, we use several examples from quantum information: deciding the principal eigenvalue of a quantum state, quantum majority vote, asymmetric cloning and transformation of a black-box unitary. We also outline a possible route for extending our method to general unitary-equivariant semidefinite programs.

Abstract:We give an exact algorithm for the 0-1 Integer Linear Programming problem with a linear number of constraints that improves over exhaustive search by an exponential factor. Specifically, our algorithm runs in time $2^{(1-\text{poly}(1/c))n}$ where n is the number of variables and cn is the number of constraints. The key idea for the algorithm is a reduction to the Vector Domination problem and a new algorithm for that subproblem.

Abstract:Hermitian linear matrix pencils are ubiquitous in control theory, operator systems, semidefinite optimization, and real algebraic geometry. This survey reviews the fundamental features of the matricial solution set of a linear matrix inequality, the free spectrahedron, from the perspective of free real algebraic geometry. Namely, among matricial solution sets of noncommutative polynomial inequalities, free spectrahedra are precisely the convex ones. Furthermore, a procedure for detecting free spectrahedra and producing their representing linear matrix pencils is discussed. Finally, free spectrahedra admit a perfect Positivstellensatz, leading to a semidefinite programming formulation of eigenvalue optimization over convex matricial sets constrained by noncommutative polynomial inequalities.

Abstract:The paper is devoted to the study of the Kantorovich optimal transportation problem with nonlinear cost functional generated by a cost function depending on the conditional measures of the transport plan. The case of a cost function nonconvex in the second argument is considered. It is proved that this nonlinear Kantorovich problem with general cost function on a Souslin space can be reduced to the same problem with a convex cost function.

Abstract:Kantorovich operators are non-linear extensions of Markov operators and are omnipresent in several branches of mathematical analysis. The asymptotic behaviour of their iterates plays an important role even in classical ergodic, potential and probability theories, which are normally concerned with linear Markovian operators, semi-groups, and resolvents. The Kantorovich operators that appear implicitly in these cases, though non-linear, are all positively 1-homogenous. General Kantorovich operators amount to assigning "a cost" to most operations on measures and functions normally conducted "for free" in these classical settings. Motivated by extensions of the Monge-Kantorovich duality in mass transport, the stochastic counterpart of Aubry-Mather theory for Lagrangian systems, weak KAM theory à la Fathi-Mather, and ergodic optimization of dynamical systems, we study the asymptotic properties of general Kantorovich operators.

Abstract:We deal with linear programming problems involving absolute values in their formulations, so that they are no more expressible as standard linear programs. The presence of absolute values causes the problems to be nonconvex and nonsmooth, so hard to solve. In this paper, we study fundamental properties on the topology and the geometric shape of the solution set, and also conditions for convexity, connectedness, boundedness and integrality of the vertices. Further, we address various complexity issues, showing that many basic questions are NP-hard to solve. We show that the feasible set is a (nonconvex) polyhedral set and, more importantly, every nonconvex polyhedral set can be described by means of absolute value constraints. We also provide a necessary and sufficient condition when a KKT point of a nonconvex quadratic programming reformulation solves the original problem.

On Linear spaces of of matrices bounded rank

Abstract:Motivated by questions in theoretical computer science and quantum information theory, we study the classical problem of determining linear spaces of matrices of bounded rank. Spaces of bounded rank three were classified in 1983, and it has been a longstanding problem to classify spaces of bounded rank four. Before our study, no non-classical example of such a space was known. We exhibit two non-classical examples of such spaces and give the full classification of basic spaces of bounded rank four. There are exactly four such up to isomorphism. We also take steps to bring together the methods of the linear algebra community and the algebraic geometry community used to study spaces of bounded rank.

Abstract:Kantor pairs, (quadratic) Jordan pairs, and similar structures have been instrumental in the study of $\mathbb{Z}$-graded Lie algebras and algebraic groups. We introduce the notion of an operator Kantor pair, a generalization of Kantor pairs to arbitrary (commutative, unital) rings, similar in spirit as to how quadratic Jordan pairs and algebras generalize linear Jordan pairs and algebras. Such an operator Kantor pair is formed by a pair of $\Phi$-groups $(G^+,G^-)$ of a specific kind, equipped with certain homogeneous operators. For each such a pair $(G^+,G^-)$, we construct a $5$-graded Lie algebra $L$ together with actions of $G^\pm$ on $L$ as automorphisms. Moreover, we can associate a group $G(G^+,G^-) \subset \operatorname{Aut}(L)$ to this pair generalizing the projective elementary group of Jordan pairs. If the non-$0$-graded part of $L$ is projective, we can uniquely recover $G^+,G^-$ from $G(G^+,G^-)$ and the grading on $L$ alone. We establish, over rings $\Phi$ with $1/30 \in \Phi$, a one to one correspondence between Kantor pairs and operator Kantor pairs. Finally, we construct operator Kantor pairs for the different families of central simple structurable algebras.

The Subspace Flatness Conjecture and Faster Integer Programming

Abstract:In a seminal paper, Kannan and Lovász (1988) considered a quantity $\mu_{KL}(\Lambda,K)$ which denotes the best volume-based lower bound on the covering radius $\mu(\Lambda,K)$ of a convex body $K$ with respect to a lattice $\Lambda$. Kannan and Lovász proved that $\mu(\Lambda,K) \leq n \cdot \mu_{KL}(\Lambda,K)$ and the Subspace Flatness Conjecture by Dadush (2012) claims a $O(\log(2n))$ factor suffices, which would match the lower bound from the work of Kannan and Lovász. We settle this conjecture up to a constant in the exponent by proving that $\mu(\Lambda,K) \leq O(\log^{3}(2n)) \cdot \mu_{KL} (\Lambda,K)$. Our proof is based on the Reverse Minkowski Theorem due to Regev and Stephens-Davidowitz (2017). Following the work of Dadush (2012, 2019), we obtain a $(\log(2n))^{O(n)}$-time randomized algorithm to solve integer programs in $n$ variables. Another implication of our main result is a near-optimal flatness constant of $O(n \log^{3}(2n))$.

Abstract:For any linear transformation and two convex closed sets, we provide necessary and sufficient conditions for the transformation of the intersection of the sets to coincide with the intersection of their images. We also identify conditions for non-convex closed sets, continuous transformations, and multiple sets. We demonstrate the usefulness of our results via an application to the economics literature of mechanism design.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a Polish space, $\mathcal{P}(X)$ be the set of Borel probability measures on $X$, and $T\colon X\to X$ be a homeomorphism. We prove that for the simplex $\mathrm{Dom} \subseteq \mathcal{P}(X)$ of all $T$-invariant measures, the Kantorovich metric on $\mathrm{Dom}$ can be reconstructed from its values on the set of extreme points. This fact is closely related to the following result: the invariant optimal transportation plan is a mixture of invariant optimal transportation plans between extreme points of the simplex. The latter result can be generalized to the case of the Kantorovich problem with additional linear constraints and the class of ergodic decomposable simplexes.

Abstract:The classical Kantorovich-Rubinstein duality theorem establishes a significant connection between Monge optimal transport and the maximization of a linear form on the set of 1-Lipschitz functions. This result has been widely used in various research areas, in particular, to expose the bridge between Monge transport theory and a class of optimal design problems. The aim of this paper is to present a similar theory when the linear form is maximized over real $C^{1,1}$ functions whose Hessian is between minus and plus identity matrix. It turns out that this problem can be viewed as the dual of a specific optimal transport problem. The task is to find a minimal three-point plan with the fixed first two marginals, while the third one must be larger than the other two in the sense of convex order. The existence of optimal plans allows to express solutions of the underlying Beckmann problem as a combination of rank-one tensor measures supported by a graph. In the context of two-dimensional mechanics, this graph encodes the optimal configuration of a grillage that transfers a given load system.

Abstract:To study orthogonal arrays and signed orthogonal arrays, Ray-Chaudhuri and Singhi (1988 and 1994) considered some module spaces. Here, using a linear algebraic approach we define an inclusion matrix and find its rank. In the special case of Latin squares we show that there is a straightforward algorithm for generating a basis for this matrix using the so-called intercalates. We also extend this last idea.

Abstract:In this paper, we present various inequalities regarding the linear combinations of orthogonal projections. These results aim to generalize and refine well-known inequalities, such as those due to Buzano and Ostrowski. Additionally, we investigate a specific case of these linear combinations and introduce new refinements of the Cauchy–Schwarz inequality. Furthermore, we establish some findings related to the covariance and variance of bounded linear operators. Moreover, as applications of some of our results, we establish several inequalities involving the product of three operators, one of which is a linear combination of an orthogonal projection and the identity operator. Finally, we introduce a new positive operator construction in terms of an orthogonal projection and the identity operator, and we derive some norms and numerical radius inequalities involving it.

On the Uniqueness of Kantorovich Potentials

Abstract:Kantorovich potentials denote the dual solutions of the renowned optimal transportation problem. Uniqueness of these solutions is relevant from both a theoretical and an algorithmic point of view, and has recently emerged as a necessary condition for asymptotic results in the context of statistical and entropic optimal transport. In this work, we challenge the common perception that uniqueness in continuous settings is reliant on the connectedness of the support of at least one of the involved measures, and we provide mild sufficient conditions for uniqueness even when both measures have disconnected support. Since our main finding builds upon the uniqueness of Kantorovich potentials on connected components, we revisit the corresponding arguments and provide generalizations of well-known results. To this end, we introduce the notion of induced regularity and employ it to extend the regularity theory of Kantorovich potentials advanced by Gangbo and McCann (1996) to more general cost functions in $\mathbb{R}^d$ and to geodesic spaces.
