Theory of moiré magnetism in twisted bilayer $α$-RuCl$_3$

Abstract:Twisted heterostructures of van der Waals materials have received much attention for their many remarkable properties. Here, we present a comprehensive theory of the long-range ordered magnetic phases of twisted bilayer $\alpha$-RuCl$_3$ via a combination of first-principles calculations and atomistic simulations. While a monolayer exhibits zigzag antiferromagnetic order with three possible ordering wave vectors, a rich phase diagram is obtained for moiré superlattices as a function of interlayer exchange and twist angle. For large twist angles, each layer spontaneously picks a single zigzag ordering wave vector, whereas, for small twist angles, the ground state involves a combination of all three wave vectors in a complex hexagonal domain structure. This multi-domain order minimizes the interlayer energy while enduring the energy cost due to the domain wall formation. Our results indicate that magnetic frustration due to stacking-dependent interlayer exchange in moiré superlattices can be used to tune the magnetic ground state and enhance quantum fluctuations in $\alpha$-RuCl$_3$.

Abstract:Moiré superlattices in van der Waals structures can be used to control the electronic properties of the material and lead to emergent correlated and topological phenomena. Its first demonstration in van der Waals magnets exhibited noncollinear states and domain structures with, however, limited manipulation. Here we report electrically tunable moiré magnetism in twisted double bilayers - that is, a bilayer plus a bilayer with a twist angle between them - of layered antiferromagnet CrI3. Using magneto-optical Kerr effect microscopy, we observe the coexistence of antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic order with nonzero net magnetization - a hallmark of moiré magnetism. Such magnetic state extends over a wide range of twist angles (with transitions at around 0° and above 20°) and exhibits a nonmonotonic temperature dependence. We further demonstrate voltage-assisted magnetic switching. The observed nontrivial magnetic states and unprecedented control by twist angle, temperature and electrical gating are supported by the simulated phase diagram of the moiré magnetism.

Abstract:Moiré engineering 1 – 3 of van der Waals magnetic materials 4 – 9 can yield new magnetic ground states via competing interactions in moiré superlattices 10 – 13 . Theory predicts a suite of interesting phenomena, including multiflavour magnetic states 10 , non-collinear magnetic states 10 – 13 , moiré magnon bands and magnon networks 14 in twisted bilayer magnetic crystals, but so far such non-trivial magnetic ground states have not emerged experimentally. Here, by utilizing the stacking-dependent interlayer exchange interactions in two-dimensional magnetic materials 15 – 18 , we demonstrate a coexisting ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AF) ground state in small-twist-angle CrI 3 bilayers. The FM–AF state transitions to a collinear FM ground state above a critical twist angle of about 3°. The coexisting FM and AF domains result from a competition between the interlayer AF coupling, which emerges in the monoclinic stacking regions of the moiré superlattice, and the energy cost for forming FM–AF domain walls. Our observations are consistent with the emergence of a non-collinear magnetic ground state with FM and AF domains on the moiré length scale 10 – 13 . We further employ the doping dependence of the interlayer AF interaction to control the FM–AF state by electrically gating a bilayer sample. These experiments highlight the potential to create complex magnetic ground states in twisted bilayer magnetic crystals, and may find application in future gate-voltage-controllable high-density magnetic memory storage.

Abstract:Layered α-RuCl 3 is a promising material to potentially realize the long-sought Kitaev quantum spin liquid with fractionalized excitations. While evidence of this state has been reported under a modest in-plane magnetic field, such behaviour is largely inconsistent with theoretical expectations of spin liquid phases emerging only in out-of-plane fields. These predicted field-induced states have been largely out of reach due to the strong easy-plane anisotropy of bulk crystals, however. We use a combination of tunnelling spectroscopy, magnetotransport, electron diffraction and ab initio calculations to study the layer-dependent magnons, magnetic anisotropy, structure and exchange coupling in atomically thin samples. Due to picoscale distortions, the sign of the average off-diagonal exchange changes in monolayer α-RuCl 3 , leading to a reversal of spin anisotropy to easy-axis anisotropy, while the Kitaev interaction is concomitantly enhanced. Our work opens the door to the possible exploration of Kitaev physics in the true two-dimensional limit.

Abstract:Various noncollinear spin textures and magnetic phases have been predicted in twisted two-dimensional CrI$_3$ due to competing ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AFM) interlayer exchange from moiré stacking - with potential spintronic applications even when the underlying material possesses a negligible Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya or dipole-dipole interaction. Recent measurements have shown evidence of coexisting FM and AFM layer order in small-twist-angle CrI$_3$ bilayers and double bilayers. Yet, the nature of the magnetic textures remains unresolved and possibilities for their manipulation and electrical readout are unexplored. Here, we use tunneling magnetoresistance to investigate the collective spin states of twisted double-bilayer CrI$_3$ under both out-of-plane and in-plane magnetic fields together with detailed micromagnetic simulations of domain dynamics based on magnetic circular dichroism. Our results capture hysteretic and anisotropic field evolutions of the magnetic states and we further uncover two distinct non-volatile spin textures (out-of-plane and in-plane domains) at $\approx$ 1° twist angle, with a different global tunneling resistance that can be switched by magnetic field.

Abstract:Recent developments in twisted and lattice-mismatched bilayers have revealed a rich phase space of van der Waals systems and generated excitement. Among these systems are heterobilayers which can offer new opportunities to control van der Waals systems with strong in plane correlations such as spin-orbit-assisted Mott insulator $\alpha$-RuCl$_3$. Nevertheless, a theoretical $\textit{ab initio}$ framework for mismatched heterobilayers without even approximate periodicity is sorely lacking. We propose a general strategy for calculating electronic properties of such systems, mismatched interface theory (MINT), and apply it to the graphene/$\alpha$-RuCl$_{3}$ (GR/$\alpha$-RuCl$_{3}$) heterostructure. Using MINT, we predict uniform doping of 4.77$\%$ from graphene to $\alpha$-RuCl$_3$ and magnetic interactions in $\alpha$-RuCl$_3$ to shift the system toward the Kitaev point. Hence we demonstrate that MINT can guide targeted materialization of desired model systems and discuss recent experiments on GR/$\alpha$-RuCl$_{3}$ heterostructures.

Abstract:Twist engineering of van der Waals magnets has emerged as an outstanding platform for manipulating exotic magnetic states. However, the complicated form of spin interactions in the large moiré superlattice obstructs a concrete understanding of such spin systems. To tackle this problem, for the first time, we developed a generic ab initio spin Hamiltonian for twisted bilayer magnets. Our atomistic model reveals that strong AB sublattice symmetry breaking due to the twist introduces a promising route to realize the novel noncentrosymmetric magnetism. Several unprecedented features and phases are uncovered including the peculiar domain structure and skyrmion phase induced by noncentrosymmetricity. The diagram of those distinctive magnetic phases has been constructed, and the detailed nature of their transitions analyzed. Further, we established the topological band theory of moiré magnons relevant to each of these phases. By respecting the full lattice structure, our theory provides the characteristic features that can be detected in experiments.

Abstract:Interfaces between twisted 2D materials host a wealth of physical phenomena originating from the long-scale periodicity associated with the resulting moire structure. Besides twisting, an alternative route to create structures with comparably long or even longer periodicities is inducing a differential strain between adjacent layers in a van der Waals (vdW) material. Despite recent theoretical efforts analyzing its benefits, this route has not yet been implemented experimentally. Here we report evidence for the simultaneous presence of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic regions in CrBr3 _a hallmark of moire magnetism_ from the observation of an unexpected magnetoconductance in CrBr3 tunnel barriers with ferromagnetic Fe3GeTe2 and graphene electrodes. The observed magnetoconductance evolves with temperature and magnetic field as the magnetoconductance measured in small angle CrBr3 twisted junctions, in which moire magnetism occurs. Consistent with Raman measurements and theoretical modeling, we attribute the phenomenon to the presence of a differential strain in the CrBr3 multilayer, which locally modifies the stacking and the interlayer exchange between adjacent CrBr3 layers, resulting in spatially modulated spin textures. Our conclusions indicate that inducing differential strain in vdW multilayers is a viable strategy to create moire-like superlattices, which in the future may offer in-situ continuous tunability even at low temperatures.

Activating magnetoelectric optical properties by twisting antiferromagnetic bilayers

Abstract:Twisting in bilayers introduces structural chirality with two enantiomers, i.e., left- and right-hand bilayers, depending on the oriented twist angle. The interplay between this global chirality and additional degrees of freedom, such as magnetic ordering and the local octahedral chirality arising from the geometry of the bonds, can yield striking phenomena. In this work, we focus on collinear antiferromagnetic CrI$_3$ twisted homo-bilayers, which are characterized by a staggered octahedral chirality in each monolayer. Using symmetry analysis, density functional theory and tight-binding model calculations we show that layers twisting can lower the structural and magnetic point-group symmetries, thus activating pyroelectricity and the magneto-optical Kerr effect, which would otherwise be absent in untwisted antiferromagnetic homo-bilayers. Interestingly, both electric polarization and Kerr angle are controllable by the twist angle and their sign is reversed when switching from left- to right-twisted bilayers. We further unveil the occurrence of unconventional vortices with spin textures that alternate opposite chiralities in momentum space. These findings demonstrate that the interplay between twisting and octahedral chirality in magnetic bilayers and related van der Waals heterostructures represents an extraordinary resource for tailoring their physical properties for spintronic and optoelectronic applications.
