Abstract:In this short paper, we point out that a single local stability controller can pin the complex network to a specified solution (or its equilibrium) of the coupled complex network. A rigorous mathematical proof is given, too.

Abstract:The local stochastic stability of complex networks under pinning control is studied, with stochastic perturbations to the coupling strengths. The nodes of complex network are modeled as second-order differential equations subject to stochastic parametric excitations. The complex network is first linearized at its trivial solution, and the resulting equations are reduced to independent subsystems by using a suitable linear transformation. Then the condition of the stochastic stability can be determined by Lyapunov exponents of the subsystems. The largest Lyapunov exponent of the subsystem can be expressed analytically, as a function of the eigenvalue of a matrix associated with the coupling matrix and pinning control matrix for a given system of parameters. And the stability region with respect to the eigenvalue can be obtained. It is pointed out that the local stochastic stability of the network is finally determined by the maximal and minimum eigenvalues of the matrix. Numerical results with positive and negative damping coefficients are given to illustrate the criterion. Moreover, for the positive damping coefficient case, the pinning control may destabilize the network; and for the negative damping coefficient case, the pinning control may stabilize the network.

Abstract:In this paper, without assuming symmetry, irreducibility, or linearity of the couplings, we prove that a single controller can pin a coupled complex network to a homogenous solution. Sufficient conditions are presented to guarantee the convergence of the pinning process-locally and globally. An effective approach to adapt the coupling strength is proposed. Several numerical simulations are given to verify our theoretical analysis.

Abstract:Based on the tool of V-Stability, the stability analysis of the controlled network is derived in terms of linear matrix inequality. Then the large scale network is divided into some small communities via a fast division algorithm. The aggregation network is stabilized by stabilizing every community with pinning control strategy. As an illustrative example, a network with 400 nodes is simulated to verify the effectiveness and convenience with the selective pinning control strategy.

Abstract:A sufficient condition for the stability of uncertain complex networks is derived in terms of linear matrix inequalities based on the V-stability tool, which associates the self-dynamics of nodes with passivity degrees. Then, a pinning control strategy is proposed on the developed condition to stabilize the uncertain complex networks to a homogenous orbit. As an illustrative example, a network with the Lorenz system as node self-dynamics is simulated to verify the analytic results.

Abstract:In pinning control of complex networks, a tacit believing is that the system dynamics will be better controlled by pinning the large-degree nodes than the small-degree ones. Here, by changing the number of pinned nodes, we find that, when a significant fraction of the network nodes are pinned, pinning the small-degree nodes could generally have a higher performance than pinning the large-degree nodes. We demonstrate this interesting phenomenon on a variety of complex networks, and analyze the underlying mechanisms by the model of star networks. By changing the network properties, we also find that, comparing to densely connected homogeneous networks, the advantage of the small-degree pinning strategy is more distinct in sparsely connected heterogenous networks.

The renormalization process consists of two operations, edge weighting and node reduction, and is built on a new concept of passivity comparison in the sense of Lyapunov V-stability. Abstract:Number estimation of controllers is a fundamental question in pinning synchronization of complex networks. This paper studies the problem of controller number in synchronizing a complex network of coupled dynamical systems by means of pinning. For a complex network with a symmetric coupling matrix and full coupling between the nodes, we formulate network synchronization via pinning as a linear matrix inequality criterion, and provide a lower bound and an upper bound of the controller number for a given complex network with fixed architecture. Several numerical examples with Barabási-Albert network topologies are provided to verify our theoretical results.

Abstract:This paper introduces the concept of Lyapunov V-stability for complex dynamical networks. Under the new framework, each dynamical node is associated with a passivity degree, which indicates to what extent an effort is required for stabilizing the node. From this approach, the network stability problem is converted to measuring the negative definiteness of one simple matrix that characterizes the topology of the network. Pinning control is then suggested and investigated based on the new V-stability formulation. As an illustrative example, a network with different node dynamics and non-uniform coupling strengths is simulated to verify the analytic results. Moreover, a comparison study for three different kinds of networks is provided to further illustrate the novelty and efficacy of the proposed V-stability criterion and stabilization scheme.

Abstract:In this paper, we give a stability analysis of multi-agent system with a local pinning control algorithm for very general network topologies. These include determinately directed time varying topologies, the stochastically switching topologies. The pinned vertex set also varies with time, including deterministic and stochastic time-variations. We present sufficient conditions to guarantee the convergence of the pinning process: for the deterministic case, a time-varying pinned vertex set can stabilize the network of multi-agents with time-varying topologies if any vertex in the networks can be accessed by directed paths by at least one vertex in the pinned vertex set across all time intervals that are pre-defined; Similar results are also given for the stochastically switching case. As applications, numerical simulations based on the random waypoint model are given to verify our theoretical results.

Abstract:In this paper, we study pinning control problem of coupled dynamical systems with stochastically switching couplings and stochastically selected controller-node set. Here, the coupling matrices and the controller-node sets change with time, induced by a continuous-time Markovian chain. By constructing Lyapunov functions, we establish tractable sufficient conditions for exponentially stability of the coupled system. Two scenarios are considered here. First, we prove that if each subsystem in the switching system, i.e. with the fixed coupling, can be stabilized by the fixed pinning controller-node set, and in addition, the Markovian switching is sufficiently slow, then the time-varying dynamical system is stabilized. Second, in particular, for the problem of spatial pinning control of network with mobile agents, we conclude that if the system with the average coupling and pinning gains can be stabilized and the switching is sufficiently fast, the time-varying system is stabilized. Two numerical examples are provided to demonstrate the validity of these theoretical results, including a switching dynamical system between several stable sub-systems, and a dynamical system with mobile nodes and spatial pinning control towards the nodes when these nodes are being in a pre-designed region.

Abstract:This paper addresses the control problem of a class of complex dynamical networks with each node being a Lur'e system whose nonlinearity satisfies a sector condition, by applying local feedback injections to a small fraction of the nodes. The pinning control problem is reformulated in the framework of the absolute stability theory. It is shown that the global stability of the controlled network can be reduced to the test of a set of linear matrix inequalities, which in turn guarantee the absolute stability of the corresponding Lur'e systems whose dimensions are the same as that of a single node. A circle-type criterion in the frequency domain is further presented for checking the stability of the controlled network graphically. Finally, a network of Chua's oscillators is provided as a simulation example to illustrate the effectiveness of the theoretical results.

Abstract:In this paper, we discuss distributive synchronization of complex networks in finite time, with a single nonlinear pinning controller. The results apply to heterogeneous dynamic networks, too. Different from many models, which assume the coupling matrix being symmetric (or the connecting graph is undirected), here, the coupling matrix is asymmetric (or the connecting graph is directed).

Abstract:This Letter studies the robustness problem of pinning a general complex dynamical network toward an assigned synchronous evolution. Several synchronization criteria are presented to guarantee the convergence of the pinning process locally and globally by construction of Lyapunov functions. In particular, if a pinning strategy has been designed for synchronization of a given complex dynamical network, then no matter what uncertainties occur among the pinned nodes, synchronization can still be guaranteed through the pinning. The analytical results show that pinning control has a certain robustness against perturbations on network architecture: adding, deleting and changing the weights of edges. Numerical simulations illustrated by scale-free complex networks verify the theoretical results above-acquired.

Abstract:This paper concerns the global stability of controlling a complex network with digraph topology to a homogeneous trajectory of the uncoupled system by the local pinning control algorithm. The derived stability condition indicates that the smallest real part of eigenvalues of the Laplacian sub-matrix corresponding to the unpinned vertices can be used to measure the stabilizability of a digraph with a given pinned vertex set. A pinned vertex set can stabilize a directed network to some unstable trajectories, for instance, to a chaotic trajectory of the uncoupled systems, if and only if the pinned vertex set can access all other vertices in the digraph. Furthermore, in the bigraph case, the analytical estimation of the stabilizability’s lower bound suggests that an optimal pinning strategy should take not only the vertex degree, but also the shortest path between pairs of vertices into considerations.

Abstract:In this paper, the stabilization problem of the Boolean network (BN) with stochastic disturbances via pinning control has been investigated. The necessary and sufficient conditions are given for robust stabilization of a BN with stochastic disturbances. Then, pinning control is considered to stabilize a BN with stochastic disturbances. An algorithm is given to obtain a new stable system and the pinning control, including the pinned nodes, control design, and control adding, is also solved. Finding the minimal number of pinned nodes is further analyzed. The necessary and sufficient conditions are obtained for the solvability of pinning control, based on which some matrices sets are constructed which leads to the necessary and sufficient conditions of pinning t nodes. Furthermore, an algorithm is introduced to search the minimal number of pinned nodes and what exactly they are, which will reduce the computational burden. Examples are given to illustrate the efficiency of the obtained results.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with synchronizing complex networks with arbitrary topological structures via pinning control. The necessary and sufficient conditions are established for choosing the pinned nodes to guarantee the pinning synchronzability of the complex networks. Under the assumption of the sufficient large coupling strength, it is shown that the way to pin the nodes is a decisive factor in determining the pinning synchronizability of complex networks and the entire network can achieve an exponentially fast speed of synchronization.

Abstract:We study the stability of networks of multi-agent systems with local pinning strategies and two types of time delays, namely the transmission delay in the network and the pinning delay of the controllers. Sufficient conditions for stability are derived under specific scenarios by computing or estimating the dominant eigenvalue of the characteristic equation. In addition, controlling the network by pinning a single node is studied. Moreover, perturbation methods are employed to derive conditions in the limit of small and large pinning strengths.Numerical algorithms are proposed to verify stability, and simulation examples are presented to confirm the efficiency of analytic results.

Abstract:In this paper, the fixed-time pinning synchronization problem of an intermittently coupled complex network is investigated. An intermittently coupled complex network with delay is presented for the first time. A new fixed-time stability lemma is developed, which is less conservative than the existing results. A more economical controller is designed under intermittent pinning control strategy. Sufficient conditions are developed to realize fixed-time synchronization. Numerical simulations are conducted to verify the effectiveness and feasibility of the obtained results.
