Abstract:We update our earlier results regarding detection of $gg\to b\anti b h\to 4b$ ($h=h^0,H^0,A^0$) to incorporate the very high $b$-tagging efficiencies and purities that are now anticipated at the LHC. New results for the Tev$^*$ are given, and indicate substantial potential for these modes. The complementarity of the $H^0\to h^0h^0 \to 4b$ final state mode is illustrated for the LHC. The latest radiative corrections to the Higgs sector are incorporated.

Searching for $H \to hh \to b\bar bττ$ in the 2HDM Type-I at the LHC

Abstract:Unlike other realisations of the 2-Higgs Doublet Model (2HDM), the so-called Type-I allows for a very light Higgs boson spectrum. Specifically, herein, the heaviest of the two CP-even neutral Higgs states, $H$, can be the one discovered at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in 2012, with a mass of $\approx 125$ GeV and couplings consistent with those predicted by the Standard Model (SM). In such a condition of the model, referred to as `inverted mass hierarchy', the decay of the SM-like Higgs state into pairs of the lightest CP-even neutral Higgs boson, $h$, is possible, for masses of the latter ranging from $M_H/2\approx 65$ GeV down to 15 GeV or so, all compatible with experimental constraints. In this paper, we investigate the scope of the LHC in accessing the process $gg\to H \to hh\to b\bar b\tau\tau$ by performing a Monte Carlo (MC) analysis aimed at extracting this signal from the SM backgrounds, in presence of a dedicated trigger choice and kinematic selection. We prove that some sensitivity to such a channel exists already at Run 3 of the LHC while the High-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) will be able to either confirm or disprove this theoretical scenario over sizable regions of its parameter space.

Abstract:A search for a charged Higgs boson, $H^{\pm}$, produced in top-quark decays, $t \rightarrow H^{\pm}b$, is presented. The search targets $H^{\pm}$ decays into a bottom and a charm quark, $H^{\pm} \rightarrow cb$. The analysis focuses on a selection enriched in top-quark pair production, where one top quark decays into a leptonically decaying $W$ boson and a bottom quark, and the other top quark decays into a charged Higgs boson and a bottom quark. This topology leads to a lepton-plus-jets final state, characterised by an isolated electron or muon and at least four jets. The search exploits the high multiplicity of jets containing $b$-hadrons, and deploys a neural network classifier that uses the kinematic differences between the signal and the background. The search uses a dataset of proton-proton collisions collected at a centre-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV between 2015 and 2018 with the ATLAS detector at CERN's Large Hadron Collider, amounting to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb$^{-1}$. Observed (expected) 95% confidence-level upper limits between 0.15% (0.09%) and 0.42% (0.25%) are derived for the product of branching fractions $\mathscr{B}(t\rightarrow H^{\pm}b) \times \mathscr{B}(H^{\pm}\rightarrow cb)$ for charged Higgs boson masses between 60 and 160 GeV, assuming the SM production of the top-quark pairs.

Probing a 2HDM Type-I light Higgs state via $H_{\rm SM} \to hh \to b\bar bγγ$ at the LHC

Abstract:We study the discovery potential for a light Higgs boson via $gg \to H_{\text{SM-like}} \to hh \to b\bar{b}\gamma\gamma$ process at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Focusing on the 2-Higgs Doublet Model (2HDM) Type-I, which can accommodate light neutral Higgs states, of $\mathcal{O}(100)$ GeV or less in mass, while agreeing with theoretical and up-to-date experimental constraints, we explore the feasibility of a light CP-even Higgs state $h$ via the largely unexplored final state $b\bar{b}\gamma\gamma$ at Run-3 of the LHC. We further propose a few Benchmark Points (BPs) for future searches.

Discovering Extra Higgs Boson Via Pair Production of the SM-like Higgs Bosons

Abstract:In the standard model (SM), pair production rate of Higgs boson at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is quite low. One usually think that it is extremely important for the measurement of triple Higgs coupling at the high luminosity LHC. In this paper, we propose to search for the extra Higgs boson (denoted as $S$) utilizing pair production of the SM-like Higgs boson ($H$) which was discovered in July, 2012.The pair production of $H$ can be huge due to the resonant production of heavy scalar $S$, namely $PP \rightarrow S \rightarrow HH$. The couplings of $H$ with weak gauge boson are similar to ones in the SM and it implies that the couplings between $S$ and gauge bosons are likely suppressed. Provided that $S$ is heavy enough, the decay into weak gauge bosons may not be the dominant modes. Instead $S$ can decay into a pair of $H$ and offer the promising channel to discover it. In this paper, we studied the 5 promising decay modes of $H$, i.e. $b\bar{b}$, $WW^*$, $ZZ^*$, $\gamma\gamma$ and $\tau^+\tau^-$, and simulated the signals and backgrounds for the 15 combination modes for $HH$ at the LHC with $\sqrt{s}= 14$ TeV and integrated luminosity $\mathcal{L}=1000fb^{-1}$. We found that with the help of suitable selection rules, very good signal to background ratio $S/B$ can be archived in many decay channels, for example $b\bar b+ (WW^*, ZZ^*, \gamma\gamma, \tau^+\tau^-)$, $WW^*+(WW^*, ZZ^*, \gamma\gamma, \tau^+\tau^-)$ and $\tau^+\tau^- +(\gamma\gamma, \tau^+\tau^-)$. For the detailed results please refer to Table \ref{tab:discovery} in the text. On the contrary, $b\bar b b\bar b$ mode is less important due to the huge QCD background. However if one has excellent control on light jet mis-tagging, the $b\bar b b\bar b$ mode can be promising to discover the extra Higgs boson due to its the largest branching ratio compared to other modes.
Discovering a light charged Higgs boson via $W^{\pm *}$ + 4$b$ final states at the LHC

Abstract:Most of the current experimental searches for charged Higgs bosons at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) concentrate upon the $tb$ and $\tau\nu$ decay channels. In the present study, we analyze instead the feasibility of the bosonic decay channel $W^{\pm *} h$, with the charged gauge boson being off-shell and $h$ being a neutral light Higgs boson, which decays predominantly into $b\bar{b}$. We perform a Monte Carlo (MC) analysis for the associate production of a charged Higgs with such a light neutral one, $pp\to H^\pm h$, at the LHC followed by the aforementioned charged Higgs boson decay, which leads to a $W^{\pm *} +4b$ final state. The analysis is performed within the 2-Higgs Doublet Model (2HDM) with Yukawa texture of Type-I. We take into account all available experimental constraints from LEP, Tevatron and the LHC as well as the theoretical requirements of self-consistency of this scenario. In order to study the full process $pp \rightarrow H^{\pm} h \rightarrow W^{\pm *} h h \rightarrow \ell^\pm \nu+ 4b$ ($\ell=e,\mu$), we provide several Benchmark Points (BPs) amenable to further analysis, with $M_{H^\pm}+M_{b} < M_{t}$, for which we prove that there is a strong possibility that this spectacular signal could be found at the LHC with center of mass energy 14 TeV and luminosity 300 $\rm{fb}^{-1}$.

Hunting a charged Higgs boson pair in proton-proton collisions

Abstract:We explore the production and the possible detection of a charged scalar Higgs pair $H^-H^+$ decaying into a final state $\mu\nu_{\mu}cb$ in proton-proton collisions, i.e, $pp\to H^- H^+\to \mu\nu_{\mu} cb$. These charged scalars are predicted in the Two-Higgs Doublet Model of type III (2HDM-III), particularly we analyze masses of such a particle of the order of the top quark mass. The analysis is applied to the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and its next step, the High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC). As a test and validation of the model, we identify regions of the 2HDM-III parameter space that accommodate the current excess of events at $3\sigma$ in the process $\mathcal{BR}(t\to H^{\pm}b)\times \mathcal{BR}(H^{\pm}\to cb)$ for $M_{H^{\pm}}=130$ GeV reported by ATLAS collaboration. Additional experimental constraints are also included. Based on it, we propose realistic scenarios that could be brought to experimental scrutiny at the LHC and HL-LHC. Assuming the best scenario, we predict a signal significance of $5\sigma$ for the charged scalar boson mass $M_{H^{\pm}}$ in the $120-240$ GeV interval.

A New Avenue for Discovering Charged Higgs Bosons at the LHC

Abstract:We suggest searching for charged Higgs bosons via $c \bar b \to H^+ \to W^+ H \to \ell^+\nu t\bar c$ at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). In the general two Higgs doublet model (G2HDM) that possesses flavor changing neutral Higgs (FCNH) couplings, the process is induced by the FCNH top-charm coupling $\rho_{tc}$ without Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) suppression, and may occur if $m_{H^+} > m_{W^+} + m_H$, giving rise to the same sign dilepton signal. We perform a signal-to-background analysis at 14 TeV LHC and find that discovery might be possible with LHC Run 2 data already at hand.

Early Higgs Boson Discovery in Non-minimal Higgs Sectors

Abstract:Particle physics models with more than one Higgs boson occur in many frameworks for physics beyond the standard model, including supersymmetry, technicolor, composite Higgs, and "little Higgs" models. If the Higgs sector contains couplings stronger than electroweak gauge couplings, there will be heavy Higgs particles that decay to lighter Higgs particles plus heavy particles such as $W$, $Z$, and $t$. This motivates searches for final states involving multiple $W$, $Z$, $t$, and $\bar{b}b$ pairs. A two Higgs doublet model with custodial symmetry is a useful simplified model to describe many of these signals. The model can be parameterized by the physical Higgs masses and the mixing angles $\al$ and $\be$, so discovery or exclusion in this parameter space has a straightforward physical interpretation. We illustrate this with a detailed analysis of the process $gg \to A$ followed by $A \to h Z$ and $h \to WW$. For $m_{A} \simeq 330\GeV$, $m_{h} \simeq 200\GeV$ we can get a $4.5\si$ signal with 1 fb${}^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity at the Large Hadron Collider.

Abstract:In this study, we explore the potential to probe the process $gg \to H_{\text{SM-like}} \to hh \to b\bar{b}\tau\tau$ at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), within the framework of the Two Higgs Doublet Model (2HDM) Type-I. After performing a detailed Monte Carlo (MC) simulation, we focus on isolating the signal from the Standard Model (SM) backgrounds. Our analysis employs a dedicated trigger choice and optimised kinematic selection to improve the signal sensitivity. We demonstrate some sensitivity to this decay channel at Run 3, while the High-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) can provide discovery evidence.

Abstract:A search optimized for new heavy particles decaying to two $b$-quarks and produced in association with additional $b$-quarks is reported. The sensitivity is improved by $b$-tagging at least one lower-$p_{\rm{T}}$ jet in addition to the two highest-$p_{\rm{T}}$ jets. The data used in this search correspond to an integrated luminosity of 103 $\text{fb}^{-1}$ collected with a dedicated trijet trigger during the 2017 and 2018 $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV proton-proton collision runs with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The search looks for resonant peaks in the $b$-tagged dijet invariant mass spectrum over a smoothly falling background. The background is estimated with an innovative data-driven method based on orthonormal functions. The observed $b$-tagged dijet invariant mass spectrum is compatible with the background-only hypothesis. Upper limits at 95% confidence level on a heavy vector-boson production cross section times branching ratio to a pair of $b$-quarks are derived.

Abstract:We demonstrate that detection of the heavier minimal supersymmetric model CP-even Higgs boson $H^0$ will be possible at the LHC via its $H^0\to h^0h^0\to 4b$ and/or $H^0\to A^0A^0\to 4b$ decay channels for significant portions of the $( m_{A^0},\tan\beta)$ model parameter space. At low $ m_{A^0}$ ($\lsim 60\gev$), {\it both} the $H^0\to A^0A^0\to 4b$ and $H^0\to h^0h^0\to 4b$ modes yield a viable signal for most $\tan\beta$ values; viability for the $h^0h^0$ channel extends up to $\mhh\sim 2\mt$ when the model parameter $\tan\beta$ is not large. At the Tevatron, the $h^0h^0$ and $A^0A^0$ channels are both potentially viable at low $ m_{A^0}$ for sufficiently good $b$-tagging efficiency and purity.
Search for a charged Higgs boson in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 8 TeV

Abstract:A search for a charged Higgs boson is performed with a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 +/- 0.5 inverse femtobarns collected with the CMS detector in proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 8 TeV. The charged Higgs boson is searched for in top quark decays for m(H+/-) < m(t) - m(b), and in the direct production pp -> t (b) H+/- for m(H+/-) > m(t) - m(b). The H+/- -> tau+/- nu[tau] and H+/- -> t b decay modes in the final states tau[h]+jets, mu tau[h], l+jets, and ll' (l = e, mu) are considered in the search. No signal is observed and 95% confidence level upper limits are set on the charged Higgs boson production. A model-independent upper limit on the product branching fraction B( t -> H+/- b ) B( H+/- -> tau+/- nu[tau] )= 1.2-0.15% is obtained in the mass range m(H+/-) = 80-160 GeV, while the upper limit on the cross section times branching fraction sigma( pp -> t (b) H+/- ) B( H+/- -> tau+/- nu[tau] ) = 0.38-0.025 pb is set in the mass range m(H+/-) = 180-600 GeV. Here, cross section sigma( pp -> t (b) H+/- ) stands for the sum sigma( pp -> t-bar (b) H+ ) + sigma( pp -> t (b-bar) H- ). Assuming B( H+/- -> t b ) = 1, an upper limit on sigma ( pp -> t (b) H+/- ) of 2.0-0.13 pb is set for m(H+/-) = 180-600 GeV. The combination of all considered decay modes and final states is used to set exclusion limits in the m(H+/-)-tan(beta) parameter space in different MSSM benchmark scenarios.

Abstract:A search for a light charged Higgs boson produced in decays of the top quark, $t \to H^\pm b$ with $H^\pm \to cs$, is presented. This search targets the production of top-quark pairs $t\bar{t} \to Wb H^\pm b$, with $W \to \ell\nu$ ($\ell = e, \mu$), resulting in a lepton-plus-jets final state characterised by an isolated electron or muon and at least four jets. The search exploits $b$-quark and $c$-quark identification techniques as well as multivariate methods to suppress the dominant $t\bar{t}$ background. The data analysed correspond to 140 $\text{fb}^{-1}$ of $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector at the LHC between 2015 and 2018. Observed (expected) 95% confidence-level upper limits on the branching fraction $\mathscr{B}(t\to H^\pm b)$, assuming $\mathscr{B}(t\to Wb) + \mathscr{B}(t \to H^\pm (\to cs)b)=1.0$, are set between 0.066% (0.077%) and 3.6% (2.3%) for a charged Higgs boson with a mass between 60 GeV and 168 GeV.

Searching for resonant flavor-changing charged Higgs production at the LHC

Abstract:We suggest a resonant $c \bar b \to H^+$ production search, followed by bosonic $H^+ \to W^+ H$ weak decay at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). In the general two Higgs doublet model (G2HDM) that has flavor-changing neutral Higgs couplings, $H^+$ is resonantly produced via the top-charm $\rho_{tc} V_{tb}$ coupling at tree level, while $H^+ \to W^+ H$ weak decay occurs within the exotic second doublet, leading eventually to same sign dilepton signals. Abstract:A search is presented for new Higgs bosons in proton-proton (pp) collision events in which a same-sign top quark pair is produced in association with a jet, via the pp $\to$ tH/A $\to$ t$\mathrm{\bar{t}}$c and pp $\to$ tH/A $\to$ t$\mathrm{\bar{t}}$u processes. Here, H and A represent the extra scalar and pseudoscalar boson, respectively, of the second Higgs doublet in the generalized two-Higgs-doublet model (g2HDM). The search is based on pp collision data collected at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV with the CMS detector at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{-1}$. Final states with a same-sign lepton pair in association with jets and missing transverse momentum are considered. New Higgs bosons in the 200-1000 GeV mass range and new Yukawa couplings between 0.1 and 1.0 are targeted in the search, for scenarios in which either H or A appear alone, or in which they coexist and interfere. No significant excess above the standard model prediction is observed. Exclusion limits are derived in the context of the g2HDM.

Towards the Fate of Natural Composite Higgs Model Through Single T ′ Search at the 8 TeV LHC

Abstract:We analyze the observational potential of single t ′ production in both the t ′ → bW and t ′ → th decay channels at 8 TeV LHC using an integrated luminosity of 25 fb−1. Our analysis is based on a simplified model with minimal coset SO(5)/SO(4) in which the t ′ is a singlet of the unbroken SO(4). The single t ′ production, as a consequence of electroweak symmetry breaking, is less kinematically suppressed, associated with a light forward jet and has boosted decay products at the 8 TeV LHC. Therefore it provides the most promising channel in searching for a heavy t ′ . We have exploited the above kinematical features and used the jet substructure method to reconstruct the boosted Higgs in th decay channel. It is shown that a strong constraint on the t ′ bW coupling (g t ′ bW /g tbW,SM < 0.2 ~ 0.3) at the 95% C. L. can be obtained for m t′ ⊂ (700, 1000) GeV.

Abstract:The search for heavy Higgs bosons at the LHC represents an intense experimental program, carried out by the ATLAS and CMS collaborations, which includes the hunt for invisible Higgs decays and dark matter candidates. No significant deviations from the SM backgrounds have been observed in any of these searches, imposing significant constraints on the parameter space of different new physics models with an extended Higgs sector. Here we discuss an alternative search strategy for heavy Higgs bosons decaying invisibly at the LHC, focusing on the pair production of a heavy scalar H together with a pseudoscalar A, through the production mode q q ¯ → Z ⁎ → H A . We identify as the most promising signal the final state made up of 4 b + E T miss , coming from the heavy scalar decay mode H → h h → b b ¯ b b ¯ , with h being the discovered SM-like Higgs boson with m h = 125 GeV , together with the invisible channel of the pseudoscalar. We work within the context of simplified MSSM scenarios that contain quite heavy sfermions of most types with O ( 10 ) TeV masses, while the stops are heavy enough to reproduce the 125 GeV mass for the lightest SM-like Higgs boson. By contrast, the gauginos/higgsinos and the heavy MSSM Higgs bosons have masses near the EW scale. Our search strategies, for a LHC center-of-mass energy of s = 14 TeV , allow us to obtain statistical significances of the signal over the SM backgrounds with values up to ∼ 1.6 σ and ∼ 3 σ , for total integrated luminosities of 300 fb − 1 and 1000 fb − 1 , respectively.

Abstract:The article is devoted to the searches for new particles predicted by physics beyond the Standard Model through the b-tagging algorithm. The dependence of b-tagging efficiency on the jet identification, impact parameter identification, secondary vertex identification, kinematic cuts is studied with the help of computer programs Pythia 8.2 and Fastjet 3.3.0. The selection criteria for kinematic parameters, their ratios for an optimal result on the reconstruction of the vertices of heavy particles are found.
