Abstract:The coupling of two-dimensional (2D) layered materials is an effective way to realize photocatalytic hydrogen production. Herein, using first-principles calculations, the photocatalytic properties of GaN/CNs heterojunctions formed by two different graphite-like carbon nitride materials and GaN monolayer are discussed in detail. The results show that the GaN/C2N heterojunction can promote the effective separation of photogenerated electron and hole pairs, which is attributed to its type-II band orientation and high carrier mobility. However, the low overpotential of GaN/C2N for photocatalytic hydrogen production limits the photocatalytic performance. On this basis, we adjust the CBM position of the GaN/C2N heterojunction by applying an electric field to enhance its hydrogen evolution capability. In addition, the GaN/g-C3N4 is a type-I heterojunction, which is suitable for the field of optoelectronic devices. This work broadens the field of vision for the preparation of highly efficient photocatalysts.

Abstract:The two-dimensional layered heterostructure have been demonstrated as an effective method for achieving efficient photocatalytic hydrogen production. In this work, we propose, for the first time, the creation of van der Waals heterostructures from monolayers of SiH and g-C3N4 using first-principle calculations. We also systematically investigated additional properties for the first time, such as the electronic structure and optical behavior of van der Waals heterostructures composed of SiH and g-C3N4 monolayers. The results of this study show that the SiH/g-C3N4 heterostructure is categorized as a type-II heterostructure, which has a bandgap of 2.268 eV. Furthermore, the SiH/g-C3N4 heterostructure interface was observed to efficiently separate and transfer photogenerated charges, resulting in an enhanced photocatalytic redox performance. Moreover, the calculation of HOMO (Highest occupied molecular orbital) and LUMO (Least unoccupied molecular orbital) and charge density difference can further confirm that the SiH/g-C3N4 heterojunction is a type-II heterojunction, which has excellent photocatalytic hydrogen production and water decomposition performance. In addition, the SiH/g-C3N4 heterostructure exhibited excellent HER (Hydrogen evolution reaction) efficiency. This is essential for the process of photocatalytic water splitting. In SiH/g-C3N4 heterojunctions, the redox potential required for water splitting is spanned by the band edge potential. Calculating the absorption spectra, it was discovered that the SiH/g-C3N4 heterostructure possesses outstanding optical properties within the visible-light range, implying its high efficiency in photocatalytic hydrogen production. This research provides a broader research direction for the investigation of novel efficient photocatalysts and offers effective theoretical guidance for future efficient photocatalysts.

Abstract:With the increasing environmental pollution and energy crisis, it is significant to develop environmentally friendly and adjustable photocatalysts for water splitting. Here we explored the optoelectronic properties of several H-GaN/MgI2 vdW heterostructures by regulating different polarization surfaces and numbers of GaN layers. Our results demonstrate that all structures, except 2L-Ga-GaN/MgI2, exhibit excellent physical stability. Moreover, the band structures and band edge positions demonstrate that only the heterostructure of 3L-Ga-GaN/MgI2 with both suitable band alignment (type-II) and an acceptable band gap (∼1.92 eV) is most satisfactory for water splitting. Additionally, the absorption coefficient of the 3L-Ga-GaN/MgI2 heterostructure can reach over ∼105 cm-1, which has further confirmed its excellent advantage in photocatalysis. Finally, in the case of 6% external strain for the 3L-Ga-GaN/MgI2 heterostructure, a rollover in band alignment (from type-II to type-I) is exhibited. These promising features of the GaN/MgI2 vdW heterostructure give a new paradigm for developing novel efficient and adjustable photocatalytic water-splitting materials.

Abstract:s Constructing van der Waals heterostructure has triggered enormous interest in the field of photocatalytic water splitting. Herein, we have investigated the structural, electronic and optical properties of g-GaN/C 2 N heterostructure by first-principles methods, and further discussed the implications from the viewpoint of photocatalytic applications. Our results show that g-GaN/C 2 N heterostructure is a type-II heterostructure, possessing staggered energy band arrangements, which benefits to the effective spatial-separation of photogenerated carriers. The bandgap is predicted to be 1.92 eV, governing a wide optical absorption spectrum from visible-light to ultraviolet-light with the magnitude of 10 5 cm −1 . Moreover, its band edges span water redox potentials, satisfying the requirement of overall photocatalytic water splitting. In addition, the electronic properties of g-GaN/C 2 N heterostructure could be modulated by applying biaxal strain, resulting in an increasement of optical absorptions in the visible-light range. Finally, excellent stability of adsorbing water molecule on the g-GaN/C 2 N heterostructure is shown. These theoretical predictions suggest that the g-GaN/C 2 N heterostructure is promising for photocatalytic water splitting.

Abstract:Integrating carbon nitride with graphene into a lateral heterojunction would avoid energy loss within the interlaminar space region on conventional composites. To date, its synthesis process is limited to the bottom-up method which lacks the targeting and homogeneity. Herein, we proposed a hydrogen-initiated chemical epitaxial growth strategy at a relatively low temperature for the fabrication of graphene/carbon nitride in-plane heterostructure. Theoretical and experimental analysis proved that methane via in situ generation from the hydrogenated decomposition of carbon nitride triggered the graphene growth along the active sites at the edges of confined spaces. With the enhanced electrical field from the deposited graphene (0.5%), the performances on selective photo-oxidation and photocatalytic water splitting were promoted by 5.5 and 3.7 times, respectively. Meanwhile, a 7720 μmol/h/g(graphene) hydrogen evolution rate was acquired without any cocatalysts. This study provides an top-down strategy to synthesize in-plane catalyst for the utilization of solar energy.

Abstract:Type-II van der Waals heterojunction photocatalyst is not only an ideal material for hydrogen production by water splitting, but also an important way to improve efficiency and produce low-cost clean energy. In this work, we unexpectedly found that monolayers of AlN and C2N, g-C3N4, and C6N8 all formed type-II heterojunctions according to density functional theory, and reported a comparison of photocatalytic performance.Among them, the AlN/C2N heterojunction has the mildest bandgap of 1.61 eV(1.23 eV of water splitting ). It has higher carrier mobility than AlN/g-C3N4 (electron 440.4 cm2·V-1·s-1 > 113.2 cm2·V-1·s-1 and hole 63.8 cm2·V-1·s-1>36.8 cm2·V-1·s-1). Close to the absorption peak of a monolayer of C2N in visible light (about 8x104 cm-1) and the absorption peak of a single layer of AlN in the ultraviolet region (about 11x104 cm-1). The Bader charge shows that the charge transfer number of AlN/g-C3N4 heterojunction is higher than that of AlN/C2N, and its Gibbs free energy (-0.22 eV) is smaller than that of single layer g-C3N4 (-0.30 eV). The final AlN/C6N8 heterojunction also has a mild band gap of 2.16 eV and an absorption peak of over 10x104cm-1 in the UV region. Since the type-II heterojunction can effectively promote the separation of photogenerated electrons-holes pairs and prevent their rapid recombination, the above heterojunctions are promising candidates for new photocatalysts.

Abstract:Two-dimensional van der Waals (vdW) heterojunctions have been regarded as promising candidates for photocatalytic water splitting and solar energy conversion. Here, we propose a two-dimensional GeC/GaN vdW heterostructure, where the GaN monolayer and the GeC monolayer are stacked. The binding energy, phonon spectrum, and elastic constants demonstrate this material's high dynamic and mechanical stability. Most notably, the GW band structure, GW + Bethe-Salpeter equation (BSE) optical absorption spectrum, and the band alignment of the density functional theory (DFT) scheme and empirical formula reveal that the GeC/GaN vdW heterostructures have a dramatically high optical absorption coefficient (∼105 cm-1) in the visible region and a suitable band edge with sufficiently large kinetic overpotentials of the hydrogen evolution reaction (ΔEc ≥ 1.945 eV) and the oxygen evolution reaction (ΔEv ≥ 1.244 eV). Photogenerated electrons and holes aggregate on the GeC monolayer and GaN monolayer surfaces, respectively, which could make this heterojunction a promising candidate for photocatalytic water splitting and solar energy conversion.

Abstract:Constructing layered heterostructured photocatalysts based on two dimensional semiconductor materials, such as transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) and graphitic carbon nitride (CxNy), has become a research hotspot in photocatalysis with the remarkable improvement of photoexcited charge separation efficiency. Herein, the electronic properties and photocatalytic activities of WS2/C2N bilayer and trilayer heterojunctions have been comparatively investigated using first-principles calculations. The results demonstrate that the WS2/C2N, WS2/C2N/WS2, and C2N/WS2/C2N are type-II van der Waals heterostructures, with an indirect bandgap of 1.79 eV, 1.72 eV, and 1.79 eV, respectively. Compared to WS2/C2N bilayer, the two sandwiched heterojunctions demonstrate stronger interfacial interactions, charge transfer, and visible-light absorption. The free energy calculations for redox reactions of the sandwiched heterojunctions further demonstrate high catalytic activity for hydrogen evolution reaction. More interestingly, biaxial strains can adjust the bandgap width (semiconductor→metal) and induce the band type transition (indirect→direct) in WS2/C2N sandwiched heterojunctions. For example, a weak stress about 1% leads to direct band gap both in type-II WS2/C2N/WS2 and C2N/WS2/C2N heterojunctions, without degrading their excellent abilities for water decomposition. This work not only provides rational strategies to design TMDs/CxNy-based photocatalysts in view of interface and bandgap engineering, but also reveals their potential applications in electronic and optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:Two-dimensional van der Waals heterostructures with multiple tunable approaches in electronic and optical properties are highly superior for photocatalysis and novel devices. By applying first-principles calculations, we systematically studied the electronic structure, optical absorption, carrier mobility and solar-to-hydrogen efficiency of PtSe 2 /GaN heterostructures, which are affected by different thicknesses, varying directions of polarization of the GaN nanosheets and applied mechanical strain of the whole system. The results indicate that these heterostructures exhibit thermodynamic stability at room-temperature (300 K), and most configurations have type-II band alignment, among which the heterostructure consisting of GaN trilayers and PtSe 2 shows high visible-light absorption (1.71 × 10 5 cm −1 ) and ultra-wide range of pH values (pH = 0–14) for the photocatalytic water splitting reaction and exceedingly high overpotential for the hydrogen evolution reaction (3.375 eV). Simultaneously, being two of the most significant parameters of photocatalysis and devices, the carrier mobility and solar-to-hydrogen efficiency have also been calculated, respectively, reaching up to 1601 cm 2 V −1 s −1 and 17.2%. Moreover, the photoelectrical properties can be highly tuned through further biaxial strain engineering; especially, the visible-light absorption can be enhanced to 2.85 × 10 5 cm −1 by applying 6% compression strain. Thus, the PtSe 2 /GaN heterostructure we proposed shows a broad prospect for photocatalytic water splitting.

Abstract:Using two-dimensional semiconductors to build heterojunction as photocatalyst for water splitting is an important green and clean energy technology and has wide development prospects. Here, the monolayered PtS2 and g-C3N4 are used to build the direct Z-scheme van der Waals (vdW) heterostructure, and the structure, electrical, Bader charge, optical properties and solar-to-hydrogen efficiency are calculated in detail through first-principle calculations. The direct Z-scheme PtS2/g-C3N4 vdW heterostructure has an inherent type-II band alignment that enables it to reduce the photogenerated carriers aggregation, and it also possesses a decent band edge position to fully induce the redox reactions of decomposed water. The charge density shows that PtS2 monolayer is negatively charged while g-C3N4 monolayer is positively charged, and the interface potential drop of PtS2/g-C3N4 vdW heterostructure forms a built-in electric field with the direction from g-C3N4 to PtS2. The PtS2/g-C3N4 vdW heterostructure has suitable optical property, outstanding solar-to-hydrogen efficiency, high catalytic activity and thus a promising application prospect for photocatalytic water splitting.

Abstract:The electronic transport properties, photocatalytic reaction mechanism and optical properties of novel g-C6N6/GaS heterojunction are investigated by first-principles calculations in this work. The results demonstrate that g-C6N6/GaS forms a type-II heterojunction with the band edge straddling the redox levels of water and satisfying the requirements for overall water splitting reactions. Driven by the band offset and the built-in electric field at the interface, the photogenerated electrons and holes flow to the conduction band of g-C6N6 and the valence band of GaS, respectively. The effective separation of electron-hole pairs in space benefits to improve the photocatalytic efficiency. In addition, g-C6N6/GaS heterojunction exhibits excellent optical absorption in visible light region. Therefore, the g-C6N6/GaS heterojunction is a promising candidate for photocatalytic overall water splitting and solar energy conversion.

Abstract:Photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (PC-HER) provides a solution to energy crisis and environmental pollution. Herein, different graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4)-based van der Waals (vdW) type II homojunctions have been fabricated and g-C3N4/K-doped g-C3N4 nanosheets have an outstanding PC-HER rate of 1,243 µmol-h−1·g−1 under visible light, higher than that of bulk g-C3N4, doped g-C3N4 nanosheets, and mixed nanosheets. The enhanced PC-HER performance can be ascribed to the cooperative effects of the shortened bandgap, enlarged specific surface area, matched type II energy band structure, “face to face” vdW charge interaction, and peculiarly partite positions of the conduction and valence bands in different layers. Besides, the type II junctions were found superior to binary type II junction. This study highlights the synergistic effect of different strategies in improving the PC-HER capacities of g-C3N4, especially the application of particular vdW junctions, and provides new insights to the structures and mechanism.

Abstract:Graphite-like carbon nitride (g-C3N4) based heterostrutures has attracted intensive attention due to their prominent photocatalytic performance. Here, we explore the g-C3N4/SnS2 coupling effect on the electronic structures and optical absorption of the proposed g-C3N4/SnS2 heterostructure through performing extensive hybrid functional calculations. The obtained geometric structure, band structures, band edge positions and optical absorptions clearly reveal that the g-C3N4 monolayer weakly couples to SnS2 sheet, and forms a typical van der Waals heterojunction. The g-C3N4/SnS2 heterostructure can effectively harvest visible light, and its valence band maximum and conduction band minimum locate in energetically favorable positions for both water oxidation and reduction reactions. Remarkably, the charge transfer from the g-C3N4 monolayer to SnS2 sheet leads to the built-in interface polarized electric field, which is desirable for the photogenerated carrier separation. The built-in interface polarized electric field as well as the nice band edge alignment implys that the g-C3N4/SnS2 heterostructure is a promising g-C3N4 based water splitting photocatalyst with good performance.
Two-dimensional CrSe 2 /GaN heterostructures for visible-light photocatalysis with high utilization of solar energy

Abstract:Nowadays, designing a two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals heterostructure (vdWH) is one of the most promising methods for improving photocatalytic performance and harvesting solar energy. Here, we proposed a novel CrSe 2 /GaN vdWH as an efficient photocatalyst for overall water splitting. The elastic constants, phonon dispersion, and ab-initio molecular dynamics simulation show high mechanical and thermodynamic stability. The HSE06 functional reveals that CrSe 2 /GaN vdWHs possess a direct bandgap. The DFT scheme suggests that the current vdWH belongs to the type-II band alignment and has enough kinetic redox potentials for overall photocatalytic water splitting. The intrinsic electric-field accelerates the photogenerated carrier separation. The carrier mobility of the CrSe 2 /GaN vdWH is observed to be enhanced as compared to the mobility of the CrSe 2 monolayer. Additionally, the optical absorption of the vdWH is found to be high in the visible and ultraviolet regions. The CrSe 2 /GaN vdWH has a high efficiency of solar-to-hydrogen energy conversion (33.41%). The Gibbs free energy shows that the redox reactions (HER & OER) could be sustained under the action of an external electric-field. Finally, the external strain can tune the band edge and optical absorption of the CrSe 2 /GaN vdWH for desired applications. Therefore, the CrSe 2 /GaN vdW heterostructure could be an excellent photocatalyst for water splitting with high solar energy conversion.

Abstract:The development and design of efficient photoelectric catalysts is of great significance for environmental friendliness. This paper is devoted to finding a new two-dimensional van der Waals heterojunction to realize hydrogen production from water splitting. Based on first-principles calculations, a direct type-Z C3N/WS2 heterojunction was successfully designed by combining highly active two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) with C3N similar in structure to graphene. The staggered band structure of the direct Z-scheme and high carrier mobility facilitates the efficient separation of photogenerated electron and hole pairs. More importantly, the C3N/WS2 direct Z-type heterojunction can perfectly realize total water splitting from pH = 0 to pH = 7. What's more, the Gibbs free energy and overpotential demonstrate the excellent hydrogen evolution capability and the oxygen evolution capacity of the material. In , these studies provide new ideas for designing high-performance photoelectric catalysts for visible-light water splitting.

Abstract:Herein, ZnS/g-C3N4 heterojunction structures were prepared by a rapid microwave method with a proper number density of defects such that they become efficient photocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction. The ZnS/g-C3N4 nanocomposites present a maximum hydrogen production rate of 65.43 μmol h−1 under visible light irradiation, which is ~7 times larger than that of g-C3N4. This good catalyst performance originates from the high efficiency of photoproduced charge separation due to the intimate interfacial contact of ZnS and g-C3N4 in the ZnS/g-C3N4 heterojunctions, as well as the presence of Zn vacancies on the ZnS surface. This work offers a simple strategy for building highly efficient photocatalytic materials for H2 evolution in water splitting.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) heterostructures have proven their efficiency in separating charges. Herein, a gC3N4/MoS2 (CN/MoS2) photocatalyst, in the form of 2D/2D van der Waals heterojunction with a type-II band alignment, was synthesized using a novel one-step method. The resulting in-situ formed heterojunction interface enhances electron transfer from gC3N4 to MoS2. The CN/MoS2 photocatalyst exhibits exceptional activity in generating hydrogen from water under simulated solar light. Its hydrogen production rate was 1285 μmol/h/g, which was approximately 3 times higher compared to gC3N4. This superiority is due to a significant increase in photogenerated carrier density and efficient charge separation facilitated by the type-II heterojunction. This study demonstrates a straightforward one-step approach for synthesizing 2D/2D composite photocatalysts, highlighting the effective synergy between different 2D materials in promoting hydrogen generation.

Abstract:The weaker van der Waals force between layers inhibits the interlayer electron migration, which greatly limiting the enhancement of the photocatalytic activity over graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4). Herein, the metal-free sulfur-doped 2D/3D van der Waals (vdW) homojunction (2D/3D CNSCN) that containing 2D sulfur-doped g-C3N4 nanosheets (CNS) and 3D g-C3N4 flower-like hierarchical structure (CN) was fabricated. Thanks to the cooperative effect of 2D-3D structural and good compatibility between CNS and CN, an in situ formed 2D/3D vdW homojunction served as the driving force for promoting charge carrier separation and transfer. The optimal photocatalytic H2 evolution of 2D/3D CNSCN reached up to 2196 μmol h−1g−1, which was 4.1 and 3.2 times higher than that of CN and CNS, respectively. 10 mg of the 2D/3D CNSCN photocatalyst was able to totally remove of rhodamine B (RhB) solution in less than 80 min under the visible light. This study provides new opportunities to construct novel 2D/3D mixed-dimensional vdW homojunction, and broad interest in vdW homojunction research for the applications in energy conversion and environmental protection field.

Abstract:Photocatalytic water splitting provides a green method to solve the energy shortage issue. Combine two-dimensional carbon nitride nano sheets with other two-dimensional semiconductors can effectively increase the construct area and improve the utilization of photogenerated charges. Herein, 2D-2D NiCo-LDH/g-C3N4 composites were successfully prepared by a simple hydrothermal method. The lamellar NiCo-LDH was grown in situ on g-C3N4, in which way the hydrogen production rate was enhanced by about 21 times, reaching 755 μmol·g−1·h−1. According to the results of density functional theory (DFT) calculations, an S-type heterojunction is successfully constructed, which achieves the spatial separation of semiconductor photogenerated electron-hole with guaranteed strong redox capability. This work emphasizes that effective transport channels for transfer and separation of photogenerated charges can be created through efficient interfacial regulation strategy.
