Abstract:Background and Purpose: The study aims to determine the experiences of Turkish mothers with physical disabilities in the care of their children and their expectations from nurses in this process and ensure the establishment of strategic recommendations for nurses in line with these expectations. Methods: This qualitative descriptive study included 21 mothers with physical disabilities of nondisabled children aged 0–18 years. Data analysis was conducted using the traditional content analysis method in the Max Qualitative Data Analysis Analytics Pro 2020 program. Results: Six themes were obtained from the analysis. Of the six themes determined, the themes “Prenatal Emotions and the Need for Support,” “Postpartum Emotions and Childcare,” “Strategies Facilitating the Care Process,” “Child’s Safety,” “Advantages and Disadvantages,” and “Expectations and Recommendations” are related to childcare, while the theme “Expectations and Recommendations” is related to expectations from nurses and other healthcare professionals and recommendations to mothers with physical disabilities. Implications for Practice: The participants stated that nurses’ training and attempts to provide information related to their needs resulting from physical disabilities were limited.

Abstract:Problem: Autism is an illness with severe deficits in reciprocal social interactions, imagination, communication, and restricted or unusual behavioral repertories that affect all areas of a child's life such as daily living activities, home/school life, and relationships with family members and others. Yet, there is much to be learned about the impact of this disorder on parents' experiences, and ways in which their lives are altered and ways that they can be assisted to better manage the home environment. Methods: The purpose of this study was to explore and categorize the experiences of mothers having an autistic child using a phenomenological design in the qualitative tradition. Semistructured interviews were conducted with 43 mothers regarding their experiences with their autistic children. Data were analyzed with deductive content analysis based on coding, and were grouped into categories based on common themes. The distributions of common responses in categories were presented as percentages. Findings: Based on this qualitative study, mothers expressed feelings of burden and stress because of their child's behaviors associated with autism, as well as their own role and future expectations, and the complexity of care needed by their children at home. Conclusions: This study provided new knowledge about the difficulties and experiences of mothers of autistic children in Turkey. The results underscored the needs of mothers who require support from family members, healthcare organizations, and society. The findings support the need for training programs for mothers and parents conducted by nurses and other healthcare professionals who have special knowledge and skill to provide education and modeling of therapeutic interventions.
Challenges Faced by Mothers With Visual Impairment From the Preconception Period Through the Postpartum Period

Abstract:Introduction There is a misperception in society that individuals with visual impairment are asexual and cannot marry, have children, or take care of children. In addition, individuals with visual impairment face difficulties in many aspects of life due to accessibility issues. Although it is expected that visually impaired individuals experience difficulties when having children, very few studies have focused on understanding the challenges women with visual impairment face in the process of having children. The aim of this study was to identify the challenges faced by mothers with visual impairment from preconception through the postpartum period in Turkey. Methods Semistructured interviews were conducted with a purposive sample of 17 mothers with visual impairment. Participants were from 28 to 38 years of age, and their youngest children were 2 years old or younger. Participants were asked about their experiences with the decision to have children, pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. Content analysis was used to analyze and present the data. Results Participants had 1 to 3 children and a mean age of 32.4 years. Eleven themes were identified within 4 periods: preconception, pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. Themes related to the experience of the preconceptional period included concern about the decision to have a child and the social pressure on the decision to have a child. Themes related to the experience of pregnancy included inaccessible pregnancy tests, emotional reactions to pregnancy, dissatisfaction with health care providers, and unmet expectations. Themes related to labor and birth included mixed feelings about labor dissatisfaction with health care providers and unmet expectations. Themes related to the postpartum period included personal care, infant care, reaction of the social network, and unmet expectations. Discussion The mothers with visual impairment faced many challenges in the process of becoming a parent. Mothers expressed the need for accessible health services from institutions and health professionals.

Postpartum periods of visually impaired mothers: A qualitative study

Abstract:Background Parenting for individuals with visual impairments introduces unique challenges, requiring meticulous planning, attention and care in daily activities and child‐rearing. Objective This qualitative study aims to explore the postpartum experiences of visually impaired mothers, exploring their emotional challenges, support networks and experiences in caring for infants and breastfeeding. Methods Twelve participants engaged in in‐depth interviews, revealing emotional difficulties such as uneasiness, anxiety, fear and challenges in baby care. Results The study highlights the pivotal role of family, spouses and relatives in providing crucial support, contributing significantly to overcoming challenges related to childcare and breastfeeding. Supportive family involvement emerged as a key factor in meeting the emotional needs of visually impaired mothers during the postpartum period, fostering confidence in baby care and breastfeeding and transforming the experience into a more positive one. Conclusion The findings highlight the importance of understanding and addressing the postpartum experiences of visually impaired mothers, advocating for more effective support programs tailored to their unique needs.

Reflection of the mother-daughter relationship on the perception of birth: a qualitative study among pregnant women

Abstract:This research is conducted to examine the effect of pregnant women's relationships with their mothers on their perception of birth. This is a qualitative analytic study. This research is carried out with 19 pregnant women who received service from a state hospital in a southern province of Turkey between November-December 2020. Pregnant women between the ages of 18-35, at the 32nd gestational week and above, and who had an active relationship with their mother were included in the study. Data were collected by interview method using semi-structured questions. Descriptive analysis was performed for the analysis of the data. All transcripts were evaluated by two researchers and codes were created. The codes formed the subthemes in terms of similarities and differences, themes were created as a result of combining themes. The data obtained consists of three main themes: 1) Mother - daughter relationship, 2) Perception of birth, 3) Perception of maternal support at the moment of birth.

Abstract:Bacground: This research was conducted to examine the caregiving burden and stress situations of mothers with children with special needs. Methods: The research, which is descriptive and correlation-seeking, was conducted between September 2022 and September 2023 in special education and rehabilitation centers in a city in eastern Turkey. The population of the research consists of the mothers of 2072 children who received education in the specified Special Education and Rehabilitation Centers between the specified dates. The sample size was determined to be 324 individuals based on the known sampling method. "The Personal Information Form, the Zarit Caregiving Burden Scale, and the Perceived Stress Scale were used to collect the data for this study. The data was analyzed using the SPSS package software. For the interpretation of the data, percentages, means, standard deviations, one-way variance analysis, independent groups t-test, Pearson correlation, and simple linear regression were used. Findings: Among the mothers, 44% were aged 30-39, 87.0% had a child with a disability, and 51.9% had a child with an intellectual disability. The mean total scores of the mothers were 26.71 ± 8.80 for the Zarit Caregiving Burden Scale and 27.00 ± 11.35 for the Perceived Stress Scale. There is a difference between the mothers' age, education level, income level and the type of disability of their child and the Zarit Caregiving Burden scale score average; It was determined that there was a significant difference between the place of residence and the number of disabled children they had and the average score of the Perceived Stress Scale. A positive correlation was found between Zarit Caregiving Burden Scale scores and Perceived Stress Scale scores of the mothers (p < 0.05). Application to practice: The study revealed that mothers with children with special needs experienced higher levels of stress as their care burden increased. Providing economic assistance and informing and training mothers about the care of children with special needs were recommended to reduce the care burden of mothers with children with special needs.
Relationship between perceptions of family-to-family support, general well-being, and psychological resilience of mothers with children with special needs

Abstract:This study aimed to investigate the association between perceptions of family-to-family support and the general well-being and psychological resilience of mothers raising children with special needs. Employing a descriptive correlational research design, the study included mothers of children aged 0-18 residing in a city center in northeastern Türkiye. Data collection was conducted through face-to-face interviews using the Personal Information Form, Brief Psychological Resilience Scale, General Well-Being Scale Short Form, and Family-to-Family Support Perception Scale for Families of Disabled Children. The results revealed a positive and significant relationship between mothers' perceived level of family-to-family support and their psychological resilience (β=0.437, p<0.01). Furthermore, a positive relationship was observed between mothers' general well-being levels and perceived support (β=0.315, p<0.05). However, no significant relationship was found between general well-being levels and psychological resilience (β=0.189, p>0.05). These findings underscore the significant connections between perceived family-to-family support, general well-being, and psychological resilience among mothers of children with special needs. They suggest a critical need for developing enhanced social and psychological support mechanisms to alleviate the stress and difficulties experienced by these mothers.

Abstract:Background Early intervention services play a crucial role in the prevention and management of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). With the increasing prevalence of ASD, understanding the specific needs of mothers and their children is essential for the development of effective interventions and support systems. Methods This interview study examines the early intervention service needs of Turkish mothers with children aged 2–6 who have been diagnosed with ASD. Semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with nine mothers. Thematic analysis was carried out following the guidance and six steps procedures described by Braun and Clarke. Findings The study's findings reveal six distinct themes that encompass the needs expressed by the participating mothers: 1) psychological support needs, 2) social support needs, 3) financial support needs, 4) strengthening the family, 5) government-based enhancement, and 6) the need for social awareness. Discussion The findings underscore the significance of comprehensive early intervention services tailored to address the needs of mothers. The stressors associated with the impact of ASD on families are highlighted, aligning with Guralnick's framework. The findings emphasize the need for holistic intervention programs and stress the importance of collaborative relationships among parents, educators, and service providers. Application to practice The practical implications of this study benefit healthcare professionals, policymakers, educators, and stakeholders. The emphasis lies in aligning interventions with the ASD needs of both mothers and children, ultimately aiding in the development of effective policies and the enhancement of the quality of care for individuals with ASD in Turkey.

Perceptions of Play Among Mothers and Fathers from Low-Income Households in Türkiye

Abstract:In this phenomenological study, we explored the play perceptions of parents with young children from low-income households in Türkiye. Data were collected through individual semi-structured interviews with 36 parents (18 mothers and 18 fathers), all of whom have children in their early childhood years. We transcribed the interviews and conducted a thematic analysis. The findings illuminate the diverse perceptions of children's play among parents in low-income households, highlighting a shared recognition of play as a social activity and a source of joy, while also revealing differing views. Parents in the study generally value studying, health, and familial love and respect above play. Their control over children's playtime is significantly influenced by concerns over academic performance and safety. Mothers are typically the primary participants in children's play due to their increased presence at home, while fathers' participation is significantly limited by work obligations and exhaustion.

"All in One: Fear, Happiness, Faith" A Qualitative Study on Experiences and Needs of Turkish Mothers of Infants with Congenital Heart Disease

Abstract:Having an infant with congenital heart disease (CHD) may cause difficulties and changes in mothers' life. This study was aim to explore the experiences and needs of Turkish mothers of infants with CHD. The study was carried out with the descriptive phenomenological method from qualitative research. The study sample included 18 mothers having infants in the age range of 0 to 2 years with CHD. The data were collected using a sociodemographic data form and a semi-structured interview form. The data obtained from the interviews were evaluated using the content and thematic analysis methods. Four main themes and sub-themes emerged from the qualitative data. "Effect of getting a diagnosis" with two sub-themes (emotional changes and a protective mother-infant relationship), "All emotions in one" with two sub-themes (fearing of death and torn between fear and hope), "Influences on a mother's life" with three sub-themes (forgetting herself, getting away from siblings' lives and relations with spouse), and stressors with three sub-themes (loss of control, physical care and unfulfilled needs). The results of the study provide insight into how Turkish mothers subjectively experience life after CHD. Mothers expected healthcare professionals to support and understand their experiences and needs. Healthcare professionals need to create an environment for mothers to cope with emotional difficulties, gain knowledge and care skills, and adapt to their lives.

Abstract:Introduction: When the development of gifted children is noticed and supported by their teachers in the preschool period, the problems they experience in education life become minimized. The aim of the study is to determine the problems experienced by gifted children in the preschool period. For this purpose, the effects of informing mothers about the development of their gifted children in the preschool period, the educational problems experienced by the children in preschool education institutions, and the expectations of mothers from preschool education were examined in line with the perceptions of the mothers.Method: The study was planned in a phenomenological pattern, one of the qualitative research methods. The study group consists of 75 mothers with gifted children determined through the criterion sampling method. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and were analyzed with the content analysis technique.Findings: In the study, it was determined that preschool teachers gave information to families about their children's different developmental characteristics, learning skills, giftedness, and creativity. The educational problems experienced by gifted children in the preschool period were grouped under the themes of the activity applied, the materials used, the teacher, peer interaction, and the school. The expectations of mothers from preschool education were gathered under the themes of activity, teacher, educational environment, social emotional development, and early identification.Discussion: Since most of the gifted children were noticed in the preschool period by their teachers who did not make adequate interventions, educational problems arose. The expectation of families from preschool education is that their educational problems are solved.Conclusion: Recognition of gifted children in the preschool period is the beginning of their education process that will improve their potential. Therefore, educational measures should be taken to maximize the potential of these children and to minimize the problems they experience.

Abstract:This exploratory and qualitative study aimed to investigate the experiences of parents of children with intellectual disabilities during toilet training. Between 8 December 2023 and 1 February 2024, 20 mothers were interviewed face-to-face in special education and rehabilitation centres in Zonguldak, Türkiye. The interviews were thematically analysed, revealing four main themes: (1) Techniques used in toilet training, (2) Problems in toilet training, (3) Negative mood symptoms, and (4) Requirements. Mothers faced many problems in toilet training of their children with intellectual disabilities. They realised that they had to be patient and consistent in this process. They were trying different methods to teach this habit to children. However, the mothers also had the feeling inadequacy. They thought their children could acquire toilet habits more quickly when they were patient, knew how to teach correctly and effectively, and were supported. Indeed, with support applications made or to be made to families, it can be ensured that children can overcome the toilet training process more comfortably and with behaviour acquisition.

Analysis of physical activity level and body awareness of mothers of children with special needs

Abstract:We aimed to analyze physical activity level and body awareness of mothers of children with physical disability and to compare with mothers without a disabled child. A total of 102 participants including 51 mothers with a disabled child and 51 mothers without a disabled child were included (average age 38.59 ± 5.98). Body Awareness Questionnaire (BAQ) and International Physical Activity Questionnaire-Short Form (IPAQ-SF) were used as data collection tools. It was found that physical activity levels and body awareness of the mothers with a disabled child were lower than mothers without a disabled child. In conclusion, during rehabilitation of children with physical disability, mothers should become a part of the treatment, their participation in physical activity programs and body awareness training should be encouraged.

Abstract:Purpose: This study aimed to determine the level of anxiety, depression, support needs and opinions of mothers of children with cerebral palsy. Design and methods: The study used a descriptive qualitative design. The population of the study consisted of children with cerebral palsy who were educated in special education centers in a province of Eastern Turkey. All participants who volunteered for the study were accepted and the study was completed with 126 mothers. Results: Caregiver mothers with male cerebral palsy patients had higher carer support needs and anxiety total mean scores. The mean scores of depression and anxiety of the mothers who were older were statistically higher. This study found that mothers of children with diseases other than cerebral palsy had statistically higher mean depression scores. The mothers of child with cerebral palsy who had a high gross motor classification score had higher mean carer support needs, depression, and anxiety total scores. Conclusions: According to the study, depression and trait anxiety were linked to greater maternal support needs. Qualitative interviews revealed that mothers experienced issues such as stigmatization and withdrawal from social activities as a result of their children's illness. Practice implications: This study shows the relationship of need for support of mothers of children with cerebral palsy and mental problems such as depression and trait anxiety. Pediatric nurses should provide emotional support to mothers and guide them towards support groups and training programs.
The Relationship Between Fatigue and Quality of Life in the Turkish Mothers of Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder

Abstract:This study aimed to investigate the different effects of fatigue and health-related quality of life in the Turkish mothers of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) through comparisons with mothers of typically developing children, and to evaluate the relationship between different aspects of maternal fatigue, depression, and maternal health-related quality of life. The study included a total of 103 mothers, comprising 60 mothers of children with ASD and 43 mothers of typically developing children. The Nottingham Health Profile and Quality of Life in Autism Questionnaire-Parent Version were used to assess the health-related quality of life. Fatigue was assessed comprehensively with the Fatigue Impact Scale and the Fatigue Severity Scale. The Nottingham Health Profile total and physical mobility domain and the quality of life were the strongest factors, explaining with a variance of 66.7% the fatigue impact on cognitive function. The mothers' quality of life accounted for 64.8% of the variance in factors that explained fatigue. Physical mobility, social isolation and quality of life were associated with the physical impact of fatigue and were explained with a variance of 52.4%. Emotional reactions and quality of life were explained with a variance of 52.7% in the fatigue of psychosocial function. The current study has highlighted that the fatigue of Turkish mothers of children with ASD has a greater impact on cognitive, physical and psychosocial functions. Furthermore, the quality of life, physical mobility, social isolation, and emotional reactions of mothers have a significant impact on maternal fatigue.

Abstract:Mothers face considerable parenting challenges because of premature birth and its subsequent phases. This study aims to develop a grounded theory that encompasses the psychosocial experiences of mothers with premature infants in Türkiye, spanning from the prenatal period to the child's school age. Charmaz's (2014) constructivist grounded theory methodology was employed. Initial analyses involved a document containing in-depth interview transcriptions from nine mothers. Subsequently, a Facebook group for mothers with premature infants was observed, becoming a crucial data source through theoretical sampling, involving 287 mothers and their cross-sectional or longitudinal data. The mean age of mothers was 34.5 ± 4.6 years old. The grounded theory, ' Becoming a marginalized mother ,' highlights individual and collective parenting experiences of mothers within two main categories. ' Navigating a challenging journey ' involves beginning a traumatic motherhood journey, struggling as a mother, trying to cope, and embracing the role of mothering a premature infant. ' Journeying together ' involves seeing the group as a valuable source, building a sense of unity, and finding comfort and support. Mothers' individual and collective experiences contained the feeling of marginalization as a mother. Mothers experienced psychological distress and positive psychological changes over an extended timeline. Results emphasize the contributions of improvements in children's health and development, personal coping strategies, and positive online group interactions as social support on embracing the role of mothering a premature infant and, herewith, mothers' psychological health. Therefore, it should be essential to support mothers' personal and social resources and their infant's health and development longitudinally with an interdisciplinary approach in practice. Abstract:The study intended to search the role of mothers in rehabilitating their children with adventitious visual impairment. The design of the study was qualitative and exploratory. Mothers (N=15) of visually impaired children from various age groups were the sample of the study. A convenient sampling technique was used for sampling procedures. A self-developed semi-structured interview was the tool of this study. Instruments validity was confirmed through expert opinion (N=03). An extensive literature review guided the researcher towards the reliability of the instrument. A coding & thematic analysis approach was done for Data analysis. Three major themes emerged from interview transcription including mother's understanding, problems of mothers, and educational support. The study's findings show that mothers remain worried about their children's future. Although, mothers face many difficulties in accepting the acquired blindness of children. This study recommends particular orientation & training sessions for mothers of visually impaired children and adequate social support.

Abstract:Rare diseases (RDs), important for children and families, have been poorly studied in Turkey. This study aimed to describe the experiences and needs of mothers whose children have RDs from the perspectives of their mothers. In‐depth interviews were held with the mothers of 16 children followed up in the Pediatric Nutrition and Metabolism Outpatient Clinic of a University Hospital. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis procedures. The experiences of mothers caring for children with RDs were categorized into three main themes: (1) challenges with treatment, (2) burden of care, and (3) expectations. This study demonstrated that mothers of children with RDs experienced many common challenges in caregiving.
