Abstract:Rub-impact is a kind of serious malfunction, which often occurs in rotating machinery. The non-stationary rub-impact signals are always submerged in the background and noise signals, which makes it difficult to accurately diagnose the rubbing based on the hand-designed features extracted by the traditional methods. This paper presents a 1-D convolutional neural network (CNN) based approach to automatically learn useful features for rub-impact fault diagnosis from the raw vibration signals of a rotor system. The proposed model is trained on a dataset of vibration signals obtained from an industrial hydro turbine rotor. The results show that timely and accurate rub-impact fault detection can be achieved by a simple 1-D CNN configuration.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper aims to address the issue of rub-impact fault diagnosis in rotating machinery. Specifically, rub-impact between the rotor and stator is a severe fault type, usually caused by installation errors, uneven gaps, or imbalance, which can lead to catastrophic failures and economic losses. Therefore, early and accurate diagnosis of such faults is of practical significance. Traditional fault diagnosis methods include signal processing techniques based on time-domain analysis, frequency-domain analysis, and time-frequency analysis, as well as mathematical modeling. However, these methods have some shortcomings in practical applications, such as the limitations of Fourier transform in handling non-stationary signals, interference terms and energy leakage issues in wavelet transform, and mode mixing problems in empirical mode decomposition (EMD). Additionally, these methods typically require human experts to interpret features to identify different machine states, which increases the time cost and complexity of diagnosis. To overcome these issues, the paper proposes a method based on one-dimensional convolutional neural networks (1-D CNN) to automatically extract useful rub-impact fault features directly from the raw vibration signals and achieve accurate fault diagnosis. Through training, the 1-D CNN can effectively identify rub-impact faults in turbines and has real-time diagnostic capabilities. This method simplifies the workflow, avoiding the complex feature engineering process in traditional methods, thereby improving diagnostic efficiency.
