Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs), which are a new class of porous organic materials, are considered as potential candidates for separation membranes because of their regular channels and tailored functionality. The imine-linked COF was synthesized using reversible condensation reactions, resulting in its un-stabilization in the acid environment. Thus, it is a formidable challenge to develop stable COFs membranes for applications in harsh environments (e.g. strong acid). Herein, we demonstrated the in-situ construction of acid-stable COF separating layer (TMTATGCl) on the surface of the hydrophilic hydrolyzed polyacrylonitrile (HPAN) substrate via acid-catalyzed interfacial polymerization. Triaminoguanidine chloride (TGCl), a cationic monomer, was used to construct cationic nanochannels in the COF layer, conferring its screening feature toward cations, especially toward divalent cations. Besides, implanted methoxy groups could facilitate H+ diffusion along the pore pathway of the as-prepared COF. As a result, the methoxy functionalized cationic nanochannels of the DMTATGCl/HPAN enhanced H+ transfer, while other ions (e.g. Fe2+) were obstructed, allowing for high selectivity (S =1248.9) and permeability (UH+ = 0.0118 m/h). Moreover, the membranes (TMTATGCl/HPAN) exhibited remarkable acid-stability, which maintained the high separation performance after 10 cycles under strong-acid conditions. This study provides an effective strategy for developing the ion channels membrane with specific interaction sites for effective ion separation.

Abstract:The emergence of all‐organic frameworks is of fundamental significance, and designing such structures for anion conduction holds great promise in energy conversion and storage applications. Herein, inspired by the efficient anion transport within organisms, a de novo design of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) toward ultrafast anion transport is demonstrated. A phase‐transfer polymerization process is developed to acquire dense and ordered alignment of quaternary ammonium‐functionalized side chains along the channels within the frameworks. The resultant self‐standing COFs membranes exhibit one of the highest hydroxide conductivities (212 mS cm−1 at 80 °C) among the reported anion exchange membranes. Meanwhile, it is found that shorter, more hydrophilic side chains are favorable for anion conduction. The present work highlights the prospects of all‐organic framework materials as the platform building blocks in designing ion exchange membranes and ion sieving membranes.

Simple Transformation of Covalent Organic Frameworks to Highly Proton-Conductive Electrolytes

Abstract:We report the rational design and implementation of a new class of gel guest-assisted, ionic covalent organic framework (COF) membranes that exhibit superior H+ conduction. The as-synthesized COFs are postmodified via a lithiation (or sodiation) treatment. The hydrophilic Li or Na ions in the COFs form a dense and extensive hydrogen-bonding network of H2O molecules with mobile H+ at the periphery, thereby transforming COFs into H+ conductors. Then, the ionic COFs are assembled into a flexible H+ conductor membrane via a gelation process, where the organic gel provides both mechanical strength and additional H+ carriers for fast H+ conduction. The final COF-based membrane exhibits an excellent H+ conductivity of 1.3 × 10-1 S cm-1 at 313 K and 98% relative humidity, which are the highest values of the COF-based H+ conductors reported until now and are even comparable with those of the typical commercial Nafion membrane. We anticipate that the two-in-one strategy would open up a porous COF-driven new molecular framework and membrane architectural design/opportunity for development of next-generation ionic conductors.

Abstract:Nature's various hierarchical structures exhibit exceptional performance in enhancing mass transport. However, how to bionic nano-hierarchical structures to enhance ion dynamics and achieve charge regulation is a significant challenge. Herein, a nano-hierarchical porous hybrid membrane inspired by nature was designed by integrating 1D metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) on the 2D MXene substrate utilizing MOF nanoparticles with tailorable positive and negative surface charges. The synergistic effects of the bioinspired nanohierarchical porous structure and surface charge interactions significantly enhance the performance and stability of the nanoconfined membrane, as corroborated by experimental characterizations and theoretical simulations. As a result, the optimized nanohierarchical porous membrane exhibits high a cation selectivity of 0.95, an outstanding power density of 35.04 W m-2, and excellent stability over one month. Synergizing enhanced mass transport and ion dynamics in nano-hierarchically structured materials with tailored charge improves osmotic power generation efficiency and benefits logic circuits with controlled charge transport.

Abstract:Anion exchange membranes with high anion conductivity are highly desired for electrochemical applications. Increasing ion exchange capacity is a straightforward approach to enhancing anion conductivity but faces a challenge in dimensional stability. Herein, we report the design and preparation of three kinds of isoreticular covalent organic framework (COF) membranes bearing tunable quaternary ammonium group densities as anion conductors. Therein, the cationic groups are integrated into the backbones by flexible ether-bonded alkyl side chains. The highly quaternary ammonium-group-functionalized building units endow COF membranes with abundant cationic groups homogeneously distributed in the ordered channels. The flexible side chains alleviate electrostatic repulsion and steric hindrance caused by large cationic groups, ensuring a tight interlayer stacking and multiple interactions. As a result, our COF membranes achieve a high ion exchange capacity and exceptional dimensional stability simultaneously. Furthermore, the effect of the ionic group density on the ion conductivity in rigid COF channels is systematically explored. Experiments and simulations reveal that the ionic group concentration and side chain mobility jointly determine the ion transport behavior, resulting in the abnormal phenomenon that the anion conductivity is not positively correlated to the ionic group density. The optimal COF membrane achieves the ever-reported highest hydroxide ion conductivity over 300 mS cm-1 at 80 °C and 100% RH. This study offers insightful guidelines on the rational design and preparation of high-performance anion conductors.

Abstract:Anion exchange membranes with potentially high conductivity and stability are urgently demanded in alkaline anion exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs). However, the design and preparation of novel hydroxide-conducting material remain grand challenges. Herein, we demonstrate a significantly enhanced hydroxide conduction hybrid membrane with multi-ion nanochannels assembled by embedding two-dimensional covalent organic framework (COF) sheets into one-dimensional comb-shaped poly (2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide) (PPO) chains. Hydrophilic imidazole-based ionic liquids (im-IL) in-situ polymerize within the ordered pores of COF PI-2, forming long-range continuous ion channels. Then the poly ionic liquid-loaded covalent organic frameworks (im@PI-2) as a novel filler is embedded into imPPO to construct hybrid membranes with multi-ion nanochannels. A remarkable hydroxide conductivity of 147 mS/cm (80 °C and 100% RH) and a maximum power density of 140 mW/cm2 are readily achieved for the hybrid membrane with 5 wt% im@PI-2 content. Particularly, the chemical stability, thermal stability, mechanical properties, and swelling resistance of the hybrid membrane are dramatically promoted by the introduction of im@PI-2. Meanwhile, the transfer of hydroxide in hybrid AEM is investigated by molecular dynamics simulations, which clarify the significant role of PI-2 one-dimensional channels in elevating hydroxide transport.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) display great potential to be assembled into proton conductive membranes for their uniform and controllable pore structure, yet constructing self‐standing COF membrane with high crystallinity to fully exploit their ordered crystalline channels for efficient ionic conduction remains a great challenge. Here, a macromolecular‐mediated crystallization strategy is designed to manipulate the crystallization of self‐standing COF membrane, where the −SO 3 H groups in introduced sulfonated macromolecule chains function as the sites to interact with the precursors of COF and thus offer long‐range ordered template for membrane crystallization. The optimized self‐standing COF membrane composed of highly‐ordered nanopores exhibits high proton conductivity (75 mS cm −1 at 100 % relative humidity and 20 °C) and excellent flow battery performance, outperforming Nafion 212 and reported membranes. Meanwhile, the long‐term run of membrane is achieved with the help of the anchoring effect of flexible macromolecule chains. Our work provides inspiration to design self‐standing COF membranes with ordered channels for permselective application.

Abstract:Side‐chain engineering of covalent organic frameworks as advanced ion conductors is a critical issue to be explored. Herein, ionic covalent organic framework membranes (iCOFMs) with spacer‐engineered ionic channel are de novo designed and prepared. The ionic channels are decorated with side chains comprising spacers having different carbon chain lengths and the –SO3H groups at the end. Attributed to the synergistic contribution from the spacers and the –SO3H groups, the iCOFM with moderate‐length spacer exhibit the highest through‐plane proton conductivity of 889 mS cm‐1 at 90 °C.

Abstract:Two-dimensional covalent organic frameworks (2D COFs) have sparkled wide-ranging research to explore proton-conducting materials. However, the powder-pressed pellets or continuous membranes of 2D COFs are composed of randomly arranged crystallites, which are undesirable for proton transport via a shortcut pathway. We report a controlled strategy for preparing a conformably oriented free-standing COF membrane to address the critical challenge. A monofunctional aldehyde precursor is used as a modulator to enhance reversible association and optimize growth orientation in an interfacial polymerization system. The preferred face-on alignment is achieved throughout the membrane from its flat side to the nanoflake-standing side and, in turn, generates the unidirectional pore channels for accommodating 1,2,4-triazole as proton carriers. The composite merges distinctive features including orientation, crystallinity, porosity, and mechanical strength into one system, exhibiting ultrafast and stable anhydrous proton conduction at high operating temperatures with low activation energy. Our findings offer an innovative strategy for the oriented crystallization of free-standing COF membranes for energy conversion applications.

Abstract:Mimicking proton conduction mechanism of Nafion to construct novel proton-conducting materials with low cost and high proton conductivity is of wide interest. Herein, we have designed and synthesized a cationic covalent organic framework with high thermal and chemical stability by combining a cationic monomer, ethidium bromide (EB) (3,8-diamino-5-ethyl-6-phenylphenanthridinium bromide), with 1,3,5-triformylphloroglucinol (TFP) in Schiff base reactions. This is the first time that the stable cationic crystalline frameworks allowed for the fabrication of a series of charged COFs (EB-COF:X, X = F, Cl, Br, I) through ion exchange processes. Exchange of the extra framework ions can finely modulate the COFs' porosity and pore sizes at nanoscale. More importantly, by introducing PW12O40(3-) into this porous cationic framework, we can greatly enhance the proton conductivity of ionic COF-based material. To the best of our knowledge, EB-COF:PW12 shows the best proton conductivity at room temperature among ever reported porous organic materials.

Abstract:Developing new materials for anhydrous proton conduction under high-temperature conditions is significant and challenging. Herein, we create a series of highly crystalline covalent organic frameworks (COFs) via a pore engineering approach. We simultaneously engineer the pore geometry (generating concave dodecagonal nanopores) and pore surface (installing multiple functional groups such as -C=N-, -OH, -N=N- and -CF3 ) to improve the utilization efficiency and host-guest interaction of proton carriers, hence benefiting the enhancement of anhydrous proton conduction. Upon loading with H3 PO4 , COFs can realize a proton conductivity of 2.33×10-2 S cm-1 under anhydrous conditions, among the highest values of all COF materials. These materials demonstrate good stability and maintain high proton conductivity over a wide temperature range (80-160 °C). This work paves a new way for designing COFs for anhydrous proton conduction applications, which shows great potential as high-temperature proton exchange membranes.

Abstract:The prepared zwitterionic covalent organic framework membrane with precise framework structures and uniform charge distribution exhibits high flux and excellent antifouling property to both anionic and cationic pollutants, owing to the regular nanochannels and the tight hydration layer on the membrane surface and pore walls to minimize the interaction between the membrane surface and the pollutants. Zwitterionic membranes demonstrate excellent antifouling property in water purification. The covalent organic frameworks (COFs), due to the ordered channels and abundant organic functional groups, have distinct superiority in constructing zwitterionic surfaces.Here, the zwitterionic COF membrane is prepared with precise framework structures and uniform charge distribution. The negatively charged 4,4′‐diaminobiphenyl‐2,2′‐sisulphonic acid sodium (SA) and positively charged ethidium bromide (EB) fragments are used to react with 1,3,5‐triformylphloroglucinol (TP) at the gas‐liquid interface to prepare zwitterionic COF membrane. The complementary charged fragments in the inter‐layer and inner‐layer facilitate the formation of continuous and tight hydration layer on the membrane surface and pore walls to resist the adsorption of pollutants. The zwitterionic COF membrane effectively resists both negatively charged bovine serum albumin and positively charged lysozyme pollutants with flux recovery ratio (FRR) of 97% and 85%, respectively. Furthermore, the regular nano‐channels and balanced interactions between water and surface/pore walls of the zwitterionic membrane result in outstanding permeability of up to 146 L m−2 h−1 bar−1 and excellent dye/salt separation selectivity. The water permeation and antifouling mechanism of membranes are elucidated by experimental and molecular dynamics calculation. Zwitterionic COF membranes can find promising applications in preparing high‐performance antifouling membranes.

Abstract:Abstract 3D ionic covalent organic framework (COF) membranes, which are envisioned to be able to break the trade-off between ion conductivity and ion selectivity, are waiting for exploitation. Herein, we report the fabrication of a 3D sulfonic acid-functionalized COF membrane (3D SCOF) for efficient and selective ion transport, using dual acid-mediated interfacial polymerization strategy. The 3D SCOF membranes possess highly interconnected ion transport channels, ultramicroporous pore sizes (0.97 nm), and abundant sulfonate groups (with a high ion exchange capacity of 4.1 mmol g −1 ), leading to high proton conductivity of 843 mS cm −1 at 90 °C. When utilized in osmotic energy conversion, a high power density of 21.2 W m −2 , and a remarkable selectivity of 0.976 and thus an exceptional energy conversion efficiency of 45.3% are simultaneously achieved. This work provides an alternative approach to 3D ionic COF membranes and promotes the applications of 3D COFs in ion transport and separation.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) covalent organic framework (COF) membranes featuring well-aligned and programmable vertical nanochannels have emerged as a promising candidate for advanced nanofluidic devices and showcased vast potential in the fields of smart-gating, ion-separation, and energy-harvesting. However, the transverse interlayer nanochannels with a height of sub-nanometer-scale in 2D-COF membranes have scarcely been studied in comparison. Here, we report the ion transport characteristics in 2D interlayer nanochannels of protonated COF membranes. The distinct surface-charge-governed ionic conductance in domination of electrolyte concentration below 10(-3) M as well as the exceptional anion/cation (Cl-/K+) selectivity is revealed due to the pronounced charge and nano-confinement effects. Additionally, evident ion current rectification is witnessed when incorporating asymmetric geometry into the system, which is attributed to the dynamic process of ion enrichment and dissipation within the protonated nanochannels. This work offers immense prospects for 2D-COF membranes in the fields of biomimetic nanofluidic devices and cutting-edge electronic devices.

Abstract:Alkali holds a pivotal role in the chemical industry, however, the substantial discharge of alkaline wastewater causes a severe waste of resources and environmental pollution. Conventional polymer membranes have ether bonded backbones and form randomly assembled nanochannels, suffering from a weak alkali resistance and a low hydroxide ion selectivity. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs), known for their robust framework structure, highly ordered channels, and tunable channel chemistry, have been considered as the competent candidate for alkaline-resistant membranes for selective hydroxide ion separation. Herein, we fabricate a beta-ketoenamine COF (TpTAPB) membrane with a high alkaline resistance via the interfacial growth strategy. After post-sulfonation, the negatively charged channels of sulfonated TpTAPB membrane allows OH- with smaller size and lower charges to pass through while repulsing WO42- ions, achieving a selectivity of OH-/WO42- up to similar to 60 and surpassing commercial and most reported polymeric membranes. This work expands the application scope of COF membranes in selective alkali separation.

The well crystallinity and the rigid backbone endow the zwitterionic COF membrane with continuous transport channels and non‐swelling character, thus make the COF membrane with high proton conductivity and excellent water retention capability. Efficient construction of proton transport channels in proton exchange membranes maintaining conductivity under varied humidity is critical for the development of fuel cells. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) hold great potential in providing precise and fast ion transport channels. However, the preparation of continuous free‐standing COF membranes retaining their inherent structural advantages to realize excellent proton conduction performance is a major challenge. Herein, a zwitterionic COF material bearing positive ammonium ions and negative sulphonic acid ions is developed. Free‐standing COF membrane with adjustable thickness is constructed via surface‐initiated polymerization of COF monomers. The porosity, continuity, and stability of the membranes are demonstrated via the transmission electron microscopy (TEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) characterization. The rigidity of the COF structure avoids swelling in aqueous solution, which improves the chemical stability of the proton exchange membranes and improves the performance stability. In the higher humidity range (50–90%), the prepared zwitterionic COF membrane exhibits superior capability in retaining the conductivity compared to COF membrane merely bearing sulphonic acid group. The established strategy shows the potential for the application of zwitterionic COF in the proton exchange membrane fuel cells.

Mechanoassisted Synthesis of Sulfonated Covalent Organic Frameworks with High Intrinsic Proton Conductivity

Abstract:It is challenging to introduce pendent sulfonic acid groups into modularly built crystalline porous frameworks for intrinsic proton conduction. Herein, we report the mechanoassisted synthesis of two sulfonated covalent organic frameworks (COFs) possessing one-dimensional nanoporous channels decorated with pendent sulfonic acid groups. These COFs exhibit high intrinsic proton conductivity as high as 3.96 × 10(-2) S cm(-1) with long-term stability at ambient temperature and 97% relative humidity (RH). In addition, they were blended with nonconductive polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) affording a series of mixed-matrix membranes (MMMs) with proton conductivity up to 1.58 × 10(-2) S cm(-1) and low activation energy of 0.21 eV suggesting the Grotthuss mechanism for proton conduction. Our study has demonstrated the high intrinsic proton conductivity of COFs shedding lights on their wide applications in proton exchange membranes.
De Novo Design of Aminopropyl Quaternary Ammonium‐Functionalized Covalent Organic Frameworks for Enhanced Polybenzimidazole Anion Exchange Membranes

Abstract:A novel quaternary ammonium functionalized COFs with an aminepropyl spacer (DCOF) is designed. The membrane containing 20 wt.% DCOF achieves a peak power density of 323 mW cm−2, surpassing most recently reported composite membranes. Quaternary ammonium functionalized covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have great potential to enhance hydroxide transport owing to crystalline ordered 1D nanochannels, however, suffer from limited quaternary ammonium functional monomers and poor membrane‐forming ability. In this work, a novel aminopropyl quaternary ammonium‐functionalized COF (DCOF) is designed and synthesized via a bottom‐up strategy. The self‐supporting DCOF membrane exhibits high crystallinity with a dense and orderly arrangement of quaternary ammonium groups (IEC, 2.07 mmol g−1), achieving a high hydroxide conductivity of 172.5 mS cm−1 and an extremely low water swelling of 5.3% at 80 °C. The exfoliated DCOF colloidal suspension is further incorporated into quaternary ammonium di‐cation grafted polybenzimidazoles (DPBI) matrix. Molecular simulations reveal strong electrostatic and van der Waals interfacial interactions between DCOF and DPBI, which enable a high doping content of 20 wt.% and interconnected ionic channels through the surface and nanochannels of the DCOF. The DCOF/DPBI‐20% membrane exhibits a tensile strength of 29.7 MPa, a hydroxide conductivity of 135.3 mS cm−1, and a low swelling ratio of 37.2% at 80 °C. A H2/O2 single cell assembled with the membrane reaches a peak power density of 323 mW cm−2, surpassing most recently reported COF‐based membranes.
