Abstract:Modal parameters are of great significance in civil engineering because they can characterize the properties of structures and be used for vibration control and structural health monitoring. Subway tunnels are long linear truss structures combined with the mutual coupling of the surrounding soil. Therefore, the operational modal analysis of a mutual coupling tunnel is complicate, as is the modal identification of shield tunnels in a time–frequency domain, and these are hot civil engineering topics. Using the shield tunnel of Shanghai metro line No.12 project as a case study, we carried out the vibration response monitoring of a subway tunnel during operation and presented methods to identify structural modal parameters. The modal parameters of lower vibration modes were estimated using response measurements. Modal frequencies and shapes were identified with high precision and accuracy using the orthogonal polynomial clustering algorithm under hammer excitation conditions and the autoregressive-moving-average model under ambient excitation conditions. The dynamic behavior of a mutual coupling tunnel presented obvious low frequency characteristics, and the first 9th order mode frequencies were less than 100 Hz. The diagonal values of the modal assurance criteria were all greater than 0.85. The modal parameters can be used for the health monitoring of operational subway tunnels.

Abstract:The subway systems play a vital role in alleviating the urban traffic congestion problem. Recently, lots of underground railway transportation networks have been opened to operation or are being constructed in major cities of China. Due to the complexity and uncertainty inherent in excavation activities, metro station excavations brings a challenge to civil engineering communities and poses threat to the public safety in metropolitan regions. The stability of deep excavation and adjacent buildings has gained highlighted concerns during metro station construction. A viable and practical way to ensure the construction safety is by executing real-time monitoring strategy with the aid of advanced sensing and signal processing technologies.In this paper, the design and implementation of a long-term monitoring and safety evaluation system for the deep excavation of a metro station has been addressed. A software platform has been developed for analyzing and processing monitoring data based on the concept of dynamic construction inverse analysis, which includes the database system, the dynamic construction feedback system, and the deformation forecasting system. Field monitoring results in various categories during deep excavation are presented. After examining the field measurement results, the following conclusions are drawn: (i) the deformation of the diaphragm wall and ground surface settlements increased with the excavation depth; (ii) the location of the maximum horizontal displacement moved downward to the excavation face during excavation; (iii) the axial forces of struts transferred from the first row to the others during excavation; and (iv) the monitoring results indicate that the braced excavation remained overall stable at the construction stage. Abstract:During the tunnel construction, the soil loss and construction methods cause the soil deformation around the tunnel. The existed constructions and pipes are terribly affected by soil deformation. Hence, the significant studying on the soil displacement is implemented during tunneling construction. On the background of Hangzhou Metro Linel, the in-site monitoring is implemented to find the discipline of the soil deformation development. The numerical method is applied to simulate the tunneling process, and the results meet the discipline of monitoring data. The conclusions are consulted for soil deformation prediction during the tunnel construction.

Abstract:The metro tunnel lines built in a soft soil area may suffer from tunnel differential settlement due to the high compressibility of soft soil, the engineering constructions nearby tunnel lines, and the cyclic load of metro trains. In this paper, a dynamic coupling model for a metro train-monolithic bed track system under tunnel differential settlement is established. A cosine function is introduced to simulate a real settlement curve measured from a metro tunnel in southern China, and the vibration performance of the train-track system under tunnel settlements is investigated in both the time domain and frequency domain. Based on the standards for the train safety and passengers’ comfort, the speed limit for the metro train traveling on a monolithic bed track with different settlement distributions are concluded. The present research could be useful for the operation and maintenance of metro tunnels in soft soil areas.

Abstract:Shield tunneling construction of metro infrastructure will continuously disturb the soils. The ground surface will be subjected to uplift or subsidence due to the deep excavation and the extrusion and consolidation of the soils. Implementation of the simultaneous monitoring with the shield tunnel construction will provide an effective reference in controlling the shield driving, while how to design and implement a safe, economic, and effective structural monitoring system for metro infrastructure is of great importance and necessity. This paper presents the general architecture of the shield construction of metro tunnels as well as the procedure of the artificial ground freezing construction of the metro-tunnel cross-passages. The design principles for metro infrastructure monitoring of the shield tunnel intervals in the Hangzhou Metro Line 1 are introduced. The detailed monitoring items and the specified alarming indices for construction monitoring of the shield tunneling are addressed, and the measured settlement variations at different monitoring locations are also presented.

Abstract:The project of Hangzhou Metro Line 1 is the first metro line of the urban rapid rail transit system in Hangzhou, China, which is one of the largest municipal projects of Hangzhou and is being constructed commencing from March 28, 2007 and expected to be completed by October 1, 2012. This metro line has a total length of 48 km and 34 stations, connecting Hangzhou downtown with the suburban area of the city. Owing to the complex geological condition, harsh construction situation, and immature computational methodology, construction of metro systems is often subjected to considerable sources of uncertainties. To ensure the safety of the adjacent building structures, it is a vital necessity to monitor deep excavations of metro tunnels at their in-construction stage. This paper introduces the instrumentation system for settlement monitoring of a metro-tunnel airshaft of the project of Hangzhou Metro Line 1 during the construction of deep excavation. The long-term settlement data monitored by the measurement markers installed at the surface ground and in the depth direction of the airshaft excavation construction site are analyzed and presented in detail. The obtained results indicate that the settlements at the instrumented locations of the construction site during different construction steps vary steadily in an allowable variation range.

Abstract:As more and more metros were built in modern city, the new constructing metro lines will be inevitably crossing the existing one. During the construction process of the new metro line, excavation may lead to the displacement of the existing tunnels and the tracks, sequentially affect the travel of trains, so monitoring on the new constructing lines is very important. The traditional manual monitoring techniques can be not available due to the busy traffic. Therefore, automatic remote real-time monitoring system should be applied to supervise the deformation of structures and tracks of existing metro 24-hours/7 days. During the construction of new metro station under-pass a existing station in Beijing, DAMS-IV intelligent distributed safety monitoring system was adopted, 84 hydro-static levelings and other instruments were installed to monitor the exiting station structures and the tracks; The observed data do help to adjust the construction plan and grouting strength to make sure that the deformation of the existing station and tracks was under control.

Abstract:Field monitoring was performed to investigate the evolution of vibration transmission, pore pressure dissipation, and ground settlement due to metro running at the early operation stage in saturated soft strata. The vibration-induced acceleration attenuates substantially from the rail to the track bed and segmental lining. Then, it gradually declines further to the saturated soft strata. The metro-induced acceleration amplitudes on workdays are 25% higher than those on weekends. The vertical vibration induced by the metro is magnified when close to the ground surface. Once the metro vibration arrives, the excess pore water pressure will increase sharply in a very short time, i.e., less than 10 s. Utilizing real-time monitoring piezometers, the affected domain of the pore pressure where most of the change in pore pressure takes place is restricted to the annulus that extends to a distance of 1 dia from the tunnel boundary, beyond which the change in pore pressure is negligible. Furthermore, the ground continues to undergo settlement at the early operation stage for a duration of 6 months, after which the deformation will become stable. When the curvature of the tunnel axis is sufficiently large, the centripetal force produces a transverse horizontal acceleration component that is more than the vertical acceleration component, which is completely different from that with a straight tunnel axis. The analyzed monitoring results provide an in-depth understanding of the physical issue pertaining to the behavior of subway tunnels at the early operation stage in saturated soft strata.

Monitoring and analysis of segment leakage of shield tunnels from Hangzhou subway system

Abstract:Shield segment is the outermost layer barrier and the permanent structure of shield tunnels, and it plays important functions regarding resistance to soil pressure, groundwater pressure and special loads in other forms. Long-term leakage problem of shield tunnels would adversely affect the operation and durability of tunnels. The present study carried out on-site monitoring of the leakage conditions of subway tunnel segments of Hangzhou subway route one along three subareas of Yanan Road, and the measured data are used for statistical analysis. The results showed that the main modes of segment leakage include joint leakage and grouting hole leakage, among which joint leakage is the major form of segment leakage. Also, segment leakage conditions varied among different subareas. Even for the same subarea, seepage location and corresponding amount altered through time. For all three subareas, the average value of the total leakage ring was 15.6%, with the maximal value of 40.8%, indicating a serious segment leakage problem. Furthermore, segment leakage conditions varied at different orientation. The worst leakage problem is found at the top of the segment, and the severity of leakage problem gradually decreased from the top to the bottom of the segment. In contrast, time and weather are not the major factors that affect segment leakage.

Abstract:Incremental dynamic analysis constitutes the basis of seismic performance evaluation and seismic vulnerability assessment. In this paper, a typical two-story three-span subway station structure is selected as an example structure and its incremental dynamic analysis procedure are presented, including selection of ground motion, intensity measure and limit state determination. The incremental dynamic analysis procedure provided in this study can be a basis for further study on seismic design for underground structural systems.
Monitoring data analysis on the influence of large deep foundation pit excavation on nearby metro shield tunnel

Abstract:The large deep foundation pit adjacent to the Hangzhou Metro Line 2, pit-in-pit excavation and the binding beam connecting underground diaphragm wall and a row of the same depth of isolation pile are used as special reinforcement measures. Horizontal displacement, vertical displacement and horizontal convergence of the tunnel caused by excavation are monitored. Rules of the influence of large deep excavation on the nearby tunnel and effect of reinforcement measures are analyzed. Empirical formulas of horizontal displacement of the tunnel is proposed. The results show that the horizontal deformation of normal distribution in tunnel increases obviously and transverse diameter of tunnel increases obviously that leads to the tunnel shows a shape of the horizontal ellipse. The horizontal displacement and convergence of the tunnel satisfies the codes and settlement satisfies the alarm value which is settled. The reinforcement measures of the project are applied to large deep foundation pit. "Step excavation, cut-and-support, step concrete placing" should be taken as excavation methods and width which is exposed of foundation pie adjacent to tunnel caused by excavation can be decreased.

Abstract:In order to study the impact of test piles on an adjacent metro tunnel, the displacement of the tunnel bal?last bed, the vertical and horizontal displacement as well as the convergence of the tunnel structure were monitored during the construction of the bridge test piles. Two kinds of piling equipment were adopted for test piles of a bridge project in Hangzhou, with casing pipes to be pulled out or not. The results show that bridge pile construction may cause tunnel deformation that is far less than that caused by later settlement of the piles;tunnel deformation fluctu?ates a lot in the course of pulling out the casing pipe, an impact that can be mitigated by slowing down the speed of construction and optimizing the construction scheme;the closer the bridge pile and subway tunnel are, the greater the impact on the subway tunnel is and the larger the radius of the settlement funnel is.

Abstract:Research purposes: There are considerable uncertainties existing in deep excavation activities and the field monitoring data cannot directly reflect the present excavation stability condition in most cases.In this paper,combing Bayesian updating with Monte Carlo finite element method,real-time reliability assessment of stability during the excavation of Pengbu station of Hangzhou Metro is performed based on field measurement data. Research conclusions: The results show that,in comparison with conventional method,it is more rational to estimate the failure probability of deep excavation by use of field monitoring data.This method can effectively enhance the accuracy of excavation stability analysis and avoid the problems resulting from the errors of the inclinometer readings.The horizontal displacement monitoring data of the diaphragm wall can be used as the input information of reliability analysis.The selection of failure criteria has a significant influence on the stability analysis results.The proposed method can compensate for the limitations of conventional reliability analysis and is a promising alternative method for stability analysis of excavation based on field monitoring data.

Abstract:Real‐time automatic displacement monitoring of metro tunnels is vital for ensuring operational safety and contributes to carbon reduction goals by improving system efficiency. This study focuses on key monitoring elements such as displacement, settlement, convergence, and cracking. Through the analysis of continuous monitoring data, a real‐time displacement monitoring model for metro tunnels based on robotic total stations is proposed. This model can timely identify potential risks, thereby ensuring the safe operation of tunnels and reducing carbon emissions from unnecessary maintenance operations, thereby reducing the carbon footprint of metro operations. This article takes the Jinan Metro Tunnel Displacement Real‐time Monitoring Project in China as a case study and constructs a comprehensive monitoring framework using robotic total stations, intelligent automated deformation monitoring data collectors, and cloud servers. The implementation details of the project, displacement monitoring principles, monitoring system construction, and data analysis processes are elaborated in detail. Taking the monitoring data of Jinan Metro Line 2 from April 1, 2022, to May 31, 2023, as an example, the results show that the tunnel displacement is within the safe range, verifying the practical application value of the method proposed in this paper. It can effectively ensure the safe operation of the metro and promote sustainable development and low‐carbon metro construction.

Abstract:A super-span tunnel that has the characteristics of a large excavation area, a small high-span ratio and a significant spatial effect exhibits a complex mechanical response during the excavation process. In this paper, taking the Badaling Great Wall station in Beijing, China as the engineering background, a case study of field monitoring a super-span tunnel has been presented. A typical monitoring section was selected in the super-span transition section of the tunnel and the deformation and forces of both the surrounding rock and the support structures were systematically monitored. The dynamic evolution and the spatial distribution characteristics of the monitoring data, including the internal displacement of the surrounding rock, the tunnel displacement, the contact pressure between the surrounding rock and the primary supports, the contact pressure between the primary and secondary supports, the axial forces in the bolts and cables, the internal forces in both the steel arches and the secondary supports and the internal stresses of the surrounding rock, were analyzed. The results of the monitoring and the analyses have shown that the deformation and the forces acting on both the surrounding rock and the tunnel’s lining are directly related to the construction procedures, the geological conditions and the locations in the super-span tunnel. According to the results, a few suggestions to improve the construction of the tunnel have been proposed.

Abstract:<p>Real-time displacement monitoring is important for ensuring the safety of subway tunnel structures when construction activities are carried out near them. Owing to the special environmental characteristics of tunnels, many displacement monitoring techniques are either inapplicable to subway tunnel structures or have limitations in terms of the accuracy and automation of monitoring. Therefore, this article focuses on the automatic monitoring of subway tunnel displacement using robotic total stations. Using prisms as reflectors, the robotic total stations can perform highly accurate displacement monitoring by measuring angles and distances in a non-contact manner. A mathematical model for displacement monitoring with one total station in a short monitoring zone is developed, and a model for monitoring a long tunnel zone with multiple total stations is derived to guarantee the accuracy of monitoring. An automatic displacement monitoring system with robotic total stations is built, where the data acquisition and data management of the system are detailed through its hardware composition and software functions, respectively. An experiment on a tunnel showed the available monitoring range of a single robotic total station, and the accuracy of monitoring the long zone with multiple robotic total stations was verified. The application of the monitoring system to the Guangzhou Metro Line 2 confirmed its robustness.</p>

Abstract:Taking a deep open excavation of Nanjing subway station as the engineering background,the deformation of the support structure of the excavation was studied using the common finite element software in two-dimensional. The analysis was compared with the spot inspections. The results shown that the two-dimensional finite element method was suitable for the strip subway excavation and could provide some references to the future deep excavation design.

Abstract:As an important part of urban rail transit, subway tunnels play an important role in alleviating traffic pressure in mega-cities. Identifying and locating damage to the tunnel structure as early as possible has important practical significance for maintaining the long-term safe operation of subway tunnels. Summarizing the current status and shortcomings of the structural health monitoring of subway tunnels, a very economical and effective monitoring program is proposed, which is to use the train vibration response to identify and locate the damage of the tunnel structure. Firstly, the control equation of vehicle–tunnel coupling vibration is established and its analytical solution is given as the theoretical basis of this paper. Then, a damage index based on the cumulative sum of wavelet packet energy change rate (TDISC) is proposed, and its process algorithm is given. Through the joint simulation of VI-Rail and ANSYS, a refined 3D train-tunnel coupled vibration model is established. In this model, different combined conditions of single damage and double damage verify the validity of the damage index. The effectiveness of this damage index was further verified through model tests, and the influence of vehicle speed and load on the algorithm was discussed. Numerical simulation and experimental results show that the TDISC can effectively locate the damage of the tunnel structure and has good robustness.

Abstract:Structural and deformation feature of metro tunnel is discussed in this paper. Then long distance fiber sensing technique, based on BOTDR, is proposed to metro tunnel health monitoring. Flexural deformation of steel pipe with concrete cover is used to model metro tunnel deformation to test the ability of strain detection. As a result, the long distance fiber sensing technique shows many advantages, such as full range, in time, interference-free, duration.

Abstract:Purpose The microseismic monitoring technique has great advantages on identifying the location, extent and the mechanism of damage process occurring in rock mass. This study aims to analyze distribution characteristics and the evolution law of excavation damage zone of surrounding rock based on microseismic monitoring data. Design/methodology/approach In situ test using microseismic monitoring technique is carried out in the large-span transition tunnel of Badaling Great Wall Station of Beijing-Zhangjiakou high-speed railway. An intelligent microseismic monitoring system is built with symmetry monitoring point layout both on the mountain surface and inside the tunnel to achieve three-dimensional and all-round monitoring results. Findings Microseismic events can be divided into high density area, medium density area and low density area according to the density distribution of microseismic events. The positions where the cumulative distribution frequencies of microseismic events are 60 and 80% are identified as the boundaries between high and medium density areas and between medium and low density areas, respectively. The high density area of microseismic events is regarded as the high excavation damage zone of surrounding rock, which is affected by the grade of surrounding rock and the span of tunnel. The prediction formulas for the depth of high excavation damage zone of surrounding rock at different tunnel positions are given considering these two parameters. The scale of the average moment magnitude parameters of microseismic events is adopted to describe the damage degree of surrounding rock. The strong positive correlation and multistage characteristics between the depth of excavation damage zone and deformation of surrounding rock are revealed. Based on the depth of high excavation damage zone of surrounding rock, the prestressed anchor cable (rod) is designed, and the safety of anchor cable (rod) design parameters is verified by the deformation results of surrounding rock. Originality/value The research provides a new method to predict the surrounding rock damage zone of large-span tunnel and also provides a reference basis for design parameters of prestressed anchor cable (rod).
