Abstract:In the present paper the stability of permanent rotation of a symmetric top rotating on a slightly rough horizontal plane about the erect polar or transverse axis is discussed via the perturbation method. As a perturbation factor, the frictional force is an arbitrary nonlinear function of the sliding velocity. The same stability criterion as that in the Contensou-Magnus linear theory is obtained, but the hypothesis of the linearity for friction can be omitted. It shows that the direction of the sliding velocity at the contact point is an important factor, which influences the stability of the top. And then an explicit physical explanation is given.

Abstract:The rotation of anisotropic particles in fluid flow is essential for particle transport and collisions of nearby particles. The earlier studies indicate that both axis-symmetric spheroids and tri-axial ellipsoids in a simple shear flow tend to rotate about their shortest axes in the absence of fluid inertia. However, tri-axial ellipsoids display more complicated behavior with variations of the Stokes number and aspect ratio. In this paper, we theoretically studied the rotation stability of both axis-symmetric spheroids and tri-axial ellipsoids in a simple shear flow with negligible fluid inertia by the Floquet analysis. In the case of axis-symmetric spheroids, we find that tumbling motion of a prolate spheroid is neutrally stable, but logrolling motion is unstable, while logrolling of an oblate spheroid is stable, but tumbling is unstable. A tri-axial ellipsoid rotating about the shortest axis is found to be stable at large Stokes numbers (St > St0.5, where St0.5 is denoted as a critical Stokes number) but becoming unstable with small particle inertia (St < St0.5) for a tri-axial elongated particle. Moreover, stable intermediate-axial rotation is observed for the ellipsoids with small inertia. Meanwhile, small shape variations of slightly tri-axial ellipsoids could result in different stability states. The slightly tri-axial elongated ellipsoids easily reach a chaotic rotation state, while the rotation of slightly tri-axial flat ellipsoids is relatively more stable.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the problem of an ellipsoid of revolution rolling on a horizontal plane under the assumption that there is no slipping at the point of contact and no spinning about the vertical. A reduction of the equations of motion to a fixed level set of first integrals is performed. Permanent rotations corresponding to the rolling of an ellipsoid in a circle or in a straight line are found. A linear stability analysis of permanent rotations is carried out. A complete classification of possible trajectories of the reduced system is performed using a bifurcation analysis. A classification of the trajectories of the center of mass of the ellipsoid depending on parameter values and initial conditions is performed.

Abstract:The present work considers the optimal stabilization problem in rotational motion of a rigid body around its center of gravity. The case of the Euler rotational motion of a rigid body around a fixed point is considered. The optimal stabilization problem of the considered motion is assumed and solved. Input controls are introduced in the direction of the generalized coordinates, full controllability of linear approximation of the system is checked. Besides the optimal stabilization problem of the system on classical sense is solved, optimal Lyapunov function, optimal controls and value of functional are obtained.
Stability of Permanent Rotations and Long-Time Behavior of Inertial Motions of a Rigid Body with an Interior Liquid-Filled Cavity

Abstract:A rigid body, with an interior cavity entirely filled with a Navier-Stokes liquid, moves in absence of external torques relative to the center of mass of the coupled system body-liquid (inertial motions). The only steady-state motions allowed are then those where the system, as a whole rigid body, rotates uniformly around one of the central axes of inertia (permanent rotations). Objective of this article is two-fold. On the one hand, we provide sufficient conditions for the asymptotic, exponential stability of permanent rotations, as well as for their instability. On the other hand, we study the asymptotic behavior of the generic motion in the class of weak solutions and show that there exists a time $t_0$ after that all such solutions must decay exponentially fast to a permanent rotation. This result provides a {\em full} and rigorous explanation of Zhukovsky's conjecture, and explains, likewise, other interesting phenomena that are observed in both lab and numerical experiments.

Abstract:This paper presents the stability of resonant rotation of a symmetric gyrostat under third- and fourth-order resonances, whose center of mass moves in an elliptic orbit in a central Newtonian gravitational field. The resonant rotation is a special planar periodic motion of the gyrostat about its center of mass, i. e., the body performs one rotation in absolute space during two orbital revolutions of its center of mass. The equations of motion of the gyrostat are derived as a periodic Hamiltonian system with three degrees of freedom and a constructive algorithm based on a symplectic map is used to calculate the coefficients of the normalized Hamiltonian. By analyzing the Floquet multipliers of the linearized equations of perturbed motion, the unstable region of the resonant rotation and the region of stability in the first-order approximation are determined in the dimensionless parameter plane. In addition, the third- and fourth-order resonances are obtained in the linear stability region and further nonlinear stability analysis is performed in the third- and fourth-order resonant cases.

Abstract:An analysis is presented for the stability of a viscous liquid film flowing down an inclined plane with respect to three-dimensional disturbances under the action of gravity and surface tension. Using momentum-integral method, the nonlinear free surface evolution equation is derived by introducing the self-similar semiparabolic velocity profiles along the flow ( x - and y -axis) directions. A normal mode technique and the method of multiple scales are used to obtain the theoretical (linear and nonlinear stability) results of this flow problem, which conceive the physical parameters: Reynolds number Re , Weber number We , angle of inclination of the plane θ and the angle of propagation of the interfacial disturbances φ . The temporal growth rate ωi+ and second Landau constant J2 , based on which various (explosive, supercritical, unconditional, subcritical) stability zones of this flow problem are categorized, contain the shape factors B and β owing to the non-zero steady basic flow along the y -axis direction. A novel result which emerges from the linear stability analysis is that for any given value of Re , We and θ , any stability that arises in two-dimensional disturbances ( φ = 0 ) must also be present in three-dimensional disturbances. For φ = 0, there exists a second explosive unstable zone (instead of unconditional stable zone) after a certain value of Re (or θ ) due to the involvement of B and β in the expression of J2 . This explosive unstable zone vanishes after a certain value of φ depending upon the values of Re , We and θ , which confirms the stabilizing influence of φ on the thin film flow dynamics irrespective of the values of Re , We and θ .

Abstract:In classical mechanics, the 'geometry of motion' refers to a development to visualize the motion of freely spinning bodies. In this paper, such an approach of studying the rotational motion of axisymmetric variable mass systems is developed. An analytic solution to the second Euler angle characterising nutation naturally falls out of this method, without explicitly solving the nonlinear differential equations of motion. This is used to examine the coning motion of a free axisymmetric cylinder subject to three idealized models of mass loss and new insight into their rotational stability is presented. It is seen that the angular speeds for some configurations of these cylinders grow without bounds. In spite of this phenomenon, all configurations explored here are seen to exhibit nutational stability, a desirable property in solid rocket motors.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to investigate the stability of a stationary solution of free boundary problems of the incompressible Navier–Stokes equations in a three-dimensional bounded domain with surface tension. More precisely, this article proves that if the initial angular momentum is sufficiently small and if the initial configuration is sufficiently close to equilibrium, then there exists a global classical solution that converges exponentially fast to a uniform rigid rotation of the liquid as with respect to a certain axis. The proof of the unique existence of a stationary solution is also given.

Inviscid instabilities in rotating ellipsoids on eccentric Kepler orbits

Abstract:We consider the hydrodynamic stability of homogeneous, incompressible and rotating ellipsoidal fluid masses. The latter are the simplest models of fluid celestial bodies with internal rotation and subjected to tidal forces. The classical problem is the stability of Roche--Riemann ellipsoids moving on circular Kepler orbits. However, previous stability studies have to be reassessed. Indeed, they only consider global perturbations of large wavelength or local perturbations of short wavelength. Moreover many planets and stars undergo orbital motions on eccentric Kepler orbits, implying time-dependent ellipsoidal semi-axes. This time dependence has never been taken into account in hydrodynamic stability studies. In this work we overcome these stringent assumptions. We extend the hydrodynamic stability analysis of rotating ellipsoids to the case of eccentric orbits. We have developed two open-source and versatile numerical codes to perform global and local inviscid stability analyses. They give sufficient conditions for instability. The global method, based on an exact and closed Galerkin basis, handles rigorously global ellipsoidal perturbations of unprecedented complexity. Tidally driven and libration-driven elliptical instabilities are first recovered and unified within a single framework. Then we show that new global fluid instabilities can be triggered in ellipsoids by tidal effects due to eccentric Kepler orbits. Their existence is confirmed by a local analysis and direct numerical simulations of the fully nonlinear and viscous problem. Thus a non-zero orbital eccentricity may have a strong destabilising effect in celestial fluid bodies, which may lead to space-filling turbulence in most of the parameters range.

Abstract:It is well known that the equations governing the motion of a freely-rotating rigid body possess an exact analytical solution, involving Jacobi's elliptic functions. Andoyer (1923) and Deprit (1967) have shown that the problem may be very usefully reduced to a one-degree-of-freedom Hamiltonian system. When two of the body's principal moments of inertia are very nearly equal, the Hamiltonian system has the same form as the Ideal Resonance Problem. In earlier publications (Jupp, 1969, 1972, 1973), the author has constructed formal power-series solutions of the latter problem.In this article, the general solution of the Ideal Resonance Problem is employed to formulate a second-order formal series solution of the problem of a freely-rotating rigid body which has two of its principal moments of inertia differing by a small quantity. This solution is firstly expressed in terms of the mean elements, and then in terms of the initial conditions. The latter solution is global in nature being applicable over the whole phase plane. It is demonstrated that the exact solution and the second-order formal series solution, written in terms of the initial conditions, differ by terms of at most third order in the small parameter, over the whole domain of possible motions. This serves as an important check on the general results published in the earlier articles.
Stability of hypersurfaces with constant mean curvature trapped between two parallel hyperplanes

Abstract:Static equilibrium configurations of continua supported by surface tension are given by constant mean curvature (CMC) surfaces which are critical points of a variational problem to extremize the area while keeping the volume fixed. CMC surfaces are used as mathematical models of a variety of continua, such as tiny liquid drops, stars, and nuclei, to play important roles in both mathematics and physics. Therefore, the geometry of CMC surfaces and their properties such as stability are of special importance in differential geometry and in a variety of physical sciences. In this paper we examine the stability of CMC hypersurfaces in arbitrary dimensions, possibly having boundaries on two parallel hyperplanes, by investigating the second variation of the area. We determine the stability of non-uniform liquid bridges or unduloids for the first time in all dimensions and all parameter (the ratio of the neck radius to bulge radius) regimes. The analysis is assisted by numerical computations.

Vertical stability of circular orbits in relativistic razor-thin disks

Abstract:During the last few decades, there has been a growing interest in exact solutions of Einstein equations describing razor-thin disks. Despite the progress in the area, the analytical study of geodesic motion crossing the disk plane in these systems is not yet so developed. In the present work, we propose a definite vertical stability criterion for circular equatorial timelike geodesics in static, axially symmetric thin disks, possibly surrounded by other structures preserving axial symmetry. It turns out that the strong energy condition for the disk stress-energy content is sufficient for vertical stability of these orbits. Moreover, adiabatic invariance of the vertical action variable gives us an approximate third integral of motion for oblique orbits which deviate slightly from the equatorial plane. Such new approximate third integral certainly points to a better understanding of the analytical properties of these orbits. The results presented here, derived for static spacetimes, may be a starting point to study the motion around rotating, stationary razor-thin disks. Our results also allow us to conjecture that the strong energy condition should be sufficient to assure transversal stability of periodic orbits for any singular timelike hypersurface, provided it is invariant under the geodesic flow.

Stability of rotating equilibrium states of fluid deformable surfaces

Abstract:We consider rotating equilibrium states of fluid deformable surfaces. These states are characterized by a force balance between centrifugal and bending forces, involve surface Killing vector fields and are independent on the surface viscosity. Considering a continuum description based on the incompressible surface Navier Stokes equations with bending forces and conserved enclosed volume we numerically demonstrate that these rotating equilibrium states can be reached, but also that these states are not stable. Any perturbation in shape or rotating flow field leads to dissipation and destroys the rotating equilibrium states. After breaking symmetry the evolution reaches other rotating states with a lower energy for which the symmetry axis and the rotation axis are not aligned. Such flow fields could be characterized by three-dimensional Killing vector fields. However, also these states are not stable. Based on these numerical results we postulate a cascading mechanism of disturbance - force balance reconfiguration - dissipation that contains various rotating equilibrium states as transient configurations but eventually leads to the classical equilibrium shapes of the Helfrich energy.

On Arnold-type stability theorems for the Euler equation on a sphere

Abstract:In this paper, we establish three Arnold-type stability theorems for steady or rotating solutions of the incompressible Euler equation on a sphere. Specifically, we prove that if the stream function of a flow solves a semilinear elliptic equation with a monotone nonlinearity, then, under appropriate conditions, the flow is stable or orbitally stable in the Lyapunov sense. In particular, our theorems apply to degree-2 Rossby-Haurwitz waves. These results are achieved via a variational approach, with the key ingredient being to show that the flows under consideration satisfy the conditions of two Burton-type stability criteria which are established in this paper. As byproducts, we obtain some sharp rigidity results for solutions of semilinear elliptic equations on a sphere.

Abstract:The motion of a point mass in the J2 problem is generalized to that of a rigid body in a J2 gravity field. Different with the original J2 problem, the gravitational orbit-rotation coupling of the rigid body is considered in this generalized problem. The linear stability of the classical type of relative equilibria of the rigid body, which have been obtained in our previous paper, is studied in the framework of geometric mechanics with the second-order gravitational potential. Non-canonical Hamiltonian structure of the problem, i.e., Poisson tensor, Casimir functions and equations of motion, are obtained through a Poisson reduction process by means of the symmetry of the problem. The linear system matrix at the relative equilibria is given through the multiplication of the Poisson tensor and Hessian matrix of the variational Lagrangian. Based on the characteristic equation of the linear system matrix, the conditions of linear stability of the relative equilibria are obtained. With the stability conditions obtained, the linear stability of the relative equilibria is investigated in details in a wide range of the parameters of the gravity field and the rigid body. We find that both the zonal harmonic J2 and the characteristic dimension of the rigid body have significant effects on the linear stability. Similar to the attitude stability in a central gravity field, the linear stability region is also consisted of two regions that are analogues of the Lagrange region and the DeBra-Delp region. Our results are very useful for the studies on the motion of natural satellites in our solar system.

Abstract:In this article we prove a linear inviscid damping result with optimal decay rates of the 2D irrotational circulation flow around an elliptical cylinder. In our result, all components of the asymptotic velocity field do not vanish and the asymptotic flow lines are not ellipse any more.

Abstract:The linear stability of a fluid confined between two coaxial cylinders rotating independently with axial buoyancy induced flow is examined. Buoyancy is included through the Boussinesq approximation. The numerical investigation is restricted to radius ratio 0.5 at Prandtl number 0.709 with co-rotation situation. The outer rotating cylinder's Couette flow Reynolds number is restricted to 200. Zeroth-order discontinuities are found in the critical surface, which are explained as the result of the competition between the centrifugal and axial buoyancy induced shear instability mechanisms. Due to the competition, the neutral stability curves develop islands of instability, which considerably lower the instability threshold. Specific and robust numerical methods to handle these geometrical complexities are developed.

Abstract:Abstract The classical Kapitsa problem of the inverted flexible pendulum is generalized. We consider a thin homogeneous vertical rod with a free top end and pivoted or rigid attached lower end under the weight of the pendulum’s action and vertical harmonic vibrations of the support. In both cases of attachment, we have stability conditions for the vertical rod position. We take the influence of axial and bending rod vibrations and describe the bending vibrations using the Bernoulli–Euler beam model. The solution is built as a Fourier expansion by eigenfunctions of auxiliary boundary-value problems. As a result, the problem is reduced to the set of ordinary differential equations with periodic coefficients and a small parameter. The asymptotic method of two-scale expansions is used for its solution and to determine the critical level of vibration. The influence of longitudinal waves in the rod essentially decreases the critical load. The single-mode approximation has an acceptable accuracy. With pivoting support at the lower end of the rod, we find the explicit approximate solution. For the rigid attachment, we conduct numerical analysis of the critical level of vibrations depending on the problem parameters.

The nonlinear stability region is the subset of the linear stability region in the first quadrant that is the analogue of the Lagrange region. Our results are very useful for the studies on the motion of natural satellites in our solar system.
